Am I ‘going to church’ or am I ‘going to worship’? This question really struck me this summer. What is the difference? Going to church can benefit us, get our week started off on the right path…but is that all God intends for worship? Jesus said in John 4:23, ―Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.‖ In her book, ‗Parenting in the Pew‘, Robbie Castleman says, ―Going to worship requires a life transformation and happens out of a new heart, not an old habit.‖ Going to worship requires heart preparation. Our son Kyle was married this past weekend. Well over a year of planning and preparation went into making their wedding a joyful celebration of their love and commitment. But what a different experience it would have been if the bride and groom and their families had approached this event like most of us prepare to worship! We are the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27). Revelation 19:7 says, ―Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready.‖ Let‘s begin to make ourselves ready to worship by spending some time with Jesus, letting Him wash us with the water of His Word (Ephesians 5:26). Start by reading ahead of time the Scripture passage that we will focus on in our worship on Sunday and share it with your family. Plan what you will wear, prepare what you will give. Talk to your children about what they will experience and what it means. Robbie Castleman would set the tone when her children were small by telling them ―Jesus is excited. This is His special day!‖ Here are the Scripture readings for the next few weeks: Oct. 7: Matthew 25:14-30 Oct. 14: Luke 10:25-37 Oct. 21: Luke 15:11-32 Oct. 28: Worship is ascribing worth. ―Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture.‖ Psalm 95:6-7 Let‘s get ready to join each other in joyful worship! The Gospel Project Jesus is the Word of God…did you know the entire Bible is His Story? The Gospel Project points kids, students, and adults to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Come discover how God‘s plan of redemption unfolds throughout Scripture…and continues today!

Oct. 7: Nehemiah Prays – Nehemiah 1:1-11; 2:1-8

Christ Connection: Nehemiah believed God would keep His promise to bring His people back home, and this is why he prayed and took action the way he did. As Christians, we believe God will keep His promise to restore the world as a home for His people. Jesus is the One who prays to the Father on our behalf, and He is the only way to salvation. Oct. 14: Jerusalem’s Wall Were Rebuilt – Nehemiah 3:1 – 6:16 Christ Connection: Nehemiah led the people to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem to protect them from their enemies. Jesus came to protect us from our enemies. He died on the cross and rose from the dead to rescue people from sin and death. Oct. 21: Ezra Reads the Law – Nehemiah 8:1-12 Christ Connection: God‘s Word is powerful. When Ezra read God‘s Word, the people changed their ways and loved God more. The Bible says that Jesus is ―the Word.‖ Jesus is God who came to live with people on earth. Jesus has the power to change our hearts. Oct. 28: The Problem of Shallow Worship – Malachi 1:6-14; 3:7-12; 4:1-6 Christ Connection: After Malachi, the prophetic word of God wentsilent for four hundred years. But Malachi prophesied about a messenger who would prepare the way for the Messiah to bring God‘s kingdom. Centuries later, John the Baptist arrived as the messenger who prepared the way for Jesus. The last word of the Old Testament is ―curse,‖ a reminder of the consequence of our sin. But in the New Testament, one of the first words we hear from Jesus is ―blessing.‖ The One who bears our curse is the One who brings us blessing. Nov. 4: From Abraham to Jesus – Matthew 1:1-17 Christ Connection: In the genealogy at the beginning of Matthew‘s Gospel, we see how God‘s plan of redemption is traced from Abraham to David and now to the birth of Jesus—the One who fulfills God‘s promises to Abraham and David. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus incorporates us into Abraham‘s family of faith.

It‘s October! What a wonderful time of year. Fall-harvest-cooler weather-leaves changing. The children are learning this month about apples and pumpkins. In Bible story they will be learning about Ruth and Naomi, Jonah, Baby Moses, The burning bush, and Pharaoh. Some of the classes will be taking a trip to the Pride of the Wapsi pumpkin patch. They will see pumpkins, goats and several other farm animals. They even learn about pollination and bee‘s. The wagon ride to the field where the children have to be careful not to trip over giggle vines is my favorite part of the day. We will also be having a fall parade on Friday November 1

st. The staff

and children will be dress up in their favorites costumes and parade around the building and outside (weather permitting of course). We still have openings in our 3-4 year old M/W/F preschool program. The program runs 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM every M/W/F. This is an excellent opportunity for stay at home parents to have some ―me‖ time. For more information Call Debi or Melissa at 563-344-0063 Deuteronomy 31-8a – ―The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you.‖

We are off to a great start this year. Sunday Learning and the Gospel Project are excellent ways to start our week in the Word. The Bible points to Jesus and our Savior, it is exciting to see the consistency in God‘s word. Use the week to discuss what you‘ve learned, with your whole family!! You are all learning from the same passages. Sunday morning is just one of the few times you can come together as a church family to worship and learn. Be sure your High Schoolers come on Sunday nights for HS Youth Group 6:30-8pm. Middle School meets on Wednesday nights, at 6:45-7:45 pm, after the family dinner time, which runs from 5:30-6:30pm. Wednesday nights are a great mid-week check in for your faith and family. Our students are doing a series on healthy friendships and we are discussing the influence that those around you have on your life and decisions. On Wednesday, October 31, we will be doing a combined Hang Time for MS and HS with a fire pit, food, games and movies. Be sure to join us for the fun.

Communion Preparation: As we prepare to share in the Lord‘s Supper this week, remember once again the meaning behind this very special celebration. Jesus himself instituted this supper as he met with his disciples just before his crucifixion and resurrection. As they shared in a meal together, Jesus took some bread from the table and broke it before them and then taught them that the broken bread was to be a reminder to them of his body which would be broken and hung on a cross. He then took a cup of wine, passed it around the table for all to drink, and told them this would be a continual reminder of the blood which he would shed on the cross in only a few more hours. He taught the disciples that the blood which he would shed was for the forgiveness of sins. As we come together for communion this Sunday, remember once again what a great sacrifice God made on our behalf, so that we could have our sins forgiven and have a personal relationship with him. That God would care so much about us is truly cause for us to be a grateful and thankful people.

Men’s Breakfast - Saturday, Oct. 20th 8:00-9:00 a.m. Meet in youth room for donuts, coffee and juice. We are doing a video Bible study.

Missions Our Church Supports Our church supports 2 Christian schools in other countries. One is in India, a short distance northwest of Allahabad, India. It started as the result of missionaries from the Metropolitan Church Association in Chicago in 1903. Hulda Sorensen‘s parents were missionaries in India with the MCA. In 1947, India became an independent nation & the foreign missionaries were asked to leave. Now, Reverend Enil John and his wife Shalini direct the Christian school. Our support for them this year is $2,900. The second Christian school is in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This school helps children in a very poor part of the city. A person, Andrew Menees, here in the Iowa Quad Cities has taken several mission trips to this school and informed our church of the need. Our support for Libre Infancia this year is $2,900.
