Standardized Testing at Sennett

Measures of Academic Progress™

(MAP) testing

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is giving students MAP tests to determine your

child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to

year in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, and Language Usage. The tests are untimed and are taken on

a computer. This year, students in grades 3-8 will take all three tests in the fall, a quick middle of the

year Math check in December, reading check in January, and then all three tests again as an end of the

year growth assessment in May.

MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for a student’s level of learning. That is, the

difficulty of each question is based on how well the student has answered all of the questions up to that

point. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude

toward testing. With MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still

receiving detailed, accurate information about a student’s growth. During the testing days, your child will

spend a total of about 3 hours completing these tests.

The results of these tests will be used to guide teachers’ instruction. The sub-parts of the individual

tests show where students have strengths and possible needs and will ultimately lead teachers to

students’ instructional levels.

There are a variety of reports and data available from the MAP testing site. One of the richest is the

“Individual Student Progress” report. Your child’s report will be mailed and uploaded within the

assessment section of your child’s infinite campus data. If you have further questions regarding your

child’s results, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations Criterion

Reference Test (WKCE-CRT)

In November eighth grade students at Sennett, as well as across the state, will be taking the Wisconsin

Knowledge and Concepts Examinations Criterion Reference Test (WKCE-CRT). This year only eighth

grade students are doing the assessment and they are only doing Science & Social Studies tests. The

results become part of each student’s record and are used to determine how well students have acquired

the knowledge and skills expected at each level. Student performance on these assessments is reported

in proficiency categories and used to determine the adequate yearly progress of students at the school,

district and state levels.

Fall Fundraiser Reminder Students participating in the Fall Fundraiser AND meeting the

following criteria will be included in a drawing where one student will win their choice

of a $25 Best Buy Gift Card, a $25 iTunes Gift Card or a $25 East Towne Mall Gift Card. Eligible students MUST:

Sennett Book Fair

November 11 – 19 Tuesday – Friday 7:30 am – 3:30 pm November 13 & 18 During Evening Conferences

Save the Date

Battle of the Books: Does your child love to read? Could she/he use an extra reading challenge? In October, Ms. Beckett will be talking to classes about participating in Battle of the Books, a voluntary team activity. Students form

teams, read books on this year’s book list, and then participate in a fun contest in early March where we ask questions about the books and they work as a team to

tell us the title of the book and author. (Example: Q: In what book does an 11-year-old boy learn that he is a wizard? A: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling)

Read On Wisconsin: Looking for more reading challenges? Check out Read On Wisconsin! a project to promote literacy and to help connect Wisconsin students

with great books. Started by Wisconsin’s former First Lady, Jessica Doyle, it is now run by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), a library division of

the UW-Madison’s Education. It features one book a month for students to read, and then they can join in an online discussion and/or submit written reviews. Go to this free website to get involved and read some great books (use the “Browse

Categories” drop-down menu to find the book lists) http://readon.education.wisc.edu/

Did you find school library books the last

time your family cleaned out the car or

house and now you don't know what to

do with them?

Never fear, we want them here! You can send found library books from

any of the MMSD schools to Sennett with your child, and the librarian,

Miss Beckett, will return them to the correct schools. Thank you!

The Sennett Book Fair is during the week of Parent

Conferences. As always, we will have a variety of books in English and Spanish, and both fiction and non-fiction. We use our profits to buy more books for classrooms and the library, as well as electronics like DVD and CD players for reading groups Your child will bring home more information as the fair draws near.

SEE YOU THERE! If you are interested in helping during the Book Fair

please contact Julie Beckett at [email protected]

Just a Friendly Reminder….. If your child is going to be absent for the day, late arriving to school, or leaving early for the day please remember to call the Sennett Attendance line 204-4020 before 8:00 am. Just leave us a message with your child’s name and homeroom teacher. Thank you!

PICTURE RETAKE DAY: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22

Retakes for school pictures will be the morning of Wednesday, October 22. Students who would like to order a different picture packet or missed the previous picture day need to get their pictures taken. The pictures will be used: (1) for the student’s ID card, (2) for the student’s school picture (purchasing a package is optional), and (3) for the yearbook. Order forms, which contain prices, and picture and package options, are on the counter in the Sennett office. Please have your child come prepared with payment and order form There is no charge for retakes; however, the student needs to bring the previous packet in with him/her at the time the new picture is taken.

Information About Code Red Drills, Dean of Students, Quinn Craugh A Code Red is issued when there is a dangerous intruder (someone who is

armed, threatening or violent) inside the school building. Code Red drills are

practiced twice a year. Our first Code Red drill will take place during the month

of October. We practice Code Reds because we want all staff and students to

know the procedures and expectations for a Code Red in the event that a Code

Red is actually issued. Keeping your students in school, under staff supervision is the safest practice during a Code Red.

At school, students are provided a controlled and supervised environment.

Here are some important tips for parents & guardians to know in the event of an actual Code Red:

If students text, e-mail or call you to come and get them, do not come to Sennett. That is the most dangerous

response because you will be putting yourself at risk.

We will communicate to parents & guardians by tweeting on our website, and we will send out a Messenger that we are all clear.

If you have any questions about the Code Red Drill or Code Reds, feel free to contact Quinn Craugh at 204-4031 or [email protected]

OVERTURE CENTER FIELD TRIP PERMISSION SLIP

On Friday, October 24th, the entire Sennett student body – and most of its staff – will attend a performance

entitled the “360 Allstars,” as part of our annual school-wide community-building field trip. It will take place

from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., and will be held in Overture Hall, inside of Madison’s Overture Center.

“360 ALLSTARS is a phenomenal theatrical performance exploring all forms of rotation. Boasting a stellar

cast, including world champion athletes, world class dancers and world renowned musicians, the production

connects the street with the elite to deliver a radical urban circus! A performance like no other, 360 ALLSTARS

reinvents the traditional circus by presenting contemporary performance styles instead of conventional circus

art forms. Replace acrobats with breakdancers, substitute a basketball freestyler in place of a juggler, swap the

unicyclist for a BMX flatlander, and throw in a Roue Cyr artist and you get an exhilarating circus performance,

like nothing you have seen before!”

The cost of this trip is $9.00, which will pay both for the performance and the bus. Please fill out the form

below and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher. It is our hope that every student can appreciate this

performance, as part of our Sennett community.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call: Lori Hillyer (204-1927).

Please print your child’s name clearly!

My child, ________________________________________________, whose homeroom teacher is
