The extremely talented Irish musician, producer and singer/songwriter Imelda May this year takes the headline spot at the City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival as she launches her new music. May will feature as the headline act at the five day festival on Sunday 30th April and Monday 1st May at The Millennium Forum.
As she prepares to bring her new album (described as a ‘new direction for May’) to the festival, Imelda, when asked what her audience should expect, said, “This is me. I always loved the Fifties rockabilly style but there was a point where I felt I was almost dressing up as Imelda May. It was as if I was getting into character for a gig. And I didn’t want to do that anymore. Life changed. I love the albums I made before. They were honest to the person I was. But that was then… and this is now.”

On bass is Co. Clare born Neil O’Loghlen, who is known for his work with guitar master Louis Stewart and Ensemble Eriu. Robert MitchellRobert brings his new trio to N. Ireland for the first time, featuring Tom Mason on bass and Salem Raman on drums - they perform from Robert’s new album ‘A Vigil For Justice. A Vigil For Peace’. Robert’s current priorities include his long-running ensemble Panacea; his new trio Epiphany 3, and solo performance - including his fascination with one-handed works, which led to a solo album. He will deliver a workshop at this year’s festival entitled ‘The Illusion Of One Hand’.
Mitchell also continues to work with young Cuban firebrand vocalist Dayme Arocena, Soul and West End star Shaun Escoffery, French sax innovator Stephane Payen, great young saxophonist Tom Harrison, Cuban violinist Omar Puente, South African education, percussion and conflict resolution genius Eugene Skeef, and new free jazz/radical poetry group StaggerLee Wonders. He has recently appeared on new albums by legends Julien Lourau and Courtney Pine - both of whom he tours with this year. Robert Mitchell is proud to be a Steinway Artist.
Emilia MartenssonEmilia is a London based Swedish vocalist who has built a reputation as one of the most exciting young vocalists on the UK jazz scene. She was named ‘Jazz Vocalist of the Year’ at the 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and released a critically-acclaimed album with ELDA Trio. Her contributions to Kairos Quartet helped them bring home a 2011 MOBO Award, while her distinctive voice led The Observer to deem her “The new face of British jazz 2012”. Emilia has toured extensively in Europe.
In 2017 she is thrilled to be performing with her new trio featuring Luca Boscagin (guitar) and Fulvio Sigurta (trumpet). Both musicians hail from Italy but have carved a place for themselves on the London jazz scene. The trio is a natural evolution from Emilia’s last eponymous album ‘Ana’ and continues to blur the lines between jazz/folk and alt-pop through original compositions, refreshing takes on standards and new renderings of pop classics from artists such as Paul Simon.
