Being teenagers who are undergoing a lot of changes, she advised the young adults to understand their parents because they, too, are going through a transition, more commonly known as mid-life crisis. It is a stage in their lives that they assess factors in their lives such as career, finances, family life and health, among others. Living the RosaryBy: Susan Amoroso

Growing up in a very religious Catholic family, Rosario, my paternal grandmother , would gather all her ten children to pray the Angelus every six o’clock in the evening and pray the rosary before bedtime. Her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the rosary was pervading and evident to her family and friends. Her house was always filled to the rafters with her ten children and five daughters -in –law, one son-in-law, grandkids, other relatives and friends every Sunday.

Continuing Ms. Techie Duran-Dy’s talk series, she focused on the scholar’s relationship with other people (You) particularly their relationship with their parents. Being teenagers who are undergoing a lot of changes, she advised the young adults to understand their parents because they, too, are going through a transition, more commonly known as mid-life crisis. Love Life Talk Series Part 2 ... from page 1

All of us gather in her house for lunches and merienda every Sunday as far as I could remember. She lived to a ripe age of 93, still very lucid except for her partial blindness due to diabetes at the time of her death.

The family rosary tradition was passed on to us grandchildren if we stayed or visited with her. October was very special to her. October is always rosary month for the family. Every night on those 31 days of October, in the evening after supper all of us would troop to the family room in the second floor where the family altar was. In the altar the large image of Christ the King and the Blessed Virgin Mary looked down at us in their majestic gaze. Together all of us would kneel and say the rosary. My aunt who is the eldest of her daughters would lead the prayers. Sometimes I would be given the honor to lead the prayers, a special task not delegated to anyone. Leading the rosary at the time was very big deal to me personally. As a young girl growing up in our very traditional Catholic family leading the family prayers in my grandmother’s house is an honor. To this day when I think of those days I still feel proud about myself. I was considered the favorite apo of my Lola Sayong ( her pet name).

Looking back, those October evenings in her house still holds a special place in my heart. The rosary is very special to her. Her very name speaks of the rosary. Rosario , a Spanish word means rosary. She was widowed early. My father the eldest was in his teens and the youngest, a twin, both girls were four years old. Her father ‘s family was landed and donated lands to the town when my grandmother was growing up. But the patriarch, a musician and conductor was also a gambler. By the time she was in her teens the family had lost almost everything except for the small family residential

land. She also did not marry into a rich family. So when she was widowed, the responsibility of raising ten children and sending them to school was almost insurmountable. But she had faith in the Lord and was guided by Mama Mary. Through prayers and hard work, with the help of the siblings themselves, my father taking the place of their late father, all successfully went on to college. My father , the eldest and the other older sons working their way to college. Three became lawyers, one is a CPA-lawyer, another one became a journalist -lawyer and my four aunts graduated with education degrees. This was no mean feat for a young poor widow with ten children in the fifties just after World War II.

In a way, I could say Mama Mary was beside her , guiding her and the children as they survived the insurmountable odds of raising ten children with no inheritance or fortune to rely on. Armed with the rosary and the tender mercies of our most loving God with Mama Mary leading her, my grandmother proved her worth as a true Marian in the way she lived her life. My grandmother’s life is like living the fifteen mysteries of the rosary. The joyful mystery was during her childhood, the sorrowful was during the time when she was widowed, hard up and alone to raise ten children. The glorious days came when her children were grown-up.

This month of October, let us show to our Mother , the Mother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ how much we love her. Shower her not only with flowers at her feet and around her. Let us honor her with prayers, saying the rosary if we can. The St. Andrew the Apostle has lined up October activities in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. Please see church announcements in the Parish Works .

After developing their relationships with their loved ones, Ms. Techie made the scholars reflect on what else they can do for their own country. She showed them videos of people considered as heroes by their simple acts of sharing with the less fortunate. She also reminded the scholars that they should strengthen their relationship with God (Part 3: ME and God!) as it will give them the hope and courage to go on with the challenges that they have to face. Truly, having a strong faith in the Lord will be the youth’s weapon in living in a world of temptation, but with God by our side, we can never go wrong.

Feast of St. Michael the Archangel... from page 1

The procession commemorating the Feast of St. Michael the Arch Angel with a marching band held at San Miguel Village

Formore than a year, activities at the SMV Park were suspended due to the construction of the basketball court and the SMV Social Hall. Now that the construction has been completed, the San Miguel Village Sub-Parish Council in coordination with the San Miguel Village Association resumed the regular 2nd Saturday anticipated mass at 5:00pm at the new Social Hall last August, 2012.

The celebration of the SMV Fiesta started with a procession at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish at 3:30pm with the accompaniment of the BrgyPoblacion Bandthat passed through all the streets of SMV. This was followed by the celebration of the Holy Mass

celebrated by our Parish Priest, Msgr. Dennis Odiver, who by the way, joined the procession all the way through.

In grateful recognition for their dedicated service to St. Andrew the Apostle Parish Church, Msgr. Dennis honored and gave a St. Michael, the Archangel Picture/Prayer frame as a token of appreciation to past and present officers and active members of the SMV Sub-Parish Council.

A simple fraternal agape followed the fiesta mass. Guests from the neighboring villages were present to join the festivities. The day ended with a smile on everyones faces.

Happy 27th Sacerdotal Anniversary, Fr. Allan !!! (October 5)

May you be blessed always as you continue to do God’s works and blessing others with your prayers and wisdom.
