Fellowship Programs in Urology at Severance Hospital
Severance Hospital
Severance Hospital was founded in 1885 by an American missionary, Dr. Horace N. Allen
(1858-1932). It was originally known as Royal Hospital Kwanghyewon (House of Extended
Grace) and marked the introduction and acceptance of an entirely new system of Western
medicine in Korea.
Soon, the hospital was renamed Chejungwon (House of Universal Helpfulness) and
inaugurated as Korea’s first Western style hospital. Chejungwon Medical School, Korea’s
first modern medical school, was established in 1886.
As the hospital and its activities grew, by 1899 it was determined that a new facility needed to
be set up. Louis H. Severance, an American philanthropist from Cleveland who was at the
Ecumenical Missionary Conference in New York in 1900, heard of the need for a modern
hospital in Seoul and contributed to the construction of a new hospital building that was
completed in September of 1904, and Chejungwon was renamed Severance Memorial
Hospital. Since that time, Severance has been at the forefront of modern medicine in Korea. A
new 24-story, 1006-bed hospital building was set up in May 2005. Proud of its roots as the
first Western hospital in Korea, Severance continues to distinguish itself as a world-class
university hospital with state-of-the-art medical technology.
Urological Science Institute
The Department of Urology was established in Korea as the Department of Dermatology, and
Professor Kung Sun Oh, one of the first Koreans to have received training abroad and studied
dermatology in Europe, was the first to assume the department chair on May 14, 1917.
Historically, the Department of Dermatology and Urology functioned as one unit, but in 1961,
the two were separated into two specialties in keeping with the changes in modern medicine.
It was the hard work and untiring efforts of Professor Jong Soon Wang, who was the first to
assume the chair in the Department of Urology, that made this division possible. The
Urological Science Institute was founded in 1995 for the study of men's health and disease.
Its slogan “Deep-rooted history, Passion for leading the world” perfectly expresses its goal of
being recognized as a global institute based on its long history. Since 2002, this institution
has broadened its horizons and has been conducting comprehensive research in various fields
of urology. The Urological Science Institute was chosen as the “Best Institute" after an
evaluation of research centers at Yonsei University in 2005. Currently, the Urological
Science Institute is actively involved in conducting comprehensive research in all areas of
urology such as Urologic oncology, Endourology, Neurourology, Pediatric urology.

Program Highlights
The one-year program integrates clinical and research work in all of the subspecialties offered,
viz., Urological oncology, Endourology, Pediatric urology, and Neuro-urology. The
fellowship is structured as per the interests of the applicant and the content determined by his
prior experience in urology. It is also possible to enroll in two specialties, (a 6-month
program in Pediatric urology plus a 6-month program in Neuro-urology). Training focuses on
advanced procedures including RIRS, PCNL, VAMS, Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery. Our
training program (http://www.endourology.org/positions/yonsei-university-college-of-medicine-
department-of-urology/) is certified by the Endourological Society. Through this program,
participants are familiarized with different techniques and proper use of instruments in
minimally invasive surgery. In addition to clinical work, our fellows are expected to actively
participate in research. The robust clinical experience our program offers gives participants
access to abundant prospectively maintained databases that facilitate data gathering and paper
presentation. Additionally, fellows attend regular weekly conferences discussing optimal
management of cases with direct involvement and interaction across different specialties.
This program offers an opportunity to understand and use state-of-the-art techniques and
engage in extensive research. Ours being a high-volume healthcare facility, fellows get
exposure to a wide variety of complex urological cases with direct access to multiple research
resources.
Clinical Research Program Highlights
Fellows are expected to participate in clinical research. Our department, as a high-volume
center, provides a huge body of clinical experience. The robust clinical experience our
program provides, gives participants access to a wealth of prospectively maintained databases
to facilitate data collection and paper presentation—an environment that undoubtedly is a
great opportunity for fellows.

Seoul: The Heart of Tradition & Culture
Seoul is a unique city full of character and qualities that cannot be found anywhere else in the
world. Throughout its 600-year history as the capital of Korea, Seoul has been the center of a
rich and vibrant tradition and culture. Seoul is also proud of its great natural beauty, which
can be observed in its mighty Han River, stoic Nam Mountains, and refreshing streams that
flow throughout the city.
UNESCO has recognized Seoul for its rich culture and modern beauty, and last year it was
named the UNESCO City of Design. One of the most attractive features of this city is its
integration with the cutting-edge IT industry, as is observed in the everyday routines of
Seoulites.
As city that is constantly developing and full of delightful surprises, Seoul offers visitors
beautiful sights and exciting streets at every corner. Today, the city of Seoul continues its best
efforts to make the city more enjoyable and comfortable to both visitors and citizens.
Seoul has a rich experience in hosting business events and boasts a growing profile of large
and prestigious international conferences. According to recent UIA Statistics, Seoul was
ranked 3rd in the world for the number of international conferences hosted in 2016. With a
proven track record, Seoul has hosted some very grand events, such as the 2011 World
Congress of Dermatology (15000 participants), the high-profile 2010 G-20 Seoul Summit,
and the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit.
Severance Hospital is located in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, where one can witness the
variety in Korean culture. In addition to Korea's first Western health institution,
Gwanghyewon, located within the Yonsei University, there are other sites nearby where
visitors are treated to glimpses of the 500-year history of the Chosun Dynasty, such as
Deoksu-gung, Changdeok-gung, and Gyeongbok-gung. Located just 15 minutes away from
the hospital, students find these a good outing to enjoy Korea's traditional culture.
Sinchon: The Center of Youth Culture
The Sinchon area around Yonsei campus is home to one of the most vibrant and exciting
college towns in Seoul. With a rich array of facilities and activities, Sinchon has a unique
identity that attracts the young population from around the city and country.
This is where one can mingle with the youth of Korea.
