- DR A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK FEBRUARY 25, 2017

There are so many wonderful things that happen on our

school campus that capturing them in their entirety is

always a challenge. The last fortnight truly exemplified

what we as a school are all about.

The School Auditorium was filled with proud parents as

430 students of Grade 3 took the audience on a magical

journey through well-loved fairy tales for the Drama and

Theatre Inter Class Competition. The programme was

packed with brilliantly polished performances, colourful

costumes and elaborate props. It was very evident that

the teachers and students had worked hard to produce

an enchanting show which drew spirited and contin-

ued applause from the parents.

Gifted and talented students and those with high abilities

need opportunities that will challenge them in regular

classroom settings and help build their skills over

time. The Golden Ribbon Awards were presented to the

top 10% of students from Kindergarten to Grade 10 for

their exceptional performance in the Spell-a-thon

and the Math, Science, and General Knowledge

Olympiads. As a by-product, this initiative has

had a positive impact on the school’s IBT results.

The school’s performance in this international

benchmarking test – IBT 2016-2017 - places it

amongst the top performing schools in the UAE.

In recognition of this, the school has been select-

ed by the UAE Ministry of Education to participate

in the OECD’s Programme for International Stu-

dent Assessment (PISA 2018) Field Trial, a pre-

cursor to the PISA 2018 Main Study. We are com-

mitted to helping achieve the UAE’s aspiration of

being one of the 20 top countries all over the

world in PISA (articulated in the National Agenda

- Vision 2021).

At the GEMS Global Innovation Challenge held at

Wellington Silicon Oasis in collaboration with

Singularity University, our Junior Team compris-

ing Gatik Sharma, Samarth Shetty and Rishab Sai

of 5B2, Noel Joseph of 5B1 and George Jacob of

5B bagged the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Mohamed Haneen of Grade 9B won the People’s

Choice Award as well as the Jury Award in the

Senior category. He is also the ‘Global Finalist’

and will receive AED 1000/- in seed funding.

A superlative achievement by all counts!

MILLENNIUM MELODIES

Music expresses that which cannot

be put into words and that which

cannot remain silent.

“Millennium Melodies is amongst the most prestigious Inter School

Group Singing Competitions for Middle School students.

This event is organized annually by The Millennium School, Dubai. The theme this year was Jazz and A capella. Our students enthralled the

judges and the audience with their rendition of Sway and Lean on Me. The GMS choir of 29 students were awarded the First Prize and

presented with the impressive Rolling Trophy.

Kudos to the students and the teachers, Ms Chryssolyne Manohar and

Mr Stephen Philip.

SEP FINALE

Through involvement in a broad range of activities, students flourish in their own way. For many of them, working with their

hands can form the most memorable experiences of their time at GMS. We give students the freedom to experiment and find

their own interests.

Those who opt for sports are genuine enthusiasts. It is not all

about winning and we place equal emphasis on encouraging

students of all abilities to participate and enjoy the games.

The SEP Finale was held to exhibit all the incredible work that our students have put in over the last 5 months and to set even

higher goals and aspirations for the year 2017-2018.

GOLDEN RIBBON AWARDS

The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. We continue in our

efforts to provide our students with innovative, child-centric, personalized

strategies that challenge them and spur them to be enquirers and

independent thinkers. A journey which began on October 16th 2016 culmi-

nated with the “Golden Ribbon Award Ceremony” on February 19, 2017.

A special Prize Ceremony was held to recognise and re-

ward the students who emerged in the top 10% across

their grade in Math, Science, GK and Spell-a-Thon.

Parents proudly applauded and encouraged the students as

they went up on stage to receive their well deserved cer-

tificates of distinction.

GRADE 3 CONCERT

On Thursday, February 16th, the Inter Class Drama and Theatre Competition saw all 425 students of Grade 3

taking to the stage to weave a magical journey through popular fairy tales like Snow White, Hansel & Gretel,

Rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella and the Shoemaker and the Elves.

While the sets, costumes and props added to the show, it

succeeded so well because the talent pool onstage was truly remarkable. Adding that extra special touch were

the students of the Manzil Special Needs Centre. The Chief Guest, Mr. John Gougoulis, Senior Vice President -

Education, GEMS Education and the Principal, Ms Teresa

Varman applauded the students and teachers on the spectacular show.

The winners of the Competition were:

1st Position 3L & 3O 2nd Position 3E & 3H

3rd Position 3I & 3N.

Congratulations to all!
