Lernziele/Learning outcome:
Students will get a deeper insight into modern signal processing problems. The course is
future-oriented, as few of the presented ideas are applied in power system nowadays.
Inhalt/Contents:
The course introduces bases of advanced signal processing methods in electrical power
engineering. Introducing lectures provide ideas of discrete representations of continuous
signal with basic functions and signal orthogonal projection. Next stage of the course
concerns continuous representations of deterministic signals. Introduced definitions allow
passing into nonparametric time-frequency representations. Then, follow the time-scale
representations with wavelets. Backgrounds of statistical signal processing are introduced
with outlined parameter estimation, optimal filtering, linear modeling and estimation. Finally,
various methods of parametric spectrum estimation are outlined. Examples of application in
electrical engineering are presented throughout the course.
Main chapters: 1) The backgrounds of deterministic signal representations, 2) Basic functions
and signals orthogonal projections, 3) Continuous representations of deterministic signals, 4)
Nonparametric time-frequency representations, 5) Generalized equation of nonparametric
time-frequency representations, 6) Time-scale signal representations, 7) Backgrounds of
Statistical Signal Processing 8) Linear modeling and estimation of model parameters from
data 9) Parametric spectrum estimation, 10) Applications in power systems.

Lecture of Regenerative Energies:
- providing an overview on the most important regenerative energy sources (wind, solar,
hydro and biomass), their current and forthcoming applications and their integration into
existing energy systems. Apart from technological aspects, economical as well as
environmental aspects will be discussed. Based upon an integrated assessment, advantages

- As bioenergy is regarded as one of the most promising options of regenerative energies, the
course introduces to sustainable forestry and agriculture as sources for bioenergy carriers.
The most promising ways of cultivating, harvesting and processing energy crops ( like short
rotation forestry, new plant species as miscanthus but as well “traditional crops” like grain
and corn) will be presented. Conversion technologies for converting these crops into solid,
liquid an gaseous biofuels will be discussed.
At the end of this course students will be prepared to discuss the future contribution of

concerning to land use systems and urban settlements.
-The student understands relevant functions of soils in ecosystems.
-The student is able to integrate the existing knowledge to assess problems with regard to
fertilizations practices in different agriculture systems based on plant nutrition aspects.
Part Tropical soils management
Based on the knowledge of the main properties of soils of the sub-/ tropical climate the
impact of landuse on soil processes will be discussed.
- The student is familiar with interactions between climate, vegetation and soil formation.
- The student understands the principles of different national and international soil
classification systems.
- The student gets an understanding of the soil degradation processes in arid und humid
tropical areas.

Part Ecotoxicolgy/ Hazardous Wastes
Important terms are defined and important natural, synthetic and industrial chemicals are
presented. It is explained how an exposition to these chemicals is possible, what paths of
uptake and distribution there are in human, animal and plant organisms and how the
substances are metabolised. The importance of dose and concentration are shown using dose-
effect relations. It will be talked about toxicity, toxic risks, acute toxicity processes and
chronic toxicity processes like carcinogenity and mutagenity. Finally, risk assessment and
risk management concerning environmental chemicals are treated.
