Plan Your Chamber Involvement Now

As a Business Owner and Chamber Member, you've no doubt got a lot on your plate as you move your business into the New Year. Planning ahead involves time, but if you're planning to get the most out of your business and your Chamber membership, now is the time to look at your

calendar and schedule how and when you'll be involved in this year's coming events. The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce went through a growing leap in 2007. Additional Board Members were added and office expansion plans were put in place to deliver greater benefits to the Membership. More functions, more opportunity. Do you plan on participating in CornFest? Do you want to have a float in this year's parade? Will you be attending the monthly mixers or golfing in our annual tournament? Can you serve on a Committee? How will you inject your company's presence into the Brentwood Chamber's arena this year?

You can't squeeze juice from an orange without applying pressure. As large and successful as our Chamber is, it will not benefit you or your company unless you apply the pressure of participation. If you can incorporate the Chamber's business into your business, you'll love the results. Take time today and use the Calendar of Events from this Clarion and incorporate them into your calendar for the year. Stop by the Chamber or call us so that we might include your name as a Participant in one of our many events. Success in your business is dependent on planning, and if you're a part of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, we'd love to share in that success!

“Lori’s Minute” (by Lori Knudsen of California Payroll)

Find Effective Ways to Control Fraud

One of our company's managers heard about a company that holds back final paychecks until employees undergo a physical examination as a way of reducing fraudulent workers' compensation claims. It sounds like a good idea. What do you think?

Fraudulent workers' comp claims cost employers in the form of higher premiums, so it’s not surprising that companies scramble to find ways to prevent it. But holding back a final paycheck is not a blanket solution. State laws determine when an employer must pay final wages — and the deadlines might be the employee’s last day of work, the following business day, three business days after the last day, or the next scheduled payday. (Check with your professional adviser or your state labor office to determine your requirements.) Another consideration: In the case of a termination, it's best to move the process along. Why agitate a disgruntled employee with a requirement to get a physical exam? In the long run, it could wind up costing your company even more money. There are ways to help control workers' comp that are less threatening and won’t create resentment. Consider these steps to help create a safer, healthier workplace while controlling costs:

1. Write job descriptions that are specific and clear about the physical requirements for each job. 2. Require prospective employees to take a physical exam and help the physician make a better evaluation of the individual’s ability to perform the work by providing a job description. 3. Report all claims, but directly pay the small ones to guard against higher premiums later. 4. Start a safety committee and train members to investigate every accident and injury so it can uncover the reason for the accidents and take measures to prevent reoccurrences.

Of course, accidents and injuries do happen, so another way to help contain compensation costs is to develop a return-to-work policy. Tell employees that after an injury the company will work with their doctors to help them return to work as soon as medically reasonable. Keep in mind that most employees don’t file bogus workers' comp claims. Studies show that only one percent to two percent of claims are fraudulent. But if you do suspect fraudulent activity, report it to your state’s workers' compensation bureau. By taking steps to prevent fraud and ensuring that your work place is safe, you can help control your company’s workers' compensation costs.
