lutheran aduocacy Bishop’s Luncheon on Tuesday, January 28th

Several members of Messiah attended the Bishop’s Luncheon in Santa Fe. This was the 30th anniversary of Lutheran Advocacy in New Mexico. Lutheran Advocacy is the umbrella organization under which many other Protestant denominations, as well as Roman Catholics, Jewish congregations, and Unitarians actively support and participate in this mission. Over 150 people had preregistered although over 165 actually attended. The event which was held at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. The sanctuary was standing room only while Ruth Hoffman explained the various bills before the legislature that are of particular interest to Lutheran Advocacy. Two awards were presented at the luncheon and Bishop Gonia gave the keynote address. Bishop Gonia agreed to provide copies of the presentation he made at the church before lunch at the La Fonda, as well as the speech he gave there. These will be made available as soon as they are received.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE CORNER

By Rosemary Butler

The Congregational Care Committee has been very busy planning and doing

things for the congregation. In January, we provided the luncheon following

the Memorial Service for Danny Winsor. More than 80 people attended the

luncheon. In addition, a luncheon was provided for the funeral of Joe

Santistevan. Thanks to everyone who provided food for these important

events.

Also, we coordinated the Pot Luck luncheon for the annual meeting. Approximately 47 people

attended this event. The food was great, and there was a wonderful opportunity for the

congregation to spend some time together before the meeting.

In February, we have a fun social event scheduled. EVERYONE is invited to our Potluck/Bingo night.

It will be held on Saturday, February 22, at 5:30 pm. This will be another fun opportunity for the

congregation to gather for fun, food and fellowship. Please plan to attend, and bring something

good to eat.

Finally, on March 1st

, we are planning an outing to see the new movie, Son of God. We will attend

the matinee at Winrock Theatre, and meet at Dion’s following the movie for pizza and to discuss

the film. More details will be available near the end of the month.

We have a lot of things planned, and would love to have more people involved. If you are

interested, you may call me at 433-2641.

Pastor‟s Report—February

Join us for Candlemas, Sunday, February2

Feb. 2 is traditionally our Ground Hog day here in the U.S. But, in Christians churches Feb. 2 is reserved for the Presentation of Our Lord. That refers to the account in Luke’s 2nd chapter when Joseph and Mary present the infant Jesus at the Temple. At that dedication, Simeon and old man cries out ―Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation (a reference to the infant Jesus) which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples. He is a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.‖ The Festival of Candlemas takes this reference from Simeon’s words ―He is a light for revelation to the Gentiles…‖ as an occasion to bless all the candles the Church uses for the coming year. Our Altar Guild will have examples of the Christ Candle, along with the candles used for Baptisms, Confirmations, Christmas Eve, All Saints Sunday and other worship events where candles are used. Please join us for this new tradition we are beginning at Messiah. The candles will be blessed at both services.

Transition Team Meets

The Transition Team headed by Ron Kulju continues its work this month. The Team will hear reports from task forces—Communication Enhancement and Social-Education Opportunities. Rich Nelson, our Transition Process consultant, is working with this team. There will be at least one more opportunity for the congregation to weigh in on our vision statement and the direction of our ministry teams. That date has not been set but is planned in the next few weeks. The Transition Team, working with the Synod, will have the necessary Messiah Ministry Profile completed in the next few months. Then the Call Committee will be selected and interviews will begin.

Adult Teaching Forums continue this month Jim Raquet and I are team teaching a new 4 week series beginning on February 2. (We will take a one week break on February 16 for an Open Forum.) These gatherings are in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am to 10:15am. The February series is an ELCA study aimed at helping us understand how we can grow our church. Come join us

Walking to the Sanctuario on Good Friday This year on Good Friday, April 18th, a Messiah group will meet in the parking lot and caravan to Chimayo where the group will meet me some 2 miles outside of Chimayo. We will walk in and return after lunch. This is an amazing experience and covered nationally. It is a total of less than 4 miles to and from the Sanctuario. We estimate leaving at 7:30am and returning before 4pm. Our Good Friday service is that evening. Blessings on you all,

Pastor Tom Anderson
