General Duties

1. Leadership of faculty and instructional staff towards excellence in teaching and scholarship.

2. Management and evaluation of eighteen academic unit leaders and through them their nearly 200 faculty and staff.

3. Fiscal management of college budgets and strategic initiatives.

4. Oversight of curriculum development, assessment, and program reviews.

5. Arts oversight and strategic planning.

6. Development activities related to external funding opportunities, working with affinity groups like Partners for the Arts towards increase gifts to the college.

Specific Accomplishments

1. Worked with faculty and staff to develop the college’s first strategic plan. The year-long process resulted in a new vision and mission statements, strategic goals, and action items that informed the accomplishments that follow.

2. Institute for Collaborate Research and Engagement (iCoRE) – Established, 2012. Grant submissions have increased by 200%, Grants received in the arts, humanities and social sciences currently holding at $1,000,000 to 1,500,000/year, a 400% increase since 2011.

3. Southern Quarterly – published by The University of Southern Mississippi since 1962, the Southern Quarterly is an internationally known scholarly journal devoted to the interdisciplinary study of Southern arts and culture. In decline until 2011, under college leadership, the journal has increased it subscription base by 60%, and was accepted in 2014 for distribution by Project MUSE, the leading provider of digital humanities and social sciences content.

4. Undergraduate Student Success Initiatives – Jump Scholars program, peer student mentoring and advising programs, and undergraduate research symposium – all initiated or expanded since 2012, many adopted as university-wide initiatives.

5. Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) – a year-long select faculty leadership seminar designed to grow leadership from within current faculty ranks, targeting mid-career faculty. Two cohorts have completed the program and many of the participants are now serving administrative or university-wide committee leadership roles.

6. College Profile Expansion – Through a comprehensive communication plan, and in partnership with department chairs and school directors, our success in our scholarly and creative research, and in our teaching is no longer a well-kept secret. The results have impacted faculty/staff satisfaction and has had positive impact on the recruitment of high

quality students to our undergraduate and graduate programs.

7. College Forensics Team – Once a strong program at Southern Miss, debate was defunded in the 1990s but was returned to campus in 2013. Tied to student success initiatives and the recruiting potential for high performing high school seniors, debate epitomizes the work we do collectively in arts and letters to improve communication and increase critical thinking skills. In three short years, the team has already won numerous collegiate competitions and has competed internationally.

8. Restoration of language study – Since 2012, and through reallocation of budgets from across the college, world languages increased to include Chinese, Italian, Russian, and for a time Arabic. With an eye toward opportunities with the military and international studies and business, Arts and Letters has re-established language programs that were once nearly eliminated.

9. Established a Department of Interdisciplinary Studies – A research based plan of study culminating in the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS), the creative and innovative degree program is tailored to individual education interests and career goals. The program also provides an otherwise traditional college (Arts and Letters) with the agility to adapt to emerging fields. The program is one of the fastest growing majors in the college.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH: Technology Integration and Course Development

1. Development of the master of music education degree hybrid distance learning track: In order to reach the entire state and beyond with courses and training in graduate level music education, particularly, to assist in-service teachers who seek a master’s degree or individual courses, but are unable to attend classes in Hattiesburg, the conversion of the traditional residency program began in 2001. The hybrid distance track is in the final stages of piloting, with six graduate students currently enrolled. The distance track will be available for regular admission in January 2005. The curriculum consists of fully online delivery, online delivery with a short residency requirement, or intensive study residency requirement with online course supplements. All M.M.Ed. courses were converted to hybrid online delivery by January 2005.

2. Observational system development in teaching instrumental conducting at the undergraduate and graduate level using digital recording systems, streaming video playback via WebCT, and technology interaction using Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, MS PowerPoint, and Quicktime video for instructor/student analysis

3. Mentoring through WebCT including student/teacher mentoring at a distance for in-service

teachers, and continuing professional education using WebCT technology enhancement to traditional music curriculum in instrumental conducting and music education methods. Specifically, the technological tools used included:
