Welcome back Salina Country Club,
I hope everyone enjoyed their New Year celebrations
and January travels! We were thrilled to reopen on the
15th as the clubhouse was lonely place during the
closure. Thank you for your patience during this time as it
allowed us to accomplish many maintenance tasks
difficult to complete during operations.
A glimpse of warm weather? We will take it! Golf and
football are the way to start your February. We hope you
plan to join us on Sunday for the Super Bowl!
It has been a very busy month with membership sign ups. The Board of Directors is on a
pursuit to a membership drive. It was kicked off with the release of a Junior Sponsor
membership for those under 35 years of age. Make sure you take a look at Abby’s new
membership listing to see the success we’ve had so far!
As we enter February, we are starting to update calendars for summer programming,
booking entertainment, and planning ahead for the holiday seasons. You can find a lot of
information in advance through the online calendar, but do not hesitate to reach out with
any questions.
Thank you for your continuous support. We look forward to a great February with you.
Best regards,
Chris Nickell

One more month to go!! With February here, we are only
one month away from more consistent weather (hopefully).
With the winter we had this past year, we have a lot of peo-
ple who are giddy to get on the golf course.
The 2020 Tournament Calendar will be finalized in the next
week or two. If you are in need of dates to put on your
calendar please feel free to call and we can give you some
tentative dates.
Winter Cart Policy: During the winter months please keep
carts in the rough as much as possible and use the 90
degree rule when crossing the fairway. This will help the
condition of the fairways going into spring.
Club Storage: Winter or Summer, the worst thing you can do to your golf clubs is store them
in the trunk of your car. Extreme cold and hot temperatures can cause the club heads to
loosen and will deteriorate grips over time. If you are not currently taking advantage of
SCC club storage, consider it for 2020. Club storage charge for the year is $150 which
includes storage, cleaning after each round, handling of bags to and from carts, and minor
club repairs.
We are looking forward to another fun and eventful year at Salina Country Club. We have
some fun new events planned, as well as some old events with new formats.
As the weather gets nicer, please call the Pro Shop to make your tee times
for either weekday play or the weekends. We will have plenty of availa-
ble tee times!
Hope everyone had a wonderful January and it should be a better
February!

Welcome to February, Salina country Club!
The winter weather this year has been typical for Kansas, 60
one day and snow the next. The rollercoaster weather
pattern has been good in the fact that we have been getting
some moisture.
It has not been good for golfing and hopefully that will
change and allow everyone to enjoy the course, and for the
crew and I to start the fairway conversion project without
delay.
The start date is planned for February 17th with #1. The first
hole will be played as a par-3 while we work on the first half of
the fairway. After we finish that half, we will close the hole and finish the rest of the fairway.
The next step is to water the new turf for a couple days and when dry play can resume that
hole will be cart path only until the sod has rooted down and is actively growing. That
process depends on the weather but we will aid the grass with proper nutrition and water
to help speed the process as much as possible.
After #1, we will close #2 and finish the entire fairway at one time. After #2 we will move to
#16 so we can connect the fairways with the same process. We will close #16 while
working there for the safety of the crew and to make sure all golfers are not in danger of
equipment.
Once we finish #16 we plan to rope off the new sod and allow cart traffic up to the new
turf as weather permits. The goal for the entire project is to be completed in four weeks
from start to finish. That should give us time to patch in the seams and complete everything
so we may have the same success as the other fairways we have sodded.
We are all excited to get this project started as this
should be the last complete set of fairways we will
have to complete.
Thank you,
Chris R.

Long time Salina Country Club member Bill
Conrey has been chosen by the KGA as the
2019 recipient of the Virgil Parker Award.
Bill has served on the Kansas Golf Association
Board of Directors representing Salina Country
Club since 2005 and was the Kansas Golf
Association president in 2007. Bill has also
served as a KGA Rules Official for more than
25 years, served on the USGA Public Links
Championship committee from 2010 to 2014
and on the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship committee from 2015 to present.
Created in 1997, the Virgil Parker Award is given at the discretion of the KGA’s Executive
Committee to those individuals that have made an impact on golf and golfers in Kansas
through significant volunteer efforts. The award is named after a man that was a volunteer
leader of the KGA even during a successful amateur golfer career in the Wichita area.
Virgil Parker was an expert of the Rules of Golf, a president of the KGA, and a member of
the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame.
“Bill’s selfless commitment to golf and promoting the amateur game in Kansas are the
embodiment of what the Virgil Parker Award stands for,” said Casey Old, KGA Interim
Executive Director. “We are proud to recognize his countless days of service and giving
back to the game that we all love.”
Congratulations Bill! Thank you for your years of representing SCC and contributions to
Kansas golf!
SCC Shoutout!
