Day 1 – Ushuaia, Argentina

Departing from Buenos Aires, fly to Ushuaia and transfer to the port.

Embark Silver Explorer and bid farewell to Tierra del Fuego, the ‘Land at the End

of the World’. This evening you will be introduced to your Expedition Team.

Days 2–3 – Drake Passage

The Drake Passage has a notorious reputation for its turbulent seas where cold

polar water flows northward and warmer equatorial water moves southward.

When they meet, nutrients are pushed to the surface, often attracting a multitude

of seabirds and whales. Have your cameras ready to capture the magical colour

of a midnight sunset. Familiarise yourself with the elegant Silver Explorer and

the welcoming Expedition Team members. Attend wildlife, geography and

historical

discussions hosted by our expert naturalists and guest lecturers that will prepare

you for the exciting adventures that lie ahead.

Days 4–8 – Antarctic Peninsula

While sailing to Antarctica, every turn can be a new and breathtaking adventure.

As the pack ice becomes thicker, it’s apparent to everyone that we are moving

closer into Antarctica’s vast white wilderness of spectacular iceberg sculptures

and calving glaciers, and for the possibility of up-close encounters with marine

mammals. Watch for seals sunbathing on slow-moving ice floes and for

Humpback, Minke, and Orca whales to surface from below the frigid waters.

Each day we will attempt Zodiac departures, and, if conditions permit, we will

cruise amidst colourful icebergs or step ashore visit a variety of penguin

rookeries and perhaps scientific research stations on complimentary excursions

led by our team of natural history experts. A flexible itinerary allows us to take

advantage of favourable ice and weather conditions. Each day the Expedition

Leader and Captain will determine our best course depending on weather, ice

conditions and wildlife we may encounter.

Here are some of the places we may visit:

Aitcho Islands, South Shetland Islands

(just off the Antarctic Peninsula at the entrance to the English Strait)

Penguin breeds living here include Gentoos and Chinstraps. Other annual breeders

include the Southern Giant Petrels. While heading back to the ship, you may have

company as a Leopard or Southern Elephant Seal follows alongside your Zodiac.

Brown Bluff, Tabarin Peninsula (a 2,200-foot-bluff on the Antarctic continent)

Brown Bluff is an ice-capped, 745-metre-high, flat-topped mountain with a

prominent cliff of reddish-brown volcanic rock. You could see Adelie and Gentoo

Penguins, Kelp Gulls, and Pintado Petrels breeding. The all-white Snow Petrel and

Skuas may be seen from a distance. A Weddell Seal may be seen basking in the

sunlight.

Cuverville Island, Errera Channel

The island was discovered by Gerlache’s Belgian Antarctic expedition of 1897–99,

and was named for a vice admiral in the French navy. Large, bare rock areas

provide nesting sites for Gentoo Penguins. Snow Petrels and Pintado Petrels also

may be seen whilst Wilson’s Storm-petrels nest in the higher scree. During Zodiac

tours, hauled-out Weddell and Antarctic Fur Seals may be seen.

Paradise Bay (on the Antarctic Peninsula)

Well named for its spectacular scenery of mountains, glaciers and icebergs. From

the ship, observe Argentina’s Almirante Brown Station, one of many Antarctic

research stations. Set foot on the continent of Antarctica. Cruise in your Zodiac

with one of our experienced Expedition Team members and you’ll possibly come

across a Crabeater Seal relaxing on a nearby ice floe, or if you’re very lucky, your

Zodiac may be surrounded by Minke Whales.

Paulet Island

80-90 thousand Adelie Penguins come here to breed. On a nearby hill, view a

massive colony of Blue-eyed Shags. Kelp Gulls and Snowy Sheathbills also breed

on Paulet Island and Wilson’s Storm-petrels are regularly seen. Otto Nordenskjold

and his party that over-wintered on the island in 1912 and remnants of their hut

still remain. If time permits, take a Zodiac cruise to view impossibly blue

icebergs and Crater Lake.

Petermann Island, Wilhelm Archipelago

First discovered by a German expedition in 1873-74 and named for German

geographer August Petermann, our onboard geologist will take the opportunity

to point out the island’s various geological features. Basaltic dikes along the

shoreline, and the more granite composition of the small summit where rock

surfaces show glacial polish and some glacial grooving. We also will observe

rookeries of penguins and shags.

Pleneau Island, Wilhelm Archipelago

Pleneau Island lies at the south end of the Lemaire Channel, and was first

explored during Charcot’s 1903–05 French Antarctic Expedition. The island was

named for the expedition’s photographer, Paul Pleneau. Common breeding birds

are Gentoo Penguins, Kelp Gulls and South Polar Skuas. Look out for Southern

Elephant Seals hauled out in wallows. Enjoy spectacular glacial and ice scenery.

Port Foster, Whalers Bay (Deception Island)

Deception Island is a collapsed volcano – an excellent example of a ‘caldera’

where the volcano’s summit possibly collapsed with one section sinking far

enough to allow the sea to flood the interior. We plan to sail inside this breached

wall through a narrow entrance called Neptune’s Bellows. Our resident geologist

will explain the unique volcanic features of the area while our historian will

introduce you to the whaling history of Deception Island in the early 1900s.

Port Lockroy, Goudier Island

Built by the British as a listening station for enemy activities during WWII, then

used as a research station in the 1950s, and since 1962 as a museum and gift

shop.

Ukrainian Research Station ‘Vernadsky’ (located on Galindez Island)

We can tour the museum or stop in their lounge for some light shopping, fun and

drinks. Surrounded by icebergs this is perfect for Zodiac cruising and watching

the various wildlife. We may come across one of the world’s top predators, the

Leopard Seal, while navigating through the ice. Gentoo Penguins, Kelp Gulls, Blue-

eyed Shags and Skuas are amongst the birds that breed here. Weddell Seals are

occasionally hauled out and could be seen during a Zodiac cruise.

Days 9–10 – Drake Passage Return

Navigating our return through the Drake Passage, we will watch for seabirds and

wildlife we may have missed on the first trip. Take this opportunity to attend

additional presentations offered by the onboard lecturers and to swap photos

with newfound friends as we journey towards Ushuaia.

Day 11 – Ushuaia, Argentina

After breakfast, disembark the Silver Explorer and transfer to Ushuaia

International Airport for your return flight to Buenos Aires.

STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS

Days 5–6 – Day At Sea

Spend time on deck watching the horizon and the variety of seabirds that glide

in the air currents of our ship’s wake such as the Black-browed Albatross, Sooty

Shearwaters and White-chinned Petrels. Have your cameras ready to capture the

magical colour of a midnight sunset.

Days 7–9 – Exploring South Georgia

This breathtaking destination of towering snow-covered mountains, mighty

glaciers, and low-lying grasslands attracts an astounding concentration of

wildlife: Southern Fur Seals, Southern Elephant Seals, and a variety of albatross

species including Black-browed, Light-mantled Sooty, Grey-headed and the

spectacular Wandering Albatross, plus thousands of King and Macaroni

Penguins. South Georgia is also linked to the early Antarctic explorers. Captain

James Cook first stepped ashore in 1775, but perhaps more famous is Sir Ernest

Shackleton’s arrival in 1916 following the sinking of his ship, the Endurance.

Visit Shackleton’s grave and the whaling museum at Grytviken.

Here are some of the places we may visit:Cooper’s Bay

An unforgettable view of huge icebergs can be seen as we approach. Go ashore

by Zodiac to see numerous breeds of penguins on the rocks and waters

surrounding the island.

Gold Harbour

A large King Penguin colony can be found between Weddell Glacier and Gold

Harbour. Seals can be seen resting on ice floes and sunning on the beaches.

It is an unforgettable experience to cruise by Zodiac between the glaciers.

Grytviken

A historic whaling station now a museum, guests can learn about past whaling

techniques and view exhibits on exploration and discovery. At the famous

explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s grave, we will toast the great explorer’s

accomplishments.

Salisbury Plain

A favourite breeding ground for King Penguins, it is amazing to see how they

completely cover the beaches and hills.

Days 10–11 – Day At Sea

Gather in The Theatre to hear fascinating tales of adventure or to learn about

the regions’s distinctive wildlife and nature. Lectures and seminars are

presented by knowledgeable experts in a variety of scientific fields. Onboard

diversions may include wine tastings, photographic workshops, spa treatments,

a workout in the Fitness Centre, and of course, exquisite dining experiences.

Day 12 – Elephant Island

Awesome glaciers flecked with pink algae greet us as we approach Elephant

Island – so named for its abundance of elephant seals. In 1916 when Ernest

Shackleton’s ship Endurance was crushed in pack ice in the Weddell Sea, the

crew was stranded here for 105 days. Elephant island is home to several

Chinstrap penguin rookeries, as well as 2,000 year old moss colonies. Weddell

Seals and Macaroni Penguins can also be found on the spit of land Shackleton’s

men named ‘Point Wild’.

Days 13–15 – Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula

Beyond imagination lies the last great frontier – Antarctica’s vast white

wilderness. Landscapes formed by the harshest wrath of nature, yet blessed by

an isolated independence. A place unlike anywhere else on earth, where unique

nature and wildlife species exist and, in fact thrive despite the harsh climate.

Witness the dramatic beauty of spectacular iceberg sculptures, marvel at

calving glaciers and experience up-close encounters with marine mammals.

Watch for seals sunbathing on slow-moving ice floes and for Humpback, Minke

and Orca Whales breaching from below the frigid waters. Each day we will

attempt at least two Zodiac departures, and, if conditions permit, visit a variety

of penguin rookeries and scientific research stations.

Days 16–17 – Navigating Drake Passage

Navigating through the Drake Passage, we will watch for seabirds and wildlife

we may have missed on earlier days of the trip. Take this opportunity to attend

additional presentations offered by the onboard lecturers and to swap photos

with newfound friends as we journey towards Ushuaia.

Day 18 – Ushuaia, Argentina

After breakfast, disembark the Silver Explorer and transfer to Ushuaia

International Airport for your return flight to Buenos Aires.

Expedition highlights and wildlife listed here are possible experiences only and cannot

be guaranteed. Your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure

opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account

the prevailing weather, wildlife activity and ice conditions. KING PENGUINS

PeruFrom Salaverry we will visit the Valley of Chicama and the archaeological

complex of El Brujo, the Sorcerer, which dates back to the Mochica culture. We

will next visit a private hacienda. Here, we will enjoy lunch and a performance

featuring the Peruvian Paso Horse and Marinera dance show – an unrivalled

opportunity to immerse ourselves in genuine Peruvian culture and customs.

An abundant array of marine mammals and seabirds surround Isla Lobos and

offer us a splendid opportunity to explore with our Zodiacs. Sea Lions, like

sunbathers, bask on the beach and hundreds of Blue-footed Boobies can

be viewed ashore as well, while Peruvian Pelicans pass overhead. Paita is our

gateway to the great Sechura desert and the San Pedro de Vice wetlands –

an ideal location for bird watching.

EcuadorFrom Guayaquil, we will visit Hacienda El Castillo. This large property covers

over 700 acres, and the land is mainly used for growing cacao, mangoes, and

hardwoods. During our visit, we will walk in the plantation and be able to

appreciate the entire process of creating high-quality chocolate. Further

exploration and discovery await us as we anchor off the coast of the

uninhabited and unspoilt Isla de la Plata, a delightful place for birding,

photography and long nature walks.

Costa RicaIn Costa Rica, we’ll visit Cocos Island, a lush, tropical paradise that seldom

receives visitors as it’s so remote. This large volcanic island offers some of the

world’s best snorkeling and diving experiences. Its fantastical underwater

world features an array of tuna, rays, sharks, dolphins, and many, many more.

In Golfito we have the opportunity to visit a wildlife sanctuary and rescue

centre and we will also go ashore by Zodiac to the small port town of Quepos.

Tranquil turquoise beaches, lush tropical jungles, and a fantastic variety of

flora and fauna can only begin to paint the portrait of this idyllic destination.

Quepos is also our gateway to Costa Rica’s most popular gem, Manuel

Antonio National Park, which is where we begin the day’s exploration.

Go hiking through the rainforest with our informative Costa Rican naturalist

or enjoy a cruise through the mangroves.

PanamaMaking full use of our small, manoeuvrable ship and our Zodiacs, we hope

to land at Isla Coiba, a remote part of Panama. Afoot on an amazing rainforest

adventure, we may be greeted by the roaring sound of howler monkeys.

Our onboard ornithologist will help us to spot some of the 150 known bird

species, including the Bi-coloured Hawk, King Vulture, Coiba Spinetail, Bare-

throated Tiger Herring, Crimson-backed Tangier, and the Scarlet Macaw.

We might even encounter a sea turtle nest or two.

The next day we will visit the Darien Jungle, one of the world’s top ten birding

sites – and most secluded. Fewer than a thousand tourists visit this region

every year. We’ll enjoy the birdlife as we Zodiac cruise up a river to the remote

Mogue Embera village where a festive welcome awaits. Other wildlife we may

see includes Tapir, Black-headed Spider Monkey, and Jaguar.

In Balboa we will begin our exploration of Panama’s three cities visiting

the spectacular ruins of Panama Viejo and the colonial city, Casco Antiguo.

Even by today's standards, the Panama Canal is one of the great man-made

wonders of the world, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Enjoy a

transit of this engineering marvel along with a stunning cache of natural

wonders on either side.

We discover an intact ancient culture thriving in alongside a modern world on

the San Blas Islands; pristine beaches with a mosaic of sea life just off shore;

verdant rainforests filled with a kaleidoscope of wildlife; and adventure and

treasure in every corner. The San Blas Islands, or Kuna Yala Reserve, is home

to the Kuna natives, who are believed to be descendants of the Caribs. Visit

a Kuna community and observe their intriguing lifestyle and gain insight into

their colourful traditions, which are passed from one generation to the next

through dances and chants.

ColombiaWith its fascinating history, old walled city, formidable fortresses and colonial

architecture, Cartagena is considered one of the most captivating ports in the

Caribbean. We will take a tour of the city visiting the military fort, dungeons,

museums, monasteries and markets.

Venezuela An amazing diversity of underwater life awaits in Los Roques – the largest

marine park in the Caribbean. Its coral reefs host incredible underwater fauna

and flora, and its beautiful beaches of white sand and crystalline waters make

it a diving paradise.

Trinidad & TobagoAlso known as Mucura, Port of Spain is the capital and commercial centre of

the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The local population is an astonishing

melting pot of African, Asian, Indian and European, as is the architecture. We

will learn all about the main architectural highlights of Trinidad’s capital city

with the scenic, historical tour.

St Vincent and the GrenadinesOn Bequia, visit the Hawksbill turtle nursery, listen to island legends from

a talented historian/folklorist and spend the rest of the day swimming and

snorkeling from a white sandy beach. Uninhabited and accessible only by water,

the Tobago Cays are recognised as the "jewel in the crown" for marine tourism

in the Southern Grenadines. We will spend the day exploring with our expedition

staff making best use of our onboard Zodiacs, snorkel equipment and kayaks.

Arrecife, Lanzarote, SpainToday we will discover the Lanzarote’s most unusual inhabitant – the dromedaries –

and witness the spectacularly beautiful Montana de Fuego (Fire Mountains) in the

Timanfaya National Park. In the afternoon, we will discover the surprising world of

Cesar Manrique, a celebrated artist, landscape conservationist, and one of Lanzarote's

best-known citizens. At Jardin del Cactus, we find an unusual botanical garden where

many species of cacti have been carefully arranged by Manrique himself, as well as

his former home which is now a museum.

Safi, MoroccoOur destination today is exotic Marrakech. Driving from Safi, we first make

a photo stop at the Koutoubia Mosque. Completed in 1199, it is the tallest mosque in

Marrakech and built in a traditional Almohad style. We next visit the tranquil Majorelle

Gardens, designed by the French artist Louis Majorelle with lush greenery, palm trees,

cacti, still pools and shady nooks. This afternoon, we will take a stroll through the

labyrinth of alleyways in the ancient, 12th-century Medina. Our guided tour ends with

a visit to the famous Djmâa el Fna Square, where we will find a permanent theatre of

musicians, acrobats, snake charmers, food stalls and storytellers.

Lisbon, PortugalLisbon, the Capital of Portugal since the 13th century, is an old city with a

history that mingles legend and fact with fantasy. We will travel through the

main streets and squares of Lisbon to Belém district, where we can view the

Tower of Belém, the Monument of the Discoveries and the 16th-century

Jerónimos Monastery, a fine example of the medieval Manueline architecture.

Leixoes, PortugalIn Leixoes (Oporto), near the mouth of the Duro River, we visit the city centre

(a World Heritage site) and explore narrow streets of bright façades as well as

the 14th century St. Francis Church. Our day in Oporto would not be complete

without a visit to a well known wine cellar to hear about the maturing and

blending of some world-famous port wine.

La Coruna, SpainWe will visit Santiago de Compostela which has attracted Christian pilgrims

from all parts of Europe since the Middle Ages and is now recognised as

a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque

buildings, the Old Town of Santiago exudes an air that is at once ancient,

mystical and lively.

Bordeaux, FranceWe will disembark for a guided tour of the city of Bordeaux, which has recently

been classified as a UNESCO World Heriitage site. We will view the Chartrons

riverfront where the wine trade started, the massive WWII German submarine

base, and the beautiful Grand Theatre, built by Victor Louis in 1773.

Alternatively, visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Saint Emilion. This region

and village is the heartland of the Merlot grape, which produces popular, rich,

round wines.

St. Malo, FranceNear the top of any traveller’s must-see list is a visit to the legendary Mont

Saint Michel – a spectacular granite tidal island, its abbey soaring high above

the sea, situated on the border between Normandy and Brittany, and one of

the first sites to obtain UNESCO World Heritage listing. Upon arrival, we will

observe the natural flora and local fauna before strolling through the narrow

streets of the medieval village up to the Abbey.

Honfleur, France The whole town is virtually an outdoor museum, full of half-timbered houses

and cobbled streets. In the 19th century, Honfleur attracted a steady stream

of Impressionist artists who took their inspiration from the town’s picturesque

setting. Museums, shops, cafés and the famous Old Port add to the attraction

of this lovely city. Our call at Honfleur allows for a visit to Arromanches and

some of the most important locations involved in the historic events of 1944.

The D-Day landings, which took place on the beaches of Normandy, involved

the largest military operation in history.

Dartmouth, EnglandThe idyllic town of Dartmouth has been home to the Royal Navy from its very

earliest days, and a visit to the Britannia Royal Naval College has been

specially arranged for us today. This magnificent building, set in 126 acres of

landscaped gardens, overlooks the River Dart and the sea.

Waterford, IrelandAs we sail up river, we pass Waterford Castle and the ancient city of Waterford,

founded by the Vikings some 1,100 years ago. Learn the history of this

fascinating city as your guide leads you through the narrow winding streets

on a walking tour. In the afternoon, we will drive to Mount Congreve – a

spectacular woodland garden on the banks of the River Suir. This privately

owned 70-acre garden with a four-acre walled garden is particularly stunning

in May when the gardens are awash with magnificent sweeps of flowering

azaleas, camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons.

Iona, Scotland St. Columba came to Iona from Ireland in 563 AD and early Christianity spread

through northern Britain from this remote island community. Forty-eight Kings

of Scotland are buried here, including Duncan, Macbeth’s victim. In the

afternoon, we will visit Iona Abbey, one of Scotland’s most sacred and

historical sites.

Dublin, IrelandDublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and particularly rich in 18th-century

architecture. We will visit the Old Parliament House, which houses the world

famous Book of Kells, a hand illuminated manuscript of the Gospel and then

continue our tour through Georgian squares and past Dublin Castle en route

to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Alternatively, enjoy a full-day tour in the County of

Wicklow, just south of Dublin and known as the ‘Garden of Ireland’ for its

domed granite mountains, deep glens and wooded valleys.

Lunga, Trishnish IslandsThe remote and unsheltered Trishnish archipelago of eight main islands and

many smaller skerries is of volcanic origin and uninhabited by humans, but

the remains of early Vikings and medieval castles tell us that this has not

always the case. The isles are protected not only for their historic culture, but

also

as an important breeding area for Grey Seals and as a conservation area

for Guillemot, Razorbill, Puffin, Kittiwake, Fulmar, Shag, Skua and many

other seabirds.

Stromness, Orkney Islands, ScotlandUpon arriving in Stromness, we will head to west Mainland and into the

Neolithic heartland of Orkney. This area is designated as a World Heritage Site

for its wealth of pre-historic archaeology. We will visit the Ring of Brodgar, a

huge ceremonial circle of stones dating from about 2700 BC and reminiscent

of Stonehenge. We next visit the 5000-year-old excavated village of Skara Brae,

whose remarkable dwellings were buried under sand and perfectly preserved

until 1850 when they were revealed during a huge storm.

Lerwick, Shetland, ScotlandCharming sandstone buildings line the waterfront of this historic seaport.

Lerwick, the northernmost town in Scotland, reflects its proximity to Norway

with a delightful blend of Scottish and Scandinavian cultures. Our morning

excursion travels through picturesque landscapes and includes visits to

Scalloway Castle, built in 1600; the Scalloway Museum, with displays that

depict the village’s unique role in World War II; and Gott Ponies to see the

famed Shetland ponies.

Noss, Shetland, ScotlandIn the afternoon, the Silver Explorer will depart Lerwick to cruise and

explore the Shetland Islands. Exploring the isle of Noss via the Zodiacs, your

Expedition staff will point out Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots, Shags, Kittiwakes,

Razorbills, Fulmars and Great Skuas. Recognised as a National Nature Reserve

since 1955, the Isle of Noss has one of Europe’s largest and most diverse

seabird colonies. Perhaps we will even catch sight of the elusive otters that

frolic in the surrounding waters.

Cruise & Explore the Faroe IslandsA birdwatcher’s paradise, the Faroe Islands are an ideal breeding ground for

a multitude of both common and rare birds. Guillemots can be seen soaring

above the sea cliffs and standing with their backs to the sea, protecting their

single egg. Kittiwake nest on the flat outcroppings, and Puffins gather in the

grassy hillside ledges. Small flocks of Gannets may be seen diving for food.

Sightings of Grey Seals are common in the Faroese fjords, and if we are lucky,

we may also spot Short-finned Pilot Whales or even Orcas.

Höfn, IcelandIceland is a place of magnificent and incredibly diverse landscapes. Our

explorations in this remote world region begin with a drive from Höfn to the

glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón, located by Europe’s largest glacier: Vatnajökull. The

glacial lake is filled with icebergs and specially designed boats will take

us right up close – an incredible experience! Take in the unforgettably scenic

surroundings and have an opportunity to touch the ice that has broken off

Breiðamerkurjökull, one of Vatnajökull’s many glacier outlets.

Vestmannaeyjar Island, Iceland Vestmannaeyjar, or the Westman Islands, has only one inhabitated island,

Heimaey. We make our first stop at “Sprangan”, a cliff where young islanders

are taught the local sport of rope swinging. The sport has evolved from the

islanders’ age-old tradition of egg-collecting and to this day local men hop

expertly from ledge to ledge, collecting eggs while attached to a lifeline held

by an anchor man at the top of the cliff. We then proceed to the island’s

famous volcanoes: the youngest of the group is “Surtsey”, having been

born in the volcanic eruption of 1973.

Runde Island, NorwayRenowned for its extraordinary quantity of birdlife, Runde Island’s cliffs are

a sanctuary for thousands of Puffins, Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Fulmars,

Razorbills, Gannets and Shags. If we are lucky, we may even spot a Great Skua

or White-tailed Eagle. While there are only about 100 human inhabitants on

the island, there are 70 different species of nesting birds with 240 species

observed. In addition to birdlife, our naturalists will also help us to spot the

many varieties of plants found on the island.

Ålesund, NorwayThe coastal town of Ålesund is noted for its characteristic Jugendstil (Art

Nouveau) buildings, making it one of the most picturesque towns in Norway.

Narrow streets are crammed with buildings topped with turrets, spires and

gables that bear decorations of dragonheads and curlicues.

Bergen, NorwayNestled among seven scenic hills, Bergen, with its gabled houses, is one of

Norway's most beautiful cities. Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a

reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading

empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century, and a UNESCO World Cultural

Heritage Site.

Invergordon, ScotlandThrough delightful Highland scenery we will travel to Dunrobin Castle, with

its 15th-century keep, 17th-century courtyard and exceptional formal gardens

overlooking the sea. Our outing takes us next to Tain and the world-renowned

Glenmorangie distillery. We will tour the distillery and enjoy a whisky tasting.

Alternatively, choose to instead head south to Loch Ness for a chance to

glimpse the infamous Loch Ness Monster!

Portree, Isle of Skye, ScotlandAfter coming ashore in the charming Portree, we will drive across the lovely

Isle of Skye to its west coast and the castle of Dunvegan which houses some

priceless heirlooms. In the afternoon, join a local guide for a walking tour of

historic Portree – a bustling fishing town with pretty painted buildings

huddled around a charming harbour.

Belfast, Northern IrelandFirst we stop to photograph Dunluce Castle. Perched picturesquely (and

precipitously!) at the edge of a rocky outcropping high above the sea, the

castle is dramatically surrounded by terrifyingly steep drops. Our next

destination is the Giant’s Causeway of 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns that

descend in a kind of pathway to the sea. Formed over 50 million years ago,

UNESCO has recognised this unique site with World Heritage status. We will

then drive along the spectacular and unspoilt Antrim Coast to the Carrick-a-

rede Rope Bridge or alternatively, choose instead to visit the National Trust

Arctic Expeditions voyage highlights

WALRUSES

ARCTIC ICEBERG

Exploring the Svalbard Archipelago

As we sail on our journey along an expansive archipelago of the Arctic Ocean

between the North Pole and Norway, Svalbard is one of the last major

European wilderness areas with pristine mountains, fauna, deep fjords,

picturesque icebergs and massive ice sheets. Our goal is to explore the eastern

and least-visited sections of Svalbard’s breathtaking and dramatic Spitsbergen

Archipelago. Spitsbergen is home to approximately 5,000 Polar Bears. Our

flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of favourable ice and weather

conditions and we will trek along beaches blanketed in Walruses, get to know

the indigenous Reindeer, and maybe even spot the Arctic Fox or Bearded Seal.

Seabirds such as Ivory Gulls, Auks and Puffins will be our constant

companions. We may even encounter a few whales, most likely Minke and

Beluga out of a variety of known species.

NorwayApproaching Bear Island, whale watching is a priority. They are in record

numbers in this area. As we move closer to this arctic island, we witness a

kaleidoscope of thousands of sea birds diving into and out of the island’s steep

cliffs. With our Zodiacs, we explore the rugged coastline of Bear Island, and if

weather conditions are favourable, make a landing. In Tromsø, we will visit

The Polar Museum which will allow us to view exhibitions that feature hunting

and trapping in the Polar regions, and the famous Norwegian Polar explorers

Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen. We will then visit the Arctic Alpine

Garden – the world’s northernmost botanic garden. What makes the Arctic

Alpine Garden remarkable is its ability to sustain delicate alpine plant life

under the cold, stressful, and insular conditions of this region. From Skårsvag,

adventurous guests can join members of the Expedition Team for a

challenging hike to Nordkapp, retracing the traditional route to the cape up a

winding path. Or for those who prefer to arrive in comfort, the Silver Explorer

will anchor off the shore of Skårsvag, the “most northerly fishing village in the

world”, and weather conditions permitting, head ashore by Zodiac. The

panorama is unforgettable. On our return journey to the ship, watch for

Reindeer grazing on the surrounding hillsides.

RussiaWe will visit Solovetsky, a rarely visited archipelago of six islands that has

been inhabited since the 5th century BC. During our two day exploration of

Novaya Zemlya we plan to visit a number of historic expedition locations and

our onboard lecture topics will touch on the history and culture of the

indigenous Nenetses, and describe the Novaya Zemlya Effect – a phenomenon

that occurs only in the cold extreme north winter and makes the sun appear

rectangular rather than circular. Remote Franz Josef Land is a place of extreme

extremes. It is Russia’s northern-most territory, the most northerly island chain

in Eurasia, the last major land mass on earth to be discovered (in 1873) and

the closest land to the North Pole in the Eastern Hemisphere. Our four day visit

to this unpopulated, largely unexplored destination is among only a handful of

visits this region at the top of the world receives each year. It is reported that

the rare arrival of a cruise ship often intrigues the native polar bears’ natural

curiosity and they are known to approach visiting ships quite closely, so we

are hoping to experience some amazing sightings. We will embark on daily

explorations of these rugged shores, never quite able to get enough of the

fascinating landscapes of mountains and glaciers and scenes of wild,

untouched nature. Sometimes called “Moon Archipelago” much of the terrain of

Franz Joseph Land is otherworldly. And the entire time we will feel incredibly

fortunate to witness these seldom-seen vistas during the magical white nights

of an arctic summer.

Destinations we may explore during our four days

in Franz Joseph Land include:

Alger Island / Ostrov AldzherHistorically, this island was the wintering site of the 1901 American expedition

led by Baldwin. Today, visitors consist primarily of the king of the Arctic –

the Polar Bear.

Bell Island The house built by the Lee Smith expedition of 1881 is the highlight of our

visit to this destination.

Champ Island / Ostrov Champ / Cape TriestCentrally located in Franz Joseph Land, Champ Island is home to majestic,

ice-capped mountains – the highest of the archipelago. But even more

fascinating are the island’s mysterious spherical boulders. Of all 191 islands,

this natural phenomenon of round stone geodes is unique to Champ Island

and only comparable to one other world location in New Zealand.

Graham Bell Island / Ostrov Greem-BellNamed after inventor Alexander Graham Bell, this island is home to a Cold War

outpost and to a large airfield used regularly by cargo and fighter aircraft since

the 1950s.

Hall Island / Ostrov Gallya / Cape TegetthoffThe first of the Franz Josef Islands to be discovered (in 1873), Hall Island

is easily recognized by the massive cliffs and spires that protrude from the

surrounding sea. Our onboard historians will regale us with tales of the

Wellman expedition (1898-1899) as we view the remains of wooden structures

from their rustic campsite.

Hooker Island / Ostrov Gukera / Tikhaya BayIt will be difficult to contain the excitement of our Expedition Team’s

ornithologist and fellow birders as we approach Tikhava Bay and the enormous

Rubini Rock. The many crevices in this massive cliff provide shelter for large

colonies of Arctic seabirds including Kittiwakes, Guillemots and Skuas. Weather

permitting, we will make a Zodiac landing to visit the abandoned Sedova

Station on shore – the first polar station of Franz Josef Land.

Jackson Island / Ostrov Dzheksona / Cape Norway After a failed attempt to reach the North Pole in 1896, Norwegian explorers

Nansen and Johansen survived eight bleak winter months in a cave built of

stone and moss on this island.

Northbrook Island / Ostrov Nortbruk / Cape Flora On this historic island, we can see various remains and learn about the famous

Lee Smith expedition of 1880 and Jackson expedition of 1894-1897.

WEST AFRICA ADVENTURE 10, 16 or 18 Day Expeditions from September to October 2012

SUNSET IN AFRICA

WHITE FRONTED BEE-EATER, SENEGAL

West African voyage highlights

Dakar, SenegalGoree is a small island just off the coast of Dakar, Senegal's sprawling capital

city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven of tranquility, there are no

cars on the island making it easy to walk around and explore. The main

attraction is the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) built by the Dutch

in 1776 as a holding point for slaves. The house has been converted into

a museum. Tour through the dungeons where the slaves were held and hear

how they were sold and shipped.

Banjul, The GambiaOrnithologists all over the world consider The Gambia to be a birdwatchers’

paradise where over 500 species can be seen. We will offer an excursion

to The Abuko Nature Reserve for a forest walk where birds, monkeys and

crocodiles live. At the Reserve’s zoo we can also see lions, hyenas, reptiles,

antelopes, bush ducks and Crowned Cranes. Alternatively, visit the Makasutu

cultural forest situated on the banks of a beautiful meandering tributary of

the River Gambia, and encompassing many different ecosystems including

dense forest, savannah and mangrove regions.

Banana Island, Sierra LeoneThe Banana Islands in reality comprise of two main islands, Dublin Island and

Ricketts Island, linked by a causeway. Ricketts has some great forest areas to

explore, while Dublin Island boasts beautiful beaches. Banana Island with its

900 inhabitants also offers the relics of Sierra Leone’s role in the slave trade.

We will explore this historic island on foot and go in search of the numerous

fruit trees – mangoes, bananas, papaya, citrus fruits, coconuts and starfruit.

We hope to see some wildlife too including reptiles, birds and grey long-tailed

monkeys who fish for crab with their tails!

Takoradi, GhanaFrom Takoradi, we will drive to Elmina Village and tour Elmina Castle, which

was built in 1482 and is said to be the oldest European-built structure outside

of Europe. Between the picturesque old town alleys and the numerous flat-

bottomed pirogue boats in the harbour, we enjoy one of West Africa’s greatest

photo opportunities. We will also have the opportunity to visit Cape Coast

Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the Kakum National Park comprising

undisturbed virgin rainforest.

São Tomé and PríncipeIn São Tomé, palm fringed beaches, crystal clear water and barely explored

jungles are surely the reason for the pervasive national mood that translates

to ‘slowly slowly’ and loosely translates to ‘it’s all good, take it easy’.

Expedition Highlights:● Tour dungeons and view the relics of the slave trade● Observe a paradise of exotic birdlife and unique African fauna ● Swim in crystal clear water and enjoy cultural forest walks ● See monkeys, giant frogs and learn about plant usage.● Savour some of the world’s best coffee and watch it processed● Visit a village built on stilts, the Sacred Forest and Voodoo Country● Explore settlements wedged between the Namib desert and wild Atlantic seaboard

and watch a great variety of birdlife including Pelicans, Flamingos, waders and the

endangered Damara Tern.● Visit the Cape Peninsula where two oceans meet ● Spot seals, Jackass Penguins, endangered plant and animal species● Taste delicious local wines passing quaint Cape Dutch

architecture on a Winelands Tour

AFRICAN ELEPHANTS

The Portuguese-Creole flavour and unspoilt beauty of this tropical paradise is

ours to savour. Some of the world’s best coffee is produced on the island, and

during our full-day tour we will experience coffee culture at São Tomé's

highest plantation estate and learn how coffee is still processed in the

traditional manner. The tropical island of Príncipe is a place where one can

explore deserted beaches, discover dense rainforests teeming with exotic

birds, and where crystal-clear waterfalls cascade into the azure blue ocean.

Cotonou, BeninCotonou is referred to by many as the ‘Latin Quarter of Africa’. We will head

out on tour to Voodoo Country and Ouidah, a town typically and profoundly

African. We will visit the Sacred Forest and walk through majestic coconut

groves. Sculptures, including the Tree of Forgetfulness, serve as reminders

of the slaves’ plight. We will travel to Lake Nokoue where we will board small

motorboats to visit a fishing village built on stilts. Ganvié village is made up

of bamboo houses resting on teak stilts, perched above the water. We will have

the chance to see the floating market and boatloads of chattering children

heading to and from school.

Lome, TogoWe head out to explore the lush Plateaux Region north of Lome, Kpalime.

Here we will meet a local etymologist and his team for an educational walk in

the Kloto Forest, during which we will identify many of the endemic birds and

butterflies and learn about the local usage of plants. During lunch in the

forest, our friends from Kouma Village will introduce us to the local Ewa

culture with a performance of traditional song and dance. We will also visit

local artisans and a traditional bush school in the area.

Bata, Equatorial GuineaBata lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Rio Muni and has a population of

around 70,000 today and offers some very attractive colonial architecture.

During our time here, we will visit the Monte Alen National Park and discover

exceptional rainforest scenery. There is abundant fauna with opportunities

to see monkeys, giant frogs and many bird and butterfly species as well as

maybe catching a glimpse of forest elephant and an opportunity to hike deep

into the forest in search of Gorillas.

Walvis Bay, NamibiaIn Walvis Bay we will explore the coastal dune belt by 4WD’s, once home to

the Topnaar people. We will see a great variety of birdlife including Pelicans,

Flamingos, waders and the endangered Damara Tern at the lagoon, and pass

salt works of amazing colours en route to the dry Kuiseb River and go in

search of Topnaar settlements. The small town of Lüderitz is wedged between

the Namib Desert dunes and the wild Atlantic seaboard. Following an early

lunch onboard, we will visit the abandoned diamond-mining town of

Kolmanskop.

Cape Town, South AfricaFor our full day in Cape Town, we have planned two excursions. The first is an

exploration of Cape Point/Peninsula, including a visit to Seal Island at Hout Bay

and Boulders Beach, where the African (or Jackass) Penguin is a common sight.

From there we will travel to the Cape Nature Reserve, a sanctuary for

endangered plant and animal species, and enjoy lunch at Two Oceans, the

meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Your second option is a full-

day Cape Winelands tour, driving through lovely countryside and admiring

quaint Cape Dutch architecture. We will visit Stellenbosch and taste delicious

local wines at three estates, our final stop including lunch.
