1 February 2018 FROM VALENTINES TO APRIL FOOLS It has struck me as interesting that, in this year of 2018, the season of Lent begins on Valentine’s Day—which is Ash Wednesday—and concludes with the celebra- tion of Easter on April Fool’s Day. The last time those observances coincided in that way was 1956, and these dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter will coincide again in 2029. Having these dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter pointed me to the affirmation of the amazing love of God that is revealed in Jesus’ death on the cross. The cross is God’s valentine, as it were, that is revealed to mortal, sinful human beings. The theme of Ash Wednesday is that God is merciful to us—in the midst of the dark- ness caused by sin and death in our lives. As we journey through Lent, we will focus on the Cross of Calvary, where Jesus died for the sake of the world. Yet our destination will be the empty tomb of East- er. St. Paul wrote in I Corinthians that “the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” If the message about the cross is foolishness, how much more is the promise of Resurrection a message of foolishness. It is this message that makes us fools for the sake of Christ (Paul’s words), trusting in the power of Jesus to give abundant and eternal life. So we will move from Valentines to April Fools during this coming season of Lent. The love of God will accompany us, reminding us of our need for God’s grace and pointing us to the promise of eternal life in Christ. May we set out with good cour- age, as fools for Christ! FROM VALENTINES TO APRIL FOOLS

It has struck me as interesting that, in this year of 2018, the season of Lent begins

on Valentine’s Day—which is Ash Wednesday—and concludes with the celebra-

tion of Easter on April Fool’s Day. The last time those observances coincided in

that way was 1956, and these dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter will coincide

again in 2029.

Having these dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter pointed me to the affirmation of

the amazing love of God that is revealed in Jesus’ death on the cross. The cross is

God’s valentine, as it were, that is revealed to mortal, sinful human beings. The

theme of Ash Wednesday is that God is merciful to us—in the midst of the dark-

ness caused by sin and death in our lives.

As we journey through Lent, we will focus on the Cross of Calvary, where Jesus

died for the sake of the world. Yet our destination will be the empty tomb of East-

er. St. Paul wrote in I Corinthians that “the message about the cross is foolishness

to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

If the message about the cross is foolishness, how much more is the promise of

Resurrection a message of foolishness. It is this message that makes us fools for

the sake of Christ (Paul’s words), trusting in the power of Jesus to give abundant

and eternal life.

So we will move from Valentines to April Fools during this coming season of Lent.

The love of God will accompany us, reminding us of our need for God’s grace and

pointing us to the promise of eternal life in Christ. May we set out with good cour-

age, as fools for Christ!

Bethany Lutheran Church Council Meeting- December 13, 2017

Present: Brandie Nelson, James Nelson, Marlin Johnson, Josh Nelson, Terri Nelson, Matt Stula, Pastor Mai, Phil Hett,

Kathey Bengtson, Mary Parker, Steve Gustafson, Bill Buschbom, Justin Mader, Amy Roraback Absent: Merle Larson

Minutes and Financial Report The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed. It was MSC to approve the

minutes. The financial report is attached and was reviewed by Matt Stula. Contributions during November were ap-

proximately $2,500 over budget. Total income for November was approximately $3,100 greater than November 2016.

Total expenses for November were approximately $4,600 greater than November 2016. Contributions YTD are ap-

proximately $800 less than budgeted while total expenses YTD are approximately $2,900 over budget. It was MSC to

approve the financial report as submitted.

Informational Reports: Pastor's report is attached. Pastor is preparing for many services during Advent. Phil Hett

will be continuing his seminary training as well as starting in January as part-time Chaplain at Bethany Home. Pastor

was able to see both of his children and grandchildren at Thanksgiving and plan to see them again after Christmas.

Finance Committee -met on December 4. They discussed interest monies, CD's and did an investment review.

TACOL-Pastor Mai is current president of TACOL. The Thrift Store set a record income during the month of Novem-

ber at $21,000. We are very thankful for the manager of The Thrift Store, Rose Erickson, and the many volunteers

who work with her. TACOL continues to give assistance to parties with hardships through various types of vouchers,

utility assistance, Christmas food baskets, etc.

Old Business: Communications up-date-Matt replaced the speaker amplifier and several people have commented

on how much clearer the speakers are and how well the sound is coming across on TV for the Sunday morning ser-

vice. Property Concerns-Justin reported that it had been suggested a second sink be added in the women’s bathroom

across from the church office. Discussion followed. Plumbing would be very expensive to add a drain along with costs

for a new sink, loss of counter space, cost of counter top, faucet, paper towel dispenser. It was suggested that for big-

ger events that take place in our Church we could make a sign that says that there are ''additional restrooms down-

stairs. “It was decided not to pursue making any changes at this time. The property committee is recommending the

spruce tree in the courtyard area be removed and replaced with something similar. The tree is pretty much dead and

needs to be removed. There are memorial gifts available for replacing the tree with something similar. The property

committee is also looking at the pine trees in the south parking lot that are diseased. It was MSC to have a specialist

look at the spruce tree to determine removal and replacement. We would ask the specialist to also look at the

pine trees for recommendation on removal. Melanie attended a safety seminar at the Covenant Church. We dis-

cussed further the security system bids. Marlin has the bid from Brian Hopp in McPherson however did not have it with

him. We will review further at the next meeting. Central Kansas Contractors submitted a bid for replacing the concrete

flat area and steps in front of Church for around $4,200. It seemed high so will get another bid. There is a raised side-

walk area in front of parsonage that we can maybe repair ourselves. Brandie is working with her committee on a Sexu-

al Harassment Policy. Consecration Sunday up-date-81 pledges have been turned in so far which is down from 93 in

2016. The total of the pledges is $220,000 which is down $20,000 from last year which will affect budget in 2018. 150th

Anniversary Committee will meet in January to start planning.

We will welcome new council members at our January 10 meeting. Erica Kruckenberg, Krista Harris, Ken Branch,

Erika Lysell and Carrie Nelson. Thanks to our retiring members for their years serving on the Council- Joy Everhart,

James E. Nelson, and Justin Mader. Council members will be installed on Sunday, January 14 at both services.

New Business: The Organ Policy for Bethany is attached. MSC to adopt the policy as written with a revised date

put on policy for reference. Social Ministry Committee submitted Noisy Offering designations for 2018. It was

MSC to adopt the recommendations as submitted. It was suggested that at the bottom of the list the additional

Sunday donations that the Council adopted in the last few months be added for reference. Josh will see that gets add-

ed. The Memorial Committee is reviewing monies still in Memorial Funds.

7

First Time Discussion

The first draft of the budget has been attached. Matt reviewed it with Council. It was MSC to approve Pastors hous-

ing allowance in the amount of $6,000. The Annual Congregational Meeting will be on January 28. Report dead-

line is January 8. TACOL representatives from Bethany Church are Josh Nelson and Duane Fredrickson. Josh af-

firmed he will continue and Pastor will check with Dr. Fredrickson. Phil Hett has accepted a 20 hr. position at Bethany

Home since Pastor Buschbom will be retiring on 12-31. We are glad for Phil and his appointment to this position.

Lent starts on February 14th with Ash Wednesday. It is also Valentine’s Day. What a

fitting day to start the season of Lent! Valentine’s Day is the secular holiday associated

with love. With this unique opportunity of combining the sacred and the secular, we

have a chance to ponder on God’s love and what it means on Ash Wednesday. Further-

more, what it means for our life as we live out our faith in a secular world. What does it mean? It means on Ash Wednesday that we can reflect on the greatest gift

of all, Jesus Christ. The greatest of gifts is God’s love poured out on the cross. It is a

love so great to die for our sins, so powerful to conquer death, and so amazing to give us

life eternal. God’s love is love beyond compare. We receive God’s love, not out of

merit or earnings, but free. It is grace! It is a gift, given to us sinners. On Ash Wednes-

day, we humbly accept this gift. Love is also a gift that God gives us to share with others. We call our family and friends

“loved ones” because our relationship with them is defined by love. Love is measured

by what it produces. God’s love is liberating, redeeming, and forgiving. At best, the

love we share with others is a tiny reflection of God’s perfect love. As a gift from God,

it is meant to be modeled after God’s love for us. St. Paul put it this way. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who,

though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be

exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human like-

ness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the

point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5-8. God’s blessings to you this Season of Lent as we humbly receive and share God’s love.

Mexico Mission Trip - We plan to make our 4th trip to Puerto Penasco this year, March 16 -

24, 2018. Commitments are due Feb. 4, with a $225.00 deposit due on Feb. 15. We will be

working with Salina’s Trinity United Methodist, (Lee Larson’s group) to build a house, and

work at Two Fish, a Soup Kitchen.

Look for the clothesline fundraiser in Trinity Hall and Fellowship Hall. Consider paying for

some building supplies or food for Two Fish Soup Kitchen. Take a tab from the clothesline,

put it with your donation in the envelope and leave in the offering plate or the church office.

There will be a bake sale during coffee hour on Sunday, Feb. 11; there will be a Soup Supper

Lenten Meal on March 21. Join us in suppor ting this exciting ministry. Please talk to

Phil Hett, Rhea Mader, or Joyce Peterson if you’re interested in supporting the trip financially.

Lent begins on Feb. 14; the word Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word that means “spring” or “springtime”. Taken literally, the word means that this is the time of the year when the days lengthen. This season of the church year is a time of preparation, reflection, growth, and change. As God’s people take time to learn more about God and their relationship to God and to others, the season before Easter can be seen as the springtime of the soul, a time of growth in faith and a time to nurture the faith that is already theirs. Purple is the color associated with Lent and is used in churches that observe liturgical traditions. Purple is a solemn color, reminiscent of royalty and repentance. If reflects the serious and somber nature of this time in the life of the church. (Before and After Easter –Aug./Fortress)

Winter Sunday School is here! We are using the Spark Classroom curriculum for our three year olds through 8

th grades. This series walks through key Old Testament and New Testament

Bible stories each year, in a two-year cycle. The Old Testament stories are presented in the fall quarter and the New Testament stories are presented in the winter and spring quarters.

TWO NEW BOOKS

A brand new “must read” is now available in our library: Katharina & Martin Luther:

The Radical Marriage of a Runaway Nun and a Renegade Monk by Michelle DeRusha.

Even if Reformation 500 is over, you haven’t finished reading everything you should if

you haven’t read this book. DeRusha’s book has been recommended everywhere in Lu-

theran publications—and with good reason.

It will hold your attention, I promise. “This unique biography tells the riveting story of

two remarkable people and their extraordinary relationship, offering refreshing insights

into Christian history and illuminating the Luthers’ profound impact on the institution

of marriage, the effects of which still reverberate today.” (quoted from the flyleaf).

Thanks to Jan Malpert who donated this book to our library.

Another donation turned up in “Miss Charlotte’s Place” a few weeks ago: Lucia Morn-

ing in Sweden by Ewa Rydaker, with illustrations by Carina Stahlberg. I found it on the

table with a sticker inside the cover that reads “This book was donated in memory of

Charlotte Ternstrom.” A thoroughly delightful book, it incorporates the legend of St.

Lucia with a story of how one family celebrates Lucia Day in Sweden each year. Also

included are patterns for Lucia and Starboy costumes as well as recipes for Lucia buns

and pepparkakor.

If anyone knows who donated Lucia Morning in Sweden, please let me know. We cer-

tainly appreciate having it to share with our young readers.

Mystery and Ambiguity

Holly Johnson

Perhaps you have seen the most recent issue of Living Lutheran magazine. As always,

it’s full of interesting articles and information. I always look forward to every issue.

This month’s edition included an article entitled “Themes in Mark,” (Living Lutheran,

Vol. 2, No. 10, January 2018, p. 44) and one paragraph particularly captured my

thoughts:

“Mark’s Gospel is imbued with a sense of mystery and ambiguity. Jesus doesn’t

mind leaving people in the dark (4:10-12), nor does Mark feel any compulsion to

sort everything out for us. In particular, Jesus speaks about “the secret (or mys-

tery) of the kingdom of God. (4:11); he tells people not to make his miracles

known (1:43-44; 5:43; 7:36; 8:26); and his very identity remains a mystery to

most throughout the story (1:27; 2:7; 4:41; 6:2-3; 14-16; 8:27-28). The effect

seems to be to focus attention on his climactic death and resurrection, for it is on-

ly through the cross that Jesus’ true nature and purpose becomes apparent

(15:39).

I immediately thought of our Stephen Ministry work at Bethany. It is natural for any-

one to wonder about the “whys and how’s” of life’s difficulties. Why me? Why did it

happen? How can I explain it? How will I overcome or accept it? How can I find my

way through it to the future?

In our training, we Stephen Ministers are warned about trying to explain a situation or

to speculate on its outcomes. We are trained not to offer advice. Our job is to embrace

the mystery and ambiguity of life, just as Mark’s Gospel reflects.

Our job is to listen and support. We keep our eyes on the cross, not on the solving of a

problem. We pray for strength and faith for our care receivers. It is up to God to heal,

to resolve, to see us through the storm. The answers will come through the true nature

of Jesus, through His purpose.

As the author of the article explains: It is only through the cross that Jesus’ true nature

and purpose becomes apparent. So we rest in Jesus’ arms, and offer that refuge to our

friends as we care for them.

12

On Sunday, February 18 we of Bethany Lutheran Church will celebrate

our partnership with our “church camp,” Camp Tomah Shinga. Bethany

Church has had a long-term relationship with the camp, which is the church in outdoor

ministry. On February 18, Camp Director Ben Fulton will be present to talk about the

camp’s ministry at both morning services. He will also present the forum at 9:00 a.m.

on that day. Plan to attend worship on February 18, and learn about what is happening

at “our” camp. Thanks for your ongoing support of the camp and the campers from our

congregation!
