Letter from the chiefThe word Celebrate is a great one to use when describing the 2014 UNPA programme of issues. From beginning to end, our philatelic year is full of stamps that focus on celebrating subjects and topics that are important to the member states of the United Nations.

We begin our programme with a new Personalised stamp sheet Celebrating the Chinese Lunar Calendar — Year of the Horse. This is the fi fth sheet in the popular series that began in 2010. To date, we have Celebrated the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon and Snake.

Our fi rst commemorative stamp for 2014 Celebrates the UN proclaimed International Day of Happiness which recognises the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world. Is there anything better than Celebrating happiness?

Throughout the rest of the year, we’ll Celebrate International Jazz Day, the next edition of our World Heritage series with India as the featured country, the International Year of Family Farming, UNESCO’S Education First initiative, the 22nd edition of Endangered Species, and fi nally, a personalised stamp sheet issued in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the American Stamp Dealers Association and their October stamp show.

We hope you will enjoy our year long Celebration and add these great new stamps to your collection.

UNPA Sales Counter and Personalized Stamp ShopAccess to UNPA New York Stamp Shop

As part of the renovation project for the General Assembly Building at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UNPA Stamp Shop has been relocated to a temporary Visitor's Centre in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library on the south end of the campus. Due to security limitations, visitors are not allowed into the Centre without prior notice of arrival. To schedule a visit to the UNPA Stamp Shop, please call 001-212-963-7698 (or 1-800-234-8672) for access instructions. A picture ID will be required for entry.

As of the Fall 2014, the access to the revamped UNPA Stamp shop will be possible again to all visitors without prior notice of arrival.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as the iconic General Assembly Building is rejuvenated.

On 17 March 2014, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue a set of 6 stamps on the theme “International Day of Happiness”.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 20 March as the International Day of Happiness. It is a movement to promote happiness as a universal goal and aspiration in the lives of human

beings around the world.

“The pursuit of happiness lies at the core of human endeavours. People around the world aspire to lead happy and fulfi lling lives free from fear and want, and in harmony with nature.”

“Let us reinforce our commitment to inclusive and sustainable human development and renew our pledge to help others. When we contribute to the common good, we ourselves are enriched. Compassion promotes happiness and will help build the future we want.”

Originally launched in 1980, the Flag Series was created to honour the Member States of the United Nations.

The four stamps which will be issued on 27 March 2014, feature the UN member states of Afghanistan, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Serbia.

This is the fi rst time that the UN member states of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Serbia are featured in the UNPA fl ag series. For the member states of Afghanistan and Cambodia, there have been signifi cant changes in the fl ag designs since the last time that they were featured in the fl ag series.

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, the United Nations Postal Administration has

joined with the United Nations Offi ce on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to produce a custom stamp sheet. The sheet has been introduced at the fi fth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention in Panama City, Panama, on 25 November 2013.

Corruption is an insidious plague that has a wide range of corrosive effects on societies. It undermines democracy and the rule of law, leads to violations of human rights, distorts markets, erodes the quality of life and allows organised crime, terrorism and other threats to human security to flourish. The Convention introduces a comprehensive set of standards, measures and rules that all countries can apply in order to strengthen their legal and regulatory regimes to fight corruption. To learn

Please note that the 10th Anniversary of the Convention against Corruption Personalized stamp sheet is a Vienna miscellaneous item and will be sent to customers subscribed to article 24. Customers with a standing order for articles 93 and 94 will not receive this sheet. The € 0,70 sheet (Code 4231) consists of ten stamps (they are exactly the same as the stamps of the Sindelfi ngen Sheet) and can also be purchased with order form 1/2014 in mint or cancelled condition.

On 28 January 2014, UNPA will issue a Chinese lunar calendar personalized stamp sheet celebrating the “Year of the Horse”. This is the fi fth year that UNPA has issued a Chinese lunar calendar sheet. The sheet is composed of ten US$ 1.15 denominated stamps with the UN emblem. The image used on the tabs of the stamps and the background of the sheet was inspired by the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). The sheet was designed and illustrated by Sergio Baradat (United Nations).

Next Stamp Issue

On 30 April 2014, UNPA will issue three mini-sheets of 12 stamps each in the denominations of US$ 0.49, CHF 1.00 and € 0.70 on the theme “International Day of Jazz”.

A souvenir card will also be released on the same day.

BEIJING FORUM Special UNPA and China Post CoversDuring November 2013, the United Nations Postal Administration joined with the China National Philatelic Corporation to honour the 10th

Anniversary of the Beijing Forum organised by Peking University. The Forum is held each year in order to promote the study of humanities and social sciences in the Asia-Pacific region, with a view to facilitating international academic exchanges and trans-cultural discussions that can lead to the social development and the increased prosperity of the world’s citizens and civilizations. The United Nations has been a strong supporter of the Forum since it was first held in 2004.

The philatelic tribute features two different covers with stamps and pictorial cancels from both UNPA and China Post. The cachets were presented to all participants who attended the Forum held 1 - 3 November 2013. UNPA obtained a limited number of the covers for United Nations collectors who are interested in adding them to their collection. Each cover is priced at US$ 6.95 and will be automatically sent to standing order customers who have signed up for New York and Vienna special products (Art. 24).

In 2013, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) was once again the selected winner of a prestigious Asiago International Award for Philatelic Art. On 7 July 2013, the “Olympic Academy Award” for 2012 was presented to the United Nations for a set of commemorative postage stamps highlighting the Rio+20

Conference for Sustainable Development.

The Asiago Philatelic Awards are given annually under the patronage of the President of Italy. The organizing Italian stamp collectors club, Sette Comuni, is one of the most well-known and respected collectors club in Europe.

On 1 June 2012, the United Nations Postal Administration issued three commemorative stamps on the theme “Rio+20”. They were designed by artists Gail Armstrong of the United Kingdom, Shailesh Kandeparkar of India and Russell Fei of China.

Speaking at the awards ceremony in Asiago, Italy, Clarissa Fürnsinn from UNPA highlighted two specific themes of the conference and the stamps - “a green economy in the context of sustainable development including poverty reduction” and “an institutional framework for sustainable development”. She also noted that the beautiful stamps were printed carbon-neutral by Lowe-Martin Group of Canada.

The 2012 award marks the third straight year a United Nations postage stamp has been selected. Past winners include the 2011 International Year of the Forest commemorative stamps and a 2010 personalised stamp sheet designed to draw attention to the problem of Child Labour.
