The Golden Age of LiberalismThe Life of Romeo LeBlanc

Naomi Griffiths With a foreword by the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien

The Pearson-Trudeau era, through the eyes of a key Liberal insider

This book explores the life and times of Romeo LeBlanc, one of Canada’s most popular and successful politicians and statesmen. Probably best known as the long-standing fisheries minister in Pierre Trudeau’s cabinet from 1974 to 1982, LeBlanc’s career spanned the golden era of Liberalism in Canada. He capped his career during the nineties as the country’s twenty-fifth governor general.

Historian Naomi Griffiths spent many years reading through LeBlanc’s papers and interviewing many of his colleagues to explore the worlds he moved in — Paris in the late forties and early fifties, world capitals during his time as a journalist, and then Ottawa. As a writer with an in-depth knowledge of the Acadian communities of the Maritimes, she knows his roots very well. Her biography covers his early years in New Brunswick where he was born into rural poverty, his years as a journalist in Ottawa, his heyday as a minister in Trudeau’s cabinet, and his years at Rideau Hall. Along the way, Ms. Griffiths reveals many intriguing insights about her subject’s contemporaries, including Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, and Jean Chrétien. She also discusses the importance of LeBlanc’s Acadian heritage in animating all that he did.

This engrossing biography illuminates the life of one of Canada’s most beloved politicians and statesmen and, with it, a fascinating era in our history.

NAOMI GRIFFITHS is recognized for her pioneering work in the fields of Acadian and women’s history. She was a professor in the department of history at Carleton for many years, and she is the author or co-author of nine books, including The Context of Acadian History.

FearmongerStephen Harper’s Tough on Crime Agenda

Paula Mallea

An expert dissects the costs of the Tories’ crime-and-punishment policies and programs

According to Statistics Canada, all crime rates — including violent crime — have been trending downward over the last twenty years. Yet the Harper government insists that Canadians are in the midst of a crime epidemic. In response, the Tories have introduced “tough-on-crime” legislation that they say will make our streets safer. Billions will be spent putting tens of thousands more in prison.

Expert Paula Mallea examines the evidence concerning the impact and effects of the government’s strategy. She finds that harsher prisons and mandatory minimum sentences will not have the effect the Tories are hoping for. Instead, the result will be skyrocketing costs and the incarceration of ever-greater numbers of people. These new offenders will not be major crime figures, according to Mallea, but small players whose arrests will paradoxically help clear the way for organized crime. “Tough on Crime is actually Lazy on Crime,” says Mallea. “It is certainly Tough on Taxpayers. A better approach is to be Thoughtful on Crime or Smart on Crime.”

Fearmonger is a compelling critique of the financial as well as the human costs of the Harper tough-on-crime agenda.

PAULA MALLEA practised criminal law for fifteen years in Toronto, Kingston, and Manitoba, mainly as defence counsel. She is a research associate with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. She is also the author of Aboriginal Law: Apartheid in Canada.

Family ViolenceA Canadian IntroductionSecond edition

Julianne Momirov and Ann Duffy

The definitive book on a growing social problem

Family violence is hard for most people to understand. The fact that we are more likely to be killed or assaulted by family members than anyone else seems incredible. Yet for many Canadians the family is a dangerous place, far from the haven of love and security that we would like to believe.

In this book, sociologists Julianne Momirov and Ann Duffy explore the many forms that violence can take, from physical abuse to emotional deprivation. The victims, the theories, and the factors increasing risk are all clearly presented. Policies and programs which would address this issue — from personal intervention to institutional reforms — are also outlined.

This new edition incorporates up-to-date statistical information on the prevalence of family violence. It reports on recent initiatives to find more successful ways to respond to the needs of victims and to rehabilitate the perpetrators.

This is the definitive Canadian book for anyone wanting to learn more about this disturbing phenomenon.

JULIANNE MOMIROV has taught courses in sociology at Brock University and at University College of the Cariboo. She currently works in the legal field, where she helps people navigate the issues that arise during the breakdown of family relationships.

ANN DUFFY teaches in the Department of Sociology at Brock University. She is the author of many other books and essays.

From Bombs to BooksThe remarkable stories of refugee children and their families at an exceptional Canadian school

David Starr

Real-life stories of students, parents, and staff at an inner-city school

David Starr is the principal of one of the most diverse elementary schools in Canada. The students at Edmonds Community School in Burnaby, BC come from all over the world — Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, El Salvador, and many other places. Their parents are often refugees who have overcome harrowing events and circumstances in order to find safety in Canada. And like them, their children have often escaped war zones and witnessed horrific events before finally landing at the school.

In From Bombs to Books, David Starr shares the deeply moving stories of his students, their parents, and the staff at Edmonds who support them. He describes the upheavals many of these families have undergone and how they managed to flee some of the most dangerous lands and people on earth. He paints portraits of students who are often troubled by what they have experienced, but just as often they are of surprisingly happy and normal children who have put their families’ grief and trauma behind them. He also describes teachers and social workers who have embraced these families and dedicated themselves to making a difference in their lives.

Sometimes funny, sometimes touching and inspirational, From Bombs to Books shares the remarkable stories of the children, the families, and the staff at an exceptional Canadian school.

DAVID STARR has been the principal at Edmonds Community School, a kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Burnaby, BC, for three years. He is also a writer who won the 2008 Vancouver Province’s “Serial Thriller” competition. David Starr, his students, and his staff at Edmonds have been featured in Now News, The Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, The Globe and Mail, and on CBC Radio and Global News.

The Canadian FuhrerThe Life of Adrien Arcand

Jean-François NadeauTranslated by Robert Chodos

The story of a prominent Canadian fascist leader and his surprising role in national politics leading up to the Second World War

During the thirties, when hunger, misery, unemployment, and the threat of war erased ordinary life for many people, Adrien Arcand led rallies of ultra right-wing supporters under the sign of the swastika. His objective: to use the misery of the times to win political power for a fascist party.

Arcand’s career began as a journalist at La Presse. During the thirties, when he became a high-profile public figure in Canada, he and his fascist party organized large public rallies with a strong anti-Semitic theme in Montreal.

Arcand was imprisoned for his political views during the Second World War. After the war, he resumed his activities as leader of the right-wing National Unity Party and forged strong ties to the provincial government of Maurice Duplessis during the fifties and sixties.

Although Canadian historians often ignore Arcand, he had more influence — and a greater chance of success — than many now care to admit.

This fascinating biography sheds light on a man and a political movement that have long been hidden in the shadows.

JEAN-FRANÇOIS NADEAU taught history at Laurentian University before becoming the arts editor of Le Devoir. He is the author of five books.

No DebateThe Israel lobby and free speech at Canadian universities

Jon Thompson

How Pro-Israel lobby groups tried to curb free speech at York University

Previously announced for Spring 2011 publication.

During 2008–2009, Israel lobby organizations made concerted efforts to block a planned conference on statehood for Israel and Palestine at Toronto’s York University. This book is a report of an independent investigation by author Jon Thompson for the Canadian Association of University Teachers, an organization which has been on the forefront of many issues where free speech and academic freedoms have been challenged on Canadian campuses.

Controversy began at York soon after the Israel-Palestine conference was advertised and intensified over the following months. The event was repeatedly denounced, and university administrators were deluged by irate e-mails and phone calls. York, as the host university, was warned of boycotts and the cessation of donations and was denounced in full-page newspaper ads. When York and its co-sponsors stood their ground, the Israel lobby persuaded the Harper government to contact SSHRC, an academic funding agency also involved with the event. In response, SSHRC made an unprecedented intervention. The Canadian Association of University Teachers then made a public issue of the government’s interference and, in the end, the conference was held as planned.

This book establishes the facts of the case, provides a context for understanding it, and explores the meaning of academic freedom in Canada. Author Jon Thompson proposes measures which universities and university faculty members can take to better safeguard their ability to discuss and debate ideas which some may wish to silence.

JON THOMPSON is a professor emeritus in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of New Brunswick. He is a former chair of the department and a former president of the faculty union at UNB. He chaired the Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee of the Canadian Association of University Teachers during 1985-1988 and received the James B. Milner Award for contributions to academic freedom in 1993. He chaired the independent committee of inquiry commissioned by CAUT into the dispute involving Dr. Nancy Olivieri, the University of Toronto, the Hospital for Sick Children and Apotex Inc. (1999–2001). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Harry Crowe Foundation.

Heroes of the Acadian ResistanceThe Story of Joseph (Beausoleil) Broussard and Pierre Surette 1715-1755

Dianne Marshall

The little-known story of the Acadian resistance leaders who fought the British occupation and tried to stop deportation of the Acadian population

While most Canadians know about the tragic expulsion of the Acadians from their ancestral lands 250 years ago, the story that is usually told is incomplete. From the outset, two men openly challenged the British government’s assumption that farmers and fisherman who had made the province home for more than five generations had suddenly become a threat to its peace and security. Joseph (Beausoleil) Broussard and Pierre Surette, though unknown to one another at the start, were of the same mind. They refused to stand by while such an outrageous assault was perpetrated on Acadian people. Their anger galvanized a resistance movement that was soon fighting back in ways that Governor Charles Lawrence, in laying out his deportation plan, had never even imagined.

This book describes their early life and their role in harassing British troops who were the occupying force in Acadia during the years leading to the deportation. Once the British implemented their ethnic cleansing of Nova Scotia in 1755, Broussard and Surette led an armed force of Acadian resistance fighters who tried unsuccessfully to defeat the British through guerilla action. While Broussard and Surette ultimately failed to prevent the British from implementing their scorched-earth expulsion policy, their stories show that the Acadian community was not passive in the face of British military action.

DIANNE MARSHALL, a native of Halifax, is a frequent contributor on local history and folklore to Halifax’s Sunday Chronicle Herald newspaper. Listeners to CBC’s Information Morning will know her as the “history buff”. She is also the author of Georges Island: The Keep of Halifax Harbour.

Ellie Topp and Marilyn Booth

Delicious, quick to prepare dishes for small households

Fresh, healthy, tasty meals that can be prepared quickly and easily — that’s what more and more Canadians are looking for.

Their recipes are all meals for two. They follow Canada’s Food Guide, and guidelines for low-salt dining that help prevent hypertension and heart disease. There are lots of great ideas for side dishes — veggies, salads, and appetizers.

Their book is a great alternative to prepared dishes where — even when they taste good — you’re liable to be eating way more fat, salt, sugar, and other unhealthy ingredients than you want.

ELLIE TOPP is the author of many cookbooks including the bestselling The Complete Book of Small-Batch Preserving. She is a professional home economist and a certified culinary professional with the International Association of Culinary Professionals. She lives in Ottawa, ON.

The Avro Arrow: A Picture HistoryLawrence Miller

When the magnificent new Avro Arrow fighter jet thundered into the sky over Malton, Ontario on a cold March morning in 1958, Canada’s aviation scientists, designers, and pilots were the best in the world. Less than a year later the Arrow project was dead. What happened?

The story of the Avro Arrow, Canada’s magnificent and doomed fighter plane, has been told, retold and analyzed so often it is fading into myth. It is shocking that the best interceptor in the world in the 1950s never went into service. Five Arrows were flying and the sixth would certainly set the world speed record, yet Canadian authorities ordered every one destroyed.

This book, which tells the story using 100+ historical photos, brings the airplane and the people who made it — and killed it — back to life. Every step of the Arrow’s development was recorded in photographs. This book brings 100+ of these images together, to tell the story in picture form.

LAWRENCE MILLER put himself through McMaster University on scholarships and summer jobs as a newspaper reporter (Brantford Expositor, Toronto Star), finishing with an MA in English literature. He went on to work in the graphic arts industry. He is a Transport Canada licenced glider pilot, for several years holding (and using) a Flight Instructor Rating–Glider. This is his first book.

The Halifax Explosion: Heroes and SurvivorsJoyce Glasner

The Halifax explosion was unprecedented in its devastation with regards to casualties, force and radius of the blast, and its widespread damage to property.

On the morning of December 6, 1917, a munitions vessel loaded with explosives collided with a cargo ship in Halifax harbour triggering the worst man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima. At about 9:06 A.M., 3121 tons of steel exploded into fragments, houses collapsed, factories toppled and churches crumbled. The apocalyptic blast ravaged Halifax and Dartmouth, killing at least 1900 people and injuring thousands more. This gripping account describes the events of that fateful day in vivid detail, following the heroes and survivors of the Halifax Explosion as they struggle to cope with the devastation.

JOYCE GLASNER lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her Articles on gardening, travel, and the arts have appeared in a variety of publications. Her first book, The Halifax Explosion: Surviving the Blast that Shook a Nation was published by Altitude in 2003.

Making SelectSteven Barwin

When the pressure to win becomes too intense, a talented young hockey player ends up against the boards and looking for a way out.

Hockey is all Tyler ever wanted to do. But when he finally makes the select team, things aren’t how he imagined it. Tyler divides his time between playing for fun in house league and playing high-stakes hockey in select. But trying to succeed at both is wearing him down: the house league team accuses him of holding back, and the pressure to win during select games is immense. And the pressure isn’t just coming from the players and the coach, it’s coming from somewhere much closer to home — his hockey-loving mom. Tyler’s burnt out and feeling crushed by the stress, but how can he give up the game he loves?

In Making Select, author Steven Barwin tackles a hockey issue that has been much talked in recent years — youth hockey burnout.

STEVEN BARWIN is a middle school teacher in Vaughan, Ontario. He is the author of several Sports Stories novels including Fadeaway, Rock Dogs, SK8ER, and Icebreaker, which was chosen as a Canadian Children’s Book Centre Best Books for Kids and Teens selection.

Summit Series ’72Richard Brignall

Eight games that put Canada on top of world hockey.

It wasn’t until Canadian teams started losing in international tournaments in the mid 1950s that an epic hockey rivalry between Canada and the Soviet Union began. Canadians believed hockey was “their game.” So Canadians were in for a rude awakening when they lost Game One of the 1972 Summit Series to the Soviets. The eight-game tournament quickly became a “war on ice” fuelled by competing Cold War ideologies.

Hockey fans will enjoy reading about: small-town teams that represented Canada in international tournaments before there was a Team Canada; Father David Bauer and the first National Hockey Team; the birth of Hockey Canada; Canada and the Cold War; Canadian style of play in hockey versus the Russian style of play; and Bobby Clarke’s dirty slash on Kharlamov.

Writer and former sports reporter RICHARD BRIGNALL lives in Kenora, Ontario. He is the author of several other titles in the Recordbooks series, including Fearless, Big Train, Forever Champions, Big League Dreams, and China Clipper. His also a frequent contributor to Cottage Life and Outdoor Canada.

Righting Canada’s Wrongs: Japanese Canadian Internment in the Second World WarPamela Hickman and Masako Fukawa

During the second world war, nearly 22,000 Japanese Canadians had their civil rights, homes, possessions, and freedom taken away. This visual-packed book tells the story.

This book is an illustrated history of the wartime internment of Japanese Canadian residents of British Columbia.

At the time when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Japanese Canadians numbered well over 20,000. From the first arrivals in the late nineteenth century, they had taken up work in many parts of BC, established communities, and become part of the Canadian society even though they faced racism and prejudice in many forms.

With war came wartime hysteria. Japanese Canadian residents of BC were rounded up, their homes and property seized, and forced to move to internment camps with inadequate housing, water, and food. Men and older boys went to road camps while some families ended up on farms where they were essentially slave labour. Eventually, after years of pressure, the Canadian government admitted that the internment was wrong and apologized for it.

This book uses a wide range of historical photographs, documents, and images of museum artefacts to tell the story of the internment. The impact of these events is underscored by first-person narrative from five Japanese Canadians who were themselves youths at the time their families were forced to move to the camps.

PAMELA HICKMAN is the author of over 35 non-fiction books for children, including winners of the Green Award for Sustainable Literature, International Best Book Award, Society of School Librarians, Canadian Authors Association Lilla Stirling Memorial Award and Parent’s Choice Award. She lives in Canning, NS.

MASAKO FUKAWA lived in Steveston, BC until the forced evacuation in 1942. Masako has worked as a teacher and principal. Her recent book, Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet, won the 2010 Canada-Japan Literary Award and was runner up for the 2010 Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award and the BC Historical Federation’s 2009 Historical Writing Competition. She lives in Burnaby, BC.

Girl FightFaye Harnest

Zadie tries to fight her way through life, only to find out that, for girls like her, life often fights back.

Zadie thinks she’s tough and indestructible, like the superheroes she draws in her graphic novels. She’ll fight any girl who dares to take her on, and she always wins — until, one day, she loses. Beat up and riled up, she quickly gets her revenge and hospitalizes the next girl she challenges. Scared that this time she may have gone too far, Zadie tries to keep out of trouble. But when some girls launch a cyberbullying campaign against her meant to spur her into violence, Zadie decides that enough is enough, and the lines between superhero and supervillain become blurred.

A story written by a fresh young voice about violent teen girls and society’s general ineptitude in understanding and helping them.

Calgary native FAYE HARNEST writes and edits books, plays, and films. She has edited a book for youth on cyberbullying and worked on the Canadian Women’s Studies Journal. Faye holds university degrees in psychology and creative writing and is currently completing a MA in Creative Writing at Concordia University. This is her first novel.

Schizo Kim Firmston

A teenage boy struggles to keep his family together, while his mother’s schizophrenia tears them apart.

Dan is a fairly normal fifteen-year-old — he likes girls (obviously), hates school (ditto), and he lives to play bass guitar. But at home, things aren’t normal at all. His mother is schizophrenic, and uses a system of numbers she’s developed to determine if something is good or evil. She plasters the walls with pages of obscure calculations and lists of digits, and obsesses over them long into the night — and her behaviour is only getting more and more erratic. One day, Dan’s numbers turn bad, and she begins to threaten him physically. Dan could just run away, but he’s worried about what would happen to the nine-year-old brother he’s fought so hard to protect. All Dan wants is a normal life, but how can he keep his family together and keep them safe at the same time?

KIM FIRMSTON is a writer and creative writing instructor in Calgary, AB. Her short story “Life Before War” was shortlisted for the 2008 CBC Literary Awards.

Pretty BonesAya Tsintziras

There are no easy answers for girls growing up in a world where being pretty means being thin.

Previously announced for Spring 2011 publication.

Raine has a family, good grades, best friends, and a boyfriend who loves her. But then anorexia takes over, and her life spirals out of control. Her efforts to hide her condition are finished when she collapses at a school dance. Although she’s whisked away to treatment, Raine isn’t ready to accept who she really is and get the help she desperately needs. For Raine, coming-of-age means coming closer to death.

At fifteen, AYA TSINTZIRAS’ play, Rainfall, won an Honourable Mention in the Tarragon Theatre’s Under 20 Playwright Competition. Now completing her degree in Political Science and Media Studies at the University of Toronto, Aya has rewritten the play into this novel. Her interest in anorexia developed during her teenage years after a classmate died due to complications of this eating disorder. Deeply affected by this tragedy, Aya wants young adults to be more aware of the consequences of what she was told then was a “mysterious illness.”
