    Paint the Town organ-

    izers are taking steps to

    restore several homes

with a fresh coat ofpaint while building a

    stronger sense of com-

    munity. Created by for-

    mer DASH board

    member, Frank Cox,

    the event brings busi-

    ness, homeowners,

    faith groups and neigh-

    bors together to revital-

    ize homes and restore

pride in the communi-ty. Every year the

    brightness of each

    newly painted home is

    accomplished by the

    handiwork of local citi-

    zens and residents

    working together.

    Paint the Town is look-

    ing for potential home-

    owners, teams and sup-

porters to participate inthe 2016 event sched-

    uled for May 31th

    June 3rd The project

    implemented by DASH

    for LaGrange, Inc. was

    born out of the realiza-

    tion that maintaining a

home is a great way to

    build community and

    restore pride in neigh-

    borhoods of LaGrange-Troup County.

    Homeowners must own

the home in the City of

    LaGrange and have a

    household income

    below $41,500 for a

    family of four. Paint

    the Town does not

    paint rentals or sub-

    leases.

The event offers sever-al different opportuni-

    ties for business and

    organizations interested

    in partnering with Paint

    the Town through

    active volunteerism, to

    create a healthier more

    stable environment

    where families can

    thrive. Volunteering is

    a fun way to boost

    company moral and

    strengthen relationshipoutside of the office.

    Each of our homeown-

    ers has incredible sto-

    ries of how they served

Christs CornerPsalm 77:1 I cried unto God

with my voice, even unto God

with my voice; and he gave ear

    unto me.

The LORD does hear our cry

of need. Yes! Tears are a lan-

    guage God understands.

Many of us think we are

    strong enough for any situa-

tion. We think we can take

care of our selves and our

    loved ones. Some may even

    think they are good enough,

    that, they don't need help

    from anyone.

    But, dear Christian friends,

there will come a time whenwe reach our limits. We will

    realize our weakness. We

then find out we can't even

    help our self especially any-

    one else.

It's at the time of deep

despair that we turn to God

and cry out for help. Our

LORD can, and, will give us

    help, hope, and healing for

    our souls.

The last part of this verse got

    my attention and he gave

    ear unto me. WOW! YES!

The GOD of all does listen to

    his children's cry for help.

    Our heavenly father cares

    and is concerned about us.

    Jesus, our savior, has sent

    back the Comforter to minis-

ter unto us! It's the Holy

    Spirit that empowers,

    embolden, and, leads us gen-

tly in our path of life.

Be still and know GOD is

real. Then you will hear the

    Holy Spirit speak to you

    heart.

Tips For Finding A ScholarshipCollege is expensive, and

    while families should focus

on saving what they can, stu-

    dents should not forget to

apply to the wealth of schol-

    arships available nationwide.

    Millions of scholarships,

    worth billions of dollars are

    awarded annually. Beyond in-

    house scholarships offered by

    the institutions themselves, a

    number of federations and

    organizations offer money to

    students with particular apti-

    tudes, achievements and aspi-

    rations.

    Scholarships can make a sig-

    nificant dent in out-of-pocket

    college spending, but finding

    and applying for them

    requires an up-front invest-

    ment of effort, says Martha

    Holler, senior vice president,

    Sallie Mae.

    The college financing experts

    at Sallie Mae are offering

    scholarship application tips:

    Applying is worth the time

and effort. Even if the award

is small, take the time to

    apply to every scholarship for

which you are eligible. It is

money that doesnt have to be

paid back, and it can be used

    for textbooks, supplies or

    other college-related expens-

    es.

    Deadlines and details mat-

    ter. In the highly competitive

    scholarship arena, missing a

    deadline or overlooking

    application requirements will

    likely disqualify an applicant.

    Stay organized with a spread-

    sheet that includes due dates

    and other important informa-tion.

    Apply each year.

    Approximately half of avail-

    able scholarships are for stu-

    dents already enrolled in col-

lege. Take the time to apply

    annually to ease the year-to-

    year tuition burden.

    Impress the judges.

    Something seemingly as

small as a thank you note can

    have a disproportionately

large effect on how an appli-

    cation is regarded. Be courte-

    ous and thoughtful through-

    out the process.

    Shop around. Go deep.

    There are scholarships for

    students who want to study

    subjects as diverse as candy

    making, potato growing and

    welding technology.

    Additionally, scholarships are

    available for particular cir-

    cumstances, such as commu-

    nity college students transfer-

    ring to four-year institutions,

or students who are the first

in their family to attend col-

    lege.

Dont spend. The goal is to

    save money, not spend it.

    Guidance counselors and

    school financial aid offices

    can recommend free, rep-

    utable scholarship search

    sites, such as Scholarship

    Search by Sallie Mae, which

    just added two million schol-

    arships to its database, offer-

ing access to more than five

    million scholarships worth

    nearly $24 billion.Continued On Pg. 18

I put my carry-on in the

    luggage compartment and

    sat down in my assigned

seat. It was going to be a

long flight. 'I'm glad I have

    a good book to read.

    Perhaps I

will get a short nap,' I

    thought.

    Just before take-off, a line

    of soldiers came down the

    aisle and filled all the

    vacant seats, totally sur-

    rounding me. I decided to

    start a conversation.

"Where areyou headed?" I asked the

    soldier seated nearest to me.

    "Great Lakes Air Base.

    We'll be there for two

    weeks for special training,

    and then we're being

    deployed to Iraq," he

    answered.

    After flying for about an

    hour, an announcement was

    made that sack lunches

    were available for five dol-

    lars. It would be several

    hours before we reached

    Chicago, and I quickly

decided a lunch would helppass the time.

As I reached for my wallet,

    I overheard the soldier ask

his buddy if he planned to

    buy lunch. "No, that seems

like a lot of money for just

    a sack lunch. Probably

    wouldn't be worth five

bucks. I'll wait till we get

    to Chicago."

    His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other

    soldiers. None were buying

lunch. I walked to the back

of the plane and handed the

flight attendant a fifty dollarbill. "Take a lunch to all

    those soldiers." She

    grabbed my arms and

    squeezed tightly. Her eyes

    wet with tears, she thanked

me. "My son was a soldier

    in Iraq... it's almost

like you are doing it for

    him."

    Picking up ten sacks, she

headed up the aisle to where

    the soldiers were seated.

She stopped at my seat and

    asked, "Which do you like

    best - beef or chicken?"

    "Chicken," I replied, won-

    dering why she asked.

She turned and went to the

    front of plane, returning a

    minute later with a dinner

    plate from first class. "This

    is your thanks."

    After we finished eating, I

went again to the back of

    the plane, heading for the

    rest room. A man stopped

    me.

"I saw what you did. I want

to be part of it. Here, take

    this." He handed me twen-

    ty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my

    seat, I saw the Flight

    Captain coming down the

    aisle, looking at the aisle

    numbers as he walked, I

    hoped he was not looking

for me, but noticed he was

    looking at the numbers only

on my side of the plane.

When he got to my row he

    stopped, smiled, held out

his hand, and said, "I want

    to shake your hand."

    Quickly unfastening my

seat belt I stood and took

    the Captain's hand.

    Celebrating a new baby is

    both exciting and busy.

    However, setting up the

    house and buying new

    baby items can be expen-sive.

    Whether you are expect-

ing a little one, or are

    shopping for someone

    else who is, simple

    money-saving ideas from

    the discount experts at

    Dollar General can help

    give you peace of mind

that everything is readyfor the arrival.

    Get Back to Basics

    Stock up on the essentials

    before babys arrival.

    Items like diapers, wipes,

    bottles and baby lotion

are easy to buy and are

    always useful. While

youre out shopping, pickup an item with each visit

    to the store to gradually

    build your stock at home.

    If youre buying for an

    expecting mommy, ask

    her what she needs. This

    will avoid duplicate pur-

    chases. Take advantage of

    extra savings by utilizing

    a digital coupon program

    like DG digital coupons

    and save even more when

    baby items are on sale.

    Take Care of Mommy

    While everyone is excited

    about the new baby, its

    important to also remem-

    ber Mommy. Take time to

    pamper the mom-to-be

    with extra attention and

    ideas that can make her

    life easier.

One practical way to helpher out is by making

    meals that are quick and

    delicious. Retailers like

    Dollar General offer a

    variety of easy-to-fix din-

    ner recipes, from appetiz-

ers to main dishes to side

    dishes and desserts, and

    the ingredients are avail-

    able at great, everyday

low prices. For ideas, check out the DG easy

    meals website at

    www.dg.com/easymeals.

    Make a Gift

DIY is a great way to

    save money and add your

    personal touch to any

    baby shower gift. You can

    make a baby gift basket

with baby toys, bibs and a

    photo frame. Another

    thoughtful idea is to make

    a mom survival kit with

sweets, scented candles, bath items and a new

    movie.

    Giving gifts with that per-

    sonal touch not only saves

    money, but shows the

    new mom how much you

    care.You dont have to let

    the stress of expenses get

in the way of welcominga little one! A little extra

    effort and preparedness

can go a long way to

    make babys arrival fun

    and memorable. (Statepoint)

    The conceptions and reali-

    ties of retirement have

    changed a great deal over

    the past several decades,

    giving many seniors misgiv-

    ings about the future. But

    your golden years can be

    happy, healthy and produc-

    tive, say experts.

    For many individuals, con-

    fusion, fear and an over-

    whelming sense of power-

    lessness accompany the

    prospect of growing old in

    America. The good news is

that we have power toaddress these concerns,

    says Scott Page, author of

    the new book Its Never

    Too Late: Getting Older,

    Wiser, and Worry-Free in

    our Golden Years.

    Are you retired or

    approaching the end of your

    working life? Are you con-

    cerned about an older parent

or loved one? Here, Pageoffers expert tips on living

    better:

    Living Ideas

    Reducing housing expenses

    can have an extra upside.

    For example, downsizing

    your empty nest offers you

the benefit of less house to

    maintain. Moving to a

    region of the country cheap-

    er than your current area

    may take you somewhere

    sunnier, warmer and better

    suited for aging.

    Another popular way to live

    more frugally is to consider

    taking on a roommate. Co-

    living arrangements like the

    The Golden Girls are

becoming more popularwith single or widowed sen-

    iors. It helps save money

    and can be beneficial for

    socialization and support,

    says Page.

    Make Money

    You can rake in extra

    income that doesnt feel like

    work. Review your talents

    and hobbies. Are you an

excellent baker, a talentedwoodworker or musician?

Seniors often have a lot of

    time on their hands, and

they may be able to trans-

    form hobbies or interests

into a way to make a little

    money, says Page, who

    points out that such activi-

ties can also be an excellent

    way to stay engaged and

    active, keeping minds and

    bodies vibrant.

    Saving Tips

    Dont be shy about using

the age card. After all, you

    have worked hard for it.

    Senior discounts are avail-

    able at restaurants, stores,

    on travel, adult education

classes and gym member-ships, and sites like

    Restaurant.com or Groupon

    have special bargain days

    for seniors.

You can also save by elimi-

    nating unnecessary expens-

es. For example -- do you

    still need that landline tele-

    phone? Can you bundle cer-

    tain services to help reduce

    costs?

    Do an inventory of your

    possessions to determine

    which objects to keep and

    which to discard or sell.

    Free worksheets, available

    at scottpage.com/free-tools,

    can help you make smart

    decisions.

    Connect with Friends

    Consider planning meals

    with a support network.

    Maybe Sally takes Monday

    nights, Judy takes

    Wednesday nights and

    Sarah takes Friday nights,

    says Page. Cooking for

    more than one person

    encourages community, and

    can be cost-effective if

    everyone is sharing in theresponsibility.

    Maintain an active social

    media presence online to

    stay connected to friends

    and family. Those with the

    same interests as you are

    just a mouse click away.

    More information about the

    book can be found at

    www.scottpage.com.

    With smart strategies you

    can free yourself from

    worry about aging, while

    getting wiser over time.

Heres What Our Advertisers Have To Say..."My company thrives on local business and the Banner has time and again proven to be the BEST way to reach people in Troop County. If you aren't advertising in the

    Banner, you're missing out!"

    - Dave Reed, Owner of Cheap Geek PC, LLC

The Banner really helps me out. It is the place where people look for deals. They often bring a copy of the Banner with them when they shop. It has been around for a

long time (since 1999), and has proven to be well worth the money to advertise.

    - John Parker, Badcock & More Home Furnishings

Since we've been advertising in the Troup County Banner, our business has more than doubled! Having an advertisement in a locally-produced publication that reaches

more homes than any other has been great for our business!

    - Chris Hagebak, 809 Gallery Of Art

I have been advertising with the Banner for over 10 years, not once have I been pressured. I always recommend the Banner as I have seen many results over the years.

Its always nice to hear I saw your ad in the Banner". Local, nice and honest people!

    - Angie & Kenneth Bradley, Bradleys Antiques

I am pleased to say that more than half of all my jobs come from this listing .- Eric Douglas, Seamless Gutters

    Heart disease is the leading

cause of death in the United

States and is a major cause

    of disability. According to

    the Centers for Disease

    Control and Prevention

    (CDC), coronary heart dis-

    ease is the most common

    form of heart disease and

    often can lead to heart

    attacks.

    February is National Heart

    Month, so American Medical

    Response (AMR) is taking

    the opportunity to provide

tips to help you know the

risks and signs of a heart

    attack.

    Heart attacks can be sud-

    den, but most start slowly

    with mild pain and discom-

    fort, stated (Jason Sampson,

    Regional Director) of AMR.

    Often, people who are hav-

ing a heart attack aren't sure

    what's wrong and therefore

    delay seeking help.

    (Sampson) says to look out

for these signs of a heart

    attack:

    Chest Pain Most heart

    attacks cause discomfort or

pain in the center of the

chest that can last for several

    minutes. The pain may go

away and then return. It can

    feel like uncomfortable pres-

    sure, squeezing, fullness or

    pain.

    Discomfort in Other Areas of

    the Upper Body This can

    include pain or discomfort in

one or both arms, the back,

    neck, jaw or stomach.

    Shortness of Breath May

    occur with or without chest

    discomfort.

    Other signs may include

breaking out in a cold sweat,

    nausea or lightheadedness.

    What to Do:

    If you or someone you're

    with has chest discomfort,

    especially with one or more

of the signs of a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

    Calling 911 is the fastest

    way to get lifesaving treat-

    ment. Emergency medical

    services can begin treatment

    when they arrive. EMTs and

    paramedics are also trained

    to revive someone whose

    heart has stopped.

    If a persons heart stops

    before the ambulance

    arrives, you should begin

    CPR and send someone to

    find an Automated External

    Defibrillator (AED).

    Be Prepared:

It only takes a few minutes

    to learn compression-only

CPR. Call AMR to find out

where you can learn this life-

    saving skill.

    With a booming voice

he said, "I was a soldier

    and I was a military

    pilot. Once, someone

    bought me a lunch. It

was an act of kindness I

    never forgot." I was

    embarrassed when

    applause was heard from

    all of the passengers.

    Later I walked to the

front of the plane so I

    could stretch my legs. A

    man who was seated

about six rows in frontof me reached out his

    hand, wanting to shake

    mine. He left another

    twenty-five dollars in

    my palm.

    When we landed in

    Chicago, I gathered my

    belongings and started to

    deplane. Waiting just

inside the airplane doorwas a man who stopped

    me, put something in my

    shirt pocket, turned, and

    walked away without

    saying a word. Another

    twenty-five dollars!

    Upon entering the termi-

    nal, I saw the soldiers

    gathering for their trip to

    the base. I walked over

    to them and handed

    them seventy-five dol-

    lars. "It will take you

    some time to reach the

    base. It will be about

    time for a sandwich.

    God Bless You."

    Ten young men left that

flight feeling the loveand respect of their fel-

    low travelers. As I

    walked briskly to my

    car, I whispered a prayer

    for their safe return.

    These soldiers were giv-

    ing their all for our

    country. I could only

    give them a couple of

    meals. It seemed so lit-

    tle.

    This story tells of two

    friends who were

    walking through the

    desert. At some point

in the journey they hadan argument, and one

    friend slapped the

    other one in the face.

    The one who got

    slapped was hurt, but

    without saying any-

    thing, wrote in the

    sand: "TODAY MY

    BEST FRIEND

    SLAPPED ME INTHE FACE."

    They kept on walking

    until they found an

    oasis, where they

    decided to take a bath.

    The one, who had been

    slapped, got stuck in

    the mire and started

drowning, but thefriend saved him. After

    the friend recovered

    from nearly drowning,

    he wrote on a stone:

    "TODAY MY BEST

    FRIEND SAVED MY

    LIFE."

    The friend who had

    slapped and saved his

    best friend asked him,

    "After I hurt you, you

    wrote in the sand, but

    now you write on a

    stone... why?"

    The other friend

    replied: "When some-

one hurts us, weshould write it in

    sand... where the

    winds of forgiveness

    can erase it from view.

    But, when someone

    does something good

for us, we shouldengrave it in stone...

    where no wind can

    ever remove it."

Alternative Cold & Flu Remedies To Try This SeasonWhile flu and cold are

    common to every region of

    the world, different cul-

    tures have developed their

    own solutions to tackle the

    all-too-familiar and dread-ful symptoms.

    Today its thought that 70

    percent of your immune

    system lies in your diges-

tive tract, so many of these

    alternative healing methods

rely on food for its curative

    properties. While some

    alternative treatments have

not been evaluated by theFood and Drug

    Administration for effica-

    cy, many people swear by

    them. If you are suffering

    this cold and flu season,

    incorporating these reme-

    dies into your get-well plan

    could be worth a shot.

In Japan: Hot green tea is

poured over a crushedume, which is an alkaline-

    rich Japanese pickled

    plum. Drinking this ume-

boshi tea, full of iron and

    potassium, is said to help

    ease fever associated with

    the flu.

    In the Dominican

    Republic: A paste of honey,

    finely chopped onion and

garlic, and the juice of at

least half of a lime, is

    taken before bedtime. The

    garlic and lime juice, rich

    in vitamin C, boosts immu-

    nity.

    In France: For those with

    the flu, a homeopathic

    approach is taken using

    Oscillococcinum. This

    unusually named medicine

    has been a favorite flu

    fighter of the French for

    more than 70 years.

    Clinical studies show that

    it reduces the duration and

the severity of fever, chills, fatigue, headache and body

    aches. It is recommended

that you take it at the first

    sign of flu symptoms.

    In China: A restorative

dish is made from healingfritillaria bulbs (Chuan bei

mu) and an Asian pear. The

    center of the pear is

    scooped out to form a

    bowl. A teaspoon of honey

    is mixed with fritillaria

    extract, which is then

    poured into the pear. The

    covered dish is steamed for

    45 minutes to create a

warm elixir to soothe thethroat. For maximum

    effect, a honeysuckle and

    licorice root tea chaser pro-

    vides added immune sup-

    port.

    In South America: A plate

    of sliced onions is placed

    on a nightstand overnight.

    The scent from a freshly

chopped onion helps breakup mucus and congestion,

just as it causes the eyes to

    water and nose to run

    while cooking. Loaded

    with sulphur compounds,

    onions also improve circu-

    lation.

works in the body and why

    having a strong immune

system is so important;how flu spreads; when

    children should stay home

    from school; and more.

    tions, get inspired by the
