Our group travelled to Gatlinburg Dec. 29
th – 31
st as planned. It was a
great time, lots of great music, teaching and the corn dogs and caramel apples was a big hit!! It was very cold standing in line outside waiting to get into the concerts but no one froze too bad ha, ha. It was worth
it to get seats close to the stage so the next night the kids were ready to get in line early again, lol. We all got our steps in that weekend, woke early and went to bed late because we didn’t want to miss a thing! I love when we have trips -- the kids seem to bond even closer with one another. There is something about being in a stadium with 10,000 young people worshipping the Lord through music and praise. We left there with our cups full again, it was a great time! January is almost over which means it’s just that much closer to Spring. Praise the Lord!! We are doing ok being cooped up and
really enjoying the gym. The sound is so much better and the lights --wow what a difference those have made! We really appreciate
all the work that is being done to make it better.
Our lesson right now is being taught by Bro. Jim on, “Angels.” We have had a few parents who haven’t heard the lesson. After
hearing about their purpose and their power, it really got them thinking and asking questions. Bro. Jim keeps reminding us not to
focus on them but to know they are there to help us through our earthly walk. Next we are going to hear about the fallen angels.
Though he has only given us a little bit of info about them, It has already opened our eyes. The devil doesn’t have as much power
over us as we had originally thought! It has just been a great time of learning and bonding with Bro. Jim!
If you know of any youth that is looking for a group send them our way, 6PM - Wednesday nights – teaching, Sunday nights – food
and games (on occasion this is cancelled but we give warning before hand).
On February 8th
the first deposit for Crossing Camp - $75.00 is due. This is will guarantee your spot so don’t forget to get that turned
in to us.
In Christ,
Trena & Lance Gregory
From Your Pastor
Jim Ewing The calendar’s about turn to February ... can you believe how
fast the days go by? As we head into 2017 we just celebrated
the first anniversary of our new Ministry Assistant, Jan Moore.
She has made some incredible contributions to our office
activity. When you see her ... let her know how much you
appreciate all she’s done to help make it better!
Inclement Weather Procedures – February is a typical time for
bad weather. We have three mechanisms in place to let you
know about schedule changes: Our website which is
(www.calvertfbc.org); our Facebook page (First Baptist
Calvert City), and Snowman 6 (WPSD Channel 6). If you
have any emergencies you may call our Deacon of the Week
or you can call me. We’ll do our best to respond as quickly as
possible. If you’re unsure about the impact of the weather on
service schedules check here before you head out the door!
Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) – We are
considering being a host for this valuable training series. If
you are interested in attending, contact Les Evans or Bro. Jim.
You can also call the church office. You can find out more
about FPU on line at www.daveramsey.com/.
Pizza & Bowling – We’re planning a get-together on Sat, Feb
4 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Lunch will be at Pizza Inn and
bowling at Cardinal Lanes ... both in Paducah. You can sign
up on the sheet outside the church office, in your Sunday
School class, or call the church office at 270-395-4600. Meal
is pay-as-you-go; games are $4.75 each.
AARP Smart Driver Course – Feb. 2, 9 am to 1 pm – FBC
will be hosting this informative course on driving safety given
by Bob Hines. Many insurance companies offer discounts to
those who complete the course. There is a modest fee for the
course which you pay when you arrive. For more information
go online at www.aarpdriversafety.org. Call the church office
to sign up as seating is limited.
The Building Fund - At our January 2016 Membership
Meeting we voted to keep the building fund active and split
the gifts 50-50 between the Activities Building refurbishing
effort and the new sign project. Since that time we have saved
what we believe are sufficient funds for our signs so at our
January 2017 membership meeting, the church approved a
plan to put all building fund donations directly toward the
activities building refurbishment effort. You may still
designate specifically to either fund if you prefer.
Activities Building Update – We’re still working on the
building! Ray Tucker, Dale Smith, and Gerry Poague have
installed some new LED lights in the main gym area that not
only increase overall brightness but they will last years longer.
Also, we’re about to get to work on the second floor of the
building which is in Phase 2. More to come on this.
Reformation Celebration - It was 500 years ago that what we
now know as “The Reformation” began. In 1517, a German
theology professor and priest named Martin Luther challenged
the Roman Catholic Church by publishing his 95 Theses (or
issues) and nailed the list to the door of the Castle Church in
Wittenberg, Germany. Luther saw the church drifting away
from core biblical truths such as the authority of Scripture and
the grace found in Christ through faith alone. The church’s
view of salvation had become centered on man’s efforts rather
than on God’s grace.
Last month we talked about the first of the five major changes
brought about by the Reformation: Sola Scriptura, the idea
that Scripture Alone is the only source for what is necessary to
know about God and His gift of salvation and grace. The
second major change was the idea of Sola Gratia, or Grace
Alone. There was a time in the early history of the church
when God’s grace was seen as something man could earn or
that the church could sell. Grace is God’s unmerited favor ...
and it’s given because God is loving and merciful, not because
we have done anything or offered to merit that grace.
That also means that God’s grace is nothing we can ever lose!
Before He saved us God already knew the worst we could be
and He chose to forgive us anyway! The arrival of Jesus into
our world was God’s way of doing for us what we could not
do for ourselves. Brandon Smith put it this way: “God
Incarnate had to come here to live the life we could not live
and die the death we should’ve died.”
May the grace of God be your constant companion!
Together in Him,
Bro. (Dr) Jim

Although it’s cold and a little gray outside, it’s warm and
sunny with the smiling, happy faces of our children at First
Baptist. It has been a great month!
Thanks to Jeff and Sarah Peck for working with the children
on service projects. This was a wonderful three months and
the projects were great. Our children were happy to do the
projects we did. They want to thank the church family for
donating all the hats and mittens for one of the projects.
Aaron and Crystal Smith will be starting “Deep Sea
Discovery” with our J.U.M.P. kids on February 1st. This will
help the children to build upon their relationship with God and
also continue service with a purpose. We are excited!
AWANA clubs have started the New Year off with many
things. The boys and girls donated 24 boxes of cereal to our
food pantry. They had a great time at snow night (without the
snow) and silly shoe night. (See our picture from silly shoe
night on Facebook.) On the last night of the month, we went to
the islands. It was plenty warm inside at our island, although it
was cold outside. We have lots planned for February with
sports night, M&M night, pajama party, and 70’s night. The
children are also earning lots of awards when they learn their
verses. Keep up the good work! Our AWANA leaders are
doing a great job! Take a few minutes when you see them and
let them know it.
We’re excited about our “Pizza & Bowling” get together.
Come out and join us. It will be lots of fun!!!
