IHBA members on Friday, April 22. Details are still being worked out, but if you are interested in
consigning, contact committee members David

From the President… By Bill Goehring, IHBA president
This winter in southeast Iowa has really been one to talk about. December’s warm temperatures and extreme rainfall made for very poor conditions in feed yards and pens across a very large area this year. When you put those conditions on top of what happened in the cattle market through the fourth quarter of 2015, it made for some of the most extreme challenges for cattlemen to get through in the history of the business.
Then along came Christmas and the cattlemen
received the two gifts we most needed: the market screamed higher for eight days and we finally froze up! It
changed the feeling of all parts of the business in the short time between Christmas and New Year’s. Since then the weather has been good for the cattle and the market is still in a very jerky movement, but feeders and cattlemen have a lot better attitude! Calving season has arrived and so far it sounds like everyone is starting off really well. Everyone is always excited to get those new genetics on the ground and see if last year’s matings met up with our expectations. As the information and data have poured into the seed stock business over the past years, I believe we have fewer surprises and more consistent results in what we see at calving time.
Whether you are in the seed stock business or the commercial business, take advantage of what is available in genetics to move your program in the direction you want to go. We have just been through a very robust time in the cattle market where everything we did made a profit. We are entering a time that the decisions we make need to be based on solid information to keep operations profitable. As you select bulls and females to build your programs this spring, trust in the data and genomics that you can get a hold of and it will pay you dividends for years to come. Good luck to you all at the Iowa Beef Expo and the coming year. I sure look forward to seeing everyone.
Welcome, New Members!

JNHE Steers Need DNA Test
According to a new AHA rule, all steers
showing at the Junior National Hereford Expo must have a basic DNA test on file at the association.
Juniors planning to show a steer at the 2016 JNHE in Madison, Wis., must submit DNA for their steers
by April 1 before they will be allowed to enter them for the show.
To request a DNA test kit, call AHA customer service at 816-842-3757 or send an e-mail to
[email protected]. If requesting a DNA test by mail, you will need to provide your member number,
the animal’s registration number and the reason for
the DNA testing.
