ARTICLES
Austin Goldstein is Ready at Anytime, Anyplace December 24th, 2020
The Austin Goldstein feature included both a great interview with the Northeastern Assistant Captain but also a piece of breaking news on his injury in the previous season. It opens with imagery that I think is integral to my style of feature writing.
Mat Barzal is Underrated: His First Season Shows Why November 28th, 2020
This was my first feature piece of the website, but one I am still proud of today. It was a deep dive into how the media and the hockey world interact with each other in both positive and negative ways.
Ex-Worcester Railers Captain Ashton Rome Feels For MA December 12th, 2020
The Ashton Rome piece was a good lesson in knowing how to follow a storyline in an interview. While I went into the interview with the hope to get his perspective on COVID as a former ECHL captain, I came out with an equal and unknown perspective that he had as an EMT/Firefighter. When a new angle arises, go for it.
After Wait, Mathew Barzal Has Re-Signed with the Islanders January 9th, 2021
This piece was my first foray into writing breaking news before it comes out. The entirety of the article (besides specifics) were written a week before Mathew Barzal had signed. This forced myself to future-proof the writing while also making the content engaging for whatever present audience received it.
PROJECTS
One of my largest projects at Drive4Five has been in the graphics department. I have developed cover images for seven of my articles, created engaging posts for the website’s social media accounts, and even developed all of the standard gameday graphics for the Drive4Five Instagram account. Included in the game day graphics are also captions and questions I have written in order to engage the following of the Drive4Five Instagram account.
Familial Connection: John Tonelli’s Son Jordan January 5th, 2021
To be honest, I went into the interview a little bit starstruck. Though, I quickly learned during the interview to keep my emotions and connections to the story aside and focus on writing the best piece possible.
NHL Shot Maps: Hockey’s Adaptation to Social Media December 19th, 2020
This piece, just like the one on Barzal’s “underrated-ness,” was a blast for me to write about as it combined my love for hockey, analytics, and media. This one though more focused on how the current media landscape is altering how hockey is discussed overall. Though the thesis sounds like it comes from a media communications essay, it still came out as an engaging piece for a general audience.
