However some people were of the opinion that the money could have been used for something else. Another concern was that the Resource Consent would expire before the project was completed. The Committee worked closely with Council Officers to ensure the Resource Consent would be extended. While all of this was taking place the committee was also busy filling out funding applications and liaising with the different trusts. The last three months have been the most exciting, frustrating and busiest. We had 80% of the funding required, however other agencies that had pledged money were making noises that if we could not give them a firm start date for construction then they would not honour their pledge. So with the weeks turning into days before some of the funding was due to be pulled it appeared that we could be right back to where we started! We were waiting to hear the outcome of our final funding application – the confirmation came through on Monday 29 June 2009!!! The next day a call was made to Tom Smithers and he confirmed that he would be in Featherston the following week. Emails and phone calls were then made to secure all other funding. I would especially acknowledge the efforts of Marion Williams who had the original vision to start this project, also Stu and Gail Harper for being one of the driving forces in the early days. More recently I would like to thank Councillor Solitaire Robertson for her assistance with the Resource Consent and liaising with Tom Smithers, Edita Babas for her expertise with the Landscape plans and her advice on the placement of the skate park. The Featherston Community Board for backing this project and ensuring its completion takes place. Also to our Mayor Adrienne Staples for her backing of this project and offering us much needed encouragement. I would also extend my thanks to the Council officers who have been involved in this project – being Bill Ewing, Ravi Manger, Sheilagh Noble, Kyra Low and Dr Jack Dowd. A special thanks to the organisations that have funded this project – Eastern and Central Community Trust, Trust House Charitable Trust, Prime Community Trust, South Wairarapa Rotary Club, Featherston Lioness, Matthews Trust, Featherston Community Board, the residents of Featherston and South Wairarapa District Council for the land and assistance they have given this project. I would hope that those who never wanted this facility in town will see what a wonderful asset it is and how much it is enjoyed by our town’s youth and visitors alike. Lastly, I would like to thank those who offered encouragement, who never gave up on the project and to those who always said ‘we can’t wait for the skate park to be built.’ Thanks Featherston!!

Featherston Skate ParkHopefully you all have seen that the much awaitedconstruction of the Skate Park has commenced.

This project has been in the planning for a number of yearsand at times has proven to be highly controversial.

As time was ticking along and the fear that the grant receivedfrom the Lion Foundation was going to be forfeited it wasdecided to build the Gazebo and Pergola. However somepeople were of the opinion that the money could have beenused for something else.

Since then the committee has spent a considerable amountof time looking at various designs, fundraising, meeting withcouncil officers and numerous conversations with SkatePark designers.

Another concern was that the Resource Consent wouldexpire before the project was completed. The Committeeworked closely with Council Officers to ensure theResource Consent would be extended. While all of this was taking place the committee was alsobusy filling out funding applications and liaising with thedifferent trusts. The last three months have been the most exciting, frustratingand busiest. Councillor’s Commentby Councillor Solitaire Robinson

It gives me a huge pleasure to be able to write in this columnthat work on the Skate Park is underway! This has been avery long process over a number of years. Thanks must goto the Featherston Community Board and my fellowCouncillor Dean Davies.

I attended a meeting on Friday where the Greater WellingtonRegional Council did a presentation on car pooling. Thereis a website set up where you can type in your destinationand see who is wanting to car pool or who is offering totake passengers. This could be a great tool for the manycommunters in our town who wish to find more cost effectiveor environmentally friendly ways to get to work. The websiteis www.letscarpool.govt.nz.

What a night…..The official opening of the touring exhibition:Passchendaele- The Belgians have not forgotten, was themost amazing evening. I felt honoured and proud to be aSWDC Councillor and more importantly a resident ofFeatherston.

There were many invited dignitaries including Sophie Hottatattaché from the Belgian embassy in Canberra, RowlandWoods, Honorary Belgian Consul, The Mayor and Mayoressfrom Waimakariri, Major General Rhys Jones, Chief of Armyas well as our local guests. A big thankyou must go to DonStaples and the other members of the Featherston Anzac Clubfor all the work put into this exhibition, all the volunteersmanning the exhibition, Ulli from Gluten Appetit Catering forthe fabulous food at the opening. Last but not lease a hugethankyou to Her Worship the Mayor, without Adrienne’sinvolvement this exhibition would never have come to ourtown. The one theme that kept occurring throughout theevening was the fact that the ANZAC Hall is such anappropriate venue to house this exhibition, to hear this saidby the Chief of Army made all of us swell with pride, as weremembered the important role that Featherston played inWorld War One. I encourage everyone to attend theexhibition; it is on till the 16th of August. As Don Staplesmentioned in his speech on Friday night....Fours hours ofslaughter – a causalty every 4 seconds. A soldier killed every12 seconds. The worst military disaster NZ has everexperienced.…. at Passchendaele. It is so fitting that thisexhibition finds its way to the ANZAC Hall where many ifnot most of these men enjoyed their final hours on NewZealand soil.Lest We Forget

We have beenvery busy with lots of good things going on however this firstcolumn is just to re-introduce us to you.As we do each Winter our regular 1030 Sunday servicesare being held in the cosy heated hall behind the main Churchbuilding. Plenty of familiar hymns andtunes, special story time and activity, followed by a chat anda cuppa, cheerily provided by our own Ianthe. On the fourth Sunday of the month we have the relaxedWorship Service. This is an opportunity for folks to getpersonally involved with the service, reading from the Bible, leading prayers, sharing prose or thoughts and all this followedwith a scrumptious shared lunch. These days a people-mover is available for transport to andfrom the Church services and for special outings, such as theupcoming Quiz Night at Martinborough, thanks to thegenerosity of Pauline Cave and the team at the Turret HouseFamily Works Centre.

At the time of writing this the Featherston Promotional Group& Business Association can announce that the plans for anew toilet in Featherston are underway. Rangitikei DistrictCouncil has allowed us to use their design and currently thisis getting modified for the Featherston site and will be putout for tender in the next few weeks. It will be great to seeour town with flash new toilets, Mr Ravi Manger the Works& Services manager at SWDC has been a huge help, liaisingwith Opus and organizing for the plans to be modified, withoutRavi’s help I am sure the process would have taken muchlonger.

Also in terms of construction going on around the town, weare incredibly pleased to see work start on the skate park,at our last meeting it was noted that without the commitment& hard work from the Featherston Community Board andCouncillors Dean Davies & Solitaire Robertson, this skatepark would not be happening. It is anticipated thatconstruction will be finished in about four weeks, I am surewe all await the grand opening, especially the young peoplein this town.

Some members of the Promotional Group are investigatingthe possibility of having a wireless network set up for theFeatherston main street; this would most certainly encouragemore people to stop in Featherston. To be able to walk intoa café, order a coffee and log on to the internet free of chargewould be great for our town. This system was set up inLawrence a small South Island town and has been verysuccessful.

The Promotional Group has got some more copies of abooklet called “Our Town” printed. This publication wasdone a few years ago, and looks at various aspects ofFeatherston, both positive and negative and suggests wayto progress the town. The Promotional Group membershave been asked to make themselves familiar with this bookletand we are going to see if we can continue working throughsome of the suggestions made in the publication.

That is all from the Promotional Group for this month, pleaseremember our meetings are on the second Monday of eachmonth, 7.30pm at the Fell Museum, feel free to come along.

Update on the FeatherstonCommunity Patrol.

A community patrol is a voluntary group of people givingsome of their time and taking responsibility within their owncommunity to help the Police make their community a saferenvironment in which to live. Community Patrols are notadditions to, or replacements for, the New Zealand Policebut work alongside them as ‘eyes and ears’ to assist in buildingsafer communities.

Patrolling their community in pairs, patrollers note anythingthat could be suspicious and inform police immediately ofincidents requiring urgent attention.

Local patrols are encouraged to affiliate with CommunityPatrols of New Zealand. A condition of affiliation toCommunity Patrols of New Zealand is that the patrol has thesupport and confidence of the Police and has a police liaisonofficer allocated to work with it.

Police notify the patrol of suspicious activities and troublespots they would like the patrol to keep an eye on, as well asinforming the patrol of events occurring in the area. Eachmember must sign a declaration of confidentiality and agreeto abide by a code of conduct before working with the patrol.

Applicants are vetted by the Police before becoming patrolmembers and must complete a period of training where theywork with senior patrollers.

At present the Featherston Community Patrol is at the vettingstage, once this process is complete, we will undertake abrief interview of each candidate to find out things such asavailability, any limitations or preferences. We will then affiliateourselves with CPNZ, issue identification to all members andget the patrol out there at night. We will offer training to themembers at the earliest possible opportunity.

We hope to have the patrol up and running by the end ofSeptember, one thing that may prevent this occurring is theneed for a co-coordinator. This is not an onerous role, however it will require 2 to 3 hours per week and would beideally suited to a community minded person who has theavailable time. If there is anyone out there who would like totake on this role please contact either Porky Sexton or theFeatherston Police.

Walking around the wonderful Passchendaele Exhibition atthe ANZAC Hall the mind was completely stunned at thesacrifice the men that took part had made. The majority of these men were volunteers who believed theywere embarking on a great adventure, a chance to see someother parts of the world, and to do their duty for King andcountry. Little did they know what awaited them and howsmall the odds were of them ever seeing their loved onesagain. The Battle of Passchendaele took place on the morning ofOctober 12, 1917. The New Zealand force fought shoulderto shoulder with their Australian counterparts through galesand driving rain, faced a morass of thick mud and uncutbarbwire up to 13 metres deep, and they died in theirhundreds. The battle itself took just four hours, during this time the NewZealand contingent of 3,296 men suffered a sixty per centcasualty count of which 1.190 were killed. It took two andhalf days to clear the New Zealand wounded from thebattlefield. To put the loss of life at Passchendaele in perspective, therewere more New Zealand deaths on that one day than thetotal loss of life from the combined loss at the Mt Taraweraeruption, the Hawkes Bay earthquake, Tangiwai rail disaster, sinking of the Wahine and the Erebus air crash.By the time the withdrawal took place from the Flandersregion of Belgium in February 1918 the New Zealand divisionhad suffered more than 18,000 casualties – including some5000 deaths. The youth of New Zealand had been decimated with over5% of New Zealand’s total population lost forever on theFields of Flanders.Although many people in New Zealand may have forgottenor have never learnt of the sacrifice these men made, thepeople of Flanders and Belgium have not, and never will. This exhibition created some 90 years after the event is partof the ongoing memory the Belgian people have for thethousands of New Zealanders who gave their lives so thatthe Belgium people could and should live as they do today. During the first week of the exhibition, over 500 people havevisited the sight. This is an outstanding number and must proveto those who were against the exhibition being held inFeatherston, that they were wrong.Objections to this venue are hard to understand, the fact thatif not all, the majority of the men who went to fight in “FlandersField” began their military career in Featherston, and marchedfrom here to their destiny and their place in history. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the year’s condemn At the going down of the Sun And in the morning we will remember them”

Passchendaele.

Sometimes when you reach the dizzy heights your worldsuddenly crumbles. This is exactly what happened to the newly elected VicePresident of the Featherston R.S.A. Ray Simonson.

Said (by himself) to be a good Pool player, he along with hisfriend Ross Harris, challenged two Past Presidents of the clubto a game recently.

Unfortunately for Ross (who was in the toilet at the time) ittook the oldies just one visit to the table each, to clear it. As allpool players are aware this action is known as a “Down Trou”

As the good sports they are the defeated pair offered to dotheir duty, but as a mark of respect (which is in their make up)the victors decided to just shake hands and live off their triumphfor many years to come.…………………………………………………………………

Chairman of the Community Board, Gary Thomas has aproblem. Whilst working at Kahutara School recently hedropped his cell phone, it fell into an area no man would puthis hands. So his request to those working at the sewerageplant, is if you find it please ring me. My new number is 027 04A S**T

The year of a Lions Club runs from July 1 to June 30 so thata couple of weeks ago we had a change of Officers. ThePresident for the year July to June 2010 is Barry Johnsonand our Secretarys Heather Burgess.

Our Club is in its 41st year and we have a membership ofabout 22, mixture of men and women. We meet twice amonth, the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.

The Club is a member of the world wide Lions Organisationand we follow the motto which is very simple “We Serve”.The International Organisation prides itself on being the firstin to offer assistance in any disaster that may befall anywherein the world. We also have an ongoing programme to alleviateblindness in Africa and Asia.

The NZ Lions are helping in the effort to build a new RonaldMcDonald House in Wellington. The purpose of the Houseis to provide accommodation for parents of childrenhospitalised in Wellington.

We are currently collecting the tear off “can tabs” from cansand the screw tops from wine bottles, these are recyclableand the money gained goes towards Kidney Kids. This is aproject that helps children with Kidney or Urinary tractailments.

We do many projects locally where we detect a need or arequest is made.

At our last meeting our guest was an Italian 17 year old boyRiccardo who was being hosted by a member of theGreytown club. He came from Perugia and we enjoyedlearning something about the town.

We sound like terribly earnest people but we do have a lighterside, one of our monthly meetings is Social and we haveSpeakers Quizzes etc.

With the cricket season around the corner, and the Britsthrashing the Aussies, we thought it a good time tolook at what cricket is.

You have two sides one out in the field and one in.Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out and whenhe’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’sout. When they are all out the side that’s out comes in andthe side that’s been in goes out and tries to get thosecoming in out.Sometimes you get players still in and not out. When both sides have been in and out including the notouts, t hat’s the end of the game.

HOWZAT!!.

Cricket.

Recently we have been alerted to the possible danger whenresidents, who have arrived on the late trains, walk fromthe railway station to their homes during this time of theyear.

Lighting on streets such as Johnson, Birdwood and Foxare not the best, and with the weather we have beenexperiencing, people do tend to wrap up warm and weardark winter clothing, which of course is their right, howeverit does put an extra burden on vehicle drivers, especiallywhen pedestrians decide to run across the road with headsdown in a rush to get home out of the weather.

Birdwood Street is probably the worst area, with peopletaking short cuts and on occasions walking down themiddle of the road.

Once the spring and summer arrive this problem will solveitself, but until then we would ask you to be just a littlemore aware that cars do have the right of way on ourroads and they can not stop as quickly as a human. Wewould hate to hear of any of our readers injured through alack of thought or the need to get home quickly. Sometimesspeed can result in the journey taking a lot longer then itshould do.

Wearing an item of illuminated clothing or even to carry atorch would assist in making yourself visible and help toavoid the accident which must inevitably happen one daybut the sure and certain way is to use the footpaths andnever cross the roads at night unless you are sure it is safeto do so.

Please Take Care.

There are over 140 different types of Arthritis andthese can affect people of all ages - from babies and toddlers rightthrough to those in their adult years. Her husband is an emergencyphysician at Masterton Hospital. They are loving the tramping, kayaking and biking fantastic but appreciate most of all thewonderful people they are meeting.

Wellington Guitarists Phil McLaughlin and John Barret were in topform for our July meeting and were much appreciated by a goodcrowd.

Patrick Bleakley and his “Baloney” group gave us a session at the‘Tin Hut” on Sturday 18th, totally unplanned, owing to a cancella-tion of a Gig they had previously been engaged so there was notmuch time for advertising. Word of mouth had a good number ofpeople turn up considering the bledisloe Cup was on at the same. Some of the members were able to turn up to play introductorynumbers (thank you Bob, Mike and The Honky Tonk Heroes) sowhen “Baloney” started up the mood was all go. The bandseemed to enjoy it just as much as the audience and gave us agood two and a half hours of blues and jazz that all were rockingto. This was an opportunity to try out our new lighting system whichwas certainly a great improvement and gives the whole playingarea a real professional look.

Wednesday 5th August should be a great night with club mem-bers playing a good variety of music so come along and listen tothe talent. (Tin Hut 7-30pm non members $5) Coming up preChristmas is “Dave Murphy” top blues man who’s CD DVD “Yesthat’s me” is already turning out to be a top seller so watch thisspace.
