Competing on television for the first time, Nolen de- feated Danny Wiseman of Baltimore, 202-193, to win the USBC Masters and claim his first career Lumber Liquida- tors Professional Bowlers As- sociation Tour title. Nolen, the No. 1 seed for the championship round, fin- ished as the top qualifier and blew through match play un- defeated to win the title. He finished 7-0 in his matches and became the first top quali- fier to win the title since Mike Scroggins accomplished the feat in 2005. “This means everything to me,” said Nolen, who earned $60,000 and a two-year PBA Tour exemption. “I came into this week wanting to get a win, and if this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life, I have to think that way.” Nolen, 29, sat helpless on the bench as he watched Wise- man finish the match. Needing a strike, nine, spare to even the score or two strikes to win out- right, Wiseman stepped up and left a 10 pin on his first shot to hand Nolen the victory. “I don’t like rooting for people to miss, really I don’t,” said Nolen, who won the PBA Regional Players Invitational in December. “If someone strikes, they earn it and they deserve it, but I wasn’t too up- set to see that 10 pin standing. Danny is a great champion, and I didn’t expect anything other than for him to put 10 back in the pit to win the title.” Wiseman started the title match with three consecutive strikes before struggling with ball reaction down the stretch. You have to live with the decision.” Wiseman, the No. 3 seed, defeated second seed Steve Harman of Camby, Ind., and fourth seed Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., to reach the championship match. NORWALK—The return to Keystone Monday was a rainy one but a pair of friendly control desk men, David and Rob, welcomed us with smiles and super service. Especially Rob, “Mr. Public Relations Personified”. When he ended our league session with an-nouncement of “Thank you for coming to Keystone today and we welcome you back soon”. How about that?

Scoring was good but be-fore we report leaders, a cor-rection to our statement last week that a 700 had never been bowled in the history and Do-ris Lewis came close with 692. I was corrected by Doris who bowled a 700 in our league several years ago and I apolo-gize for not remembering.

Super sub Teri Hefner led the honor roll this week with 221-571, followed by Cyndie Martin 222-562, Roberta Mc-Naught 542, Kathy Parrish 524, Marie Collier 522, Jamie Vallier 521, Karen Mauricio 517, Sandy Lund 204-504, Vi Wilson and Sue McGill tied on 504, Hedy Schoner and Betty Phillips tied on 503, Mary Dixon 502 and Bernice Wil-liams 492.

Keystone #2 swept all three games Monday to add another win to their lead of 55.2 over Doris” Hair Designs at 51, followed by Cerritos #2, 49; David McNaught CPA, 47.2; Westminster #1, 47; Cal Bowleros, 45.2; Westminster #2, 45 and Keystone #1, 44. The rest of the league trails from 38 wins to cellar team at 20.2.

POT POURRI: The strike pot went over $100 Monday and 25 names were called by Sue McGill before Vi got the required strike.

NEXT WEEK—Valley View Monday 10 a.m. Febru-ary 23. Also, balance is now past due for the Vegas Doubles and singles sweeps and there is now a cancellation that is available. See me Monday or call (562) 423-1567 for more information.

LAS VEGAS—The PBA 50th Anniversary Gala was the most spectacular and most impressive bowling event I have ever witnessed.

Dick Evans’ wrote a detailed column and exacting rendition of this festive night at the Charleston Room in the Red Rock Re-sort Hotel and Casino. It was nothing short of a masterpiece.

Consequently, I shall refrain from elaborating on the out-standing program. Any attempt on my part to follow Dick Evans’ presentation of this gala event would be an exercise in futility. Nonetheless, I was “almost” equally impressed with another event that I joyfully participated in.

Several hours prior to the kickoff of the big bash, 38 of the 50 top bowlers were seated at tables alongside the foul lines for a poster/book signing at the Red Rock Lanes. The line started at the high end of the Red Rock Lanes, starting with the 50th place player selected, Bob Strampe, and moved leftward in the order the players finished in the poll, ending up with Walter Ray Wil-liams, who finished in second place behind Earl Anthony.

Absent from this elite group were the following deceased bowlers: Earl Anthony, who was selected as the number one player in PBA history, Dick Weber who finished 3rd in the bal-loting, Don Johnson (8th), Jim Godman(32nd), and Bill Allen (37).

Those unable to attend included Don Carter (11th), Dick Rit-ger (14th), Jim Stefanich (27th), Wayne Zahn (31st), Joe Berardi (41st), Gary Dickinson (46th), and Tommy Hudson (48th)

The fans in attendance were able to purchase elegant slick- paged books published by Luby Publishing Co. that contained mini bios of the Top 50. The books sold for $20 but would have been a bargain at $40. As a matter of fact, the book sales were so overwhelming, they sold out. Many would-be purchasers were offering as high as $300 for a copy. To my knowledge, not one fan was willing to relinquish their jewel. The books are now on sale to the public. However, those unable to buy a book weren’t completely disappointed, The PBA issued posters with pictures of ALL the Top 50 to those in attendance. The line lasted ap-proximately three hours. Included in the line was yours truly, weak legs and all.

I’ve never stood in any line for autographs of anyone; but this was not an ordinary occasion. I sprung at the opportunity to see and talk to many of the PBA players that I coached or admired during the past 50 years. It brought back great memories. Most of them stood up and hugged me and acknowledged our close relationships of the past. It was especially heart-warming to see players whose relationships with me went beyond the bowling lanes…Mike Aulby, Parker Bohn, David Ferraro, Amleto Mo-

PBA 50th Anniversary Galaby John Jowdy

nacelli, George Pappas, David Ozio, and David Husted. It was especially heartening when I approached Pete Weber, whom I have helped coach during the past 15 years. I couldn’t help think how proud his father Dick was as he looked down at his son on this magnificent night.

The 50 top players in PBA history were chosen by a select group of 17 bowling writers, and 17 members of the bowling industry, including coaches and industry leaders.

It must be noted that the balloting rules only included records of PBA members since 1959. Therefore, any accomplishments prior to this date did not come under consideration, which may explain the absence of some of the game’s greatest names. It may also illustrate the conspicuous absence of Don Carter, who finished 11th, from the top five or six place finishers. Carter, captured 11 Majors; the All-Star (US Open ) in 1953-54-57-58, the 1960 PBA National, the 1961 Masters, and five World’s In-vitational tournaments. He recorded these feats prior to the birth of the PBA. Consequently, they were not included on his Top 50 PBA record.

Apparently, majors played a very important role in the voting process. For example, Steve Hoskins, with 10 titles, and Bryan Goebel, with 10 titles, did not make the top 50. Yet, Doug Kent with nine titles, Tommy Hudson, with 10 titles, and Bob Stram-pe, with seven titles, were all selected to the top 50 ahead of Hoskins and Goebel.

Again, it seems that “majors” tended to sway some voters. Doug Kent’s nine titles included FOUR MAJORS…

Tommy Hudson’s nine titles included ONE major.Bob Strampe, who finished 50th in the poll, had seven titles.

However, Strampe garnered three majors; the 1964 All Star (US Open) the 1964 PBA National and the 1966 ABC Masters. Al-though Strampe’s came along too early to have longevity, his three majors apparently impressed the voters.

On the other hand, Steve Hoskins recorded 10 titles, which included TWO MAJORS; the Touring Players Championship in 1997, and again in 1999. Despite the fact that Hoskins’ name appeared on the original list of 100 PBA players sent out by the PBA, he did not survive the Top 50 list and did not qualify for the final voting process. On another note, perhaps Hoskins’ over-sight can be traced to an error in the latest PBA Media Guide. Unbeknown to anyone, Hoskins’ named was omitted from the list of title- holders in the latest PBA Media Guide. The Media Guide, with all statistical records of PBA bowlers, could have certainly played a major role in the bowling writers voting deci-sions. Furthermore, Hoskins’ failure to secure a position for the

exempt at the 2005 Tour Trials may have prevented him from adding any additional titles. His unsuccessful attempt at the Tour Trials not only resulted in his retirement from the PBA Tour, but from bowling altogether.

Bryan Goebel, a 10-time winner, (one more than Hudson) had one major to his credit, the 1998 Tournament of Champions.

Lest I be misunderstood, I believe the voters made great choices. I merely meant to point out the closeness of the ballot-ing. Principally, I wonder if the absence of Hoskins’ name in the list of title- holders in the PBA Media Guide had any affect on the calculations.

Like many other polls, the results are a matter of opinion. Unfortunately, as has occurred in many poll selections, some voters exercise their rights by voting for favorites, rather than rewarding candidates with worthier accomplishments Fair or not, those with voting powers have earned the right to express their opinions.

National Deaf Bowling NewsStogryn Smacks 276-976 in

Deaf Travel at AMF CerritosCERRITOS—Anytime Darrell Stogryn hits big scores, he

does it quietly and without fanfare. That was what he did on Feb. 8 in So Calif. Deaf Traveling League’s stop at AMF Cerritos Lanes, blasting the pins for 276-259-203(738)-238 and league’s new season high 976 replacing his 933 he shot earlier in the sea-son. This writer bowling a couple pairs away from him, did not know how his 276 game was bowled and not even what frame he made his lone spare in.

Not only Stogryn’s big score was a surprise at the usually tough AMF Cerritos lanes as in the past stops there this league always struggled and sometimes without a 800. Stogryn led a honor roll list of 12 bowlers (out of 17) and all 6 trios teams hit 2000 plus series for the 2nd time this season. Plus the league averaged a record 180 plus per bowler.

Following Stogryn on the honor roll was the league president Ed Abakumoff with the only other 800, 805 with 225-194-213-174. Ed’s Riverside team with Emad Aranki’s 746 (169-225-213-139) and Paul Taffolla’s 206/697 was going great guns with 600-596-586 for first three games but all three slumped in their 4th game for 467 and 2249 series. S. F. Valley team closed with the day’s high team game 609 for the day’s high series 2258. Dan-iel Smith finally showed his true colors after his last session’s 213/740, improved greatly with 199-227-191-181 for 798, two pins short of 3rd 800 of the day. Prior to last session Smith in his first time in this scratch league had struggled below his average.

Valley’s Pablo Yoma had 178-183-192-226 for 779 and Rob-ert Taylor had consistent games of 195-191-191-181 for 758 beating by one pin, Valley’s Jim Mohr’s 757 from 192-205-169-191. Valley’s Connie Marchione closed with a 192 for 722, Andy Lorenzo had 215-201 for 712, Gardy Rodgers 700 and Don Mill-wee 225/699 to round up the 12.

Second place S. F. Valley beat 3rd place Glendale 14.5 to 5.5 and climbed up to 1,5 points closer to 1st place Riverside, a 12 to 8 winner over Stogryn’s 5th place El Camino Village. Glendale dropped to 3rd as 4th place Los Angeles moved up to 3rd with a 13 to 7 victory over Smith’s Tri-Cities.

The league thanks Ron Meyer and his AMF Cerritos crew for the excellent scoring conditions and will move to Pickwick Bowl where G.M. Bryan Alpert will have 6 lanes ready for us on Feb. 22 at 1 PM. Gallo Jr. Ended in 246th Place in USBC Masters at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS—In the Tuesday 1st 5 games qualifying round, Frank Gallo, Jr. of Newport News, VA rolled 954 (below 200 average) to place in tie for 285th out of 452 entries in the USBC Masters at the 60 brand new lanes installed in the Cashman Cen-ter. Then in Wednesday’s 2nd 5 games round he improved with 1008 (202 ave.) but his total of 1962 placed him in tie for 246th, way out of the 115th place cut off for 3rd round. So he packed up and flew home.

Mark Fisser who was supposed to bowl in this Masters but his name was not found in among the 452 bowlers results. When I asked Gallo what happened to Mark, Gallo said the 1st round roll call time 8:45 was moved back to 7:15 AM and Mark did not know about this change and arrived in time for his 8:45 squad only to find out that all had started. So Mark being deaf, asked for and got his refund because he was not informed of the change. Anyway Mark will return to Cashman Center in April to bowl in the USBC Open Championships which will run after the end of Masters to the month of July.

Gallo, Jr. will only return to Las Vegas for the USBC Senior Masters and PBA Seniors U.S. Open.

Dantes Tops 264 Entrants To Win ABTA at CAL—Aubrey Harrison 4th, David Mathisen 3rd $275, Debra Sanders ABTA Director, Glen Dantes, Champion $2,700, Kris Ordonez, Glen’s cousin, Ronnie “Ace” Cordero 2nd $550, Angel Hilvano 5th, & Eric Snow Cal Management.

LAKEWOOD— Glen Dantes won his first ABTA title in exciting fashion as he came through in the 10th frame in a thrilling win over a red hot Ace Cordero in a great match to take home a nice $2,700 top prize. Glen won it from the top seeded position.

The scoring was good and most fair at CAL with an ad-justed tournament shot for our event. Making the cut were Men +71 and the ladies +57. Also Super Seniors added to the board were Aubrey Har-rison, Ely Cruz, and Linda Larson.

A great turnout of 264 bowlers ( 4 Squads) saw 64 Semifinalists take the floor, of which all would cash. The top 16 to advance to the single elim finals with3 women min guaranteed to the top 16.

The scoring was conten-tious with a young Man from L. A. Glen Dantes leading the field with a nice +20. In second place was Ryan Nam +179. Glen will sit out and bowl for the title. Ryan to en-ter into the second round of the top 16 finals. It took a +60 to make the top 16 Single Elims at CAL.

The first round rolled and we had Brandon Holden, Da-vid Dittlinger, Michael Wong,

Match Game Est $2,300, Match Series Est $2,850 and 3-6-9 is $1,700Oak Tree is our Host Saturday (One Day)

Saturday 12:30-2:00-3:30 & 5:30PM Semis 7:15 PMKelly Johnson, Gerald San-chez, Christina Cheung, and Josh Koch lose out. They re-ceived checks of $110 each in 10-16th places.

Round two had Angel Hilvano fall to Ace Cordero 243-218. David Mathisen got to Aubrey Harrison 236-198. They got checks of $140 in 6-9th places.

The semi final match was on. Cordero struck often in a big 271-217 win over Ma-thisen. David was 3rd and $275 with Ace off to the title game vs Dantes.

The title game was on. Dantes elected to lead off, and did, with a split and open. Cor-dero then struck and spared. Dantes spared and again opened in frame 3, but then doubles. Cordero was clean.

We had a great game when Glen doubled to take a nice lead as Ace unfortunately flagged the easy four pin. Glen had a lead by 18 pins but Ace dug deep and tossed X’x in the 9th and 10th (a turkey). Glen now needed to Strike Spare in the 10th for the win. He came through with a double in tense times and he is our champion 201/241-203/231 and $2,700 richer for that fact!.

A nice win by a very nice young man! Glen is with us

most every week and Loves CAL Bowl. He is Most de-serving. Congrats Glen!!! A title Well-deserved.

Great bowling By Ace Cor-dero who came so close and David Mathisen in 3rd bowled well also to be sure!

ABTA Notes: Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Minh Dang who was hotter than a Viet-namese Black Penya Pepper with a big +190 for the men. Kristin Willey led the gals +105. They will get paid en-tries for the fine bowling.

The Doubles were headed by Minh Dang and Jun Cade-nas 1511 for $200. Minh teamed with Tim Tran 1461 $180. Dennis Cordero 1457 $150, in 3rd. We paid 21 plac-es and $2,000 in the doubles.

Giang Huynh was drawn for the Hot Shot but missed. So we go for $125 this Sat-urday at Oak Tree in the Hot Shot Pot free weekly to our members! Giang got a $25 consolation for Beer Money. He is most deserving!

The Match Game was matched at CAL due to a 176 game drawn by Dantes. 9 win-ners shared the $2480 and got $275 each: Kris Ordonez, Rey Cruz, Robert Webb, Michael Wong, Deb Bradley, Tony Tang, Giang Huynh, Jeff Taino

& Vuong Do. Wow!! AGAIN the Match

Series was NOT Matched at CAL due to a 648 drawn by Minh Dang and NOT Matched. This $2.00 pot has a carryover of $2802. So we will estimate it to go for $3,100 at Oak Tree Saturday and for $2.00. Big Bucks at Oak Tree you can’t top that!

The 3-6-9 was NOT hit ei-ther as Steven Hower outlast-ed the field but missed in shot 3. We go for $1,800 at Oak Tree! Big Bucks this Saturday Folks!

they usually are. T. J. Cloutier of Texas Hold ‘Em fame was on my flight. He was in first class. I wasn’t. Poker pays well when you are as good at is as he is. 40. Great reason to lose a lot of sleep - Such short nights! Back to the room after midnight and up by 6 am each morning. It was great!39. Seeing Robin Romeo – A real class act and wonderful bowler.38. The banquet food – As a connoisseur of rubber chicken banquets, I thought I was pre-pared. Wrong. The food was exquisite. 37. Meeting Janay Leddy – This entire weekend was in-credibly well organized. To pull together all that had to be done to make this weekend with all these diverse person-alities and needs and demands work smoothly was a real coup. She did a stellar job. 36. Meeting Mike McGrath 35. Valet parking – even with comfortable shoes, this is al-ways helpful. 34. Comfortable shoes – An-other ahhhhh.33. Johnny Guenther – What an honor to meet this great player. 32. Being in people-watching heaven – I really like studying people, how they behave, and how they interact. This was an awesome place to practice those skills. 31. Smoothie from the food court – Surprisingly delicious. 30. Having a kitchen in my room – keep water cold and microwave that popcorn. 29. Norm Duke’s gracious-ness to every autograph seeker – He came out of the paddock to bowl his squad of the pro-am and stopped to honor an autograph request. Within moments, the line was 11 people deep. He made eye contact with every single per-son accompanied by a sincere thanks. 28. John Handegard’s induc-tion speech – A delight; funny, self-deprecating and really en-

gaged the audience. One of his best stories was while he was struggling in the early years he asked a proprietor friend why he just couldn’t seem to aver-age 200. His friend responded, “Well, John, you never shoot a 200 game!”27. Dave Husted – One of the classiest people in the sport. 26. Bottled water – Ahhhhh.25. In-n-Out burger – One of my favorite meals in Vegas; ranks up there just behind the exquisite Austin’s. 22. Bob Strampe and how he dealt with young people – In the autograph line, Mr. Stram-pe was soooo good with the kids. Making eye contact, ask-ing about high games, he made them all feel important.21. Seeing my friends Jim Welch and Phil Perry – Jim is from my area and moved to Vegas to run the center at Sun-set Station. They are lucky to have him. 20. Tammy Boomershine – The Taminator! We bowled the U.S. Olympic Festival together winning Bronze and Gold. She’s still funny. 19. Seeing Bo Burton bowl – He still has it. He looked really good getting to the line. 18. Friday night match play – There’s just nothing like it for drama and excitement, and finding out who’s got game.17. Getting to know Jim Dres-sel a little better.16. ber Randy Pederson’s famous arena 8 pin against Ernie. In an interview after the event, I’m sure I remember reading that Ernie said the 5 pin was off spot in that rack and that you will commonly leave an 8 pin when the 5 is off spot left. I asked him about that rack be-ing off and he said it was not. Is my memory faulty, or his? Hmmph. Ernie is another per-son I could ask a million ques-tions and still not find out all he knows – a really interesting person. 10. Getting to ask Mike Durbin the question – Remem-ber Average Builders? That was a tips segment featuring Mike on the ESPN broadcasts with Denny Schreiner. In one of those segments, he said he changed ball reaction by plac-ing his opposite arm thumb up or down. I was very intrigued by that tip for many years. Recently, I had even searched YouTube to find it, with no success. I know what doing that means to most folks but surely wanted to understand what it meant for his exqui-site game. So, there he was for me to ask. Cool. The answer? I don’t know yet. He couldn’t remember. Maybe I remem-bered the tip wrong…….?9. Susie Anthony – What a gracious and delightful lady. I finally got to tell her my Earl story. He called me ‘Susie-not-my-wife-Minshew’. She loved it. 8. Talking shop with Rick Benoit – What an education. I could ask a million questions of Rick and still only scratch the surface of all he knows.7. Freedom to use your cam-era as much as you wanted.6. The autographs – There were 38 of the Top 50 there. What a thrill to talk to each of them!5. Del Ballard finally sat down – it’s a joke! Del entertained us during his moment in the spot-light for an extended period of time. All three inductees have a Texas connection. Cool.4. The unbridled and genuine joy as the pros greeted friends they had not seen in many years.

3. Norm Duke asked me to sit at his table at the banquet – Wow! 2. All the stuff there was to learn – Every moment was a learning experience. Watch-ing the pros adjust to tough lanes, gamesmanship, tan-trums, great sportsmanship, people interacting with one another, who likes who and who doesn’t, graciousness and caring, people so very glad to see one another, hearing how it used to be and realizing it’s not so different; and it’s very different.1. The stories – ‘nuff said.

Ray was using a Storm Shock Trauma and Ebonite Gamebreaker drilled by Josh Montgomery for the win this weekend. Ray wanted to thank Mark Baker and his son Paul for helping him with his game. Ray wanted to thank Paula, Paul, David, Elena and Fernando for their love and support. Ray also wanted to thank Cal Bowl for hosting the tournament, Storm Bowling Products and the ABT Staff and Directors for running an outstanding tournament. Ray plans on using part of his winnings for new Storm bowling equipment.

The Mystery Game Pot game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #1 was the game drawn. The first chance score of 102 (good for $400) was drawn; the second chance score (good for $200) was 111; third chance score (good for $100) was 248 and 236 was the fourth chance (good for a free entry). There were no winners. The Mystery Pot is available to all members and costs only $5.

The ABT staff and membership would like to thank the management and staff at Cal Bowl for hosting our tournament. Our next scheduled event will be February 28-March 1 at Linbrook Bowl. ers paid $23,200 and received back $41,500, another TAT First.

The Chance tournaments had 144 winners, the sweep-ers had 88 plus 6 bonuses in 3 separate division payoffs, the Ebonite Challenge had 17 cash winners and the main event had 134 checks of $500 to $25,000. TAT gave out 389 prizes (mostly cash) to 484 bowlers which is a 4 out of 5 cash ratio with many checks over $1000. This doesn’t in-clude side pots or brackets. 134 bowlers made it to the finals and even with the marathon entries counting as .5 an entry, one in 11 by squads (mostly daily cuts) made the finals.

Partly because the mara-thon bowlers keep bowling after they make the finals and add more bowlers. Cash prizes increased in each round of the finals with two thirds of the checks well over $1000. 1 out of 4 bowlers made it to the main event finals and al-most 50% made it to either the Ebonite Challenge or the main event finals.

It was an exciting week as 3 different tournament players bowled perfect games. Bowl-ers who used an Ebonite ball when rolling 300 like Joel Reynoso received an extra $1000 bonus.

The new Buddies Mystery Score paid out over $15,000 to over a two dozen different bowlers. All money left over was drawn and given away in the finals (over $5000).

The Ebonite Challenge paid 17 cash spots with last cash of $100. (all participants received a second Ebonite Performance ball -The Pin Slasher).

The winner was Mike Wilk from California for $5000. The other top four were paid $1,000 each and were, (2) Omar Arnett from Texas, (3) Art Nutley from Illinois (4) Tim Bonneville from Arizona (5) and Vaughn Doody from

Nevada. This event has a $10 entry fee and all Qualifiers re-ceived a second Performance Ball by Ebonite (Pin Slasher). Where else can you bowl for $5,000 for a $10 entry fee?

The 4 Chance Tournaments had 144 winners. The 4 free events paid out $21,000 with last cash of $100. Winners were, #1 Chris Klerk from Ari-zona , winner #2 Evan Castillo from Nevada, #3 Larry Hoff-man from Arizona, and #4 was Alan Gibbons from Ireland.

The 3 sweepers paid out over $20,000 with most bowlers receiving 2 ½ price sweeper entries with any mul-tiple entries. The sweepers had $6,000 added money from the sponsors and paid out great by the 3 divisions.

The Ebonite Demo Days ran from the 1st through the 7th of Feb. and many bowlers who did well used the Demo Days and the Ebonite staff to help them get the right ball reaction. Ed Gallagher, Mike Calderon, Shawn Morris and Todd Zenner and all their staff deserve special thanks from all of us at TAT and from the hun-dreds of bowlers who utilized their services.

TAT would also like to thank Etonic. Etonic gave away 32 high performance pairs of shoes to the bowlers in the 4 Chance Tournaments. They increased our prize fund by adding 32 spots for the shoe giveaway.

We at TAT would like to thank the bowlers who partici-pated and our sponsors, espe-cially Ebonite, Buddies Pro Shop.com, Etonic, Verve, K & K Bowling Supply, Enterprise rent-a-car and The Orleans whom without their support, we could not have these mul-tiple prize funds with so many ways to cash. We hope to see you again in July 2009. Exact dates will be announced soon.

Heaven’s Newest Board

Member...by Joy McGregor

ORANGE COUNTY—It is with great sadness that Orange County reports the passing of past president Lu-cile Faw. She left to sit on Heaven’s Board on Thursday, February 12. She had been in poor health for the past several years, getting around in her wheelchair until recently but, throughout, she always kept abreast of the bowling world. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed every aspect of the game, coaching juniors, the competition, the conferences, and service on local, state and national levels. She traveled as a delegate for more than 26 years to national and state conventions and tournaments. She absolutely loved the ca-maraderie at the conventions and seeing the many, many associations gathered from all over the world, all dressed in their association colors. She loved the pomp and circum-stance of watching the parade of flags march down the center aisle.

Lucile originally hailed from Texas and taught Eco-nomics at North State Texas College during her husband Duane’s stint in the United States Marine Corps. They married just before Duane’s deployment to the Pacific as a dive bomber pilot. She then worked for 16 years as a real-tor in Orange County. Lucile’s bowling credentials were quite impressive. She had traveled extensively, serving on many local association boards: She had been a member of Or-ange County for more than 23 years; past president of Wash-ington D.C. area WBA; served on No. Carolina and Virginia Boards and also served as San Fernando’s first vice president. She served on too many com-mittees to mention, always do-ing a superb job. Lucile was very knowledgeable, always approachable and highly re-spected in the bowling com-munity.

One of Luicile’s fondest memories was in 2005 when she was inducted into the Or-ange County Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. Her end-ing comment that eventful day, “My life has been blessed with a happy marriage of 63 years, and family life ... and bowl-ing!”

Lucile’s husband Duane who retired as Brigadier Gen-eral of the United States Ma-rine Corps, preceded her in death several years ago and she is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Condolences go out to her family. Lucile was a sweet soul and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. We will miss you Lucile and know you are already taking control of your Heavenly Board!

Cards may be sent to Bob Faw & family, 2399-3a Via Mariposa W., Laguna Woods, 92637. Lucile is to be created; a memorial service is pending.

They Said “It’ll Never Work” by Pat Helwig

The San Diego 600 Club played host to family, friends, and bowlers at the Annual 500 and 600 Club tournaments in Laugh-lin, NV. January 9-11, 2009.

The week end began with 40 members, friends, and spouses departing for Laughlin at 7:30 AM in a chartered bus. Approxi-mately 40 other folks chose to drive. With a comfortable bus, plenty of bottled water, snacks, and a great driver it was a pleas-ant trip. The song fest on the return trip was especially nice. A very large Thank You goes to Nancy Henderson, Fran Arnold, and Pete Zirkle – my Bus Helpers.

The Friday Night No Tap is becoming very popular with our members. It was organized five years ago by Joyce Jensen Presi-dent of the 500 Club and our B. J. Davalos. Both ladies were on hand working hard to provide a good tournament. Thanks to Joyce, raffle items for both Friday and Saturday tournaments in-cluded a ball and bag donated by the Riverside Lanes Pro-Shop.

Monica Dlugos won the Friday No Tap with 846 hdcp. se-ries. She had a good time with her games of 278, 224, and 254. Other 600 Club members who cashed were B.J. Davalos, Con-nie Palmer, Jo Ann Graves, and Linda Dennis. There were 55 entries. 18 places enjoyed a $581.50 pay out thanks to the addi-tion of $169.00 from the raffle proceeds. Low to cash was a 694 series for $15.50.

My early wakeup call and presence in the bowling center by 8 AM Saturday put the wheels in motion to prepare for the 31st Annual 500/600 Club Singles Tournament check in. Tables, chairs, and signs were all in place as the working crew arrived – right on schedule.

The stations became active at 10:30 AM with Nancy Hen-derson as bowler check in followed by a gift hand out by Louise Barr – a 2009 Calendar record book with pen to match. Next was Anna Barr with name engraved casino cards and holders fol-lowed by the 50/50 sales people Jo Ann Graves, her daughter Amanda Martin and Amanda’s friend DJ. Completing the station loop was the raffle team of Bridget Ferrentino and Ruth Rich-ardson. They were all a fun loving group and made the check in a pleasant experience. As bowlers reported to their lanes they found candy treats donated by Anna Barr.

There were 79 entries with 16 paid places. First place and $100.00 went to 500 Club member Kristy Nachtweh with a 680 hdcp. series. 600 Club members Ana Zirkle placed second with 668,and Gloria Penley 4th with 660. Low to cash was a 612 series for $24.00

The Riverside Lanes staff was very helpful and pleasant to work with.

This tournament weekend was a challenge for me – I could not speak – lost my voice. I wrote a lot of notes. Thanks to all who stepped forward to help, it was a great week end.

They Said “It’ll Never Work” – that was 31 years ago. The very idea of a 500 Club member competing in a tournament with a 600 club member was considered ridiculous by some. This thought was not shared with the board members of each club. Members of each club bowled as team mates in leagues so why not a tournament in Las Vegas? The San Diego 600 Club hosted the first tournament at the Las Vegas Show Boat in 1979, and will continue to host in odd-numbered years. It was wonderful! There were over 200 entries and 4 chartered buses. Everyone loved it!

Our tournament entries are down but our clubs still enjoy the competition and trip out of town. One member who shared the negative thought has bowled in 30 of the 31 tournaments. Ha! How great is that! It Does Work!

620 Scratch TriosAt Forest Lanes

LAKE FOREST — Round Two ended this week with Team 4 sweeping Freek Racing and sporting two asterisks — qualifying them for the roll-off at leagues end. Contributors were Dan Murray 547, Mike Cacace 579 and Alan Meyer-son 62. The sidepots this week went to a couple of regulars at the cash window. #1 Lou Dietrich 224, #2 Lou Dietrich 217, #3 Jeff Carr 231. Winning the Se-ries Pot was Mike Cacace with a 634, and not even winning an individual pot! No use talking about high in-dividual scores for last week — we just did! Plus Kim Martin’s 630 and Kathy McCollom’s 242 for the gals. Team 8 is still holding up the league! Their win/loss record of 16/39 doesn’t reflect their great attitude and dedication to the league. David Brackett’s 185, Kim Martin’s 200 and Sam Hitchcock’s 215 makes them competitive — but the pins don’t co-operate sometimes! Week 23 starts Round 3 on the “Cheeta Pattern”. Does that mean a new ball, a new position, lessons or just fling it in the same old direction?? See your favorite ball driller — maybe he will know! Congrats to Josh Koch for your 173-264-298/735.

STUDIO CITY—We all celebrated the made up holiday of Valentine’s Day this past week. We all spent money or wasted time to do some-thing nice for someone who cares about you or someone who you wished cared for you. Yet the message is lost when it’s individual, instead we honor all of our bowlers weekly. We don’t need a day to tell you how great you are; we only need this article.

PINZ ADULTS Cupid may have hit you with an arrow or passed you yet again. No bitterness, but next time can you at least allow me a chance to plead. I want all of our bowlers to have the love bug towards bowl-ing. This is the one true thing that will make your heart flutter, if you disagree watch someone on 11 strikes waiting for that 300 game. Until then here’s the scores: Tavern Guild: Mark Peavey 290/723, Tony Annibale 234/649, Rick Kondo 620, Ed Dusseau 226/612, Tom Whitaker 220/606, Isabelle Vincent 223, John Leivas 220. 44 Blue: Mike Hale 171/447, Sam Park 427. S.C.B.L.: Neil Inman 234/689, Jim Foltyn 258/681, Dave Yama-moto 268/678, Marvin Nance 236/646, Bob Hatch 634, Michael Gehrke 234. Rock-N-Bowlers: Jay Firestone 477, David Phillips 194/447.

PINZ JUNIORS Writer’s mistake last week: we said that state tournament is upon us (in delicious vernacular) yet it is actually State Tournament that you need to worry about first. We’re sure that this is just a mishap since we have seen your growth as bowlers. We know that whatever tournament or week it is that you will continually bowl great, but can we just ask for a few of you to please win this year. Put us on the map, send Barbara off in style, make us champions, or any other valedictiion that you need to prove these scores: Adult-Junior: Treven Goldsmith 231/610, Damond Taylor 213/570, Jamie Spector 212/544, Sharon Goldsmith 163/462, Brad Spector 158/435. Senior Scratch: Scott Englehart 257/859, Natalie Kato 226/855, Nathan Honda 228/778, Treven Goldsmith 744, Nikolai Berk 220/742, Brittlan Halpern 215. Senior Galaxies: Daniel Cohen 141/412, Mario Vargas 149/395, Noah Lander 136/387, Wendy Rowlett 131/387, Jessica Taylor 120/334. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 124/357, Nicholas Martinez 115/256. Pee Wee Bumpers: Andrew Parker 101/192, Kayla Arriaga 97/183, Oran Peretz 86/153, Samantha Vargas 90/152, Steven Santiago 63/125.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES So many heartbreaks, so many close calls, yet one thing stays true: you are the backbone of bowling. Maybe it’s time to join the first ever inaugural Pinz Bowling Tournament. Show those loud-mouth, randy-type night bowlers that you can compete. We know you have it in you since these scores came in: Happy Timers: Ken Burkenheim 221/534, Nelson Hicks 509, Ruth Swick 153/424, Yolanda Dragotta 388, Jack Burkenheim 209, Cynthia Burkenheim 156. Coffee and Donuts: Elayne Klein 214/557, Hildegard Miller 200/479, Charlene Gaffney 192/486, Bernie Filosa 183/466, Donna Hickox 459, Sandy Feder 196, Sharon Lawrence 183. Joslyn Seniors: Bill Mancini 222/656, Arnold Freedman 504, Di-anna Kanawyer 157/444, Teri Bonato 168/410, Gary Olsen 195. Senior Social: Nelson Hicks 203/494, Art Michener 167/475, Joel Margolis 171/456, Gas Sumampong 451, Teri Bonato 163/445, Charlene Gaffney 176. Bowler of the Week: This week we honor one of our own sweethearts; Jamie Spector. She not only helps out by be-ing a terrific person, but she works until 1 a.m. and bowls at 9 a.m. for a 212 and 544 series in Adult Juniors. That’s out of sight, hopefully you an keep up the tough schedule. Niceness Quote of the Week: “Have you been to Marty’s party? Everyone was there.” — Nice, after asked why he couldn’t compete in the hugely popular Pinz Tournament of Champions.

LAKEWOOD — We hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend. The Cal Bowl Open Scratch 10-Gamer is set for this Saturday, February 21. Action starts at 10:00 a.m., so check-in early. AMF Bowl-O-Drome – February 8th, 2009 (L-R): Christian Hernandez – 3rd; Randall De Leon – 1st; Gabriella Mayfield – 2nd

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

TORRANCE – AMF Bowl-O-Drome was the site for the most recent tournament of the JAT Farm Club. Thirty-two bowlers joined us which al-lowed for a cut of the top 16 to advance to match play. Scores were reasonable for the Farm Club as we spread out during qualifying and then doubled up for match play.

In qualifying Brett Huntoon gave us our tournament high game with his very nice 278. Other high scorers included Gabriella Mayfield 225-268,

Brandon Pekins 251-225, Stevn Roderick 225-246, Christian Hernandez 245, Gary Smith 227-237-239, Josh Gartrell 236, Steven Alford 234-231, Chris Garcia 224-234, Anthony Rose 225, Justin Gadaire 221, Brian Hernandez 221, Nolan Smith 221, and Adam Dubia 220. The cut to advance came in at minus 45, while Huntoon led the field at plus 88.

More high scoring in match play gives us Mayfield 229-229-254, Roderick 242-224-227, Randall De Leon 233-237, Alford 236, C. Hernandez 223-227, Gartrell 225-226, Garcia 224-225, Rose 223, and Gadaire 222. Garcia made a good jump of eight positions while Gartrell jumped seven spots to get into the finals.

And we start off the TV-Style Roll-off finals with 5th seed Gartrell (+109) against the 4th seed Roderick (+149). In a close match, it was Roder-ick advancing 182-172. Now he faced 3rd see C. Hernandez (+165) and seats swapped as Hernandez advances 238-192. Here Hernandez met 2nd seed De Leon (+182) as we had another close match. In the end, De Leon advanced 243-236 to now meet the top seed Mayfield (+288). In the best of three games, De Leon struck first with a 210-190 win. In game two, Mayfield fought back to capture a 187-142 game. And in the last and deciding game, it was De Leon 207-154 for his first Farm Club title. Congratulations Randall.

Our next tournament is this Sunday at AMF Beverly Lanes in Montebello. This is our Alumni tournament where names of the past will see if they can still hang with the bowlers of today. There will be separate divisions for Farm Club, Open and Alumni, each looking for that title. There may even be a match between the division winners to claim all of the bragging rights. Check-in begins at 8:15 and bowling at 9:00. Farm Club bowlers should bring their JAT membership card with them to make check-in easier for my replacement. Please be on your best behavior just as you would when I’m there.

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

WESTMINSTER/LAKE-WOOD – Here is a double up-date of SED Jr. Travel as we get brought up to current.

Two week ago we visited Westminster Lanes with a fine showing. Accommodations and staff were grand, thank you. Our big shooters of the day include Max Slevcove go-ing 201-225-214/827. Joining Max in the weeks 800 club is Kim Ferdnance 208-203-208/810. Nice bowling you two. Additionally we have Brandyn Roque 242-214/782, J.D. Pelow 217/780, and Mark Curtis 212/721.

Then this last Saturday we move up the freeway to Cal Bowl. Here we were show-cased right in front of the main desk and had quite a number of spectators there to watch the action. Mr. Pelow kept up the 800 club with his performance going 211-247-212/806. Very good showing on tough con-ditions. We also had Slev-cove 210-226/766, Ferdnance 207/745, Curtis 227/763, and Deanna Carrillo 712, to round out the high scoring.

This week will find us at Gage Bowl. We start up the action at 2:00. Lastly, thank you all for the Valentine sweets hugs and kisses. An old fart like me really needs it. See you Saturday.2nd Travis Zehntner and Champion Charlie Hair

by David Yamauchi

Charlie Hair Goes Three-PeatCongratulations to Charlie Hair on winning his third consecu-

tive JAT title at AMF Bowl-O-Drome last Sunday. Top seeded James Hefley got to the semi-finals before falling to 5th seed Travis Zehntner while 6th seeded Jeremy Glover lost to 7th seed Charlie Hair to set up the championship match. Charlie had a great shot deep inside while Travis couldn’t overcome the dry heads as Charlie took the title in two games 232-201 and 224-166. Who will stop the hottest bowler on tour at AMF Beverly this Sunday as he goes for the four-bagger? Log on to www.bowljat.org to view highlights of the tournament.

Alumni Event This WeekendThe JAT will be celebrating its 36th year with a grand alumni

event at AMF Beverly Bowl on February 22, 2009. After numer-ous requests and based on the popularity of last year’s event we will be getting together again to say “hello” to old friends and to compete out on the lanes again! The event will feature a “JAT Alumni Division” in addition to the Open Division and Farm Club bowling this Sunday. We will also have a raffle with four new balls from Brunswick (thanks Robert Lawrence!) Even if you don’t bowl anymore please come out and say hello and catch up with old friends and support the JAT. Of course, all proceeds from this event benefit the JAT Scholarship Fund.

Open and Farm- Be On Time To BeverlyWe anticipate it being very crowded at the 36-lane center this

weekend. Open Division and Farm Club will bowl their match-play two matches to a pair so we need to get started on time! Check-in will close at 9:00 promptly so be on time. $2 scholar-ship brackets will be Open Division only this Sunday because of the extra bowlers.

USBC Makes Age ChangeUSBC has made a ruling to change the eligible age for junior

bowling to 20 years old beginning next season. Please know that we are in constant contact with them right now objecting to them making the change without warning and cutting short the careers of our current junior bowlers. I consider the move very detrimental to junior bowling- especially the scratch bowling. I am seriously considering instituting a non-sanctioned “Senior Division” next year for bowlers age 21-24 if they do not consider making changes to the ruling, or dropping USBC sanctioning all-together and continuing with our current format. Please drop me your comments at [email protected] so we know what you are all thinking too!

Keep In Touch With UsSign up for e-mail updates about special events at our web-

site www.bowljat.org. While online you can join our Facebook group “Junior Amateur Tour” or take a look at online JAT tour-nament highlights by searching “Junior Amateur Tour” or “JAT” on YouTube.com! Check out the latest schedule updates, scores, highlights, photos and more at www.bowljat.org and we’ll see you on the 22nd!

Wilma WarrenPassed Away Sunday

DOWNEY — Wilma Warren, wife of Bill Warren, passed away on Sunday. This 86 year old bowler was a tiger on the lanes. She and Bill had been bowling together for over 40 years at Del Rio Lanes and Keystone Lanes. She bowled many state, na-tional, and local tournaments with her team of gal friends. They always had look-alike shirts and fun team names. Wilma is survived by Bill, one daughter and two grand-children.
