Fathers Day Mass, Friday 31st August 2012
When asked by Mr David Matheson to give this quick reflection Ididn’t know what I was going to talk about as I believe I’m still fairlynew at the game of being a Dad. I look around the chapel thismorning and I see years of fatherhood experience and I begin thethink what sort of a father will I be when my son gets to highschool. Rather than trying to predict the future I wanted to justreflect on my experience so far as a dad.
I have son Joshua who is three and a daughter Emma who is 1 andboth have turned my world upside down. Nothing can prepare youenough for that first time you hold your children when they are born.Sleep has now become a luxury, but somehow that just becomes anormal part of life. I come home from work feeling tired andsometimes a little stressed from the day and all it takes is the smilefrom your children to wipe the problems away.
Before having children I remember celebrating Fathers Day as aday that I tried to make my dad special and proud of me. This wasdone by buying a present, cooking him something or just chatting tohim about the footy. My dad was always proud of everything I dideven when I didn’t think it was a big deal and I never reallyunderstood until I had my own son. My dad was always biastowards me and he thought I was the best at everything and Iremember saying to myself that there is no way I would be thatbias to my son.
Fortunate or not I have followed in his footsteps. I think every dadthinks their son is the best at what they do and why shouldn’t they. Ithink the world Joshua and Emma and I’m proud of everything theydo, whether it be Joshua learning to swim or hitting a ball in cricketor Emma taking her first steps. I am now beginning to understandwhat my dad was going on about. There are many things I loveabout being a dad and especially having a son. One is that I get toshare my sporting trials and tribulations with Joshua. Josh had nochoice but to be a Tigers fan in our household and I have lovedtaking him to the games even though they haven’t been going thatwell this year. The best thing about sharing this passion with a threeyear old is that even when they lose he thinks they have won, whichwas a regular occurrence this year. His innocent comment bringsyou back to reality and puts a beaming smile on your face.
Nothing beats coming home from work to a cuddle and kiss fromyour kids. Nothing can compete with witnessing a milestone in your
children’s lives and nothing will ever come close to hearing your sonsay I love you.
In my short time as being a dad I’m only just getting used to thisFathers Day celebration. I try to think back to before we had kidsand I couldn’t fathom not having my 2 children in my life. Life wouldbe boring without them. I always think if I could be half the dad myfather was to me then I will be doing a great job.
Even at this early stage of fatherhood I find it hard to sit back andwatch my son make a mistake but he knows that I will be there fora shoulder to cry on when things don’t go his way. I’m excited aboutteaching him to play footy, cricket and to take him camping. I lovethe fact that thinks I can fix everything even though I’m a uselesshandyman. These are the things that make me proud to be a dad.
To all the fathers amongst us this morning, I hope you have a greatfathers day on Sunday. Boys, make sure you spoil them as muchas possible as they are proud of all your achievements. Don’t beafraid to share those three special words with them sometime onSunday, it might just make their day.

The Year 12 Construction class at Holy Cross Rydecommenced the construction of a timber play area at StCharles earlier this year. It was an excellent opportunity to puttheir trade skills to good use and reinforce what they havelearnt in the classroom in a ‘real world’ practical setting. Thearea consists of a large elevated deck, sand-pit and cubbyhouse. Throughout the construction stages, students have beenfollowing a set of plans, concreting footings, erecting bearersand joists and laying decking amongst many other things.
The play area is nearing completion. It was anticipated that itwould have been completed at the conclusion of Term 2, butdue to the ongoing poor weather, it is now scheduled to befinished in Term 3.
All that is remaining is a handful of decking boards, the cubbyhouse walls and roof. The sand will then be shovelled into thesandpit and a coat of decking oil will be added for protection tomake it last.
It has been great to see the Year 12 Holy Cross studentsworking hard with their clients peering over their shoulders andwatching it progress.
Yours truly,
David SullivanTAS and VET Coordinator
Ever aware of Australia’s growing relationship with our Asianneighbours and the implications for our students at Holy CrossCollege, we have committed to a focus on Asia and specificallyJapan in the Year 8 program throughout this year. We werefortunate, at the beginning of 2012, to receive an Asia Literacygrant from the Australian Government to support a collaborativeproject between Year 5 students at Holy Spirit North Ryde andYear 8 students at the College, focused on Japan. Our initialgoal was to build relationships between the students on eachcampus. They have had a number of opportunities to interactand get to know each other, paving the way for thecollaborative work, which has now started in earnest.
On Fri, 24 Aug, the boys from Year 8 Gallagher and Delanyspent the day at Holy Spirit, North Ryde, working with half of theYear 5 students there whilst Year 8 Hannigan and Dwyer playedhost at Holy Cross College to the remaining students from HolySpirit. Our students worked in groups with the youngerstudents, leading their learning and learning by being teachersto the Year 5s’. They worked on designing a travel itinerary forvisitors to Japan of all ages and interests. Our students provedto be a wonderful resource for Year 5 from Holy Spirit as theYear 8 boys completed a project in Term 2 for Japanese with asimilar focus.
The collaboration will continue on Friday, Sept 7, when all ofthe students will work at Holy Cross College for the entire dayon a short multimedia representation of the travel itinerary. Ourproject reaches its climax with a Japanese Activities Day andShowcase of the work on Monday 10 Sept, again hosted atHoly Cross College. Year 5 and Year 8 students and teachersfrom both schools, our special guests from each school and ourAsia Ambassador, Debra Hazelton General Manager of theMizuho Corporate Bank, will join us as we celebrate the fruits ofa wonderful collaboration focused on Japan. We cordially invitethe Year 5 and 8 parents to join us on the afternoon of the 10Sept for the Showcase and to this end, parents will receive aflyer providing all of the relevant information in the near future.
Included below are some comments from our students, showingtheir engagement with our Asia Literacy project.
"A great learning experience and opportunity to share ourknowledge with the younger children" Calum
"I enjoyed helping Year 5 students at Holy Spirit and sharing ourexperiences with them.” Hudson
"It was a great opportunity to interact with younger students ina different environment" Christian
"The younger kids showed me how to use an iPad so it wasgood to learn from them as well" Michael
"It was really good sharing the experience with them and wewere confident helping because we knew a lot about Japanfrom our Term 2 work." Jack

Monday 27 August 2012 - This morning Holy Cross Collegewelcomed a very special guest, Professor Michael Mulcahy, currently the Professor of Music at Northwestern University,Chicago and Trombonist with the Chicago SymphonyOrchestra.
Michael attended Holy Cross College from 1970-1973. Hebecame the principal trombonist for the Tasmanian, Melbourne,Cologne and Chicago Symphony Orchestras.
In his speech, Professor Mulcahy challenged students to makethe most of their opportunities and seek to benefit from thetalents of others. “My love of music didn’t crystallise until Iengaged with the band at Holy Cross. I’d urge you all to go outon a limb and challenge yourself. Be open to your owngreatness and be alert to and ask questions of those aroundyou who can help you achieve.”
Brother Mark Ryan, Michael’s music teacher at Holy Cross said“I was privileged to have taught Michael at Holy Cross CollegeRyde and to have been associated with him when he firstbegan playing in the College band. Michael’s achievement issomething in which we all share. It is my hope that he will be aninspiration to a new generation of players.”
College Principal, Adam Taylor said “Professor Mulcahyresigned from his secure position with a world class orchestrain the rich cosmopolitan city of Melbourne and bought aone-way ticket to Germany. For many years, he surroundedhimself with people who were better at his art than he was. Itwas a step out into the dark that showed courage andself-belief. While it has not been an easy road, he has risen tothe pinnacle of his profession through hard work and personalsacrifice. He shared with the boys a truly inspirational story thismorning.”
Michael is currently undertaking a regional tour with SydneySymphony Brass.

On the evening of the 22nd August, 2012, Brother JeromeEllens, Congregation Leader, and Brother Joseph Njamatholil ofthe Indian Province, arrived at Dubai international airport tobegin a Patrician mission at Dubai.
While there have been Patrician connections in Dubai for manyyears, the Patrician move to the region has been comparativelysudden. Br Jerome has never been one to run on the spot, andsoon after negotiating the missioning of two Brothers to SouthSudan his gaze was turned to the United Arab Emirates.
An invitation came from Bishop Paul Hinder of the Vicariate ofSouth Arabia to consider partnering with the Diocese inadministering St. Mary’s Catholic School, Dubai. Br Jerome andBr Joseph were there in May meeting with the Bishop andothers of the school executive. Br Joseph was interviewed forPrincipal of the school and was accepted.
As stated, that happened in May and three months later BrJerome and Br Joseph returned to Dubai to a warm - very warm- welcome.
Their arrival in Dubai was so swift that accommodation for themhad not been organised - so reminiscent of so many beginningsof Patrician missions over the years - and so they stayed withthe Capuchins of the St Mary’s parish for the first week duringwhich time they revisited Bishop Paul Hinder, visited theComboni Sisters, and had lunch with the managing director ofSt Mary’s Catholic Schools Mr Joe Flynn.
The school was founded in 1968 by Fr Eusebius Daveri, just asingle room with two lay teachers. Today it has over 2,500students of over forty nationalities. The Comboni Sisters tookover the school in 1978 and developed it into the best Englishschool in Dubai.
Now it comes under the leadership of a Patrician: Br JosephNjamatholil. We believe the staff is second-to-none, and so hewill have ample support to maintain the efficiency andeffectiveness of the school as a centre of Christian learning.
Br Jerome will remain in Dubai until May 2013 when other
Brothers will come from India to join Br Joseph in communityand in the school.
Since 2007 the Patrician Brothers, under the leadership of BrJerome Ellens, have moved into three new missions: Ghana,South Sudan, and now U.A.E. Something amazing for such asmall Congregation, made possible largely through thegenerosity and courage of the Indian Province which hassupplied, and will supply, the Brothers for all these missions -Brother Ernest Gaudion will soon be arriving in Ghana to jointhe Brothers there.

The fastest cheetah on Earth has done it again, breaking herprevious world record for the 100-meter dash and setting a newbest time of 5.95 seconds.
This feat surpasses the fastest of all human 100-metersprinters by almost four seconds. Usain Bolt , the Jamaicansprinter who competed at the 2012 London Olympics, holds thehuman world record at 9.58 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
Cheetahs, of course, are built to run faster than humans, regularly clocking speeds of up to around 60 miles per hour(96.5 kilometers per hour). During a photo shoot with NationalGeographic Magazine, a cheetah from the Cincinnati Zoonamed Sarah covered 100 meters at 61 mph (98 kph).

Dear parents and lovers of the arts,
As those who attended this year’s Creative Arts Night wouldattest, the Arts are flourishing at Holy Cross College Ryde.
The Year Twelve Visual Arts students submitted their bodies ofwork last Monday. While many of the works had beencompleted weeks in advance, there was a collective sigh ofrelief when the whistle blew. Although the students were acutelyaware of each other’s progress during the year, the CreativeArts Night was for many, their first opportunity to criticallyanalyse the work of their peers. It was heartwarming to seepats on backs and even hugs in response to the works. Thegroup has since labelled their work ready for marking. Knowinghow much effort was directed into the work we share highexpectations.
Here is a taste of some of the reasoning behind one of thisyear’s finest works: “Days, Years, Lifetimes” (2012) by JeremyPollicina.
“Days, Years, Lifetimes” is atriptych of oil paintings. Eachcanvas features a commonperspective but of a differenttime. The work makes referenceto William Turner’s “ScarboroughTown and Castle: Morning: BoysCatching Crabs” (1810). Turner’swork is a watercolour paintingthat represents a specificmoment in time. My body of workre-contextualises his work butmakes the distinct intervention totest how Turner might haveotherwise viewed the same vista
had he observed it at a different time. By playing out theseatmospheric scenarios I am able to explore the range of qualitiesoil paints offer in terms of representing light.
The growth of the tree, the shifting light source and the changingtides are notable indications that time is passing between eachframe. The observation of passing time is a central concern of thework. Going by how the tree in the mid-ground grows, decadeshave passed between the first and third frame. Furthermore, eachframe is distinct with the orientation of the sun (the light source),suggesting a progression from dawn to midday to dusk. Eachcondition demands a distinctly different palette, forcing a new wayof seeing the same scene.
Despite the compositional similarities, each of these framespresented new challenges in how I used the oil paint to create abelievable imagined impression of Turner’s Scarborough Townlandscape. This was achieved through numerous layers of paintbuilt up upon one another. Dry brushing was a frequently usedtechnique to create minimal amount of saturated colour but in thesame instance capture a sense of the light upon the landscape.
These students are now a mere ninety minutes of brillianceaway from successful completion of the HSC Visual Artscourse. The Visual Arts exam is a difficult beast so we’ve stillgot much work to do.
I’d like to thank both the parents and students for their ongoingdedication and support to the Visual Arts this year.
Warm wishes,
John PhillipsSenior Visual Arts
