Black History Month began as "Negro History Week," which

was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African

American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a

month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was

chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and

Abraham Lincoln.

On February 12, 2009, the NAACP marked its 100th anniversary.

Spurred by growing racial violence in the early twentieth century, and

particularly by race riots in Springfield Illinois in 1908, a group of African

American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights

organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored

People (NAACP). February 12, 1909 was chosen because it was the

centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

Jack Johnson became the first African-American man to hold the

World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in 1908. He held on to the belt

until 1915.

John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer in

Ohio when he passed the Bar in 1854. When he was elected to the post of

Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio in 1855 Langston became one of the

first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. John

Mercer Langston was also the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, famed

poet of the Harlem Renaissance.

The boys varsity basketball team won their homecoming game against Sabinal 67-56 last Friday. The team was led by Trevon Ruffin and Mikel Corpening with 19 points each. Gerardo Salgado also helped the cause with 15 points! It was a great defensive effort by the team. The boys JV team also won their homecoming

game against Sabinal by a score of 47-43! The team was led by Chad McKnight with 21 points and Nicholas White helped with 10 points! Good job Eagles! This past Tuesday, January 31 the varsity boys team also

won at Charlotte 68-33! Once again. Mikel Corpening was a leading scorer knocking down four 3-pointers and totalling 15 points! Seniors Tony Roach and Gerardo Salgado pitched in 12 and 11 points respectively!

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I

married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten

years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary

school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early

Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr

old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I

look forward to an exciting school year.

DLI* (Defense Language Institute) Presentation at the Gateway Club

The fourth and sixth grade classes from Lackland Elementary attended the DLI Cultural

Fair at the Gateway Club on Wednesday, February 1. The DLI students created

multimedia presentations to share with the Lackland community. Students had the

opportunity to speak with the foreign students and learn how to write their names in

different languages. The teachers and students would like to thank the Defense

Language Institute for making the window to our world a little bit bigger so we can

appreciate and experience world cultures.The world is round so friendship can encircle it.

Yearbooks on sale in the elementary office for $22.00 Your child must have a yearbook to attend the end of the year signing party.

Also, you may submit a “Love Line” to your child to be printed in the yearbook.

Forms went home this week, or pick one up in the front office.

Quick…they are selling out!

This week the 6th graders explored Speed. They

timed each other walking 100 meters. They then

calculated their speed. This is just one of our activities

in our force and motion science unit.

Ms. Kay’s second grade class went to The San Antonio Museum of Art on Friday, January 27th to view the Jade exhibit. They saw many figurines of animals, people,

and places in Asia. There were even a few from Central America. A video of how Jade is carved and shaped to make the figurines was shown to the students as well. Then

students were able to create their own Jade dragon masks inspired by several

figurines they viewed. Ms. Bella read "Jade Stone", a story of an ancient Chinese artist who was inspired to carve Jade based on what he could "hear" in the

stone.

The time has come to say goodbye to one of our favorite teachers here at Lackland ISD ! Ms. Judy Nelms has retired after 23 years of

faithful service in our district! Over the course of her many years here at Lackland, Ms. Nelms has taught grades three through sixth and all the

subjects! Her favorite subject is reading (being that she is a reading specialist!) and has always had a knack for teaching kids to read better and

enjoy it more! Of course, anyone who knows Ms. Nelms knows that she is really an alien

(Yep, she was born in Roswell when all those UFO stories started!) who has become a favorite teacher for many of the human children she has taught over all these years at Lackland Elementary. There are so many children

whose lives she has touched in such positive ways! Ms. Nelms~~or should we say Dr. Nelms!~~There are many, many folks here

who will miss you and your terrific smile and laugh and teaching talent! Enjoy the relaxing years ahead, but never forget that for 23 years, you

touched so many of us here at Lackland!

HELP FOR MILITARY KIDS The Department of Defense (DoD) launched a new website for

children/teens experiencing the challenges of military deployments.

The highly interactive website, www.MilitaryKidsConnect.orgg -

http://www.militarykidsconnect.org. was created by psychologists at DoD's National Center for Telehealth and Technology. It

helps children/teens of deployed parents cope with the stress, changing responsibilities, and concern for the safety of their parents. The center,

known as T2, developed the website with informative videos, educational

tools, and engaging games and activities for three age groups: 6 to 8; 9 to 12; and 13 to 17. The site features monitored online social network

forums for the groups to safely share their experiences with deployments.

MilitaryKidsConnect.org is the first DoD website to connect children in the widely separated, active, reserve, and National Guard military

communities. "Since 2001, an estimated 2 million children have said

goodbye to a parent headed to deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, other places around the globe, and on ships at sea," explained Kelly Blasko,

a T2 psychologist. "Military children are deeply affected by the separation of their parent's deployment. We've seen that in their hearts,

kids deploy too."

The website has features that will help children, parents and educators

navigate the wide range of practical and emotional challenges military families must live with throughout the deployment cycle.

The National Center for Telehealth and Technology serves as the primary DoD office for cutting-edge approaches in applying technology to

psychological health.
