Mazal tov:

RABBI'S CORNER

TWITTER NATIONI’d like to talk about Twitter. This social media platform has shown up in news story after news story over the past several months. What started out as the side project of two software developers who simply wanted to keep tabs on one another’s project status, has literally become one of largest communication technologies of the last 100 years. Even the President-elect uses Twitter

to communicate directly with the world, often creating confusion when Trump’s Tweets are mistaken as policy statements.

Social media falls inevitably short when trying to substitute for nuanced, substantive conversation about anything more complex than the weather. Wishing a friend or family member happy birthday through the internet (although appreciated) rings hollow and false. In an age of cell phones it tells them we chose not to connect in a more personal way.

The 20th century philosopher of media, Walter Ong, had much to say about our society’s increasing reliance on social media, and Twitter specifically. Ong was the president of the Modern Language Association, a professor and historian of religion, and a Jesuit priest. His academic focus was the difference between oral culture—in which stories and ideas are shared through spoken language, and literate culture—in which stories and ideas are shared through writing, text and print media. In some ways, of course, we are much better off as a literate society. The greatest advance of the 20th century, according to Ong, was our ability to develop technology which allowed us to become more literate. Jews understand this inherently; we are the “People of the Book” after all.

But Ong was also the first to identify what has become a disturbing trend. As the internet has enveloped our lives, and Jews have risked becoming the People of the Facebook page and Twitter feed, we have all actually become more “oral” about our “literacy.” In other words, Ong warned, we must be careful not to treat conversations we have in print as if they were conversations we have in person.

The difficulty is that online and print dialogue lacks context and nuance. Our online posts are permanent (presumably), but are usually intended to be spontaneous, immediate, and are often not well thought out. Our tweets, and certainly Trump’s, will be analyzed and processed as if they were policy statements, mostly because they are, indeed, statements to which we must be held accountable. But twitter was never intended to stand in for open and honest communication about complex issues, and 140 characters are woefully inadequate for the task. As People of the Book, we have too much respect for the written (or typed) word to mistake the two.

We should all approach this brave new world with trepidation and concern. In our own lives, and in the lives of our leaders, we must demand not only accountability and integrity, but also transparency, engagement and inspiration. We wish to be involved in the political life of our country—to be well represented and to trust that our elected officials have our best interests in mind, and share our values. Every communication we receive from them, whether oral or written, interviews or articles, mission statements or sermons, even 140 character tweets, help us understand the direction our leadership wants to help us to go. Twitter presents the most powerful tool to date for those messages to reach us, but only when its power is understood.

One of the activities that I have engaged in for the past five years is working as a Collections Processor at the Great American Songbook Foundation. The list of songwriters and lyricists catalogued at the Foundation is heavily populated with Jews. Did you know that the lyrics for “Unchained Melody” were created by Hy Zaret—an American Jew? There are other more

famous names responsible for writing American popular songs.

Irving Berlin was one of the first, if not the first, to be counted as a Jewish-American songwriter. According to his biography on the Songwriters Hall of Fame website, Berlin composed over 1000 songs. Born in Byelorussia in 1888, Berlin and his family came to America in 1893. His first major hit was “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” published in 1911. Other songs in his catalogue include “Blue Skies” and “God Bless America.” Berlin is known for the Broadway musicals Annie Get Your Gun and Call Me Madam. However, he also created the music for Hollywood films such as Holiday Inn and White Christmas.

Writing almost exclusively with each other from 1924 until George’s death in 1937, were the Gershwin brothers. Their first Broadway hit was Lady Be Good in 1924. According to the

Gershwin website: With their trilogy of political satires—STRIKE UP THE BAND, the Pulitzer Prize-winning OF THEE I SING, and its sequel, LET `EM EAT CAKE (all three written with playwrights George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind)—they helped raise popular musical theatre to a new level of sophistication.

In Hollywood, they created words and music for the films An American in Paris and Funny Face.

One of the Jewish composers actually born on American soil was Harold Arlen. He was the composer of “Stormy Weather” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” But his best known work was the film score for The Wizard of Oz. While he was not known for his Broadway scores, Arlen collaborated with the greatest of the Tin Pan Alley lyricists, including E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, Johnny Mercer, Ted Koehler, Leo Robin, Ira Gershwin, Dorothy Fields and Truman Capote.

Music from the Great American Songbook will be the subject of the Second Sunday Concert on February 12. Richard Glazier—a native of Indianapolis—will come home to perform his program “From Broadway to Hollywood.” The concert begins at 2:00 pm and is free to the public. Mark your calendar and plan to join us for a wonderful afternoon of great American songs.

Congratulations to Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation on its 160th anniversary!

SECOND SUNDAY CONCERTFebruary 12 at 2pmRichard Glazier: Broadway to HollywoodEvery artist has an epiphany. For classically-trained, award-winning pianist and Indianapolis native, Richard Glazier, it happened at age nine, when he saw the film “Girl Crazy” with a score by George & Ira Gershwin. He was so excited by the music he heard, he was prompted

to write a fan letter to famed lyricist Ira Gershwin. After corresponding with each other for three years, Gershwin invited his young friend, then 12, to meet him in Beverly Hills.

Glazier's passion for the Great American Popular Song has led him to create special programs celebrating both eras. He plays incredible piano arrangements, then tells the history behind the songs, sharing fascinating stories about the composers, the shows, the films and the stars. He also shares funny anecdotes.

Join us for an afternoon of song, story and a surprise or two! Second Sunday Concerts are made possible through the generosity of IHC’s Brotherhood, Sisterhood and Dr. and Mrs. Roger Hurwitz.

WHAT’S NEWTu BiSh’vat, The Jewish New Year of the Trees, occurs on Saturday, February 11 this year. The holiday (like Hanukkah, it has various English spellings and also is a minor holiday), offers an opportunity to read about Judaism and the environment. There are several children’s books you may wish to read, including A Seder for Tu B’Shevat, by Harlene Appelman and Jane Shapiro, Grandpa and Me on Tu B’Shevat, by Marji Gold-Vukson, Happy Birthday, Tree!, by Madelyn Rosenberg, Sammy Spider’s First Tu B’Shevat, by Sylvia A. Rouss, A Tree is Nice, by Janice Udry, Just a Dream, by Chris van Allburg, The Never Ending Greenness, by Neil Waldman, and Pearl Plants a Tree, by Jane Zalben,One of the most beautiful and interesting books is Behold the Trees, written by Sue Alexander and dramatically illustrated by Leonid Gore. The story starts in 5000 B.C.E. in the land of Canaan and recounts the history and inspiring importance of trees in Israel from antiquity to the present day.For adults, there are several books that deal with nature written by Nogah Hareuveni: Desert and Shepherd in Our Biblical Heritage, Nature in Our Biblical Heritage, and Tree and Shrub in Our Biblical Heritage. Also look for books on the environment, such as Ecology & the Jewish Spirit, edited by Ellen Bernstein, The Way into Judaism and the Environment by Jeremy Bernstein, The Natural History of the Bible, by Daniel Hillel, and Torah of the Earth, Vol. 1 and Vol.2: Exploring 4,000 Years of Ecology in Jewish Thought, edited by Arthur Waskow. Specific to the holiday, see Trees, Earth, and Torah; A Tu B’Shvat Anthology, edited by Ari Elon, Naomi Hyman and Arthur Waskow, and Celebrating The Jewish Year: The Winter Holidays, by Paul Steinberg, which includes a section on Tu b’Shevat. The Steinberg book is a Jewish Publications Society volume that highlights sources, interpretations of biblical texts, the modern significance of the holiday and several meditations. This is a user-friendly work with a broad-based appeal. In addition, books that describe all Jewish holidays usually have a brief article on Tu BiSh’vat and the library also has vertical file articles from periodicals. If you go through the stacks, see Call Numbers 220.8, 240, 242.2, and 613.5 to peruse books of interest.Enjoy the holiday, preserve and savor the environment.Temple Library is open whenever the building is open. February is shaping up to be an exciting month. We are kicking off with Small Chai playing with our friends from the JCC! This is always a great event and the children really enjoy running around and playing. Rishonim will be going to the Monon Center for a fun day of swimming indoors. It may be cold outside, but in there it’s a balmy 88 degrees. 2017 is also the year that NFTY Convention is happening and we are fortunate enough to have it so close to home in Chicago, Illinois. We have a few young adults attending and representing IHC.

Dan Nichols will be here as our Artist-in-Residence for the weekend of February 24-26. We are so excited to welcome him and cannot wait to hear his beautiful voice. Dan will just have finished playing all weekend for over 1000 NFTYites and we are lucky to have him give us a “private” concert on Saturday, February 25. Tickets are on sale at http://bit.do/dannicholsIHC, so hurry and get yours today. I hope to see you all there!

SHPOLA: Then and NowFor over 18 years IHC has helped to support a small Jewish community “Menorah,” in the little Ukrainian town of Shpola. We are committed to helping secure the last of this small Jewish community that was once very large. Before World War II there were over 12,000 Jews living there. There were many small Synagogues and one big, sponsored by the very prominent citizens of tsarist Ukraine Brodsky.Over 8,000 Jews were killed by Nazi and Ukrainian nationalists during the first several days of occupation.Today the Jewish community of Shpola is 40 people strong. Most of them are not young. They often come together for Shabbat and Jewish holidays where they share memories about traditions kept by their parents and grandparents. They also read Torah with the help of instructors, coming to Shpola, or in the Sunday School, organized in the nearby bigger town Korsun. They typically celebrate the High Holy days in Korsun or in Kiev, where Brodsky sponsored the construction of one of the biggest synagogue in Europe. This synagogue was recently renovated and returned to Jews of Ukraine.

SHALOM CHAVERIM!We are well into the winter months now, and trying to keep warm. Oddly enough, this is the time of year that we celebrate Tu BiSh’vat, the new year for trees. This is when the sap begins to rise—not here: we are still frozen here in the United States—but in the trees in Israel. Because we are thinking about the cycle of nature when celebrating Tu BiSh’vat it’s often a time to think about all kinds of cycles. It is key planning and preparation time for the fall. There will be dates and times beginning in February for parlor meetings where we, as parents and educators, can explore and discuss our Jewish values and their importance in order to begin to develop an alignment between these values and our expected outcomes for the school.By the way—our program is EXCELLENT! As a Jewish educator for more than 20 years, I am thrilled with the components of our program which include all the best pedagogic techniques for meaningful learning: experiential learning, content-based learning, project-based learning, family learning, and community-based learning. I want to work together with you to create clear and demonstrable links between what we do in our education program and what we value in our Jewish lives. We will be able to say why we do everything that we do: What purpose does “x” serve? What value does “x” reflect? What are our values? How do we put them into action? The answer to the question “Why do I have to go to religious school?” will be clear at IHC. I hope you will join the discussion. Please feel free to email/contact me to get involved.L’ShalomJed Filler, Director of Lifelong Learning [email protected]

On December 17, 2016, Danielle Klooster, daughter of Amy and John Klooster, was called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. While this day was one of celebration, joy, and pride for Danielle's family, it was also an extremely difficult one as it occurred only one week after the passing of their beloved Karen Jacobs Grunwald. Karen was a wonderful daughter to Susie and Dick Jacobs, a loving sister to Laurie Pecorarro and David Jacobs, a genuine and loyal friend, an active member of our congregation and community, but above all else, Karen was a loving and devoted mother to her children Stephanie and Drew Grunwald. Karen's immense love for her children was apparent to all who knew her, and as a parent, one could not help but feel inspired by the incredible devotion and love between this mother and her children.

Karen was especially thankful and appreciative of those who showed love, affection, compassion, and kindness to her children throughout their lives. While Danielle was considering and wrestling with a meaningful way to give back to our community, she felt inspired to find a way to honor Karen's life and her memory.

Danielle then learned about the incredible gift-giving program that Karen had started 10 years ago following her son Drew's in-patient treatment at the St. Vincent Peyton Manning Children's Hospital. To show her appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Hospital for the wonderful care Drew received while there, Karen created and implemented a gift-giving program for the 60 patients who were receiving in-patient care there over the holidays. For the past 10 years, during the holiday season, Karen and her children purchased, assembled, and delivered gift baskets to 60 children patients at the St. Vincent Peyton Manning Children's Hospital. Because Karen's children brought so much joy to her and Karen brought so much joy and love to other children, Danielle and her family could not think of a better way to honor Karen's memory than to support and assist Stephanie and Drew in their commendable desire and plan to continue their mother's annual gift-basket program.

It is Danielle and her family's hope that by joining together as a team, we can grow the program every year to include and provide gift baskets for more, if not all, of the children who must spend their holidays in the hospital. May Karen's beautiful light and acts of lovingkindness be for a blessing.

CHAI NOTES DID YOU EVER SING IN CHAI NOTES?DID YOUR SON/DAUGHTER SING IN CHAI NOTES?Cantor Roger started a children’s choir thirty-eight years ago to enrich Kabbalat Shabbat, Family Night, and holiday worship and introduce the youngest members of IHC to the beauty of Jewish worship. We are bringing together former and current Chai Notes from the last four decades to help Cantor Janice “Go Out On A Chai Note” with a special erev Shabbat service on Friday, April 21.

We are asking Chai Notes to sing a special song written for the service in honor of Cantor Janice.

If you, your son, daughter, grandchild, or family member has every been a part of Chai Notes, would you be part of this tribute Chai Notes choir to honor Cantor Janice. There will only be one song to learn—you may even remember the melody; but, the words will be new. (Sort of like a Jewish version of Mr. Holland’s Opus!). Parents or grandparents—please pass the invitation along!

Chai Notes has introduced two generations of our youngest IHC community to Jewish music, liturgy, and t’fillah. Chai Notes has touched the souls of children, parents, and families for decades. Your participation on April 21 is an opportunity to touch one more heart and say todah rabah, thank you, to Cantor Janice for sharing her time, talents, and love of Jewish music—and especially our children, all these years.

If you can be part of our special tribute Chai Note choir, call Brandon Roger at 317-496-4995 or email [email protected].

SISTERHOODKaren Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected]

OUR MISSIONTo join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community and ourselves.

The glow from our congregation’s 160th celebration has barely dimmed and Sisterhood is getting ready to celebrate another milestone! IHC Temple Sisterhood turns 100 in October 2017!It’s our birthday and Sisterhood enrollment is underway! Here is how these two seemingly separate ideas are related. To celebrate our 100th birthday, we have set the goal of having all the women of IHC join in Sisterhood. Why is it important to create a group just for the women of IHC? The mission of our IHC Sisterhood is, “To join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community, and ourselves.” We are stronger when we work together and when we are together we can bring lots of light to the world around us at IHC and beyond its walls. The common ground we have is being women and being a part of IHC. When we grow our connections to one another, we fulfill the promise of temple life, developing bonds of friendship and fellowship. Sisterhood is a unique organization because we are not only and arm of the temple. We are an affiliate of the national Women of Reform Judaism. The WRJ’s mission is to, “… strengthen the voice of women worldwide and empower them to create caring communities, nurture congregations, cultivate personal and spiritual growth, and advocate for and promote progressive Jewish values.” When you become part of IHC Temple Sisterhood, you reach out to the worldwide Jewish community. Your Sisterhood board is planning for a special Centennial celebration in the fall. This will be in addition to the celebrations we are sponsoring and supporting for our Cantor Janice Roger as she retires from IHC after 40 years of service. Look for information on these programs in the coming months and please plan to join with us!In Sisterhood, Karen Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President
