Literary classics are classics because they have stood the test of time. They have dazzled generations of readers with their compelling writing as well as with their approaches to universal themes. Each new age discovers in them not just fascinating layers of meaning but also fresh relevance. How to Fall in Love with Classics is an exciting, new NLB lecture series that celebrates the classics. 2 February: George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four

9 February: Rex Shelley’s The Shrimp People

Part of a four-part series.

So You Want to be an Author – The Self-Publishing Route

2.00 pm – 3.00 pm Programme Zone, Marine Parade Public Library

With the tools available today and a more level playing field, authors nowadays find that it may be more lucrative for them to self-publish rather than publish with a commercial publisher. This one-hour talk will demystify the process of self-publishing; and help potential authors to navigate through the field of processes and freelancers (editors and typesetters).

Topics covered:

• How to self-publish

• Editorial and publishing process

• Dealing with typesetters, layout artists, printers

• Marketing and promotion of book

About the trainer:

Trained as a lawyer, Norainni graduated from NUS Law School in 1987 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 1988. Her passion lay in publishing and she entered the world of legal, regulatory and tax publishing thereafter. A content development person by nature, Norainni now helps aspiring authors to self-publish, taking them on a journey from ideation to manuscript and onwards to published work, whether in print or digital form.

[A Librarian's World at Public Libraries] Making Sense of Poetry

5.00 pm – 6.00 pm Multi-Purpose Room, Central Public Library

Ever wondered what librarians do? In this series of monthly talks, find out what makes our librarians tick as they share highlights of their work from the collections of the National Library and Public Libraries. Join us for a journey through the senses – with Joey Chin.

Why does poetry matter? How can we appreciate it? What are the ways in which we can use our senses to understand a form that is rich in language, and sometimes, deeply personal?

Join Associate Librarian Joey Chin as she explores the ways to understand poetry and how writers engage with the senses of seeing, hearing and touch through titles held in the libraries. She will also be talking about form as discipline, exploring Anne Carson’s Nox and Xu Bing’s works, alongside examples in her own practice.

Writing the City Writers’ Group2.00 pm – 4.00 pm Programme Zone, Toa Payoh Public Library

“In Transit: An Anthology from Singapore on Airports and Air Travel”

5.00 pm – 6.30 pm Activities Room, Bukit Batok Public Library

Almost every Singapore poet in the ‘90s and early 2000s has penned at least one airplane-themed poem. One of the editors, Yu-Mei Balasingamchow, decided that the topic of travel and flight was perfect for an anthology. In 2014, the editors put out a call for submissions. They received 95 entries, of which 31 were shortlisted. Works from writers such as Ng Yi-sheng, Marc Nair, Alvin Pang and Stephanie Ye made the cut. The pieces explore deeper issues of home, identity and what “Singapore” meant at this particular point in time. The book contains stories written from the point of view of a “trolley uncle”, a security guard, a janitor and a Bangladeshi construction worker.

Meet editor Yu-Mei Balasingamchow who will share her experience of this compilation.

[ALT TXT] Concrete/Visual Poetry: Exploring the Shape of Texts

1.30 pm – 3.00 pm Make, library@orchard

Where did concrete poetry come from? What is the history behind this genre and how has this form evolved from its heyday in the mid-1900’s? How does one read a poem where its shape garners as much complex meaning as its language?

Join poet Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingde as he talks about this quaint union of literary and artistic sensibilities and receive a compilation of concrete/visual poems, curated specially for this workshop.

“ALT TXT” is a series of talks and workshops for youths and adults organised by NLB which explores the intersection of literature and narratives through visual and conceptual art.

Map your multiple selves to develop unique ways to relate your experiences through experimental words, images and diagrams.

About the facilitator:

Michael Lee is a Singapore-based artist and curator who researches urban memory and fiction, especially the contexts and implications of loss. He transforms his observations into objects, diagrams, situations, curations or texts. His work Notes Towards a Museum of Cooking Pot Bay (2011) is a large-scale mind map of a hypothetical museum for the neighbourhood around Telok Blangah MRT Station, which traverses time, space, reality and fiction. He is currently a resident artist at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore at Gillman Barracks.

“ALT TXT” is a series of talks and workshops for youths and adults organised by NLB which explores the intersection of literature and narratives through visual and conceptual art.

Lillian Boxfish Takes a WalkKathleen RooneyNew York: St Martin’s Press, 2017Call No. English ROO

W hen Lillian Boxfish finishes dinner at Grimaldi’s on New Year’s Eve (as she does every year), she

decides to take a long walk in Manhattan, to enjoy the sights and places that are so familiar to her. She feels in her, ‘one last adventure to round out the year’. She walks to Oscar’s Delmonico’s, the legendary steakhouse. She feels that by the time she gets there, she would have worked up an appetite to have a second meal. So she says goodbye to Alberto, the second-generation owner-proprietor of the North Italian restaurant, and begins her walk.

This delightful novel, based on the life of a true pioneering feminist, Margaret Fishback, is charming and fascinating. Lillian is an endearing character many women would hope to emulate, although not the brazen manner in which she confronts three muggers at the end of her walk. Was it because by that time she felt that she had nothing to lose since she had no more money in her purse but only the mink coat on her? What was the true motive that led to the deal she made with the muggers?

Between the time she leaves Grimaldi’s and her encounter with the muggers, Lillian Boxfish tells the story of her life, beginning in 1926 when she arrives in Manhattan. Her

career with R. H. Macy’s is sensational and she becomes an advertising icon, drawing admirers and jealousy, perhaps not in equal measure; but her relationship and dialogues with her colleague Olive Dodd are most witty. Then she falls in love with a colleague, Max (Massimiliano Gianluca Caputo), from the purchasing department. When she becomes pregnant, Macy’s, consistent with the time, terminates her employment, and throws her a farewell party on 16 January 1942. She gives birth to a son, Johnny Gianluca.

Lillian finds time during her walks at lunch time to compose poetry. Eventually, she becomes a published poet. She not only remembers her successes, as the top advertising copywriter, highest paid female in New York, and poet, but she also remembers vividly the trauma of her husband’s infidelity and how it sent her spiraling into a sanitorium for the clinically depressed. Her recovery is heroic and heartwarming.

In the course of her walk from Grimaldi’s to Delmonico’s, she revisits the sites and scenes of her life in Manhattan. She explains why her sojourn in the suburbs ends quickly and the reason for her return to the city. The reader will easily be infatuated with the Manhattan that Lillian

describes, and enamoured with the people she meets along the way; strangers who become friends – not just during that walk in 1984, but across time – people like Maritza. She meets Maritza in St. Vincent’s hospital. She is there for treatment, and Maritza to give birth. Then there is the young and vibrant Wendy, the image Lillian probably has of herself. Wendy is an avid photographer. Wendy’s relationship with Peter takes Lillian a long time to comprehend, but in the end, she realises that there are other perspectives to the young couple’s relationship compared to the one she had with Max. And, of course, her ruminations include the time she spends with her best friend, Helen McGoldrick. And she talks about her divorce – one of the reasons she had decided to go to Delmonico’s that night.

Lillian recalls what Manhattan was like in 1926, and compares it to what it is in 1984. It was to be a long cold night when Lillian started off, but the walk, and the story, has a warm and glowing end.

A lovely story; a lovely woman.

Inspired by the “Women in Refrigerators” website where Gail Simone and other feminist writers discuss the role of women in comics, The Refrigerator Monologues is a refreshing take on how women have been used to fuel the plot lines of male heroes. Told from the points of view of six women who are recast from familiar superhero girlfriends or heroines; their backstories are fleshed out and we learn how these women are so much more than plot fodder. This book will change your view of superhero fiction and open your eyes to the treatment of women in comic books, and is definitely recommended for fans of comic books, especially those seeking a different perspective of the world of superheroes and caped crusaders.

The Remedies, Katharine Towers’s second collection of poems, focuses on human relationships with nature. Within just three chapters, the 51 poems contained are generally brief, but each will strike a chord and resonate with the reader’s experiences in life.

The poems in Chapter Two revolve around flower remedies for different kinds of human maladies. These remedies are inspired by Dr Edward Bach, who in the 1930’s linked flowers to various human afflictions. For example, consider the poem “Aspen”, which Towers considers a remedy for “fear of the unknown”. This is an apt comparison as the Trembling Aspen is a tree whose leaves are known to quake in the wind!

The Remedies can be read in one sitting and is a welcome respite for anyone wanting to take a break from their busy life; it is a literary, poetic remedy for the soul.

The sudden death of Sheryl Sandberg’s husband left her and her two young children in limbo. In this practical book about overcoming setbacks and building one’s resilience ‘muscle’, Sandberg opens up to her readers about her initial loss and sorrow, and brings them through the process of moving forward and overcoming her hardships. Her responses to the trauma of her loss make a moving read. At the same time, she provides insights on helping others in crisis, developing compassion for ourselves, as well as creating resilient families and communities. Though the topics dealt by Sandberg and psychologist Adam Grant are often weighty, the book is never dreary. Packed with research and anecdotes about people who had suffered loss but found ways to live their lives with hope, Option B strikes an uplifting and optimistic tone.

Short stories are an ideal medium for recording the socio-cultural history of a budding nation, especially a country with more than 28 dialect groups such as Indonesia. This anthology of short stories comprises of 46 stories, some of which are penned by celebrated Indonesian authors such as Prameodya Ananta Toer, Archdiat K Mihardja, and Mochtar Lubis. All of them were painstakingly collected and translated from Bahasa Indonesia to English.

From simple tales communicated orally to nationalistic pieces that echo the hopes of a developing nation, these stories transcend ethnicity, gender, class and ideology to chronicle the experiences of the Indonesian people up to the New Order era in 1965.

Page-turners and well translated, these stories capture effectively Indonesian thoughts and inspirations on nation building.
