A Message from Pastor Kristin

Volume 21 To sing the Praises of God, to Live the Grace of Jesus, to Share the Gift of the Spirit. Issue 1

A Quick Look …

On Ash Wednesday (February 10) we begin the season of

Lent. The following words serve as an “Invitation to Lent.”

“We begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for

repentance and God’s mercy. We are created to

experience joy in communion with God, to love one

another, and to live in harmony with creation. But our

sinful rebellion separates us from God, our neighbors, and

creation, so that we do not enjoy the life our creator

intended.

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to a discipline that

contends against evil and resists whatever leads us away

from love of God and neighbor. I invite you, therefore, to the

discipline of Lent- self-examination, and repentance, prayer

and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love-strengthened

by the gifts of word and sacrament. Let us continue our

journey through these forty days to the great Three Days of

Jesus’ death and resurrection.” (Evangelical Lutheran

Worship – Leaders Desk Edition pg. 617)

This season calls us to reflect on the ways we love and

serve God and our neighbors. Lent calls us to look for new

ways to continue in this work.

What is one new way you will love and serve God and your

neighbors this Lent? Intentional prayer time, reading the

Bible, serving people who are homeless, giving generously

to ministries who support people in need or crisis? Take

time to pray and think of one new way you can love and

serve this Lent. God’s Peace-

ASH WEDNESDAY

On February 10, we gather to worship

and observe “Ash Wednesday.” Ash

Wednesday marks the beginning of our

40 day journey to Easter called Lent.

On Ash Wednesday we receive ashes on

our foreheads reminding us of our

mortality. “Remember you are dust and

to dust you shall return.”

Join us for Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

The Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be held on Tuesday, February 9th, from 6 to 7:30 PM. This

year the Men of the Congregation along with the Work Camp Group will be preparing and serving the pancakes,

sausage, fruit and beverages. A free will offering will be accepted at the meal. Proceeds from the meal will be

used to defray costs related to the Work Camp Group’s summer work outing to Virginia.

Because of the manner in which pancakes are made, serving will be continuous from 6 PM until 7:30

PM. You may arrive at any time with this frame. Come out and enjoy!

THANKS THANKS THANKS

Dear Friends of Jake,

We are so very grateful for all the support we received from St. John’s

for the Pig Roast & Silent Auction Fund Raiser we had for Jacob. We

truly could not have done it without the time, energy, and generosity of

our church family.

Special thanks to Karen Siegman for organizing the kitchen and the

desserts, everyone who volunteered to work in the kitchen, everyone who

made a dessert and everyone who gave donations and bought tickets and

items. The Auction was a huge success thanks to all your help!

It has been 18 years since Jake’s accident and he will be 20 in

February. He continues to remain happy and healthy. He receives several

therapies at home each week which we will be able to continue with the

funds raised from the Pig Roast and Auction.

Without your help we would not be able to make sure Jake can be the

best he can be, so thank you for helping us help him! It is an honor to be

Jake’s family and we are humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity of

our families, our friends, our church and our community. Your support is

appreciated more than words can describe and we can never thank you

enough.

May you and your families have a blessed and happy new year!

St. John’s Epistle is published each month by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Westminster, Maryland. St. John’s is a congregation of the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Articles for the March newsletter should be submitted no later than Friday, February 12, 2016! Please send the articles to Frances, the office manager, at [email protected] or place them in her mailbox. Thanks!

Electronic Giving is Easy!

A s a way to automate your weekly or one-time offerings,

Electronic Giving offers convenience for individual

congregation members and provides much-needed donation

consistency for our congregation. Electronic Giving is used to

automatically transfer funds from your checking or savings account

to the church’s bank account. This can be done in one of two ways:

1) Fill out an Authorization Form (found outside the church office)

and send it to the church office, or 2) Go to the church website

(www.stjohnswestminster.org) and click the green “Online Giving”

button at any time to set up an automatic donation plan, change your

donation plan, make a one-time donation or view your online

donation history.

great kick-off. On behalf of St.

John’s we are very happy and

thankful for the congregation’s

response and offerings to this date.

We all hope this fund can help our

church mission go forward without

many of the financial problems and

needs that confront other

congregations. Remember the

creation of this fund is being used in

the future to help balance a yearly

budget or for other missions of the

church that the Finance Committee

and Church Council approve.

Below are several ways that a

member can make a donation to the

fund. This will be an ongoing fund

that a member can contribute to at

any time writing their request through

church envelopes, E-giving or any of

the other options suggested.

Ways that you can contribute to

the ongoing spirit of Christ in our

church! Donation Cash or Check;

Appreciated Securities; Real Estate;

Bequests (Wills & Trusts); Life

Insurance; Qualified Retirement

Plans.
