In 2011 Butte made the transition to the Montana Folk Festival after hosting the National Folk Festival for three years.

Organizers from throughout Montana collaborated to establish a new and exciting event that built upon the success of the National while drawing from the strengths of the state in which it has been hosted.

The Montana Folk Festival has been established as a new and exciting event at the same time it remains very familiar to anyone who has attended the event in previous years.

As those who attended in 2011 discovered to their delight, the Montana Folk Festival continues to feature multiple stages with continuous live performances by some of the best traditional performers in the nation, including Montana’s finest, some of the region’s best traditional artists, ethnic and festival foods, a lively Family Area, and Folklife demonstrations and work-shops that focus on a new theme each year that highlights Montana’s heritage. In 2012, that theme is focused on transportation — “Traveling Through and beyond the Western Crossroads: Transportation in Montana and the Mountain West” and will emphasize railroads.

All of this is presented in the spectacular setting of Butte, Montana surrounded by historic headframes, historic tall buildings and the majestic Northern Rockies in every direction.

We invite other organizations, individuals and corporations to support the event as it moves closer to its second presenta-tion in 2012 as a tourism engine and cultural magnet that will continue to feature top national cultural acts, as well as show-case Montana’s rich heritage.

Corey Ledet was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but spent his summers in small-town Parks, Louisiana. The Creole culture has its roots in Louisiana, but spread across the country, including neighboring Texas. Because of this, he was able to be immersed at all times in the Creole culture he loved so much.

Claire Lynch is an acoustic pioneer who continually pushes the boundaries of the bluegrass genre. The Claire Lynch Band is a quartet that has the innate ability to perfectly interpret the beauty, subtlety, and genre-defying sophistication of Claire’s music.

Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown has grown to be recognized as the hardest-swinging Western swing trio on the planet. They have opened stadiums for such artists as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and continue to bring their brand of western swing to a wide range of festival audiences all over the world.

Diunna combines intricate patches of jazz, gospel and heartfelt sound to create a kind of blues that takes one on an emotional roller coaster ride.

The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers are one of America’s most authentic Old-Time String Bands, whose roots run deep in the rich music traditions of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Focusing on the spiritual and martial arts aspects of the art, the Dojo teaches not only the skillful playing of percussion instruments, but also the discipline of mind and body in the spirit of complete respect and unity among the drummers.

Evel Knievel’s hometown of Butte plays host to the world’s greatest celebration for the Worlds Greatest Daredevil in the finest fashion.

Started in 2002, the three-day event draws thousands of visitors from all over the world to the Mining City. Evel Knievel Days is held annually the fourth weekend of July. The 2012 festival will be July 26, 27, 28. It’s all free in Uptown Butte.

Daredevils Spanky Spangler, Ryan Capes, Trigger Gumm and the Kaptain himself, Robbie Knievel have all performed head-line stunts for EK Days, not to mention dozens of dazzling feats attempted by some of the country’s greatest stuntmen and daredevils.

Evel took the stage at the annual hoopla to welcome his fans, promote the event of which he is very proud and to thank all of the daring stuntmen who show up to perform in honor of the festivals namesake.

All Evel Knievel Days events will be in Historic Uptown Butte and free unless otherwise noted.

This year’s performers include Butte’s own Keith Sayers, who is the king of dirt bike riders and stunt performers.There will also be some surprise performers and events. And, as always, there’s plenty of food and memorabilia booths, live music each night and a great space to roam around to check out the historic uptown.

THE WORLD FAMOUS WALLENDAS The most famous family in circus history, the Wallendas, introduces an all-new troupe of performers in a death-defying pyramid with the youngest girl in history to present the fabled chair balance. Rick Wallenda, eldest grandson of founders, Karl and Helen, proudly presents his troupe of daredevils. Wallenda celebrates more than forty years on the highwire.The troupe offers many traditional turns in this stellar routine, culminating with the chair pyramid on bicycles. CANNON LADY - JENNIFER SCHNEIDERShe flies through the air with the greatest of ease, the daring young woman, who doubles as a human cannonball! Traveling 40 feet in the air out of a 28 foot cannon fired by her husband Rob, Jennifer says she loves being able to thrill people. The human cannon act began as early as the 1800’s as a feature in circus acts everywhere. Jennifer’s father, David Smith, built his first cannon more than 20 years ago and his entire family has taken part in thrill acts like this one. Jennifer began performing her high-flying act at the young age of 15. 19 years later Schnieder has flown in front of thousands of people in more than ten countries.

Keith Sayers is a native Montanan born and raised in Butte, the hometown of Evel Knievel!! Keith has been riding motorcycles for most of his life. He bought his first motorcycle at the age of 9 from his neighbor for $10.00 and from there it has been one epic ride for this hard working Rocky Mountain Kid.In 1995, at the age of 12, Keith started racing motocross which led him to three Montana state motocross championships. From there, Keith put in the time to advance himself in rac-ing but found that Montana was a difficult area to become noticed. Finding new inspiration in 1997, Keith started performing freestyle mo-tocross demos during race intermissions. He caught on quickly, and in 2002 at the Unleash the Freaks tour, Keith was introduced to Steve Miller from SCS Racing. The following year he did his first ever freestyle motocross show in his home town and it seemed as if Keith had what it takes to make it in FMX. Then in 2004, Steve offered him an opportunity to come over to Bozeman, MT to start practicing at his facility. From then on, Keith has taken what he learned from Steve and decided to build his own custom facility in Butte for practice. Keith’s dedication to bring a practice facility to his back door has proved invaluable. Keith is committed to riding and training on his motorcycles every chance he gets. The progression that Keith has gone through these past few years is an inspiring story for a small town rural FMXer. Keith began doing a wide variety of contests, demos and shows. His name has been listed among some of the best and he has the great respect of his FMX brethren. Keith not only approaches FMX seriously but he approaches the business side the same way by producing his own demos and constantly maintaining his top-notch practice facility. Irish festival hosts traditional music, dance, workshops about the Old Country

The 2012 An Ri Ra marks its 10th anniversary in historic Uptown Butte this year.Dates of the event are Aug. 10,11 and 12. This is the biggest line-up of performers that the organization has had.

The lineup of entertainers includes:• Solas – they have been working on for over a year and will film the An Ri Ra for the “Shamrock City” project – an album and DVD all about Butte Montana• The Makem & Spain Brothers – a favorite at An Ri Ra who also recorded a DVD at the Mother Lode Theatre “ Home Away From Home” – their tribute to Butte.• The Elders – have recently written a song about the Granite Mountain Disaster titled “The Miner” that they will perform at the festival.• Trinity Irish Dancers – the award winning Trinity Irish Dancers from Chicago – will perform and provide dance workshops at the festival.• Kathleen Keane & Friends – Kathleen Keane is a Butte favorite who wrote the “Montana Air”, a tribute to Butte. She will peform with Jimmy Moore & Larry Gray.• Tara O’Grady – the sensational jazz singer, Tara O’Grady, from New York will perform with her trio at the festival.• Cathie Ryan – Cathie will instruct workshops at this year’s festival and make some appearances on stage with other performers. (She will not be here in Butte with her band).• Brendan O’Shea – he will perform with Trinity as well as a solo set at the festival.• Local performers from Montana include Dublin Gulch, Dillon Junior Fiddlers, Strings of Fire, The Shamrockers, and a few others.
