2008 Chamber Board of Directors Honored at Installation Dinner
A gala affair filled the Nines at Brentwood Golf Club on January 23rd as the 2008 Board of Directors were sworn in. They are pictured above taking their oath to serve the greater good of the Brentwood Chamber as well as the community. Brentwood Super Citizen Helen Myers named as 2008 Citizen of the Year
Behind the scenes, Helen Myers has tirelessly reached out to those in need, some who are too poor to even help each other. Whether it’s people in Contra Costa County or those in another country, Helen gives, helps with fundraisers, and serves on the board of Delta Community Services, Inc., an organization she was instrumental in establishing. She’s involved in making her community a better place to live... all this while running a business and keeping track of one of her greatest passions...football.

Additional Board Members were added and office expansion plans were put in place to deliver greater benefits to the Membership. More functions, more opportunity. Find Effective Ways to Control Fraud
One of our company's managers heard about a company that holds back final paychecks until employees undergo a physical examination as a way of reducing fraudulent workers' compensation claims. It sounds like a good idea. What do you think?
Fraudulent workers' comp claims cost employers in the form of higher premiums, so it’s not surprising that companies scramble to find ways to prevent it. But holding back a final paycheck is not a blanket solution. State laws determine when an employer must pay final wages — and the deadlines might be the employee’s last day of work, the following business day, three business days after the last day, or the next scheduled payday. (Check with your professional adviser or your state labor office to determine your requirements.) Another consideration: In the case of a termination, it's best to move the process along. Why agitate a disgruntled employee with a requirement to get a physical exam? In the long run, it could wind up costing your company even more money. There are ways to help control workers' comp that are less threatening and won’t create resentment. Consider these steps to help create a safer, healthier workplace while controlling costs:
1. Write job descriptions that are specific and clear about the physical requirements for each job. 2. Require prospective employees to take a physical exam and help the physician make a better evaluation of the individual’s ability to perform the work by providing a job description. 3. Report all claims, but directly pay the small ones to guard against higher premiums later. 4. Start a safety committee and train members to investigate every accident and injury so it can uncover the reason for the accidents and take measures to prevent reoccurrences.
Of course, accidents and injuries do happen, so another way to help contain compensation costs is to develop a return-to-work policy. Tell employees that after an injury the company will work with their doctors to help them return to work as soon as medically reasonable. Keep in mind that most employees don’t file bogus workers' comp claims. Studies show that only one percent to two percent of claims are fraudulent. But if you do suspect fraudulent activity, report it to your state’s workers' compensation bureau. By taking steps to prevent fraud and ensuring that your work place is safe, you can help control your company’s workers' compensation costs.
