The present handbook contains a short description of the camera FED-3 and basic rules/principles for beginners.

It is not meant as a handbook about photography.

Insignificant differences between the description and the camera may occur as a result of technical developments in the design.

The FED-3 camera uses standard 35-mm movie film with frame size 24x36 mm.

The high-definition lens allows you to obtain flawless large size photographs.

The Wide range of shutter speeds, shutter release safety, synchronised flash socket, self-timer, viewfinder diopter adjustment, low weight and compactness can satisfy both the amateur and the professional.

The FED-3 is complemented by the "Industar-61" lens with lanthane optics or the "Industar-26" lens.

The design of the camera also allows the use of the replaceable lenses "Industar-50", "Jupiter-8", "Jupiter-9", "Jupiter-11", "Jupiter-12" and others.

The focusing adjustment when taking pictures is accomplished with the help of the rangefinder.

The self-timer built into the camera allows one to photograph oneself.

The provision of automatic shutter speeds from 1/500 to 1 second allows the use of the camera in any light conditions.

In the lower cover of the camera there is a socket for (taking pictures with) a tripod.

The tripod may also be used without removing the camera from the case.

The camera may be loaded in dim regular light in the following manner:

By turning the (round) nut on the bottom of the case unscrew the tripod screw, while holding the camera, and remove it from the case. With your fingernails lift the handles of the locks and turn them half a turn to the stop.

Then, pressing with the thumb, push away the back cover so that its edge comes out of the groove in the body, and remove it.

Open the camera and remove from it the take-up spool and the cassette. The spool is removed by exerting gentle force.

Load the cassette with film (cassettes are loaded in total darkness).

Pull out the free end of the film from the cassette to a length of about 10 cm, fasten it in the take-up spool so that the tooth of the spring enters one of the perforation holes.

Push the take-up spool onto the axle stub, then lay the cassette in the camera. The film must be lightly tightened so that the teeth of the feed sprocket drum come through the holes of the perforations in the film. Close the camera.

To advance unexposed film into the frame it is necessary to twice operate the shutter, pressing after each advance on the shutter release button.

Move the film advance lever all the way to the end of its travel.If the camera is operated correctly it will wind easily, without jerks or perceptible force.

Now set the "0" on the frame counter opposite the pointer.

Set the film sensitivity scale to point to the type of film loaded in the camera.

The film type reminder arrangement consists of a movable sensitivity scale in the units GOST (ASA, DIN) and a stationary pointer with defined film type indicators:

daylight colour film;

colour film for artificial light;

black-and-white film.

The camera is completed by the lens "Industar-26M" or "Industar-61" with lanthane optics (model FED-3L).

On the lens mount is the distance scale.

The aperture scale indicates the change in illumination caused by the diameter of the lens - "strength of light".

The depth of field scale shows on the distance scale the limits, within which the sharpness of the image will be satisfactory for each aperture.

The purpose of the distance scale is to adjust the lens to give a sharp image.

The indication on the scale corresponds to the distance from the photographed object to the surface of the film, in meters.

Focusing the camera is achieved with the aid of the optical rangefinder. In order to focus the camera precisely and correctly, first adjust the ring of the viewfinder diopter adjustment according to your eyesight (the mechanism of the diopter adjustment gives a correction of +-2 diopters).

Then point the camera at the object to be photographed. In the centre of the field of view in the viewfinder/rangefinder you will see a disc, distinguished by its colour, in which the image may appear to be split in two.

Bring the image together to a single image by turning the focusing ring of the lens. It is recommended to make the adjustment in the middle third of the coloured field.

To adjust the shutter speed pull up the knob, turn it so that the index points to the mark on the scale and release it into place.

The shutter speed may only be set with the shutter wound up. The knob must not be turned through the interval between 30 and 1.

The numbers on the scale designate the shutter speed in fractions of a second (1, ½, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 of a second). "B" is for making long "manual" exposures.

To operate the self-timer turn the lever anti-clockwise so that it points upward. Press the self-timer release button and quickly take your position. The shutter will be released after 9 - 15 sec.

The shutter can be operated by the release knob or by using the self-timer.

Flash photography is only possible at 1/30 sec shutter speed.

To take photographs mount the flashlamp reflector in the accessory shoe of the camera, insert the cable of the flash into the synchroniser socket.

The aperture, independently of the shutter speed, should then be selected in accordance with the sensitivity of the film, the distance to the object to be photographed and the power of the flashlamp.

The following procedure is recommended when working with the camera.

Open the case, remove the lens cap.

Looking in the viewfinder, choose where to stand to get the image you desire in the frame.

Focus the lens. Set the aperture depending on the depth of field required. Advance the film and wind the shutter with the film advance lever. Set the required shutter speed with the shutter speed knob.

Point the camera at the object to be photographed and press the shutter release knob smoothly and evenly.

If the source of light is located in front of the camera, always use a lens hood.

Before opening the camera, it is necessary to rewind the film into the cassette.

To rewind the film disconnect the shutter mechanism, in order to do this with your right thumb press down on the knurled edge of the knob under the shutter release and turn it towards the letter "B" (for "rewind" in Russian), then release it.

When rewinding the film it is necessary to put the lens cap on the lens.

Turn the rewind button in the direction of the arrow.

The film is rewound when extra resistance is felt when the film is pulled out of the take-up spool.

Open the camera and remove the cassette.
