FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
I wonder if the disconnect between the mood ‘outside’ Church and the Scripture readings ‘inside’
Church during the Advent season was something you noticed. On the ‘outside’ it is Christmas way be-
fore it is Christmas. But ‘inside,’ the Scripture readings gradually prepare the Church to finally encoun-
ter her Savior. Integral to that preparation is an invitation to look ‘inside.’ Advent invites us all to look
inside ourselves. That is why Advent is a contemplative season. It is a season to pause, to be patient, to
search a little more intently, to look a little more deeply, to pray a little more fervently, and to love a
little more intensely. However, if we constantly live on the ‘outside,’ it is possible for us to miss the
‘inside,’ – not just the mood inside the Church but, Emmanuel, God ‘with’ us, the Word who became
flesh to dwell ‘among’ us!
As you hold this bulletin and read this letter, Advent has ended. It is Christmas! My prayer for every one of us is sim-
ple. I pray that our sentiment ‘inside’ this Christmas is precisely what Christ came to give to us. What did Christ come to give
us? When the angel informed Joseph about Mary’s pregnancy, he was told, “She will bear a son and you are to name him Je-
sus, because he will SAVE his people from their sins” (Mt:1:18). At his birth, an angel appeared to the shepherds and said,
“Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great JOY that will be for all the people” (Lk 2:10). Again,
when the angels sang the very first Christmas carol to the shepherds, they said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth,
PEACE to those on whom his favor rests” (Lk 2: 14). These events tell us that Jesus came to save us from ourselves, from our
sins, and give us joy and peace!
Saved! Joy! Peace! I pray that these are our sentiments ‘inside.’ The good thing about Christmas is that Christmas is
not merely a day. Christmas is a season! We have an entire season to relish the joy, the peace, the salvation that Christ came
to bring us. My prayer is that as we continue to appreciate the beauty of lights, decorations, Christmas trees, mangers, family,
friends, and gifts ‘outside,’ we will also be beaming with peace and joy ‘inside,’ – the peace and joy that comes from the One
who came to SAVE us!
I wish each one of you a blessed Christmas and a peace-filled New Year!
Fr. Satish Joseph, Pastor

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS The Heider family is so very grateful to all
those who have been so kind and thoughtful to us dur-
ing our precious mama Rita’s illness and following
her transitioning from this earthly life into heaven!
We are profoundly saddened over her loss but joyful
for her and grateful for the members of our parish
family. What a blessing our bereavement ministers
and music ministers and liturgical ministers are! And
Fr. Satish, just think: the next time mom “confuses”
you with “a woman who looks just like you,” you,
too, will be in heaven! Mary and all of the Heider
family

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from
the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where
is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his
star at its rising and have come to do him
homage.” Matthew 2:1-2
AN EPIPHANY HOUSE BLESSING 2020
Every year the Carmelite Pre-novitiate Com-
munity at Carith House in Chicago on the Feast of the
Epiphany blesses their home.
We invite you to adopt this custom in your
family. The family gathers to ask God’s blessing on
their home and on those who live in or visit the home.
It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our
home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our
work and play, our joys and sorrows.
A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk
to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B +
20. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are
the initials of the traditional names of the three magi:
Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate
the Latin ords Christus mansionem benedicat, “May
Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the
cross and 2020 is the year.
Instructions for Blessing the Home
Using chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or
front porch step) as follows:
20 + C + M + B + 20 while saying:
The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and
Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became
human two thousand and eighteen years ago. May
Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout
the new year. Amen..
Then offer the following prayer:
“Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness
of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here
with the gift of your love; and grant that we may
manifest your love to each other and to all whose
lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the
knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and
strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and
forever. Amen”
“Chalking the door” is a way to celebrate
and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and
God’s blessing of our lives and home. With time
the chalk will fade. As it does we let the meaning
of the symbols written sink into the depths of our
heart and be manifest in our words and actions the
Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, “May
Christ bless the house.”
