Hello!

Hooray for Dads! Yes, there’s one day a year that we officially tell them how wonderful they are, but we do also think it all year round.

While it’s more the norm that Mums are the family maid, childminder and cook, some of us are lucky enough to have hands-on-with-the-kids, helpful-round-the-house husbands and dads, so we’re looking forward to spoiling them on 15 June.

Our kids will say that Dad is someone they go to when Mum says “no” – we say that despite the snoring, the mess, the laundry-generating and remote-hogging, we really are their number one fans.

So Happy Father’s day to all the Dads!

The Equality Act 2010 protects women from unfavourable treatment because of pregnancy, pregnancy related illness or maternity leave but, according to campaigning organisation www.maternityaction.org.uk, 60,000 women lose their jobs because of pregnancy or maternity discrimination every year.

Employers sometimes object to the number or timing of ante natal appointments but there is a right to paid leave: you should not be asked to make up the time or to rearrange appointments outside office hours.

Absence policies should not be applied to women with pregnancy related illnesses unless this is to assist her. For example, an employer might refer her to Occupational Health to consider whether any adjustments might enable her to return to work. This does not stop women being disciplined or even dismissed because they have taken time off with pregnancy related illness.

Even outright pregnancy discrimination is still common: employers’ attitudes towards women change once they announce their pregnancy, with an assumption that

Join Tommy’s and Buggyfit on Monday 16 June in Marbury Park, Northwich at 10.15am for this year’s Cheshire Baby Race! A Baby Race is a sponsored event for you to power walk with your buggy and baby, your friends and family in aid of Tommy’s.

Did you know that over two million children are taken to hospital after having an accident each year – and around half of these accidents happen in the home?

Learning life saving First Aid techniques could prove an invaluable skill for your whole family. Bumps & Bashes deliver First Aid Training to parents of babies and children and have been specialising in teaching parents since 2009.

The class lasts approximately 3 hours and aims to teach attendees the necessary knowledge and skills to act confidently in the vital moments between an accident happening and the emergency services arriving. It is taught in a relaxed way and only one class is needed.

The class covers choking, CPR and the recovery position for all the family, plus burns and scalds, poisoning, meningitis awareness and much more.

she is no longer committed to her work, won’t return after her maternity leave or will only want to work part time. Performance concerns are brought up or the role is said to be redundant.

Women also experience problems when they try to return to work after maternity leave. They find their position has been filled and their services are no longer needed. Maternity leave must not play a part in any decision that a role is redundant. Any selection process should not take account of absences for maternity, ante natal appointments or pregnancy related illness. If a woman has been replaced during maternity leave, the role is not redundant and it is unlawful to dismiss. If the role is genuinely redundant, she has priority for any suitable alternative vacancies.

I advise anyone experiencing discrimination to send an email setting out the problem so that there is written evidence of the first complaint.

Education

The Gove revolution continues…….as the Education Secretary pledges an increase to Latin and Greek in state secondary schools, as well as suggesting that all secondary schools put their 13-year-olds forward to sit the Common Entrance Exam, in a move to give schools an insight into how their pupils are doing.

‘Since the last Labour government abolished key stage three tests for 14-year-olds, we have had no rigorous externally-set and marked measures of progress for students in the first five years of secondary school,’ Michael Gove said. ‘I want state schools to try out Common Entrance exams – giving them a chance to check how well they and their pupils are performing against some of the top schools around the world.’ He also encourages schools to stay open for up to 10 hours a day, allowing time for structured homework sessions but also for after-school

sports matches, orchestra rehearsals and clubs. His plans received a mixed reception however, with Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers saying, ‘We have no problem with schools staying open for longer provided most of those additional hours are used for extracurricular activities. We need to be clear on where the money will come from to fund the extra staffing required, given that teachers are already working a 48-hour week on average under the current arrangements.’ Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, added, ‘The push for longer school days of up to 10 hours will be counterproductive for many children and young people. Primary school pupils in particular will find it very difficult to concentrate or even stay awake for such long periods.’

Imagine a ‘school’ where climbing trees, building dens and growing your own food are part of the everyday experience.

Where nature is the ‘teacher’ and children learn through development of the ‘head, heart and hands’. Where children are trusted as confident,

School in the woodscapable learners to use tools, light fires and assess risk. Where a high ratio of staff creates freedom for ‘riskful’ play and where a connection to nature weaves seamlessly throughout the daily flow of activities. Welcome to School in the Woods: Outdoor Nursery, a new Early Years provision which embodies the principles of the Scandinavian Forest School approach.

Children will spend most of their day outdoors – whatever the weather! With a capacity for just 12 children (2 – 6 years), this small, ‘family’ group will benefit from regular access to Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve and a large children’s garden area in the grounds of the beautiful 19th century Davenport Methodist Chapel.

Vernon Pupils have big fish to fry

Vernon Primary School in Poynton recently welcomed Sale Sharks Rugby Club for a 5 week course of Tag Rugby with their Year 3 pupils.

The aim of the programme was to introduce the sport to the children, with the hope that they not only enjoy the sessions, but would also consider joining a local rugby club to play regularly. From the moment the session started, the children were gripped! They learnt a range of skills, such as how to hold and travel with the ball, and found out about the different ways to score. Mrs Carvell, Head teacher said, “This 5 week programme is not only a brilliant opportunity for the children to learn about rugby, but has also provided the teachers with an exciting range of skills for future teaching”. It’s time to get walking again! This year’s Walk To School Week runs from 19 – 23 May, bringing together nearly one million schoolchildren, teachers and parents.

2014’s campaign promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with plenty of fun ideas of how to get involved. With Strider’s 5-day Walking Challenge it’s easier than ever to take part, plus you also get a chance to win an iPad mini. Walk to School Week reinforces five benefits of walking: safety, discovery, health, eco-friendly and social time, so how about setting up a Park & Stride area around your school, or holding a Walk to School event and encouraging everyone to leave their cars at home for

Walk that waya day? One of our favourite ideas is to team up with neighbouring schools and organise a walking relay between schools, with refreshment stops at each one! Or you could nominate your dream walking companion from the world of books and dress up as them on Walk to School Day. A treasure hunt is a fun way to add a bit of competition on the walk to school, too. Don’t forget, if you are celebrating Walk to School Week, they’d love to hear from you. Tweet them at @livingstreets using #walktoschool, or post on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/livingstreetsuk. Just remember to have fun!

EducationTerra Nova’s new Headmaster

Mark Mitchell, Terra Nova’s current Acting Headmaster and former Deputy Headmaster, has been appointed Headmaster to succeed Andrew Lewin who left to take a sabbatical earlier in the year.

Mark began his career as a science teacher at Ardingly College, later moving to King’s House School. He was then appointed as Head of Science at Feltonfleet School before joining Terra Nova School in 2008 as Head of Science, then Deputy Headmaster.

Chairman of Governors, Martin Hallam, commented: “The decision to appoint Mark as Headmaster was absolutely unanimous. Mark has vast experience and superb qualities that have led to us making this decision. The Governors have had the opportunity to observe Mark closely during his time as Acting Headmaster and are certain that Mark will bring to his new role all of the qualities that we sought in the Headmaster of Terra Nova School.”

Mark’s wife Elanor is a Year 3 teacher at the school, and their two children Oliver, 10, and Iris, 6 are also pupils of Terra Nova School. Elanor will be increasing her hours at the school to support Mark whilst continuing with her teaching role.

On his appointment, Mark enthused: “I am absolutely delighted and very much look forward to leading the school forwards. I will shortly be announcing many exciting developments, which will strengthen the structure and management of the school. My team and I have the focus, drive and determination to make Terra Nova School the most sought-after prep school in Cheshire.”

Parties

A birthday party is a ritual of childhood and an event that’s remembered forever. So the pressure is on – how do you ensure success and survival (both your own and your home’s)?

0 – 3: There’s just one word that matters here: simplicity. Birthday parties for tinies can be marvellous, memorable affairs, but they don’t need to be elaborate or to involve much expense or entertainment or special props. In essence, you’re catering for the grown-ups as much as for the children – because at this stage, the adults will definitely stay (and you’re more than likely to have a few grandparents in the mix as well). Concentrate on creating a fun, easy, safe space for the children – a soft play space with plenty of toys strewn around is ideal – and make sure the adults are

Fabulous parties at every ageBy Joanna Moorhead

well catered for: if they stay calm, the children will as well. If you want something with a bit of a theme, how about a teddy bears’ picnic? Make sure everyone remembers to take their favourite cuddlies home at the end though, or there will be tears at bedtime!

4 – 6: At this stage parties can be a bit more ambitious and a time when it is well worth investing in a great entertainer: they are experts, know how to crowd control while producing shrieks and honest laughs. However don’t assume that to put on a great bash you need to spend lots of money. At this age children can have loads of fun without a big outlay; later on, when they’re tweens and teens, you’ll be under pressure to shell out big-time, so don’t pre-empt that now. A party at home or in the local park can be huge

fun; traditional party games will be popular, and if you want to push the boat out a bit consider investing in a bouncy castle; or if home really isn’t a possibility, a soft play centre will be hassle-free, if more expensive. Themed parties are great for this age group, and they actually make life simpler for the party organiser: a pirate theme is always popular, or sea creatures, or pick up on your child’s favourite book or TV programme. Dressing up is a big hit for this age group too.

7 – 9: Activities work a treat at this stage, whether you’re at home or in a church hall or at a park. For a popular and low-budget option, think about a baking party at home – weigh out all the ingredients before the children arrive, get them to mix and decorate them and then pop them in the oven to bake while you play a few party games (shortbread biscuits are easy peasy; have a range of cutters for exciting shapes).

10 – 12: Older children like going out to party. To keep the costs down, encourage a smaller number of guests – think about a trip to the seaside or to an exciting adventure playground they’ve not visited before, and remember that the journey can be as much fun as the activity at the end of it. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, a trip to a climbing wall, an ice rink, a bowling rink or a go-karting centre can be wonderful fun too.

The golden rules• Never have a party that lasts more

than two hours• Party bags can be cheap as chips,

thanks to charity and pound shops – although a balloon and small token work just as well.

• Have a plan mapped out for what should happen when

Party food tips• Food doesn’t need to be

complicated• It does need to include options

– many children won’t eat ham/cheese/eggs/grapes/pizza

• Don’t overface guests with too much food

• Putting cup cakes rather than slices of cake into party bags makes life easier

For Lily’s 8th birthday she wanted something a little more grown up than the traditional party games, so this year we went for a Rhythmix Street Dance Party hosted by Little Sports Coaching.

The two girls who came along to lead the party were brilliant. To warm everyone up, they played some fab team games to get everyone working together and in the mood for letting go and having some fun. They then taught Lily and her friends a great routine to a One Direction song. The routine was built up in sections to ensure everyone in the party had got to grips with each part;

Dancing up a stormBy Jayne Keep

the girls even worked in a couple of gymnastic moves as requested by Lily. The party finale saw the kids in groups, performing on the stage (good job I selected a venue with one of those!). The food then flew off the table as everyone had worked up such an appetite so some quieter games brought the party to a close.

Lily was thrilled with the party, as was I. I would certainly use Little Sports Coaching again… hmm maybe one of their Mini Soccer parties for Logan’s next birthday.

There’s just one word I can use for Ben’s 8th birthday party and that’s WOW! We chose Vernon Park Gymnastics Club in Stockport and it was absolutely perfect. With a big friendship group, it’s still difficult to try and get him to narrow down his invitations to just a handful of children, so his dad and I agreed to a big party one last time.

£100 gives you exclusive use of the Gym for an hour, followed by half an hour in the Party area – for up to 25 children. This meant that we could not only ask all his good friends to come, but also invite some siblings along without breaking the bank completely. With a qualified gymnastics coach in attendance to keep an eye on safety and to demonstrate a few “moves” (we had the lovely Dan, who was great with the kids), pretty much all the equipment was

A great workout at the GymBy Caryl Hall

accessible. Within a few minutes, all the children (our age range was 3 – 8) were bouncing, balancing, flipping and dangling, no previous gymnastics experience required! An hour was plenty – we made sure we had lots of water on hand as it was thirsty work, and they managed to work up an impressive appetite for the food (you need to provide your own), which disappeared in no time.

Party slots are available at specific times to work around the classes at the gym – ours was at 5.15pm, which meant that we had a lot of grateful parents, as a few children fell asleep in the car, and the rest were quite happy to go to bed as soon as they got home. Apparently some even asked to go to bed – a first indeed!

A great choice of venue for us – highly recommended! 0161 406 0488 / www.vernonparkgym.com

You’ll be amazed when you see how small, sweet and friendly the little horses are at Dandy Farm, the My Little Pony Parties farm in Adlington, Cheshire.

Within minutes of arrival, the children’s confidence grows as they’re encouraged to learn about these gentle little creatures and make some treasured memories of a great birthday party.

Each Pony Party is designed around the children and their ages. First they get creative, dressing them up in bows and ribbons and painting their hooves with glitter. Then they have great fun taking the horses round the obstacle course with jumps and a weaving post. This is followed by a little walk through Dandy’s pastures and if the weather is good, they head to a small river where the horses can drink and splash around. A really great time is absolutely guaranteed!

Their toddler mornings are also really popular. These take place every other Wednesday from 10am – 12pm, and your little ones can interact with the horses – brushing them, dressing them up and making their hooves sparkle with glitter.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening inherited disease, affecting over 10,000 people in the UK. You can’t catch or develop cystic fibrosis, it’s something you’re born with and most cases in the UK are now diagnosed soon after birth. It’s caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged with mucus, making it hard to breathe and digest food.

2014 is the 50th Anniversary of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and to help raise awareness, Karina Marvin shares her story with us.

Ethan loves football. He’s midfield for Lee Rangers, and follows his dad’s team, Sheffield Wednesday. He is 7¼ and likes playing (and squabbling) with his siblings – Evie, 5 and Zac, 2 – ice cream, Star Wars and Lego. He dislikes spiders and cabbage, and he’s dubious about physiotherapy.

He’s a normal lively little boy, but also a very special one – one in 2,500. He has cystic fibrosis (CF). Since diagnosis, at two days, he has had a strict daily treatment regime, including ‘physio’. Ethan was born with a blocked

Family Unitedbowel (meconium ileus), which affects 10 – 15% of babies with CF. Needing two laparoscopies in his first week, he spent 3½ weeks in the neonatal unit.

‘’It came as a terrible shock to us’’ Karina remembers. “We had absolutely no idea that there was anything wrong. It completely rocked our world. Our first baby, and we felt so helpless. We loved him dearly and were determined to keep him well. Doctors told us that, like 2.5 million other people in the UK, we are both carriers of a faulty gene and that Ethan had inherited this gene from us both. There was a 1 in 4 chance of each and every further baby having cystic fibrosis. Thankfully Evie and Zac are free from it.

With Ethan finally home, we began his life-long treatment. Initially the physio meant clapping a wriggling baby on his back twice a day. Quite challenging! Now it involves using a PEP mask to exercise his lungs, blowing exercises, and a mucus-thinning nebulising treatment. Ethan is extremely active, swimming regularly. Exercise helps to keep his lungs clear from excessive thick, sticky mucous which could otherwise clog them. He accepts that his strict after-school treatment regime is necessary for him to stay healthy. We are very honest with him. There is never a day off, whether it’s his birthday, Christmas, or on holiday.”

Ethan must also take enzyme tablets – Creon – with every meal. Without them he couldn’t digest his food and would fail to thrive. He has to eat more (high calorie) food than other children to maintain weight. “He is the envy of his class when he pulls out his chocolate biscuit at snack time! He

attends regular specialist hospital clinics, where they monitor height, weight, lung function and diet. The care is phenomenal. We have complete faith that the team want the best for Ethan as much as we do.”

Ethan enjoys school. “The teachers are so supportive. They make sure Ethan takes his tablets and eats and drinks lots. They recently held a charity day when everyone came to school dressed in their favourite colour and Ethan talked to the children about his condition.”

Cystic fibrosis dominates and changes family life for everyone. “It’s hard to juggle the needs of three children. Although busy, we also try to raise money for charity – our way of helping Ethan and others. We are hastening the day when the condition is no longer life-limiting. We must have hope.’’

Fifty years ago, frail children invariably attended special schools. Now they look so well it’s hard to believe they have such a serious condition. But they remain very susceptible to infections. “This is my constant fear. All children get colds, but with Ethan I worry that they will go to his chest. Minor bugs can develop into serious respiratory illness, so CF children are treated rigorously with antibiotics, sometimes intravenously. They are not allowed to mix with other CF kids, in case they pass each other infections. Consequently it’s not easy to meet other CF mums.

Initially I felt very isolated. Ethan’s hospital has been great at introducing me to other families locally and through this and the local CF group I have made some great friendships. We all fight together for a better future.”

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust was founded in 1964 to research a cure, support patients and their families, and facilitate early diagnosis of the condition. The CF gene was identified in 1989 and gene therapy clinical trials are in progress. Although life expectancy has improved greatly, many precious lives are lost prematurely. Since 2007, CF testing has been included in the routine heel prick test for all new born babies. The Trust works with communities throughout the UK to help and support all those affected by the condition. A team of Public Affairs Officers works closely with cystic fibrosis patients and clinical care teams, providing support. Locally, specialist CF centres are found at • Alder Hey Children’s Hospital• Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital• Manchester Children’s Hospital • University Hospital of South ManchesterCF network clinics are found at:• Countess of Chester Hospital• Leighton Hospital• Macclesfield District General Hospital• Stepping Hill Hospital• Warrington Hospital• University Hospital of South Manchester For advice/support, ring the helpline - 0300 373 1000. Are you interested in working with children, teaching 3 – 5 year olds the benefit of good health, exercise and positive nutrition? Are you looking for flexibility in your working week, doing a job that makes you feel valued, and gives you free time to spend with the family or enjoy long weekends without feeling guilty?

Stretch-n-Grow is a pre-school exercise programme for children from the age of

18 months. The programme follows a structured format, linked to “Curriculum for Excellence” and is specifically designed with children in mind. Children not only exercise, they learn about its importance, as well as that of their bodies, muscles, hygiene and eating a healthy diet. Creating positive habits at an early age is at the heart of what Stretch-n-Grow is all about.

A quick glance through the franchise opportunities aimed at mums would have you believe we’re all entertainers who can’t get enough of making music, dancing and swimming. While we love being able to take our children to these classes, not all of us are cut out for actually running them.

Pink Spaghetti is an award-winning, desk-based (hooray!) franchise opportunity, originating in Cheshire.

Started by two mums in 2009, Pink Spaghetti offers personal assistant services to small business.

“A typical Pink Spaghetti to do list might include some internet research, making travel bookings and a spot of social media marketing,” explains co-founder Caroline Gowing.

Pink Spaghetti franchisees tend to come from a corporate background.

These days most of us know that exercise is good for us; it keeps us trim, is a good stress buster, helps stave off illness and leads to a long and healthy life. So the question is, why do more of us not do it?

The most common excuse is ‘I don’t have time’, but think how much time you spend watching television, on the phone, on the internet or reading the paper – all sedentary activities that will not lead to a healthy lifestyle!

What most people usually lack is not time but motivation, and one way of helping you get going is to find a likeminded friend – or even get the

Many have previously considered setting up their own PA companies, but didn’t want to make the leap alone.

Co-founder Vicky Matthews says: “We recognise that many women crave the freedom of self-employment, but are naturally risk averse.

“I’m not afraid to say we made mistakes when we set up our first Pink Spaghetti business in mid-Cheshire five years ago, but we learned from them. For example, we wasted a lot of money on untargeted advertising that didn’t work.

“Our wealth of experience in growing a PA company accelerates our franchisees to a fast and profitable start. Support is unlimited and includes training in pricing, marketing yourself, networking plus of course any of the important office skills you may be missing.”

Pink Spaghetti was recently named Business of the Year in the Network She Awards and is a finalist in the EWIF women in franchising awards.

Running a Pink Spaghetti franchise would suit someone with great organisational, research and customer service skills who is looking for a part time, home-working opportunity. You can find out more at www.pink-spaghetti.co.uk

whole family involved. You don’t have to join the gym to get health benefits and this is a perfect time of year for you and the family to get out into the fresh air. Any local trails are great destinations to walk, jog, run or bike ride. You can go at your own pace, spend some great time together and IT’S FREE!

Once you make a start, you might want to push yourself a little harder, so if you have the bug you could always look to a local leisure facility to see what family activities they have for you all to enjoy. What’s not to like?! A great time with the family and a step towards becoming fitter and healthier.

Over the Easter break, we took the kids to Knowsley Safari Park; it was the first time we had been but it certainly won’t be the last. I had expected that a safari park wouldn’t be able to compete with the zoo for getting up close and seeing the animals; I thought they would be far away from the roads and we would all need binoculars to see them, when in fact we got really up close.

We were parked right next to a group of sleeping lions and we had monkeys sat up on our bonnet! The kids were both amazed

Walking on the wild side at Knowsley Safari ParkBy Jayne Keep

and amused throughout the drive. There was a good variety of animals along the way – if any you wanted to get close to are a little shy on your first drive through you are welcome to drive back through again without any extra charge. And after your drive is complete, there’s still plenty to see and do. We watched the lovely and talented sea lions put on a show, viewed the birds, bats and reptiles in their relevant houses, before heading over to the funfair area for some great rides. Wristbands can be purchased for just £10 to get as many turns on the rides as you like – this is a real bargain and keeps the kids busy while the parents grab a coffee.

Knowsley Safari Park is one of the best family days out we’ve had in a long time. I recommended it to another family who went over Easter and they too were thrilled at both the entertainment and the good value. For further information visit www.knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk

Brave enough for white water canoeing through a spectacular gorge and abseiling under a plunging waterfall? If not, how about gentler pursuits such as the spectacular bay walk at Mont St Michel, bike touring through coast & countryside and sunset beach walks?

Whether you’re seeking high-adrenaline thrills or a more relaxed holiday, Family Adventure Holidays offer something for everyone from tots to teens – and their parents.

Three action-packed summer holidays

pools from 6am on the morning registration opens, just to get a workable slot. After-school activities affect the whole family and you don’t want to have to pick up from activities while your other children are desperate for their supper.

• You’ll get a class that works for your family. More than one child can mean more than one activity on the same afternoon and much as we’d like to be in two places at one time, it’s just not possible. Planning in advance means less stress and more peace of mind.

• You’ll get a class in a branch that is close to home. It’s often easier to walk than cramming everyone into the car again, let alone better for the environment

• Extra-curricular activities are not essential and too many can leave everyone exhausted and stressed, but if you do choose carefully and book in advance, a few clubs and classes can bring huge benefits to your child.

Here’s why: • You won’t get stuck with a term of classes

your child detests. Many classes offer trial sessions so if you make the most of them now you can be sure you are choosing what’s right for your child come September. Just because their best friend is doing trampolining doesn’t mean your child will love it.

• Some activities are so popular that they have long waiting lists (some over a year long!). Book early to avoid disappointment.

• You can avoid the mad panic of early September. It can be hard enough settling your child into nursery or getting them back into the routine of school, homework and getting up at the crack of dawn – the last thing you want to do is try to sort out clubs!

• You’ll get your first choice of time slot. Some classes get so booked up that if you leave it until September the only time you’ll be left with is 7pm on a Friday night – not fun! It’s not unheard of for parents to be queuing outside swimming

Book up early! Rugby or ballet, swimming or gymnastics, drama or Brownies – whatever activity your child loves, how soon should you book for the autumn term? While some of us are happy to wait until the very last minute to book our children’s classes, others prefer to book well in advance.

It’s certainly worth starting to look for classes early on – even as much as a whole term in advance.

Tennis Tykes is a tennis play and coaching programme for 2 – 4 year olds taught by qualified Tennis coach Jonny Healey.

The emphasis is on fun, using modified mini tennis equipment (small nets, sponge balls and adapted rackets). The classes develop children’s basic co-ordination, agility and balance while at the same time also promote social interaction and develop confidence, language and listening skills. Personal achievement is also rewarded and they build on skills achieved each week with stickers and charts for every child.

Classes are currently held in various parts of Cheshire such as Wilmslow, Handforth, Didsbury, Heaton Moor, Bramhall and Macclesfield.

Thinking of things to do this summer holidays? Classes will be running throughout the school holidays at Handforth Hall Tennis Club.

Why not sign up for a FREE TASTER LESSON by contacting Jonny Healey on 07760 254118 / [email protected] For further information, please also log onto www.tennistykes.co.uk.
