ADVENT AT THE SAINT JOHN PAUL II NATIONAL SHRINE: Rejoice on Gaudete Sunday by coming to Advent Concert and Carols at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. on December 11 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The concert will be based on Sacred Scripture and St. John Paul II’s writings on Advent. Enjoy hot chocolate and cookies during intermission and then sing along to many favorite carols. In addition, on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m., the Shrine will have a Penance Service with Adoration, Confession, and Benediction. ADVIENTO EN EL SANTUARIO NACIONAL SAN JUAN PABLO II: Alégrense el domingo en Gaudete al venir al concierto de Adviento y a los villancicos en el Santuario Nacional de San Juan Pablo II en Washington DC el 11 de diciembre de 3:30 a 5:30 pm. El concierto se basará en la Sagrada Escritura y en los escritos de San Juan Pablo II en Adviento. Disfrute de chocolate caliente y galletas durante el intermedio y luego cante junto a muchos villancicos favoritos. Advent: to listen to God’s voice through the Sacred Scriptures

(Città del Vaticano, Vatican)) Today, the Gospel presents to us the figure of St John the Baptist, who withdrew to the desert of Judaea and, with his preaching, called the people to convert so as to be ready for the coming of the Messiah, now at hand. St Gregory the Great commented that John the Baptist “preaches upright faith and good works, so that the force of grace may penetrate, the light of the truth shine out, the paths to God be straightened and honest thoughts be born in the mind after hearing the word”. The Precursor of Jesus, situated between the Old Covenant and the New, is like a star that heralds the rising of the Sun, of Christ, the One, that is, upon whom —according to another of Isaiah’s prophecies— “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest... the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord” (Is 11:2). —We too are called to listen to God’s voice, that cries out in the desert of the world through the Sacred Scriptures.

(Città del Vaticano, Vaticano) Hoy, el Evangelio nos presenta la figura de san Juan Bautista, el cual se retiró al desierto de Judea y, con su predicación, llamó al pueblo a convertirse para estar preparado para la inminente venida del Mesías. San Gregorio Magno comenta que el Bautista “predica la recta fe y las obras buenas, para que la fuerza de la gracia penetre, la luz de la verdad resplandezca, los caminos hacia Dios se enderecen y nazcan en el corazón pensamientos honestos tras la escucha de la Palabra”. El precursor de Jesús, situado entre la Antigua y la Nueva Alianza, es como una estrella que precede la salida del Sol, de Cristo, es decir, de Aquel sobre el cual —según otra profecía de Isaías— “reposará el espíritu del Señor: espíritu de sabiduría e inteligencia, espíritu de consejo y fortaleza, espíritu de ciencia y temor del Señor” (Is 11,2). —También nosotros estamos llamados a escuchar la voz de Dios, que resuena en el desierto del mundo a través de las Sagradas Escrituras.
