A Chilton couple are still very happily married fifty years after tying the knot.Sydney, 79, and Nancy Mason, 75, who live in Hambleton Way in the village, were married on Saturday, June 20th, 1959 at Bishop Auckland’s Registry Office on Cockton Hill Road.The couple met at a Welfare Institute Dance, now the Mainsforth Community Centre in Ferryhill Station.Syd, who is originally from Bishop Auckland, embarked upon his working life at JT Proud & Son, a Solicitors also in Bishop Auckland. He stayed there for seven years before getting a job at Spennymoor’s Thorns in 1955. He stayed at the factory as a mechanical inspector until his retirement in 1993.After leaving school, Nancy, nee Heaviside from Ferryhill, stayed at home until she also found a job at Thorns in 1955, where she worked as an assembly worker for five years. After their wedding, Nancy and Syd moved to South View
in Chilton before moving to Hambleton Way in 1973, where they remain today.The happy couple have one son, Clive, and one daughter, Sheila. They also have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as three step grandchildren and one

step great-grandchild.As well as enjoying their retirement together, the couple also enjoy their individual pursuits. Nancy loves to knit and enjoys reading and crocheting as well as organising activities at the Rosewood Grange sheltered housing, while Syd has been kept busy with his wood carving since the late 1960’s, exhibiting many of his wonderful pieces in their home. He also rides his bike everyday, having done so since 1960 when he began to cycle to work. The lovely couple celebrated the happy occasion with an afternoon party with family and friends at Chilton and Windlestone Workingmen’s Club. They also held an open evening at their home where many friends and family were present.

Following the recent consultation, services at Bishop Auckland Hospital are set to change from July 1st, in line with the hospital set to become a centre for planned care.The urgent care service at the hospital will provide treatment 24 hours a day for minor illnesses and injuries, however the Accident and Emergency department will only be available between 8.00am and 12 midnight.Even this is simply a temporary measure, however, as all seriously ill patients will be taken to Darlington or Durham A&E as of October 1st, although the urgent care centre, staffed by GP’s and staff skilled in emergency care, will continue its services for patients 24 hours a day.Emergency care for seriously ill children will also no longer be provided at Bishop Auckland from July 1st, with patients again being transferred to Durham or
Darlington.Basically, this means that adults who may be seriously ill should not be taken to Bishop Auckland General Hospital between midnight and 8.00am, and children who may be seriously ill should not be taken at any time.Instead, patients should call 999 or travel to the A&E Department at the University Hospital of North Durham or Darlington Memorial Hospital.Serious illnesses or injuries could include heart attacks, strokes, fits, asthma attacks, head, neck and spinal injuries, road traffic accidents or breathing difficulties.Examples of minor injuries and illnesses include chest infections, urine infections, fevers, cuts, sprains, hand, foot and wrist fractures and suspected eye infections.Anyone unsure about where to go in an emergency should contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

A twenty year-old Ferryhill lad will take his Army career a quick march further, after swearing the Oath of Allegiance at Durham Army Careers Information Office.Dean Bransom attended the ceremony along with five other local recruits. He will now go on and train to become a driver in the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC), a role that will allow him to operate some of the Army’s many vehicles, including Challenger tanks, cargo vehicles and tank transporters. During his career, Dean will
support the Army around the world, ensuring vital resources and soldiers get to where they are most needed.Others taking the oath included a Plant Operator Mechanic and an Armourer Engineer.Commenting on the Army enlistments, Office Manager of Durham ACIO, Staff Sergeant Mark Wilson said,

The proposal to return Ferryhill to having a Town Clerk was supported by the majority of those who turned out to cast their vote in last week’s Parish Poll.Just 481 residents, only 6.21 per cent, took part in the poll, with
POLL RESULTS329 in favour of abolishing the position of Executive Officer and 152 against it.Although the majority showed they were keen to revert to the old title, Ferryhill Town Council is not obliged to act on the result.

Last week saw the start of Chilton’s very own Cub Scout Pack, the first since 1991.Tom Johnson and Ian Milburn have taken up the mantle of leaders for the pack, supported by a number of people who have formed a group executive.The Cubs meet every Wednesday evening at St Aidan’s Church Hall and will be open to boys and girls aged 8 to 10½. Since October, a small team has been working to get the Cub Scout Pack up and running, with a number of people becoming involved from the town and the wider area. Financial support has been received from Chilton Town Council, the former Sedgefield Borough Council’s Koolka$h fund and Durham University Charity Kommittee (DUCK), as well as some Scout sources, all to ensure the best possible start for the youngsters.The District Commissioner, Ian Johnson said, “It’s really pleasing to see the support for this initiative; we have two strong leaders and a group executive to provide background support. The local
support has been great as well as the financial support, the local Sainsbury’s, St Aidan’s Church, Community College and Town Council have been very helpful.”The youngsters have been meeting together since early May, and last week they were all formally invested into the pack, making their Cub Scout Promise. Shortly afterwards, the group also formed an executive to support the leaders in providing exciting activities and fun at regular weekly meetings.The pack is busy putting together equipment as it gets started, but is also looking for a missing flag. The previous 1st Chilton Scout Group used the flag, which is yellow with a purple scout sign in the centre. Thirteen junior students from the Chikara Karate Club in Spennymoor, to which many Ferryhill and Chilton youngsters attend, took part in an annual summer camp recently. The camp, which is open to all GB organisation members, took place in Nottingham. The camp is an opportunity for students from many different clubs to meet and train together. Six of those who attended from the Spennymoor Club took part in a grading which was conducted by Great
Britain’s number one ranked Kyokushin instructor Master, Jose Claronino 7th Dan. After a vigorous test involving basic movements, self defence techniques and full contact fighting, all six passed.Damon Gallone and Connor Colledge both achieved brown belt status whilst Adam Foster gained his blue belt black stripe. Raegan Briggs, Ethan Walton and Charlie Harris were all awarded blue belts.Chief Instructor Adam Walker commented, “I am so pleased that everyone who graded did
so well. It is good to see all of the hard work pay off. It's also great to see the kids meet up with friends they have made previously from different areas around the country.“Trips away like this would not be possible if it were not for the individuals and organisation that sponsor the club. Therefore, members of the club would like to thank M.W Anderson, Taylors Newsforce, Mayfair Cars and the Green Tree Pub for their continued support.”

Almost 150 primary school pupils teamed up to get a taste of secondary school life and make friends on a rowing, art, maths and science challenge recently.Visiting youngsters were treated to a taste of college life at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College last month, making bugs out of wire and foam, mixing chemicals and observing reactions and playing memory, description and building games.The pupils from Broom Cottages, Cleves Cross, Chilton, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station were made to jump when science teachers Louise Dunn and Philippa Clarke from the college detonated a series of chemical explosions. “I liked the science when we made bangs,” Heather from Chilton Primary School said.Joshua, also from Chilton Primary School, added, “I really enjoyed the science – the popping was unexpected and I liked the experiments.”Explaining the purpose of the day, transition teacher Carolyn Hardy said, “We are keen to support children in the area as they move from primary to secondary school and we are delighted that they joined us for a fun-packed day at Ferryhill Business and
Enterprise College.“We hope the day provided an excellent opportunity for the area’s young people to visit the college for a range of fun activities so they can begin to look forward to their move to secondary school with confidence.”During the day, staff worked hard to show a range of what is on offer at the school.“Students have experienced a computer generated rowing competition, and used their powers of memory and communication to rebuild a tower after just one of the group observed a finished version,” continued Carolyn
who went on to say, “The science department provided some shocks to keep children entertained and the art department constructed some gruesome looking bugs.”Later in the day, head of drama Siobhan McCavanagh lead Year 7 to 11 pupils in a rendition of scenes from the college’s forthcoming production, The Rocky Monster Show, which will be performed at the college on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, July 14th, 15th and 16th.At the end of a tiring but fun day, Adam from Dean Bank Primary school expressed his thoughts, saying, “I loved the rowing, science, maths, art- everything!”

Broom Cottages Primary School will be holding its annual Summer Fayre at the beginning of next month.As well as the usual stalls, face-painting and tombola, there will also be a giant slide and bouncy castle, a ‘bucking bronco’ ride, trampolines, a penalty shoot out game and teachers in stocks.There will also be plenty to eat, with hot dogs, a tuck shop, chocolate fountain and home-made cakes on offer.A spokesperson for the school
commented, “Over the past years we have managed to buy each class a camera, we have helped the drama club with their lighting fund, netball skirts, audio listening systems for reception and we managed to install a small trim rail.”The event will take place on Friday, July 3rd, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.“Without your support we couldn’t do these things so please come along and offer your support again”.

Following months of raising funds to fix the roof, work is almost complete at Ferryhill Methodist Church.To mark the occasion, the church will be holding a service of re-dedication and thanksgiving on Wednesday, July 1st, from 7.00pm.The Minister, Reverend Michael Pullan, will be leading the service and there will be tea,
coffee and biscuits afterwards.A spokesperson for the church said, “We are indebted to many people, not least the people of Ferryhill, who have supported our efforts during recent years, first for the refurbishment of the building and now for the roof. The family of a Ferryhill lad travelled to H.M.S. Raleigh in Torpoint, Cornwall recently, to see his ‘passing out’ parade.The parade marked the end Tom Baxter’s Phase 1 training in the Royal Navy.“The ‘passing out’ parade was wonderful and we are extremely proud of what Tom
has achieved”, commented one pleased member of his family.Tom, of Glebe Houses, Ferryhill, has now moved to H.M.S. Sultan at Gosport in Hampshire, where he will continue his training, specialising in Marine Engineering.

Dear Editor,Referring to the article in The Chapter about the racist attack on Mr Sharma’s SJS shop in Haig Terrace, Dean Bank.I have lived in Dean Bank all my life and am a very regular customer to the SJS store in Dean Bank, a good friend to Simon and Geta, as people in Dean Bank know them.Mr and Mrs Sharma and their children are a credit to Dean Bank; they are hard working, polite, respectful, friendly nothing’s a trouble to help you.The shop offers the community of Dean Bank a good service.
Simon starts early and works to late evening to make a living and care for his family. I can remember when Simon and Geta came to live in Dean Bank twenty years ago and took up shop. His family have been born and raised in Dean Bank and have a right to live here without intimidation and fear, neither should his children be threatened in any way or be forced from their home.This attack on an innocent, hard working family shows his [the attacker’s] true colours as a weak violent bully full of his own ‘man ego’. The Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen Martin, shows the Armed Forces Day Flag, which is currently raised in Ferryhill.
Dozens of people turned out to observe Ferryhill Town Council’s flag raising event on Monday, June 22nd, including many Councillors.The flag will be flown in unison with other flags being raised across the United
Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man in a universal show of support, honouring Britain’s Armed Forces past, present and future.Just some attending the ceremony were the Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen
Martin, Councillors Tommy Garrett and Brian Gibson, and veterans George Miller and Dave Woods.The flag will be flown until June 29th, when it will be lowered and presented to a local veteran.
FLAG RAiSED FOR ARmED FORCES DAY
The Leamside Line, just north of Ferryhill, could be restored after the Association of Train Companies (Atoc) has claimed there is a strong case for opening new stations and lines in a bid to expand the national rail network.Around fourteen lines and forty stations could be developed, benefitting nearby towns like Ferryhill.The line was just some of the 5,000 miles of track closed in the sixties following the Beeching Report.The decision on whether the plans should go ahead will be taken by Network Rail, the
Department for Transport and local and regional government.Atoc’s Chief Executive, Michael Roberts, said, “Record numbers and rising demand require us to plan for the long-term, while climate change and population growth make it vital that in doing so, we adapt the rail network to meet tomorrow’s needs.“Providing attractive new services and easier access to the rail network will encourage passengers to switch to rail from other, less green, modes of transport.”
