VALENTINE’S DAY MEMORIES

By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

Hearts and flowers, chocolate and jewelry, romantic dinners and cards with loving prose! Valentine’s Day is a day for celebrating love; for engagements; for weddings; for sharing a romantic dinner. It’s a day of gifts of cards, candy, flowers and jewelry.

As Allan and I get older and settled into a hppy marriage, Valentine’s Day is more of a regular day rather than a roman-tic holiday. Not that we don’t sometimes remember to share cards and chocolate, but there is less pressure to celebrate with expensive gifts and dinners. It is always a good day, however, for remembering to say “I love you” and “you are special” – gifts of the heart that don’t come with a price tag.

The hardest Valentine’s Days for me came when I was in elementary school. It was a tradition for students to bring a decorated box that other students could put valentines into. There was so much self-imposed pressure to create a beauti-ful box to bring to school for that special day. Some of my classmates were incred-ibly creative. There would be boxes with lace and hearts, beautifully hand made. I remember one box that had a beautifully gowned doll on top. My boxes were usu-ally a crepe paper shoe box disaster. Okay, maybe not a disaster, but they certainly didn’t compare to the ones at the top of the creative curve. Being a competitive person even then, I wanted mine to be as good as those of students with the artistic gene. Alas, it wasn’t to be. In later years, when Peter and Katie needed to create boxes for their student Valentines, I was still non-cre-ative. Fortunately, they have a better artis-tic bent than their mother and could create pretty boxes on their own.

But, even with the stress of box cre-ation, Valentine’s Day was a fun time back at North Avenue Elementary School in Hapeville. We would bring in our val-entines and put them into the boxes of the other students. I kept some of mine for a long time. Actually, if I am honest, one year’s may still be in the basement

somewhere. My favorite was a larger than normal one that was signed “guess who”. As an extremely shy child, who was even shyer around boys, I liked to imagine that I had a secret admirer somewhere in the class. I never found out who sent it, but it was a nice boast to my self-esteem back in an era when we didn’t know that self-esteem was something we were supposed to be concerned about.

Hearts and flowers and romantic moments! I hope Valentine’s Day 2012 will be a very special day for everyone who has a special someone, whether it is a new love or one of many years.

Every aspect of the design needs to be 100 percent edible which really makes the competition a test of culinary skill and creativity.

“Since it has to be edible you have to think outside of the box. Gingerbread doesn’t have to be a house! Whimsy is key,” said Mrs. Lewis who is excited to work on new techniques, attend more classes, and is already planning her design for next year.

WHITEFIELD CHESS TEAM TAKES SECOND IN

MLK TOURNAMENTThe Whitefield Academy K-5 Chess

Team recently took second place in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Chess Tournament. Fourteen Lower School students competed in the tournament, one of the most competitive scholastic tourna-ments held in Georgia. Eight students made up the K-5 team, which took second place with a total of 14 points. Fifth-grader Zach-ary Justice led the team with four points. Entering the final round undefeated and playing for the championship, Justice lost a close match but finished in third place overall in individual competition.

With three points each, fifth-grader Caleb Corliss and second-grader Zoe Jus-tice had strong showings as well. Fifth-graders Kameron Hughes, Connor Miller, Laura Scheidegger, and Everett Sinclair, along with fourth-grader Cole Peterson, rounded out the K-5 team.

A younger and less experienced K-

3 team also competed well, finishing in seventh place overall. Third-grader Jack Krahel led the team with three points, fol-lowed by kindergartner Drew Justice with two and a half points, and third-grader Joel McKinney with two points. Second-grad-ers Riley Keeble, Mary Linley Marshall, and Luke Sinclair also contributed to the team’s solid finish. The teams will go on to regional competition in February.
