    GEORGE ENESCU

    He was born in the village of Liveni(later renamed "George Enescu" inhis honor), Dorohoi County at thetime, today Botoani County. Heshowed musical talent from early in

    his childhood.

    Many of Enescu's works were influenced by Romanianfolk music, his most popular compositions being the two

    Romanian Rhapsodies(19011902), the opera dipe(1936), and the suites for orchestra.On his death in 1955, George Enescu was interred in thePre Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

    TEFAN ODOBLEJAtefan Odobleja was born into a family of peasants in1902, in IzvorulAnetilor, Mehedini County, Romania. Heattended the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest andbecame a physician, practising as a military doctor inmany cities of Romania, including Bucharest, Dej,Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Lugoj and Trgovite. Despite apoverty stricken and, in some ways, a difficult life, hemanaged to remain productive. His completed works run

    to over 50,000 pages. tefan Odobleja was a Romanianscientist, one of the precursors ofcybernetics. His major work, Psychologie consonantiste, first published in1938 and 1939, in Paris, had established many of the major themes ofcybernetics regarding cybernetics and systems thinking ten years before the

    work of Norbert Wiener was published in 1948. As an appreciation for his entire work of mapping the unknown territory ofthe consonantist psychology, cybernetics and generalized cybernetics,tefan Odobleja was selected posthumously an honorary member of theRomanian Academy (1990).

    NADIA COMNECI Nadia Elena Comneci (Romanian

    pronunciation: [komnet]; born November 12, 1961) isa Romaniangymnast, winner of three Olympic goldmedals at the 1976 Summer Olympics, and the firstgymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in anOlympic gymnastic event. She is also the winner of twogold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics. She is oneof the best-known gymnasts in the world and, alongwith Olga Korbut, is credited with popularizing the sportaround the world.

    Comneci received the Olympic Order, the highest award given bythe International Olympic Committee, in 1984 and 2004. She is the only

    CONSTANTIN BRNCUI Constantin Brncui (Romanian

    pronunciation: [konstantinbrnku]; February 19, 1876March 16, 1957) was an internationally renowned Romaniansculptor whose works, which blend simplicity andsophistication, led the way for numerous modernBrncuigrew up in the village of Hobia Romania, Gorj, near TrguJiu, near Romania's Carpathian Mountains, an area knownfor its rich tradition of folk crafts, particularly ornatewoodcarving.

    In 1903 Brncui traveled to Munich, and from there to Paris. In Paris, hewas welcomed by the community of artists and intellectuals brimming withnew ideas.[3] He worked for two years in the workshop of Antonin Merci of

    the cole des Beaux-Arts, and was invited to enter the workshop of AugusteRodin. Even though he admired the eminent Rodin he left the Rodin studioafter only two months, saying, "Nothing can grow under big trees.

    Mihai Eminescu (Romanian

    pronunciation: [mihajeminesku]; January 15,1850 June 15, 1889) was a Romantic poet,novelist and journalist, often regarded as the mostfamous and influential Romanian poet. Eminescu

    was an active member of the Junimea literarysociety and he worked as an editor for thenewspaper Timpul("The Time"), the officialnewspaper of the Conservative Party (1880-1918).

    His first poems volume was published when he was 16 and hewent to Vienna to study when he was 19.

    Notable works include Luceafrul("Evening Star"), Od n metruantic(Ode in Ancient Meter), and the five Letters

    (Epistles/Satires).
