GIVE US AN S!GIVE US A U!GIVE US AN M!.....well you get the picture. Yes, we’re pretty excited about summer – and yet again we live in hope that this year will be the scorcher we’ve been waiting for. Certainly, at the time of writing this, it’s the hottest it’s been so far – but we’ve been stuck indoors researching Holiday Camps and Summer What’s on! That’ll teach us to leave everything to the last minute. But we’re hoping we’ll soon be able to put our prettily painted toenails on display, while we relax and sip something icy cold, complaining about the heat.Wishing you all a great, sunshiney season and safe travels wherever you go.Till September,

The new lessons are in partnership with Mystic Monkey Chinese Education who focus on teaching pupils not only the Chinese language, but also offer students an in-depth overall knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.

Over 50% of state grammar schools are planning serious changes to their admissions policies in order to attract pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the Grammar School Heads Association.

30 of the country’s 164 selective schools have already agreed the move, with another 58 planning to do so shortly, following a report from education charity the Sutton Trust which said that grammar schools were being monopolised by students from wealthier homes. Michael Wilshaw, chief schools

The relationships developed with partner schools in China will eventually lead to student and teacher exchanges, where pupils can build and strengthen their Mandarin language skills and receive first-hand experience of Chinese culture.

Simon Leyshon, Headmaster of Cransley School comments: “We are constantly looking for skills that will enhance our pupils’ prospects. In our multi-cultural society it’s important to be able to relate to other cultures and even communicate in different languages. We are very excited to be able to offer our students this opportunity and look forward to the lessons starting in September.”

inspector, said they were ‘stuffed full’ of middle class children and so failed to improve social mobility. Under these new changes many grammar schools will reserve places specifically for pupils from poorer homes who pass the 11-plus. Barry Sindall, chief executive of the GSHA, added that the new admissions rules would not mean a reduction in the number of places for children from better off homes. These changes follow on from Schools Minister David Laws revealing that the Government is involved in talks with grammar school heads to make 11-plus tests less ‘coachable’, to avoid middle class parents gaining an advantage through being able to afford private tutoring.

For Logan’s 4th birthday party I wanted an activity that would really engage him, as at ‘traditional’ parties he loses focus on the games and just runs around. I also wanted something that would feel very much like a boys party but that his sisters and other girls attending would enjoy too. I think I found the perfect thing – Kids Go Karting in Stockport.

Kids Go Karting aim their parties at ages 3 – 10 years old. The electric karts are so simple to drive – just one pedal and steer – so even the youngest children were straight in and driving around. The party guests were split into teams of four, each team having three turns on the karts and the top driver from each team getting back on again for a final race, so all the kids had plenty of driving time. When not driving there was still plenty of other stuff to do.… air hockey, a mini climbing wall, Wii games and colouring in.

After the final race, the kids sat down to a lovely spread of food supplied by Kids Go

Kart-tastic!

Karting before Logan was presented with an amazing Kart cake. With candles blown out it was then time for his lap of honour while his guests cheered him on which he loved!

To round off the party, all children were presented with a special Kids Go Karting driving licence and Logan even got a medal.

I’m thrilled with how successful the party was; all children taking part really got involved and had a brilliant time. The birthday boy was certainly made to feel very grown up and special. As a busy parent it was the perfect easy solution for me as everything was taken care of – entertainment, catering, cake, party bags… all I had to do was fill in the invitations which I printed off the website – a real hassle free option.

Summer

11Families Cheshire | www.familiescheshire.co.uk

1. Go wild swimming: swimming in a pond or lake, or in the sea, is a very different experience from an indoor pool

2. Build a den: whether you do this indoors or in the garden, or out in the woods or on the beach, you’ll have loads of fun.

3. Go fruit picking: not only will you have a good time, you’ll also be setting up your next family project - making jam!

4. Sleep under canvas: for families that haven’t camped before, even one night away, or even in the back garden, can be a huge adventure.

5. Cook on a campfire: this is a perfect add-on to your camping adventure. Get advice online about how to build your fire and what foods are best to cook on it.

Ping! Time to unplug and reconnect with your familyJoanna Moorhead has some ideas on how to do it

6. Go on a long bike ride: if you’ve all got your own bikes you probably do this all the time. If not, it can be a really fabulous and different day out to hire bikes and follow a cycle trail.

7. Play a board game: a game like Monopoly or Cluedo, which children can play from a young age or can play in teams, is a genuinely bonding experience.

8. Reorganise your family photographs: online galleries can be a great way of sharing pictures with relatives and friends – but there’s a huge amount of fun to be had from creating an old fashioned album together.

9. Borrow a dog for a weekend: if you’re not a dog-owning family, having one on loan for a few days can be a hugely rewarding experience. See www.borrowmydoggy.com

10. Climb a big hill: this can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are.

11. Go fishing: you can do this with a net in the rock pools at the beach, or in a stream or river inland.

12. Have a snail race: find some snails, and set up the course; place bets on which snail will win, and watch the action unfold.

13. Go star-gazing: do some research beforehand, and when you get a clear evening, head off in to a space where the sky is open in search of the North Pole, Saturn and the Plough.

14. Hunt for treasure or bones: beaches can be great places for this, or look online to see if there are any ‘treasure troves’ near you (eg if you’re in London, mudraking on the banks of the Thames has plenty of potential).

15. Go geocaching: ok, so this is one activity you will need your mobile phone for. But the high-tech treasure hunt is fascinating, and it pulls all members of the family in. Try it! More information at www.geocaching.com

16. Switch roles in the kitchen: if you’re usually the meal-maker, and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round.

17. Have a family talent show: this is a good one when you have another family or relatives visiting. Everyone has to do a turn; no wriggling out allowed, however shy the mums and dads are.

18. Make a family journal or scrap book: this can be a good project for a family holiday or a school holiday. Like a talent show, everyone needs to contribute something – a review of a local pub, an accounts of a day out, or a book review.

19. Fly a kite: they’re cheap and easy to buy, or you can even make your own. Read up on tips about how to fly them at www.thekitesociety.org.

20. Go birdwatching: you don’t need to know anything about birds to enjoy watching them, but if you go to a birdwatching sanctuary or wetlands centre you’ll learn loads. For more information see www.wwt.org.uk

Enter a fantastical world of legend and mythology by joining in with the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge.

Run by independent charity the Reading Agency, the scheme invites children to pop into their local library and choose six or more books to read during the holidays. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way, with a certificate at the end for every child who completes the challenge.

This year’s theme is Mythical Maze, which challenges 4–11 year-olds to discover fantastical creatures as they find their way around a labyrinth. Head to your local library during the summer holidays to enrol. It’s completely free and anybody can take part. The programme is supported by a Family Leaflet for parents, and a Facebook page with all the latest news: read more at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk and www.readingagency.org.uk.

Take the summer reading challenge

Summer is a great time to enjoy being together with your nearest and dearest. But for many families these days, even together time is dominated by mobiles phones, iPads, TV and other devices. According to a recent survey, though, even kids themselves recognise the need to unplug and welcome the chance to ‘do something different’. Here are our top 20 ideas for what that ‘something different’ might be.

We were very excited to try out the new Vtriker Elite – especially me, as I can’t quite build up the confidence to rollerblade with the kids around the neighbourhood since my first (and last) embarrassing attempt. So being fairly stable, having a bit of a lower body workout and looking like a cooler, younger version of the mum I really am was pretty appealing.

It’s far more than just another scooter – its unique design just lets you use a scissor action, pushing your feet together and apart to propel yourself forward. It has two handle powered brakes so that you can control the speed on the rear wheels, and the scissor action means there are some great moves you can try to master. It’s also got an easy to use Quick Lock system so you can fold it down for transporting and is available in four different colours - Black, Pink, Blue and Green. We gave it a whirl in the quiet close next to our house and were very impressed. Both Declan (15) and Ben (8) loved it and I had to pull rank to have a go. It’s suitable for children age 5+, and as it can hold up to 80kg of weight, I know they’re not going to outgrow it quickly. I can see we’re going to have to get a second one to avoid a family war.

We’ve got one of these fabulous new Vtriker Elite’s to give away to a lucky Families reader! Simply go to www.familiescheshire.co.uk to enter now. Entries close Thurs 31 July. Good luck! For more information go to www.vtriker.com
