The Feast And The Famine !Washington D.C, capital of the United States, and home to the inspiration of this

song. Who knew the nations capital was such a rocking place? Work hard play hard

is the motto and with 535 miles of bookshelves in congress library its clear why

Washington is in need of such a heavy tune from the Foo Fighters. Several guitars arranged down to two, for easy covering by a covers band this is

the supplementary PDF to accompany your video lesson. Standard tuning, here we

go!

!INTRO !This gives us a great opportunity to quickly look at the rhythmic feel of the song.

The whole song uses a consistent ‘pushed’ feel or ‘Anacrusis’. This means that the

riffs and melodies are pushed ahead of the first beat of the bar, creating a feeling of

excitement and movement. An easy way to think of this is shown below.

!!

!!You can see the red lines are full bars but it is as if everything has been dragged

forward in time by one half beat. This is a simplified picture of anacrusis, Now lets

explore where the ideas come from. Take a humble major triad (Below, 1). If we

lose the highest note and play the string open (Below, 2) we can see that our

pattern is simply the highest three strings (Below, 3). Picking fragments of larger

chords is an easy way to create nice sounds and riffs! In our intro www are simply

moving this shape based off a B major and G major chord.

VERSE !We then enter the Verse where we continue our intro idea. Start by playing the

intro twice more as written previously before moving down to a third chord (this

time the top fragment of an E7 chord):

!!!!!!!!You play this E7 chord twice to complete one round of the verse. We will play the

verse twice.

HEAVY CHORUS !We now have another pushed section, this time with full chords and alternating

notes at the top. I don't have the time to explain it here but I did in the video so

watch closely for the breakdown.

This is the end of the first round of the heavy verse. It is

the same length and roughly the same structure of the

first verse and similarly we will do it twice however on

the second round it is different:

!HEAVY VERSE ROUND 2 !

!!Largely the same as the

last round, but with an

open E note now.

HEAVY CHORUS !We then repeat the heavy chorus as described earlier.

!!MIDDLE !

This part isn't played on a guitar so far as I

could tell but, I’ve arranged some chords

that fit really well so here they are:

!!!

!!!!Play through these twice before moving on to the tricky next bit……

BREAKDOWN - CONTINUED !!!!!!!!

As you can see we cut the final bar short and then go back to our intro pattern, but

only for a short snippet this time. !HEAVY CHORUS !We then repeat the heavy chorus as described earlier.

ALTERNATE CHORUS !Straight out of the heavy chorus into the

following:

BREAKDOWN !We then repeat the the breakdown as played earlier only this time after ending it

short we’re going to be repeating a bar like so:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I incorrectly said 8 repetitions of that bar in the video however it is in fact 10.

WHOOPS!! I’m only human guys!!

OUTRO !Nearly done!! this is what it looks like:

You can see that we have six more repetitions of our riff from the middle section

and to end off a set of stabs on a rather stretchy chord. If your fingers cant make it

leave off the D string note (fret 9).

See you in part 2!
