But not long ago, the news media reported that the Millers got a huge surprise when they opened their fields to anyone who wanted to pick up free vegetables left over after the harvest: forty thousand people showed up! Joe Miller said they opened the farm for the free public gleaning—the ancient practice of picking up leftover food in farm fields after the harvest—after hearing reports of food being stolen from churches. The Millers had expected five thousand to ten thousand people would show up to collect free potatoes, carrots, and leeks. Instead, an estimated eleven thousand vehicles snaked around cornfields and extended more than two miles down the road. About thirty acres of the six- hundred-acre farm became a parking lot. Some people parked their cars along two nearby highways to take to the field with sacks, wagons, and barrels. The Millers’ fields were picked so clean on one Saturday that their plans for a second day had to be cancelled. “To say we were overwhelmed is putting it mildly,” Chris Miller told local reporters. “People obviously need food.” Altogether, she said that around 600,000 pounds of produce had been gleaned from the fields in that one day. From our Pastor, Fr. Jack Sewell

A s you know by now, I will be leaving Our Lady of Fatima parish in July. It is a time of great transi-tion for you as a parish community, and for me as a pastor. However, that may not be the only transition that some of us may be experiencing during the com-ing months. Weddings, graduations, and retirements

may also fall on our calendars before summer. It does for me. I will be retiring from the Air Force Reserve Chaplain Corps in May. As I write this week’s column, I am sitting in the Atlanta, Georgia airport waiting for my flight home from my next to last official chaplain duty. Robins AFB, GA, is the headquarters of the Air Force Reserve Command, including the Reserve Chaplain Corps. I met with my successor Mobilization Assistant to the Chief of Chaplains, the Command Chaplain, and the senior staff to plan out the year ahead. During the conference breaks, I had the op-portunity to look back over 31 years of chaplain minis-try with these chaplains and chaplain assistants with whom I've shared worship, night flightline visitation, deployments to Saudi Arabia and Ko-rea, and countless mentoring moments. We talked, laughed, and shared great memories of the blessings God has brought about in our common work of honoring God, serving airmen, and pursuing excellence--the vi-sion of the Chief of Chaplains. Our paths had crossed many times over the years, and our conversations reminded me of how God works won-ders in the midst of great challenges, sufferings, and difficulties that those in military service experience in their unique way. Our charter is to pro-vide for the spiritual needs of the men and women in uniform, and for their families. We provide worship, pastoral care, and advise our leaders on spiritual issues. In doing so, we know that we are strengthening our country by strengthening those who protect it. This conference was about the future, a future guided by holy and dedicated chaplains and chaplain assistants of numerous faiths. As we formed policy, assigned personnel, and prayed together, we knew that the Lord is our guide. In whatever transitions we are experiencing, may we continue to depend upon God who is our light and our salvation.

"in the Lord's eyes, one day is as a

thousand years, and a thousand years are as a day." (2 Peter 3:8)

Collection for the Church in Latin America/Eastern Europe This weekend, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America/Eastern Europe. Many unique challenges face the Church in these regions. A lack of priests and trained lay ministers, high emigra-tion rates, and the alarming pace at which parishioners are leaving the faith make it difficult for the region’s Church to provide for the faithful. It is more important than ever that we keep faith with the Church in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Please give generously in next week’s Col-lection. Catholic Men's Fellowship Meeting “Describe your RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ.” This Saturday, February 25th, 6:30 AM, men of all ages are welcome to join this Faith Sharing get together. We meet in McGowan Hall the 2nd and 4th Satur-days of every month. You’ll enjoy talking about what’s going on in our Spiritual lives as we discuss Sun-day’s readings. This gathering has really evolved into a great experience where many new friendships have been created, and we’re done in just 90 minutes. Questions? Sugges-tions? Al Ortiz 412-9126; [email protected] Please join us for coffee and donuts. Free Income Tax Preparation at OLF Our parish is providing free income tax preparation services for all fami-lies who earn less than $49,000 a year. This service will be available every Saturday through April 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McGowan Hall room E. Contact Javier Castillo to schedule an ap-pointment at 492-4101 or by email [email protected]

Parish Office The Parish and Diocesan offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20th for President’s Day. If your group or ministry plans to meet this day, please pick up the keys you need by Friday, Feb. 17th before 6 p.m.

Welcome to Our Lady of Fatima Parish 4

Lent begins this Wednesday The forty days Lent provide us as Catholics with a unique opportunity for conversion. The Lenten disci-plines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are central to the Christian life and help us respond to our longing for God so that we may live deeper and fuller lives. Here are opportunities to prac-tice these disciplines in your parish during these Forty Days.

Ash Wednesday—February 22 Mass schedule: 7 & 8:30 am; 6 pm (English);

7:30 pm (Spanish) Prayer service with ashes: 4 pm

Evening Mass Every Wednesday at 6:30 pm (February 29—April 4)

Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) Every Wednesday following evening Mass

Saturday from 4 to 5 pm

Stations of the Cross Every Friday at 7 pm (February 24—March 30)

As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.

Psalm 42:2

Pick up your Rice Bowl today — This Lent, our parish once again will join with other Catholics in our diocese and throughout the United States in supporting Operation Rice Bowl, a simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Operation Rice Bowl benefits the work of Catholic Relief Ser-vices. Each year, we are invited to pray with our families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn more about our global community and the challenges of poverty over-seas and in our own community; and give sacrificially to support those in need. We are disciples for

all nations. As Jesus’ disciples, we are called to care for one another. “Rice bowls” – a tangible symbol of the hardships faced by many here and abroad – will be blessed and distributed at all Masses this weekend.

Have you made YOUR pledge to this year’s Pastoral Services Appeal? Your participation matters! We are inching our way to the half-way point but still short of our goal. Support your parish and the work of Catholics through-out Orange County by making your pledge to this year’s appeal. No gift is too small – every dollar helps to sustain this important work. Don’t wait. Pledge online at www.olfchurch.net Look for the Online Giving icon at the top of the home page. (Pledge forms also available at church entrances.) “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.”

Galatians 6:9-10

Advocating for Justice: Our responsibility as Catholics Our democratic process affords us with an invaluable op-portunity to shape a society that respects the life and dig-nity of each and every person. Petitions to place the fol-lowing initiatives on the November ballot will be avail-able in Room A in McGowan Hall after all Masses THIS WEEKEND. For more information, visit www.rcbo.org/respect-life or www.cacatholic.org Death Penalty Repeal (SAFE ) This initiative seeks to repeal the death penalty as maxi-mum punishment for capital offenses and replaces it with life imprisonment without parole. This applies retroac-tively to persons already sentenced to death and requires convicted persons to work while incarcerated and apply their wages to victim restitution. Parental Notification Initiative (PNI) This initiative would require a 48 hour waiting period after parental notification before a young girl under the age 18 could secure an abortion. It provides exceptions for medical emergency, parental or judicial waiver or documented parental abuse. “These two initiatives have appeared at the same time on the political landscape and bring into sharp focus impor-tant moral issues, namely our society’s treatment of nas-cent life, family life and even a sinful or errant life. In keeping with our fundamental principles, we believe that social policy should respect and support the role of par-ents in caring for their children. Justice should uphold human dignity as it protects the community. For these reasons, we, the Catholic bishops of California, support both initiatives as responsible efforts to bring common sense, compassion and prudent justice into Califor-nia’s public policy.”
