We know that David had high points in faith and low points in disobedience. It is likely that the thoughts of this psalm reflect truth he had come to understand through a variety of experiences. o In the opening verses (vv.1‐6), the singer of this song confesses the truth that God knows all things, including all things about himself. Not only does God’s knowledge abound, but He also shows His care for us (v.5). Through a series of questions and exclamations, the singer concludes that God will continue to know him intimately regardless of where he is (v.7‐12). Traveling to the highest heights or the lowest depths cannot inhibit the ability of God to know or the faithfulness of God to lead (v.10). o God’s very act of creation, knitting us together in the womb, is an expression of intimacy. He knew us before we were made, and He made us personally (v.13‐16). The singer responds in verses 17‐18 by expressing the high value he places on the thoughts of God and his inclusion in those thoughts. The singer responds to being known by God in verses 19‐22 by joining in His thoughts. He takes God’s enemies as his own. In verse 19, his request is for God’s glory, not his own. o The singer ultimately responds in verse 23‐24 by asking that God would continue to search and know him. He recognized the value of being known by God, and his best response is asking that God know him more. Bottom Line: God knows us, and all things, intimately. He is great and greatly to be praised. Questions: What kind of things does the psalmist say God knows in verses 1‐4? Review the psalm. Which verses not only recognize God’s knowledge of us but display His presence with us? Think about the people to whom you feel closest. Do they know more or less about you than others? How close does it make you feel to God, knowing His knowledge is so complete? Consider all we have read about David: He was considered a good king and a man after God’s own heart, but was not without failure. What do the truths expressed about God in this psalm imply about God’s presence with David in his good and bad times? Think about your own life: Do you acknowledge that God knows all things about you? Do you recognize He is with you when you are faithful? Do you recognize He is with you when you are not? Do you depend on His presence and treasure His thoughts? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 66‐67 Greece o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “How Great Thou Art” o Psalm 139 gives us a beautiful picture of God's deep knowledge and wisdom. God knows everything about us. The great wisdom of God is put on display in the creation of our very being. And so we exclaim with the psalmist, King David, when he writes, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it." This week our family worship song is “How Great Thou Art”. It is a declaration of awe and reverence towards God for the great work of His hands and the great work of salvation that He made possible to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. MEMORIZE o 1 Chronicles 29:11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.
