NEWSLETTER OF THE NANAIMO YACHT CLUB February 2014 Commodore’s Report Dick Maclennan Hi Everyone, we are starting off on another great year. Lots of events are being planned for the upcoming year and I am really excited for 2014 it will be amazing I am sure. The Year Book Committee is in the process of com- piling information for completion in March 2014. Just a re- minder to members if any of your personal information, i.e. phone number, e-mail or mailing address have changed since the last printing of the Year Book please forward those changes to Carol Shaw and she will see that it is up- dated in the next edition. I am a firm supporter of family events and coming up very soon is Valentine's Day so lets not forget our loved ones and celebrate having those people in our lives. As some of you already know my partner Sue and your Commodore were married in a small ceremony at our Yacht Club in the Lounge on January 25th, 2014. There are no secrets in NYC, in no small part to George letting the cat out of the bag at the last General Meeting!!!! It was a wonderful day and Sue and I are both very happy. Sue has been involved in Club Events and helping on committees for the past six years so it is wonderful to have her on board full time ha! ha! The Admin and Planning Committees have been hard at work on various issues important to our Club including City and Port Authority Leases and we should have some updated news by our March General Meeting. Sue and I attended the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce Nominee Celebration Meeting January 31,2014 as our Yacht Club was nominated for an Award from the Chamber of Commerce under the category of "Tourism Impact". The nomina- tion itself is a recognition of our efforts to make Nanaimo a place people want to visit and it is wonderful to receive this kind of nomination from the business com- munity. At the Nominee Meeting tonight we found out that in our group NYC is in the three finalists the winner of which will be announced at a Gala Award Cere- mony on February 21st, 2014. Rear Commodore’s Report Pat Grounds Harbour & Moorage: As Docks are under my bridge this year, I did a 2 hour dock walkabout looking for any dock violations, safety issues, & din-ghy storage situations. NYC Members I would say 99% of you deserve 5 stars!!! I came across 3 very minor violations, whereas 2 have been corrected and I am currently working on the 3rd. A big concern is the Dinghy Storage area – it was very obvious that many of the stored dinghies have not moved in a very long time. We will work on this very seriously in the upcoming weeks, as there is a strong growing demand for kayak and dinghy storage at our club. In addition one of the items on the dock maintenance list is the maintaining of the Mast Tower, which will take place this Spring. Visitor & Reciprocal Moorage: The Commit-tee and I met and continued the review/update and condensing of the visitor’s brochure. This is coming along very well and should be ready for print this spring. We also discussed a rec-ommendation regarding utility/service fees to our mooring visitors. Recommendation would be to charge All Visitors a $5.00/day Utility Ser-

vice Fee (this would cover the cost of power, water, garbage disposal and wifi). Please see the Notice of Motion in this Logline to be voted on at the March General Meeting. Plans to Pressure Wash the visiting mooring docks – to be done before May 24th Long Weekend. On the recommendation of the Reciprocal Moorage Committee: Passed at the Executive Meeting Notice of Motion: Motion to Fee Schedule Page 102 C: MOORAGE & DRY STORAGE: add to #4 Visitors - $5.00/day service and utility fee (this would cover: power, water, garbage disposal and wifi). Also: Delete: D: ELECTRICAL (Page 102) – delete #4. Visitors 15 amp $3.00/day 30 amp $5.00/day Moorage Allocation: Currently our Moorage Waiting Lists are being updated on the new computer program. Shortly we will have up-dated lists on all members waiting for moorage. Recently there have been 3 permanent moor-age spots relinquished, and 3 permanent moor-age spots allocated.

Fleet Captain’s Report Rob Wiebe Fellow Members, I’ve been work-ing with our Sail Training Coordi-nator and Coach, Jill Christie to get ready for the upcoming sea-son. Or, more like it, I’m helping Jill on issues like brochure con-tent, marketing and some capital issues. Jill has things in hand, but as I mentioned to the Executive, my job is to smooth out the wrinkles between an emerging program in the 21st century, and a Club that’s been around for over 80 years. We’re making progress, marketing plans and materi-als are in place. For those of you wishing to enroll your kids or grandkids in the Sail Training Program, we are planning an early bird discount, available to the members before the public. Keep your eyes open for printed and online information. On the Cruising front, Chairpersons Roland/Shelley Godin and Dave Ross are beginning plans for the

season’s cruises. The first Cruise of the season is the Easter Egg Hunt. This event may be pared down this year to a straight Club event, rather than the public event we’ve put on the past few years. The event is not until April 20th this year, so we’ll see what develops. Last thing to mention is Outstations. I’ve begun dis-cussions with our previous partner Marinas in Pen-der and Ganges Harbours, and we plan to continue the relationships with those again this year. I looked at Genoa Bay Marina, but decided there was just not enough in the budget to finance a third outstation. We may have an opportunity to visit Genoa Bay Ma-rina on a Club Cruise this year, and I hope to have more on that by our next General Meeting. I feel like our plans are progressing well for the next season, and I’m sure I can feel the planet tilting to-wards spring. Cheers, Rob Wiebe

BLUE WATER CRUISING MID-ISLAND GROUP PRESENTATION

FEBRUARY 20th Nanaimo Yacht Club

Doors open 7:00 Presentation at 7:30 In 2009, BCA members Michael Walsh and Edi Gelin left Vancouver and headed south in their Hunter 49 'Sequitur'. Their first year took them to Mexico, the Galapagos and Peru. During the second year they explored off-shore, coastal and inland in Peru and Chile down as far as Puerto Montt. In their third year they adven-tured through Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, around Cape Horn to the Falklands and up the Atlan-tic coasts. The presentation will discuss cruising in comfort and style through remote regions, wild weather and un-predictable bureaucracies and it will focus on their voyage from Puerto Montt to the Horn and beyond. Michael made this presentation recently in Victoria and it was VERY well received. BCA fosters seamanship and friendship for people with an active interest in offshore cruising.

Vice Commodore’s Report Terri-Lynne Campbell January has felt like a month of “getting out of the gates and full speed ahead”. I have managed to meet with many of the com-mittee’s and had very interesting conversations. It never seizes to amaze me that even with all the time I’m at the club there is so much still to be introduced to.

One Monday evening I was privy to observing some of the juniors huddled over the lounge tables working on their pdp’s (personal development plans) under Jill’s guidance. Another Monday evening I enjoyed a Wing Theory Seminar hosted by Tim Daniel’s. He donated his time and knowledge to provide the jun-iors and interested members with sail trim options.

Yet another Monday evening I attended a sailing presentation on offshore racing. Chuck Skewes ,a very decorated world class sailor from the San Diego area chose not to accept the donations to cover his travel costs but donated them to our junior program. Such support is very inspiring and appreciated.

Regarding the Symphony Splash Cruise in Victoria Harbour August 1-3, the GVHA has extended the registration dates for all groups until March. At this time I believe we still have 6 or 7 spots available with our group. If you would like to spend this weekend on the water in Victoria Harbour with our club please contact Thora Brooks at [email protected] or at 25-383-8326 ex 243.

Looking at the calendar February appears to be an-other busy month. I hope to meet many of you at our Past Commodore’s Wine and Cheese February 15.

And coming up next month ... SAILING ACROSS PACIFIC - PREPARING YOUR BOAT FOR THE VOYAGE March 20th 7:00pm NORM COOPER

Race Committee

Ken Lott

Hello NYC sailors! I’m Ken Lott of Sea Lion, I have agreed to be race committee chairman. My task is to manage and promote sailboat racing at our club with the help of a talented group of racers volunteering to keep our sport vibrant.

The 2014 racing season is under way at NYC. We have had 2 Winter Series race days in light but pleasant conditions for a total of 5 races. Results and photos are on the NYC website, click on racing and follow the link to Winter Series. Our fleet uses recording GPS trackers and the saved tracks can be viewed on the website. An interesting and informa-tive way to review and analyze the race.

Second Saturday Singlehand Series (we just call it 4S) is a pursuit race. Racers meet at the clubhouse at 10 am on the second Saturday of every month and choose from 4 set courses, agree on the direc-tion to run the course depending on wind conditions and start from the mouth of Newcastle Channel at a time based on each boats rating.

Slow boats start first followed by progressively faster boats based on their real world rating managed by

Richard Simpson. As the race progresses the boats get closer together rather than further apart as in a fleet start. This is a great way for sailors with limited racing experience to get involved and develop the confidence to get further into sailboat racing. The weather on January 11 was nasty, the skippers all agreed not to sail.

Pacific International Yachting Association (PIYA) is an affiliate of US Sailing and sets boat and equip-ment standards for sailboat racing in our corner of the ocean.

NYC is a member. PIYA has created a new Safety Equipment Requirement (SER) for 2014 incorporat-ing significant changes from previous editions. All races are classed based on five categories ranging from inshore (like our club series races) to offshore ocean races like Vic-Maui. Each category has a set of standards for the construction and equipment that must be carried on board to participate in a race.

Notice Of Race documents set the category for an event, some changes may be made to equipment requirements for special conditions. Compliance with PIYA standards is a requirement for entry. Please check the new SER here and look over your boat.

Yearbook Committee

Joan Costa

Just wanted to send out a little hello/request to all of our Yacht club members. We are currently starting to put together the 2014 yearbook.

This is a team effort....

The committee is working on collecting all of the ad-vertising to pay for the printing of the book, updating all of our calendars, committee lists, current tables and more.

YOUR part is quite simple please check that your name, address, email, phone number, boat name, size of boat, power or sail are correct. Send all of these changes to Carol so she can update the mas-ter list on her computer. Her list is what we use to make up the roster portion of the book with.

Also those great boating shots that you pull out to share with your family and friends...You know the ones.... send them in to us so we can share them with everyone. The higher the resolution the better, email them to me at <[email protected]> or drop them in the Yearbook mail slot down at the club.

Our deadline is Feb. 28th

* Just one other thing regarding the advertising. We do always try to maintain a "$0.00" budget..... we sell advertising space to cover our printing costs. If there

are not as many ads, we cut some content, spare photo pages etc. but if we have more advertisers.... we can add pages! If there is anyone out there that would like to advertise, know that their boss likes to give community support, or if you would just like to take out an advertising space to celebrate a special event... then give us a call.

** Another note of interest** close to 30 of our cur-rent advertisers are all NYC members! Let's all re-member that this is also another way that they are in fact supporting their club. So let us in turn support them with our business!

*** note to all who are chairman of our many commit-tees, Isabel Maluish is collecting your Standing committee members list for this year. I am sure she would love to get an email with your updated list.

Thanks a bunch!

The Yearbook is all about YOU!

Cheers!
