Wow ! Talk about revving it up in 2016! What a wonderful start. January 1st at the New Year’s Day Brunch, January 5th at our Annual Meeting, and the installation ceremony on January 9th we had record

numbers of nobles, ladies, friends and family show up to support the new leaders of Osman Temple for this year. I want to thank everyone that joined us.

These were very special dates for Terri and I, you’re Board of Directors (the Divan) and all that accepted positions this year. I had the privilege of Introducing my son Nick, my future son in law Josh both of which are Osman Shriners along with my grandson Brayden future Shriner in 17 years (I predict). My Daughter Brittany and Daughter in-law Jess, thank you for your support. Another very special person in my life is Stephanie Krause and her family, thank you for attending my installation. Stephanie is a patient at Shriners Twin Cities Hospital. This is one of the reasons I became a Shriner, the other reason is all of YOU, the nobles, you’re ladies and families. The camaraderie we build every time we parade, go to a meeting or a function keeps me focused on why I joined. To top that off these functions were done in our own home Osman Shrine. The facility was set up beautifully with flowers and decorations, and the food was fabulous as always. If you were unable to come to the Installation on Saturday my wife Terri and I gave out some gifts and our Potentate’s Pins for the year and would like you to have them. Please stop by the office and Tom and Doreen would be happy to get you something from us (while supplies last).

Since our last Edition of the Osman Magazine the Divan and I have been

attending many of the Club and Unit Holiday Parties. We also attended installations for officers throughout Shrinedom, and our Masonic Lodges and appendant bodies. Please make sure you let the office know if you have a function or an event you would like us to attend and we will do everything we can to get you representation from Osman.

We had our first parade of the year at Winter Carnival with an Oasis ahead of time. It was fun and a great time was had by all who attended. Thanks for coming out as it is always cold.

There are many events for you to participate in this year. Please attend when you can, and remember to keep the Osman Magazine handy. Refer to it whenever you need a reminder of what’s happening. Please get your Osman Magazine photos, articles and dates in by the 10th of the month if you want it in the next month’s edition.

Here are some highlights of things taking place. You’re elected Divan, Chief ’s and a few membership representatives will be going to Midwest Winter Session in Marquette Michigan to review hotel setup and plan for the Midwest Summer Session August 4-6.

We will have our Club and Unit Seminar at Osman on February 13th, all Club and Unit leaders should attend along with anyone else that would like to learn about how we run the Temple. Please bring other members and your ladies are welcomed. Representatives from the Shrine Hospital along with a few patients will be there. The seminar will be followed by a lunch. After lunch we will hold our first Ceremonial of the year (please get your candidates signed up now) let’s build this group of men we call Shriners, bring in your brothers and show them how much fun we have, and the philanthropy we support - the Shriner’s

Hospital’s for Children.

The New York Potentate’s Trip informational presentations will be in Rochester on February 17th, and again on February 18th at the Lost Spur Event Center both at 6:30pm.Please attend to listen to the itinerary, if you are even thinking about going, come and listen in (no pressure) just fun.

On March 8th is our next Stated Meeting please come out in force a full room is always more fun!

March 26th is the Easter Egg Hunt.

March 31st April 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be the “Longest continuous running Shrine Circus worldwide” - The Osman Shrine Circus is coming to Town! “All hands on deck “- We need your help again this year!

I am looking forward to a fun filled year, seeing a lot of familiar faces and new faces to add to the excitement.

Let’s continue to REV it up in 2016!

Respectfully yours,

Bruce Thomas Potentate 2016

The Chief’s CornerHappy Valentine

day to all the Ladies of Osman Shrine! Without your support, patience and forgiveness, we could not do what we do each year!

Our installation for 2016 and reception to honor our new Potentate and Divan was a great day, in spite of the weather.

We will also have completed our first 2016 parade by the time this issue gets to you, St Paul’s Winter Carnival Parade on Saturday Jan 30th. Thanks to all the units, Nobles, and everyone who helped make this first parade a huge success. Special thanks to last year’s COS, Rique Beslin, for all your help.

The Oasis before the parade was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the chili dogs! Thanks to the Aides who dedicated their Saturday to serve their fellow Nobles some warm food and drink before the parade.

Our next event, Osman’s Club and Unit Seminar is Feb 13th, at the Spur this year, with Hospital staff and patients coming to the Spur. This is a great event and I highly encourage all units to attend and see what is happening at the hospital and get briefed on our parade and activity

plans for the year. Any Noble is welcome to attend, especially if you are new to Osman! New this year we are planning a Ceremonial after the Club and Unit meeting! This should be a fun day!

Parade Updates are:

Rochester Parade, Gala /Ball. June 24/25th. We will not be attending the South St Paul, Kaposia Day’s Parade this year due to the conflict with the parades and events in Rochester this year. More details to follow.

Lakeville Pan-O Prog parade is July 9th, Oasis will be advised, lineup is usually 4pm.

White Bear Ave Parade is July 13th, line up is 6pm, step off 7pm. The Oasis will be at the same location as last year, as I know it today, more info later.

MSA is Aug 3-6th, with the 2 parades, the 4th and the 6th. I sincerely hope we have a big turnout for MSA. The location of Marquette Michigan is one I personally have never been there and want to explore the area, plus help out the Ahmed Shriners show their city what Shriners are all about. The parades are Thursday evening the 4th, and Sat morning the 6th. We will gain more info at the winter planning session on Feb 4-6th.

St Paul Park parade will be returning this year on the 2nd Saturday in Aug, (the13th), I believe. Our Oasis would be at the St Paul Park Legion where we have enjoyed some great food and hospitality in the past.

The Northfield parade Defeat of Jesse James Day’s is Sept 11th as I know it today based on last year’s parade date of Sept 13th. I will advise more as I get more details from them.

River Falls Parade is usually the first Sat in Oct, but the exact date is not available yet. I don’t have a lot of details, but it should be early Oct and the AM Oasis, should be the same. A new wrinkle this year might be a combo with the Chili Cook Off event? Stay tuned for more info on this!

My major goal for this year is still to have our parade season defined as best we can by the February Club and Unit seminar. This will allow the units to better plan their involvement in local community parades, to raise money for themselves and our hospital.

I challenge all Nobles to get involved this year, to make it the best experience you have had as a Shriner!

2016 Osman Chief of Staff

Rochester ZagalasWas January in

Minnesota and all though the land not a car was running all parked and camped. The members were quit just waiting for spring in hopes that the weather would break with a zing. They

meet every Wednesday have breakfast together, planning and jawing with little

accomplished. They visit about last year and the year to come all knowing that spring really has begun. They look around the table to see who is there; they know that some are warmer than others as they look at the Brothers. They try to pretend they enjoy the cold weather knowing full well it could be better. Those that are south continue to plan on going back to the North, as soon as they can. The joy of white sand between their feet, and the

70 degrees cannot be beat. The wives all praying that winter will end, so their husbands can leave them alone again. It’s soon back to the North with parades and such, so we can all meet in a rush. Please end this cold weather so the Bothers can look at each other rather than a book.

May the Joy of the New Year be with each of you.

Daddy-O’s

Greetings All Osman Nobles and Ladies

By the time you are reading this, our first parade of the year will be in the books. It is personally one of my favorite parades. It gives

us all a little perspective as to why we live in Minnesota. With that being said, we had a great turn out and it was a fun way to start 2016.

The LOH provided the colors and was part of the Honor Guard at the

Potentate’s Installation. It was quite an honor and a great event. We had a lot of participation. Thank you to everyone that was involved.

Congratulations to the Illustrious Sir Bruce Thomas and his Lady Terri. The LOH is very excited about the events that are planned, and even a new parade or two.

It is going to be an exciting year for Osman, and the LOH is ready to “rev” it up in 2016. With all of your help and participation, we can continue to make a difference.

If you are a new Noble to Osman and are proud to carry the flag of our Nation, we would like to talk to you. You do not need to be a veteran to join. Please feel free to contact me or any other member of the Legion of Honor.

Have a great month! Commander,

Todd Swedberg

“A long time ago… In a galaxy far, far away.” This introduction holds special relevance for many of us that are reliving previous chapters of our life. We now have the pleasure of remembering the wonder we once felt as we saw the first installment of the Star Wars franchise, and have the ability to share that with a younger audience. Regardless of whether your inner-critic allows you to say you liked The Force Awakens, if you enjoyed the original Star Wars, chances are good that this new addition has taken you back to fond memories of when you first met the now classic characters.

As with Star Wars, all good things stay relevant – even if lost or forgotten for a while. It is as true with our fine

institution as with anything else. It is why our tenants and philosophies have withstood the test of time. The classics stick around.

The Daddy-O’s strongly believe in this message. As we build our Shrine unit, we remember to reminisce, laugh, honor, and cherish our childhoods by remembering the things that made them great. We are inspired by the laughter and wonder of the kids we serve – as is/will be reflected in our outerwear, events and most importantly: our hearts and dreams.

Production is underway for a new line of drift trikes (big wheels for big kids.) Our prototypes are being retrofitted. This will kick-start our ability to form a

unified set of trikes, and get us ready for parade season, and we look forward to building them together. There is also no doubt in our minds that once Shriners (or potential Shriners) ride on one, they will be instantly hooked; it is truly an instant injection of the giggles. … So that said, if you or someone you know is someone that all of this resonates with, please come see us. We meet on the second Thursdays at the Clarion in Rochester. We are always glad to see our friends, and Brothers. They are the cat’s pajamas.

Stay cool, and go go Daddy-O’s.

Fraternally,Brad Phelps (Ward Cleaver)

On behalf of the Austin Shrine Club Oriental Band, Congratulations to Ill Sir Bruce Thomas and the 2016 Divan. Based on your plans for 2016 you are in for a busy

year. Your working with the Clubs and Units will result in a very good year.

Twelve Nobles and two ladies traveled via the Band bus to the Osman Installation on Sat. Jan. 9th. And wouldn’t you know, it was the coldest day we have had so far this winter. But we survived and everyone had a very good day.

One of the very successful community projects for our Club and Unit is our partnership with the Salvation Army in the Austin Area. The first Friday of December is the day we cover as much of Austin as possible with the person power we have, collecting for the Red Kettle Campaign. Noble Bill Newell is in charge of this project. The collected amount on this day was $7,240.00. A

grant was submitted to MN Masonic Charities (MMC) for a match and the total resulted in $14,480.00. The members who participated along with help from the ladies (including widows) helped this project achieve success.

In addition, as a community project, Brothers from Fidelity Lodge #39, with help from ladies collected each Friday and Saturday from Thanksgiving to Christmas at the local HyVee Food Store. The amount collected with the matching grant from MMC resulted in $24,962.00 for the local Salvation Army Food Shelf. This combined with the amount generated by the Shrine Members totaled $39,400.00. Brother and Noble Dean Johnson was in charge of this project. Quite a contribution as a result of many volunteer hours at the Red Kettles. Our members should be very proud. Now we will gear for the sale of Circus Plaques. Noble Otto Volkert leads us in this project.

The monthly meeting will be Thursday, Feb. 11 at a site to be determined. The calling committee will provide details.

Osman Shrine Membership Committee“Let’s REV it up in 2016!”

The 2016 membership committee has officially launched! This committee includes some great members who are going to come together and change our Temple direction. Nobles, Club & Units, events and planning, Office staff and Masonic Lodges will soon be impacted by our efforts. Our mission is to reach out, approach and embrace all options in this effort to make our Temple grow and provide the best experience. Isn’t that setting the bar rather high? Maybe, but we are OSMAN!

New units underway this year are the “Sportsman Club”, “Daddy - O’s,” “Bowler Boyz Social Cigar Club”, and the “Bag Pipers.” Let me tell ya Nobles were in this all together. Better communication will provide all of us to get involved.

“Mail-chimp” will be BLASTING OFF more than ever. This communication will offer a weekly update on Events and Notifications. Look for it every Sunday afternoon in your Email. Make sure you’re on our Email list! Contact Doreen at [email protected] to be added.

Last but not least we are looking for input and participation. Please consider joining our team. Email us at [email protected] to join us in this great work!

During the annual installation of Officer’s at Newport Lodge No. 118, several members of Osman’s own Cycle Corps were installed. Al Rieder was installed as Worshipful Master, Pete Staloch as Secretary, P.P. Frank Spevak as Lodge Education Officer, Steve Ingram as Deacon, Greg French and Cliff Warling as Stewards, and Scot Overby as Tyler. Looks like the new home of the Osman Cycles!

Bowler Boyz Social & Cigar Club“Life’s frustrations can be eased by one puff at a time”

The 2016 Cigar Cub has officially gone up in smoke! The purpose of the club

is to bring Nobles together along with their friends once a month to enjoy

conversation and discuss ways to support our Temple. Locations will change,

as we will be trying different menus, libations and smoking locations. This is

an open event to invite potential new Shrine members. Also, you don’t have to

smoke. Dinner camaraderie will prevail and a later smoke is optional.

It’s January and what a busy month. REV IT UP 2016! Thanks for all who attended and assisted our new Illustrious Potentate Bruce Thomas. Thanks to our newly elected

Divan and board of Directors. A special thanks for out going Potentate Jeff Olsen and his lady Julie for a great year.

Like other Clubs & Units (C&U) many members are flying the coup and heading for warmer weather. But most of us, it’s carry on and enjoy our Temple home and all it offers.

The Mites have been notified already

by communities requesting our presence. We will be at the Winter Carnival with wheels to the ground and Maple Lake for the St. Patrick’s parade in March. We need snow tires people, anyone have any contacts?

Many of our Mite members are also members of other C&U. Remember Nobles, you can have fun in many other ways by joining another C&U.

The Mighty Mites are looking foreword and spending time this winter with our fellow Nobles!

The Mighty Mites are always looking for new members. If you have not yet joined a Club or Unit the Mites maybe

just what you need. We provide many activities to all whether you ride a car or not.

Greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies!

We’re in the firm grips of winter now, but with a lot to look forward to in the coming months, including our much-anticipated parade

season, it will go by fast and soon we will have Chang on the street again!

First of all, let me congratulate our Dragon brother Bruce Thomas on being elected and installed as Potentate. We all know Illustrious Sir Bruce will do a tremendous job for us in 2016 and we will be there to assist him along the way. Whoo! Whoo! 2016 will be The Year! Incredible ceremony at at the Lost Spur. I know all of us were proud to be a part of The Honor Guard. I also enjoyed attending my first Shrine Temple meeting.

Congratulations also to our own Dan Rasmussen on being elected as the RSAC President for 2016. We are proud to have our guys leading us through the next 12 months.

As for our “happenings,” Art Pavlish tells me that Chang is currently getting a bit of a makeover. He is in for some very-much needed body repairs

(sounds like something we all need ourselves every now and then...!). Chang’s head is also getting some work—some paint touch-up and having some mechanical work done. Art has assured me he will be ready to go in time for our parade season.

Hope all of you who attended our Christmas Party last month at Willow

Creek had a good time. It’s

always good to spend an evening dining and sharing stories with fellow Nobles and our Ladies.

Don’t forget to contact Art about signing up to help at the Circus. This year’s Circus dates are March 31st through April 3rd at the State Fair Coliseum. We could use everyone’s help, for one shift or for as many as you can find time for. I had a great time up there last year—I think we all did—and I know we will again in 2016! We hope to have Chang on hand for this event, as well, as Art has been busy planning for a proper “Dragon Cave” for our booth this year. Can’t wait to see what he’s put together!

Remember to keep Dale Clark, who recently had surgery, in our thoughts.

Fraternally yours

Mike Smith

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

The Osman Womens Auxiliary wants to congratulate our newly elected Potentate, Illustrious Sir Bruce Thomas and his Lady Terri. We wish you a great year, and we are looking forward to working with you in 2016.

The Auxiliary had the privilege of running the coat check for the Potentate’s Installation and Reception. Thank you, Illustrious Sir Bruce, for allowing us to do the coat check, and thank you to everyone who donated “tip money” to the Auxiliary. This is one more way that we are able to raise money to help provide mobility equipment for the children at Shriners

Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. Also thank you to the ladies who manned the coat check: Linda Johnson, Marjorie Park, Gee Winter, Kay Skoog, Linda Will, Diane Johnson, Kathy Flicek, and Kathy Sportelli. You did a great job!

I would like to extend a special thank you to Ron and Paraleen Pew and the members of the Rochester Area Shrine Club for all of your donations to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. For the past several years, Ron Pew has made beautifully hand crafted wooden rolling pins, last year he added wooden bowls in addition to the rolling pins to raffle at the Rochester Holiday party with all of the proceeds going to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. This year Ron made the beautiful rolling pins, bowls, and he added dice shakers. Again, all of the items were gorgeous, and everyone wanted to win one of his handmade items. Ron sold $725 in raffle tickets at the Rochester Holiday party, and he once again donated all of the raffle money to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. Thank you Ron and Paraleen, you are amazing!! We so appreciate your generosity!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the Clubs and Units for your wonderful generosity to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. Through the Parade to Glory, the Clubs and Units donated $13,500 to the Auxiliary as printed in the January issue of the Osman. We

know how hard you work to earn your money, all the parades you participate in plus the fund raisers you do, and we so much appreciate your donation to our Auxiliary. We also appreciate all you do year round to support the Womens Auxiliary, donating toys, pop tabs and much more. Thank you!

I’m very pleased to announce that all of our current Osman

Womens Auxiliary Board members have graciously agreed to continue to serve on the Board for 2016. These dedicated ladies on the Auxiliary Board have been busy planning exciting events for the upcoming year. We are going to start our year with the Auxiliary BUNCO Party. Instead of having the BUNCO Party on a Thursday evening, we are going to have it on a Saturday this year. The BUNCO Party will be on Saturday, March 19, at the Lost Spur / Osman Event Center. There will be a light lunch prior to playing BUNCO. Please mark your calendar now; so, you can join us for the BUNCO Party. You will be receiving your invitation by e-mail or postal mail soon. The calendar of events for the full 2016 year is below, be sure to put all of these on your 2016 calendar.

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support to the Auxiliary. Your donations are making a difference in the lives of the children at Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. We appreciate everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the NileGreetings from

Mat-Sha Temple No. 62. Happy New Year. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that your wishes come true. Yes, the Viking have made it to the playoffs. I am writing this just 2 days before the big event. Even though I know this is Minnesota, how can you go from 33 degrees to a high of below zero, and of all days, the big play off.???

It’s also 1 day before we welcome in our new Potentate Bruce Thomas and his Lady, Terri. Over the Year as Queen I have gotten to know Ill Sir Bruce and First Lady Terri. I have to say he did a wonderful job at our Official Visit, and our Supreme Queen Sharon St. John is most impressed with Ill Sir Bruce.

I am looking forward to the leadership of Ill Sir Bruce and the Osman Divan. The Ladies of Mat-Sha Temple are here to help and support you any way you may need…. Please do not hesitate to call on us!

I have to let you all know that Terri

Thomas plays one mean game of BUNCO. I partnered up with her a few time during the evening when I joined the Auxiliary’s Bunco night. The dice are lucky for her. I had a great night getting to know so many people.

Mat-Sha Temple would like to wish Ill. Sir Bruce Thomas, his Lady Terri and all of Osman Shrine a wonderful year.

We are still collecting toys, Books, and School Supplies for the Hospital along with gift cards to local restaurants. Gift cards can range from $5.00 up to $20.00, or however much you want to donate. A new toy always puts a smile on a child’s face.

We are continuing our annual Nut and Candy Sales. Again we have chosen to use Midwest/Northern Nut Company from North East Minneapolis. Order forms are available from Princess Royal Dawn Hurd and she will be out and about selling nuts and candy at various upcoming events. Please contact Princess Dawn at [email protected].

Our next Stated Session is at 10:00 AM on February 20, 2016 we’ll go

Back to the 80’s. We meet at the St. Paul Masonic Center, 200 Plato Blvd. After the Stated Session, Mat-Sha has a delicious lunch for $5.00/per person. Everyone is welcome to join us, including the gentleman. I look forward to seeing everyone again.
