H ello members! My name Chef Jerry McGuire. I am a Missouri native, growing

up just about five and a half hours down the road in Camdenton. I am 51 years of age and married to my high school sweetheart. Together we have raised five children, four girls and one boy. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS.

In 1987, I fulfilled my four year Chef’s Apprenticeship at Marriotts, Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO. From 1983-1987, before joining John Q. Hammons Hotels, where I spent 10 years. In 1997, I worked in Ohio at a private resort for four years, before moving to the mountains of North Carolina to work at a private country club for two years. Then I was off to Little Rock, AR for four years at yet, another private country club. Finally, I returned home to Missouri to assume the helm of Sedalia Country Club's culinary department, where I spent the last six years. I am looking forward to meeting all of you personally in the near future and putting my culinary stamp on Salina Country Club, making it the premiere club in central Kansas.

Welcome our New Chef! Jerry McGuire

Friendly Reminder: The Club’s golf course is provided for our golfer’s enjoyment. For your safety, please keep your pets off the course. The designated area to walk your pets is the fitness trail on River Road. Thank you.

Message from Assistant Manager, Tracy Green

W hat a great summer we are having at the SCC! 4th of July was

full of fun as always. Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed the day at the

Club. Jerome continued the tradition of going off the high dive in his suit to the cheers of everyone in attendance. Welcome to Chef Jerry McGuire - please feel free to stop in the kitchen anytime and say hello. Jerry will be out and around the dining rooms and hopes to greet and meet everyone. Although it’s the middle of summer, December isn't too far off! I have several dates available for your holiday parties. Whether business or family, I

would be happy to secure a date for your holiday festivities. Please continue to contact me with all of your questions, concerns and comments. Enjoy the remainder of your summer and we'll see you all around the Club. Stay cool!

W ow! How time flies when we’re having fun! July 4th has come and

gone. For all of those who were at the club – and it looked like most everyone – it was a great day of fun. Plenty of activity at the pool! Thanks to Greg Maring and his team for all the games and excitement. As you know, I protected the traditions of Salina Country Club and made the big leap off the high dive – in full business attire! Remind me to thank Max Holthaus for initiating this event. The Junior Tennis competition drew a gallery of proud parents, grandparents and supporters – great job by Bob Warkentine and his staff. For dinner we had BBQ’s set both upstairs and downstairs to handle the

crowds, and by night fall, the fireworks were spectacular! As we look forward to August, the club still has a great schedule to keep everyone busy. On August 1, join us for Nine and Dine – a fun night out for the couples. Members are encouraged to invite guests, Social / Social Athletic members may also participate in this event. (Guest of member fees will apply for golf). After golf, wind down with some cocktails and an Italian themed buffet. For those with children, we are running a double feature for the Kids’ Movie night. On August 8, the annual Couples Invitational will bring guests from far and near to enjoy the hospitality of Salina Country Club and its members. Wednesdays will feature Chef Jerry’s Grillin’ outside on the cart staging deck. We will be ready by 5pm so golfers can grab a quick bite to eat before Men’s League. Non-golfers may enjoy the Grill offerings and sit

back in Johnny’s or the Patio. Men’s and Women’s Club Championships are hosted in mid-August. Come out and support your favorite golfers! School starts back up soon and we will be losing a great summer staff – please make sure to acknowledge them and thank them for making Salina Country Club your home for the summer! Watch the calendar for the adjusted summer end Pool schedules. Please join me in welcoming our new Executive Chef, Jerry McGuire. Jerry joins us with years of private Club experience. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and understanding of what our diverse membership is expecting in a culinary sense. He can make some of the best comfort food and still be innovative and progressive in the newest culinary trends, especially with fresh fish and healthier selections. Good Day and Good Golfing!

A ugust golf events at SCC will kick off with Couples 9 & Dine on August 1,

followed by Beat the Pros on the 7, and the Couples Invitational August 8, 9 and 10. August is also “championship month” at SCC with the men’s and women’s club championships played on back to back weekends. The SCC Men’s Club Championship will be played on August 16 & 17, followed by the Women’s Club Championship on August 23 & 24 (sign up in the Pro Shop). Be sure to mark your calendar for the Heart of Kansas Pro-Am on Friday August 22, one of our most popular events of the year. Men’s and Women’s League will wrap up their respective seasons with the horse race and playoffs.

Our Labor Day tournament will be a two person low ball with flights for men, women and couples. You can make your own tee times and groups. Tee times for Labor Day will be taken on Thursday, August 28. As usual for holiday tee times we will begin taking tee time reservations beginning at 7am. We will alternate taking times by phone and in person. Each member may make a maximum of two tee times. Thank you to those members who volunteered to walk with Junior Golf groups this season. We believe it’s important for the kids to “play” golf as part of the learning program and we couldn’t do it without the help of members going out with groups. See you on the links.

T he season is in full stride and so are the maintenance practices here at the Club.

Typically the mowing and other steps to get the course ready for daily play begin at first light and if we are hosting a tournament or outside event we will begin well before sunrise. We would

always rather have you find the work already done when you arrive rather than see us doing it and avoid any distractions. Up until recently this was difficult to accomplish because we were unable to install lights on the walking greens mowers that we use. We are now using updated models that have allowed us to modify them and add the needed light systems to mow before sunrise Remember When: It was about this time 10 years ago we were preparing the course to gas and regrass the greens to remove all the

Poa and seed them with a new variety of Bentgrass. We spent a great deal of time researching the many varieties available to find one that would provide a superior putting surface for many years to come and that would remain Poa free as well. I think we can safely say that the right decisions were made and that the grass and our maintenance practices have proven themselves very well. See you on the course!

Message from Tennis Professional, Bob Warkentine

The ladies tennis mixer on July 2 was fabulous in many ways. Great weather, great participation (4 full courts of doubles), and a great luncheon prepared exclusively for our association. Our membership continues to grow and we are thrilled to welcome players of all levels as each of us works on improving our

skills with the help of coach Bob and his staff every Wednesday morning at drills from 8:30-9:30am. The next mixer will be on August 6.
