FEATHERSTON MAIN STREETBEAUTIFICATION GROUP

It appears this group that did so much for the town by wayof developments in the main street has dwindled to only twomembers. There are some keen people wanting to re-startthis group; to continue with some previous planned projectsand to listen to new ideas for proposed improvements. If you have an interest in improving the main street ofFeatherston then please make yourself available to attend ameeting Thursday 18 March 7.30pm at the Fell EngineMuseum.

A 98 year old woman actually wrote this letter to her bank. The manager thought it amusing enough to have it publishedin ‘The Times’, and that newspaper thanks him most sincerely.

Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with whichI endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By mycal-culations, three ‘nanoseconds’ must have elapsed betweenhis presenting of the cheque, and the arrival in my account ofthe funds needed to honour it. I refer of course, to theautomatic monthly deposit of my pension, an arrangementwhich I admit, has been in place for only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window ofopportu-nity, and also for debiting my account 30 Pounds byway of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incidenthas caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I no-ticedthat whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls andletters, but When I try to contact you, I am confronted by theimpersonal, overcharging, re recorded, faceless entity whichyour bank has become. From now on, I, like you, chooseonly to deal with a flesh and blood person. My mortgage andloan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer beautomatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressedpersonally and confidentially to an employee at your bankwhom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence underthe Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.

Please find attached an Application Contact Status form which1 require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry itruns to eight pages, but in order that I know as much abouthim or her as your bank knows about me, there is noalterna-tive ... Please note that all copies of his or her medicalhistory must be countersigned by a solicitor, and themandatory details of his/her financial situation [income, debts, assets and liabilities] must be accompanied by documentedproof In due course I will issue your employee with a PINnumber which he/she must quote mi all dealings with me. Iregret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits, but again, Ihave modelled it on the number of button presses required ofme to access my account balance on your phone bankingservice. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form offlattery.

Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me,press buttons as follows

Letter to the bank manager

1--- To make an appointment to see me.2--- To query a missing payment-3--- To transfer the. call to my living room in case I amthere.4 --- To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.5--- To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attendingto the calls of nature.6 --- To transfer the call to my mobile phone in case I amnot at home.7 --- To leave a message on my computer [a password toaccess my computer is required a password will becommunicated to you at a later date for the authorisedcontact]8 --- To return to the main menu and listen to options 1through to 8.9 --- To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contactwill then be put on hold, pending the attention of myautomated answering service. While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the durationof the call.

Regrettably, but again following yourexample, I must also levy anestablishment fee to cover the settingup of this new arrangement. May I wishyou a happy, if so slightly lessprosperous New Year.

Your Humble Client,

DOESN’T SHE MAKE YOU PROUD!!!

Happy New Year all, we hope the kids are happily back atschool/kindy/daycare/baby groups and you are enjoying theroutine again.

We are back in full swing ourselves, with Plunket AppealWeek being held mid-March (15th-21st )and we are lookingfor volunteers to man the buckets at various spots aroundtown or door knock in your neighbourhood. Those happyto help call Tracey 308 6365 or Caroline 308 6988 and wewill sort you out. We even have some very glamorous t-shirts you can wear while collecting!Launching Plunket Week in Wairarapa will be a FashionParade at Ballentynes in Masterton, supported by ANZ.Tickets are limited, and $10 per person, let us know if youwould like to come for this fun night. There will be the Parade, drinks and nibbles and raffles available.

Watch the front of the building, as we will soon have our newPlunket sign up which will make it that little bit easier to findus.Hopefully you have remembered to check out our amazingnew fence on the rear boundary - thanks again for the brilliantand efficient job Neil - well done.

If you have missed an appointment or your child is due a visitwith Kate the Plunket Nurse please ring and leave a message- she will get back to you with a visit time. You don’t need tohave a specific worry or concern, the visits are a great wayof checking a number of health issues and talking aboutdifferent parenting issues. Don’t ever worry that you arewasting her time because you know your child is okay!

Sadly we farewelled one of our favourite Plunket Mums inFebruary. Greer Gwynne fought a valiant fight against cancerand our thoughts and support are with Isabella and Michaelfor their journey ahead without her. She has made a hugeimpact on Featherston in so many ways and the sheer volumeof people at her send off truly reflected that.

Since summer is only really just showing itself now there aresome really important things to think about with your littleones:Plunket and the National Poisons Centre both haveinformation on keeping children safe outside. Some things to keep in mind include:

• Some plants are poisonous and soil can also contain poisons.Teach your child never to put anything from the garden intheir mouth.

• Many garden products and pool chemicals are highlypoisonous, including fertilisers and pesticides. They must bekept out of reach in a high lockable cupboard that cannot bereached by climbing.

• Keep liquids in their original container. NEVER storepoisonous liquids in soft drink bottles.

• Don’t leave sunscreens where children can find them.Always store them out of reach.

• First aid for jellyfish stings includes using sea water towash the area and then soaking the area in warm waterto relieve pain.

• While insect repellents are invaluable to ward offannoying insects, they are not appropriate for childrenunder two years old. Avoid applying to children’shands as they can place them in their mouths or eye.

If you suspect a poisoning or need poisons advice, contactthe National Poisons Centre on 0800 POISON 0800 764766.

Remember we are always keen to hear from Mums, Dads,Grannies, Grampas or anyone with a genuine interest in thePlunket ideals to join our committee or help with projects-give Caroline a call (308 6988) and she will let you knowwhen the next meeting is.

Featherston SchoolNews

Since December last year we have welcomed 14 new pupilsat Featherston School from Upper Hutt, Wellington, Taupo,Masterton and two of the local schools.

It has been a positive start to the year and it is good tofinally see the last of the improvements to the Administration/ Junior Block completed. At one stage we had builders, plumbers, electricians, cleaners and carpet layers all hereat the same time trying to get things completed before thestart of the new year.At the end of term 1 work starts on creating a 21st Centurylearning space in the senior block. We have alreadypurchased 10 Apple Laptops for use by the children andare also looking at a ‘Smart Board’ and other modernteaching tools.

As you will be aware, this year National Standards arebeing introduced into schools. While the politicians playtheir political games we are making the adjustmentsnecessary for their implementation. Because we alreadyuse ‘standards’ at Featherston School which we reportagainst to our Board of Trustees, this implementation shouldoccur without too many problems.

On Monday we were visited by the ‘Books in Homes’Theatre group who performed a fun show about howreading helps us to be able to choose any job we wantwhen we leave school. The children have also receivedtwo books each to take home and keep.

On Thursday we attended the Featherston Cluster SchoolsSwimming Sports. Children are chosen to attend the SWSchools swimming sports.

A warm welcome to families new to Featherston. We hopeyou enjoy your time with us.

The Red Cross forum on changes in this region was wellsupported. Vicky Matthews, Area manager of the WairarapaRed Cross, said plans are under way in the New Zealand RedCross organisation to return regional governance to grassrootslevel. Our members and volunteers in local communities are the heartof New Zealand Red Cross, and in 2010 we are making bigmoves to make sure they have a strong voice in our organization.“We want to tell New Zealanders what is happening, and toask people to think about joining us. We also want NewZealanders to tell us about their communities so we can seehow we can all work together to make a positive difference”she says.Among the programmes being run from the local branch isWairarapa Hospital’s meet and greet service, Meals on Wheelsas well as a transport service for patients attending healthappointments both within and outside the Wairarapa area.Individual towns have volunteers who, in the case ofFeatherston we have a supply of health equipment ie, walkerswheelchairs available, and will help patients who need transportto the medical centre,Should you wish to find out more about the forum or areinterested in joining Red Cross, then please telephone06 377 3586 Masterton, we would love to hear from you.
