It is an honor to serve as the new Number I of Mu chapter of Kappa Alpha Order. I never thought that I would be given such an incredible opportunity, and I hope to make the best of my term here as President. I know that my officers will be an invaluable resource during my time, and I plan to rely on their skills as well as the skills of the rest of the members to improve the operations of our chapter. I have seen our house grow steadily since I ve been a member here, and I hope to continue this trend during my presidency. For the 2014 Spring semester, we will be up to 65 active members. My goal is to increase this above 70 members by the end of my presidency. This will mean acquiring a Fall pledge class of over 20 new members to replace the seniors we will have graduating. We have historically had a very high GPA among other fraternities on the row and among other KA chapters nationally. I hope to continue this tradition as well. It has become a culture here at Mu chapter to have the best grades among our peers. For the Spring 2013 semester, we had eight 4.0s and two 3.8s, but I know we can do even better. My goal is to be ranked top 3 nationwide among KA chapters. It may seem difficult, but I know that our caliber of men along with our scholarship program will help us to achieve this goal. This past summer, we had some incredible renovations which have greatly improved the look and quality of our house. This summer, however, I plan to focus on renovating the bathrooms and the showers, as per request of the members currently living in the house. I hope that this will help improve the quality of living for those in the house, as well as draw more members to want to live in the house. I would also like to begin replacing our bedroom doors and door frames so that they all match, which will also improve the aesthetic of our house. Im excited to step into this role, and I look forward to meeting all of our parents and alumni. I would like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity, and I know that this will be a great year, both academically and socially. It is a privilege and an honor for me to lead such an extraordinary group of men. Kappa Alpha gentlemen pride themselves on service in the community. This semester, KA members have donated over 647 hours of community service!

Some highlights in community service include the KA philanthropy week. During this week, the Mu chapter hosted several charitable events, including a benefit dinner and KA Karaoke. Members put in a combined total of 266 hours that week to raise $1,661 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Fourteen brothers also participated in the Tulsa Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light the Night walk to support Patrick Flam, a KA brother who is currently fighting Hodgkins Lymphoma and brother Ryan Neels who is a leukemia survivor. The members donated 21 hours and raised $120.

Brothers and Parents,

I hope this edition of the Muse finds you well and updates you on all aspects of Mu Chapter’s continuing success this Fall semester. With the Fall semester behind us and the Spring semester upon us, our house continues to strive for strong academics and brotherhood. The Mu Chapter has some high expectations this semester, including improving our academic ranking as a chapter nationally and taking the number one spot for average GPA.

From my brief time at the house thus far, I understand the importance of the support of our alumni, parents, and donor. I know I speak for the house when I say that donations of money, time, and skills are invaluable and contribute directly to the success of Mu Chapter, whether it’s the overall quality of life in the house, our continual strive for excellence in day-to-day activities, or finishing strong at the end of a semester.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Muse. If you have any questions, comments, criticisms, ideas, or shameless compliments, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Thank you for your support of Mu Chapter!

God Bless KA,

Jeremiah Benes

Mu Chapter has hosted numerous brotherhood and social events this academic year. The Fall 2013 pledge class went bowling with several of the brothers. They also hosted “The Great Fratsby” date function for all brothers and their respective dates.

Every other Sunday, the brothers enjoy gathering together to eat a home-cooked meal by Momma Sandra from Chi Omega. It’s a great way to catch up and share stories with each other!

Thanks to our friend Hoby Ferrell, over $50,000 of alumni and chapter funds were put to good use to renovate the house this summer. The main renovations were to the kitchen, which received a complete facelift with new walls, cabinets, counters, floors, and appliances. Additionally, all of the tile flooring downstairs was replaced with new tile.

The outside of the house was also completely redone. The remaining cinder blocks were covered with stone in the front of the house and stucco was added on the side and back walls of the house.

You can see additional pictures of the new renovations at the Mu chapter Facebook page.
