Fashionable Furniture'HE furniture illustrated herein, and on
display at this exposition,was selected from the regular lines of
the Nelson-Matter FurnitureCompany, one of the oldest and largest
of the factories that havemade Grand Rapids famous in the furniture
world. It is not showpieces, designed for a special purpose, and
differs not at all fromthe ordinary output of the factory. The
object is to show that a
vast American factory, with its elaborate sub-division of labor,
its specialization ofskill, the substitution of mechanical for hand
labor wherever possible, and the greatoutput, not only materially
cheapens the cost of fine furniture, but also lends itself toa
superior style of internal as well as external finish in the medium
and better grades.In design, material, construction and finish it
excels the so-called hand-made furniture.Indeed, it is the
combination of original designs, with attentive skill in
constructionand finish, that has awarded us the superior position
in furniture circles.
