Benefi ciaries

It’s hard to believe that Family Block Party is celebrating its ninth year. Atlanta Parent created this fun festival to give back to the communities and families we serve.

Every year, we invite organizations focused on helping families to become benefi ciaries of our Family Block Party. This year, we selected three outstanding organizations: Athletes on the Rise, Atlanta Diaper Relief and Camp Sunshine. All three provide valuable services to children and their families.

If your organization would like to be a partner for Family Block Party in 2013, please email Kaitlyn at [email protected]. Applications will be available Nov. 1, for consideration for 2013.

Athletes On The Rise is combating childhood obesity among girls, ages 8-18, by providing them with personal mentors, coaches and tutors that encourage them to participate in a daily physical activity, and to maintain a healthy diet. The nonprofi t organization’s year-long programming includes Saturday day camps, after-school programs, and summer camps.

Athletes on the Rise pays particular attention to young inner-city girls, who are most vulnerable. It gives the girls opportunities to have fun, and to learn basic movement and sport skills, increasing their coordination, endurance, and strength. The

organization helps girls consider career opportunities connected to sports, and learn about successful athletes and the history of women in sports. The girls learn to be both cooperative and competitive, and to discipline their bodies and their minds. Older girls act as “Peer Coaches,” which helps them develop leadership skills and gain work experience.

Among the organizations programs:Camp Rise I, a motor skill

development program for the younger girls, gets girls running, jumping, leaping, twisting, bending, and balancing as they use sports and movement-related equipment, including jump ropes, balls, scooters, bats, bowling pins, nets, hoops and scoops.

Camp Rise II, a sports and motor skill development program for the older girls, picks up where the fi rst program leaves off, enhancing girls’ motor skills while introducing girls to organized sports.

Camp Etiquette, a special project, promotes proper decorum and etiquette for the girls.

Atlanta Diaper Relief is dedicated to distributing diapers to families in need. As a diaper bank and a nonprofit organization, it collects diapers through diaper drives and distributes them to families in Cobb, Douglas and Fulton counties, partnering with childcare centers, women’s shelters and food pantries.

In poor or low-income families, a baby can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health risks and abuse. Also, one in 20 American moms have cleaned out or reused a diaper because they could not afford to buy new ones.

Low-income parents cannot take advantage of free or subsidized childcare if they cannot afford to leave disposable diapers at childcare centers. If parents cannot access daycare, then they are less able to work or attend school on a consistent basis. This, in turn, leads to increased economic instability and a continuation of the cycle of poverty.

Atlanta Diaper Relief ensures that these families have an adequate supply of diapers for their infants and toddlers. The organization also raises community awareness that “basic human needs” include diapers and that these basic needs are not being met for children living in poverty.

For more information: 770-310-0046; atlantadiaperrelief.org.

Camp Sunshine enriches the lives of Georgia’s children with cancer and their families through recreational, educational and support programs.

The nonprofit organization started as a one-week summer camp in 1983. It now operates year-round, providing more than 140 programs for hundreds of families across the state.

Summer camp is still the largest and most popular program, giving more than 400 children, ages 7 to 18, the chance to

participate in many of the same activities as those at a traditional summer camp – archery, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, pottery and more. At Camp Sunshine, a camper can receive chemotherapy in the morning and be playing tennis by the afternoon.

Camp Sunshine is committed to providing opportunities for normal development for all children with cancer throughout their journey. Programs at Camp Sunshine support the child, of course, but also encompass all family members – brothers, sisters and parents, too, because a diagnosis of cancer affects the entire family. Camp Sunshine brings these families together to share and draw strength from one another.
