Bad Habits aud Mew te Cure Them. There lately died ia New York a well.known printer aad publisher, Mr. Daxibl

Eakphaw, wbo bad succeeded in amassing nlarge property, and who did much in bis timetoelevate tbe character of the craft. Amongthe legacies in bis wilt, tbe most of which aresaid fo exemplify tbe benevolence of bis dis-position, there ia one which the New YorkExpress thinks entitled to particular admira-tionaud praise, and which it recommends asan example to others. The particular clausein bis will alluded to, is acodicil, which givesto the divisee* targe amount of real estateprovided h* shall abstain from theutt of tobacco,?in anyform, foraperiod of tix months prior tothe testator* death; and if, after he gainspossession ol said estate, heshould again taaeup tbe use of tobacco, said property is to be jtakes from him and devoted te building ahouse for superannuatedsoberprinters.Ifany thingcould stop tobacco chewing, it

would be to leave a devotee of the weed pro*peny on sneh conditions, bnt we doubt tbeirwisdom and benevolence. We think it wouldhave bee* a greai deal more human* in thelata Mr. Fanhhaw to have left bis devisee tochew his quid in peace, and to have be-queathed tbe money at once to the "superan-nuated soberprinters." Mankind in ail ageshave employed stimulants of some kind, andthere is none more innocent _an tobacco-There are cases ia which iv use is injurious, aud, like oiber good things, it may be nsed toexcess, but, on tbewhole, there aresome hab-its agood deal worse. There Is such a thingas beingrighteous in indifferent matters, andrather lax ia those of importance. In thosesections where the smoking and chewingoftobacco have been relinquished, there isagooddealmorehatred, malice, -ndall nncharitable-ness than there was in former times. I The Great Supply Nutiea.Recent discoveriesof gold andsilverin Cali-

fornia, Utah,Oregon and Kansas, it is believed, will increase the American yearlyproduct toabovesixty, aad perhaps seventy, millions ofdollars. Last year nearly seventy-five mil-lions, considerably more than tbe product, were sent abroad, besides fourmillions of balesof cotton, great quantitiesof breadsttiffs, to-bacco, Ac. The week before last, a millionand a half in specie went to Europe. It is es-timated that tbe specie now in tbe countryamounts to two hundred and eighty millionsof doltars.

Last night this localitywas visited by theseverestbail storm I ever knew to occur. Ittookplace abouthalf-past 8 o'olock, and last-ed near half an bonr. During tbat time thebail fell thick and fast. Tbestones tbat fell inthe early part of tbe storm were tbe largest Ioversaw. Thegeneral size was thatof a par-fridge'segg ; but verymany were as largo aswalnuts andseveral were found as large as ahen's egg. Ilearned to-day that tbeveteranCol.Crowmeasured one which fell at his bouse, aad found it four inches in circumference, af-ter having been carried some distance andbeld in tbe band until the measuring tapecould be found. A short distance west of thissomestones were picked up which weighedhalf a pound ! Such bail stones are not seenoften in a man's life-time. To have been ontin snch a stormwould certainly bave exposedone to the chance of serious injury. Anyskull, savean African's,would have been indanger of a cracking by the descent upon itfrom cloud-land ofa hail-stone weighinghalfa pound.

The crops arenotsufficiently advanced, savethe wheat, to be injuredby encb a storm, andthere is so little of that here that thefarmersbad notmuch anxiety aboatit. Tbe immenseand very superbgardenof tbe White SoiphurSprings Company looked much tbe worse fortheweather this morning; but a few brightdays will restore toconvalescence aud flatter-ingpromise theplanUand vines whichlookedso vigorous yesterday morning, and whichwereso severely knocked about by tbe haillast nigbt. This garden has been the object ofthe constant careand attention of the skillfulgardener. Nightafter night he has kept bisvigilsin ivwalks, ready with his assistants 10protect bis tender plants from a nippingfrost, which may come iv aa evil hour of th* night.'without warning. His vegetables are thus ina very forward condition, aud the companyhope to supply their table, at least, with theinevitable tomatoes from their own grounds. It is gratifying that the storm did tbem no :more harm.

This morningthe ground beneath each treeis strewu with tbe leaves tbat were cut downby tbe hail. They were generally broughtdownin clusters, tbe hail cutting off the smallbranches with several leaveson each. Itwasindeeda tremendous affair. L.

Tbe farmers in this vicinity are aboutdoneplantingtbeir crops of tobacco. Although thefly destroyed a large quantity of tbe plantsduringtbecool dry weather, in the early partof spring, I think there is an average cropplanted in this section. There arc large quan-tifies of tbe last years crop that remains un-sold, tbe farmers not beingwillingto take tbeprices offered by the buyers. Some lots ofwheat are taking the rust?supposed to becaused by tbs recent wet spells, which, nodoubt, will provean injury to some extent. The crops of corn and oats look well, aadpromise*, thus tar, to bs tbe largest that havebeen tor several years.Th* merchants In this portion of the StateI have experienced a dull trade this spring, iowingto thedetermination of the largerpor-tion of onr citizens not tobuy anymore goodaofNorthern manufacture tbau theyare com-pelledto. This is a step In the right way, andwill be carried out to a great extent. Theconsumers prefer goods of Southern manu-facture, and a good many are determined toencourage only Southern enterprise. Let themerchants eicourage Southern manufactories.aud we will noonace tbe Southern States withplenty manufacturing establishments tobountifully supplyour wants. W.M.N.
