Even the best blockingwide receivers have to earntheir keep predominantly aspass catchers, of course, andOrlando does that just fine. Heplays the “X” receiver, orweak-side receiver, in NewHampshire’s single-backspread offense.

Last season, Orlandocaught 15 passes for 281 yardsand two scores, averaging 18.7yards a catch. In three gamesthis year, he has six catches for81 yards and leads the Wild-cats (1-2) with a 13.5 yards-per-catch average.

“Joey just doesn’t drop theball and he really knows howto get open, which you have todo to play at this level,” Cartysaid. “He’s out there by him-self usually, opposite our‘trips’ and double wides, andwe rely on Joey to get open. Inany zone coverage there aregaps, and Joey has a knack forfinding the place to be.”

Orlando was born to playfootball. His dad, Bo Orlando,was a standout defensive backat West Virginia and playednine seasons in the NFL withHouston, San Diego, Cincin-

nati and Pittsburgh.“Dad’s always there for

me,” Joey Orlando said. “Wetalk every Friday night forabout 20 minutes. He asks if Iam ready to play, and we talkabout how my brother Antho-ny, who plays (wide receiverand defensive back as a junior)at Liberty now, did.”

Joey said his dad neverforced football on him.

“That was one of the rea-sons we moved down to Beth-lehem (from Bo’s football-crazy hometown of Berwick,Pa.); he wanted me to get awayfrom all that,” Joey Orlandosaid. “He told me I didn’t haveto play, but I loved the gameand when we moved I couldcreate my own name.”

Those Friday night phonecalls have all too often dis-cussed losses of late. Joeylamented Liberty’s loss toNazareth last Friday —“they’d had such a goodstart,” he said — and NewHampshire is a surprising 1-2. Losing to FBS power Pitt38-16 was not a shock, but lastweek’s 28-25 loss to tradi-tional Colonial Athletic Asso-ciation doormat Rhode Is-land was, especially for ateam that was ranked No. 16nationally in one FCS polland is usually a conferencecontender.

“We have to play togetherbetter and play tighter foot-

ball,” Orlando said. “Our de-fense has played good, butwhen our offense gets stoppedwe only stop ourselves.Against Rhode Island we shotourselves in the foot whilethey played a very good game.If we can play together betterwe can rise to the expectationsweek in and week out, no mat-ter who we play. We had agood week of practice, shoredsome things up; everyone’smind is right and we are readyfor the next challenge.”

And that will be Lehigh.Orlando said it will be fun toface his hometown university,who will be trying to snapNew Hampshire’s 10-game

home winning streak. Lehighhas not beaten the Wildcatssince 1982 and trails the all-time series 9-2.

“(Lehigh) did recruit meand I gave it some seriousthought, but I wanted to getout of town and out of thestate,” Orlando said.

That said Orlando enjoyeda journey back to Pennsylva-nia two weeks ago when hehad a reunion with some oldfriends at Pittsburgh.

“It was fun to play against(Easton Area High Schoolgraduate and redshirt sopho-more defensive back) JarredHolley like I did in the pastand to see (fellow Liberty

graduate) Devin Street (a Pittredshirt freshman wide re-ceiver), who played I playedwith for years,” Orlando said.

In a 2009 encounter with anFBS team, Ball State, Orlandoenjoyed a huge game with fourcatches for 70 yards and atouchdown in a 23-16 win.

“Players in the FCS look atthose games as an opportuni-ty to prove themselves againstthe top level,” Orlando said. “Iscored my first college touch-

down and played hard; it allhappened so fast you almostforgot it.”

Orlando hasn’t forgottenthe lessons learned of late bythe Wildcats, though.

“You have to execute everyplay, every week, every prac-tice,” he said. “We need to doall the little things right.”
