To start off

In this unit, John and Mary are going to learn the most important festivities

they can find around the world. This unit is divided into four activities:

Activity 1: in this activity you are going to know a lot of things about

festivities, especially about Mardi Gras, Carnival and the Chinese New Year.

Activity 2: in this activity you are going to work with the Simple Past Tense.

Activity 3: in this activity you will be a TV reporter and you will learn about

another special festivity: Halloween.

Final activity: you have to make an audio recording.

At the end of this unit, you will have done several types of activities: you will have

to work with classmates or independently, you will have to think, to go a step ahead if you want more information, to evaluate yourself, etc.

These are some of the skills you will be practising along this unit:

You are going to work with the Simple past Tense.

In some activities we will work in groups and in others we will do it in pairs.

In all cases, you have to value and respect the different opinion of your

classmates.

In pair or group work you will need to plan what you are going to do before

actually doing the activity.

In this unit you will work with a sound recording program and you will learn

how to publish your work in Internet.

Activity 1: Special Days, Customs and Traditions

It's your turn: Special Days, Customs and Traditions

In this activity you are going to work with the simple past, asking and answering

questions about festivities, especially about Mardi Gras and Carnival.

First, you have to visit this link:

Festivals and special days.

You will have to identify the most important festivities, learn some typical things

and be able to write a little description. You have to complete a document and you

will share it with your teacher using Google Docs.

When you finish, the whole class will search the Internet to find some information

about local festivities, for example:

The date.

What's the typical food? And the typical drink?

Is there any traditional dress?

How do people celebrate the festivity?

Write this information in a document and then, compare the documents orally. For

example, you may search for 23rd April or St. George's Day.

Write the information about local festivities in the shared text document. Complete it including some pictures that illustrate this festivity.

Now you are going to do a different activity. You have to write a text document in

Google Docs. In the document, you will imagine one day in the zoo. You have to

write about the wild animals that you can visit in the zoo. When you finish writing it, share the document with your teacher.

It is important to know that the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring

Festival is the most important traditional festival of the Chinese calendar year. It is also held in other countries of Eastern Oceania.

First, visit this link to know about the Chinese New Year:

And you, how do you celebrate the New Year? Create a text document using Google Docs and answer the following questions:

When do you celebrate the New Year?

Who do you celebrate it with?

Which is the typical food for New Year's Eve? and for New Year's Day?

Is there any tradition for good luck?

Is there any special tradition in your family at New Year?

Now, use the same document to write about the differences between the Chinese

and your New Year celebration. You may use the questions above. For example,

you may start writing this: “Chinese people celebrate the New Year in spring, but I

celebrate it in winter, in December”.

You are going to work in groups of 4 people. You have to find information and

compare the typical things about Mardi Gras and Carnival.

The king cake, a very special cake.

The queen or king of the carnival.

The floats.

The ornaments.

You have to find pictures about the topics above. Insert them in a text document and write about what they mean. Later, you will discuss it with your classmates.

Finally, you will show what you know about the festivities of Mardi Gras and

Carnival. Fill in the Google Docs form that your teacher will email you. The mail

Activity 3: A TV report

Let's practise together: A TV report

Can you imagine going to the Fallas in Valencia now? Have you ever been there?

What did you think about it? In this activity, you will make a description about a festivity that you have been to.

You may talk about festivities in your own country or from UK or USA. You can find some festivities visiting the following links:

Be my Valentine.

Bonfire night.

You will work in pairs to do an interview which you have to record. Ask your partner some questions about the festivity that he or she has described.

Name of festivity.

Why do we celebrate it?

Date of the festivity.

Region where it is celebrated.

You are a reporter who will talk about that festivity. Write down your partner's

answers using the simple past. You can use this template. Later, send it to your teacher by email.

You can use a web cam to film the interview. You may edit your film with Avidemux. If you need some help, ask your teacher.

When you finish, you will show the film on the interactive whiteboard. The whole class will watch all the films to vote for the best film and the best reporter.

Finally your teacher will make a video blog and publish all the films there.

Task: An interview

In this activity you are going to work in groups of three students.

In your group there is a reporter, a policeman and a person who was at a Carnival party.

In the Carnival party someone stole the person's wallet and now, the reporter is

interviewing the policeman and the man.

You have to record this conversation. You can use Audacity. First you have to write down the dialogue of the interview in a presentation.

In the dialogue you have to use the simple past tense and you have to talk about:

What happened at the carnival?

What was in the wallet?

What did the police do?

Have they arrested the thief?

Your interview must have 10 questions and 10 answers.

Read the questions aloud and record your voice using Audacity. You can practise a few times.

You have to send the recording by email to your teacher.
