3Surviving against all odds>> ‘The criminals drove up alongside our vehicle and shot 15 shots with an AK47 through my driver’s door’

MOST people are discouragedby life-changing challenges, butforMarkSparghisordeal

pushedhim to chasehis dreamof be-coming a successful businessman.

Spark used to run Cash& Carry ina town called Kentaniin what used to be theTranskei, but nowwhich is part of theEastern Cape. He wasthe manager and hiswife owned half thebusiness.

They lived inKomga about 90kmsaway from Kentaniand travelled to workand back every day around trip of about180kms.

He lovedhisworkandhis custom-ers andhewas a fourth generation ofthe old Transkei shopkeepers, but onthe 12 June, 2000 his life took a dra-matic turn when criminals shot him.

“Thecriminalsdroveupalongsideour vehicle and shot 15 shotswith anAK47 through my driver’s door. Mywhole life changed in an instant and

I was hit seven times.“My right leg was almost right off

and both my ankles were shot out. Iwas also shot in my thighs and mystomach. I could not stop the vehicleas neither of my legs could work. Wehit a ditch on the side of the road, thevehicle flipped it came to stop upsidedown.

“How I survived, can only be putdown to an act of God,” said Spargsnarrating his ordeal.

He said he left the shopkeepingbusinessand triedotherventuresbutwith little success.

Against all odds Sparg has neverlooked back about what happened, instead he opened a Fish & Chip Co

franchise in Harding.“I spent many years asking the

question of why this crime had hap-pened tome. However, Iwant to passa message to people who experienceviolentcrime.Otherthanlife itselfournext most important gift from God isfreedom of choice. For God to give usthis blessing he has to allow us to live

in an environment offreedomof choice andhappening.”

Hesaidthefact thatcriminals shot him isnot related in anywayto what could be per-ceived as a shortcom-ing from God.

“To my fellow vic-tims of serious and vi-olent crime, theymustknow thatGodhasnotabandoned them. They must take each

KZN health headinvestigated

ALLEGATIONS of misman-agement and corruption lev-elled against the embattledhead of the KwaZulu-Natalhealth department DrSibongile Zungu are being in-vestigated, a provincialgovernment spokespersonconfirmed.

Ngwenya said: “The in-quiry should not deteriorateinto trial of Dr Zungu via themedia. For nowweask every-body to allow the process toproceed ina fairand justman-ner.”

He said the outcome of theinquiry, headed by ProfessorFikile Ndaki and assisted byMimie Memka, would bemade public.

Zunguwasappointedheadof the department in August2009 and her contract endedlast August. A replacementhas yet to be found and Zun-gu’s contract has been re-newed on a monthly basis.

Zungu incurred the wrathof Nehawu when it emergedthat she had wracked up aR310 662 cellphone bill whileshe was overseas last April.

The union’s provincialchair Thobile Nkosiwas quot-ed in a newspaper last year assaying that Zungu was “inter-fering” with procurementprocesses and claimed thede-partment’s chief financial of-ficer, Mashaka Ravhura, wassuspended because he re-fusedtoapproveunlawfuland

corrupt activities, includingthe suspension of the supplychainmanager,AndileZondo.

Ravhura and Zondo weresuspended late last year afterallegations of corruption sur-faced.

To date, neither has re-turned to work and the out-comeof investigations into theallegations against them hasnever been revealed.

When does a carbecome a classic?>> 1969 VW Beetle is considered a classic

IT’S a definition dilemma and a burningquestion among car enthusiasts —when does a car become a classic?

Agreeing on an impalpable point in timethat constitutes a “Classic Car” definitionis rather challenging.

While one can consider a veteran car tobe one built before World War 1, a vintagecar to be one built before 1930 and postvintage a classification used for cars builtbetween 1930 and the end of World War2, there is definitely a grey area on whatcars built after this point are considered tobe.

Some may consider a car made in thefifties as a classic. Although there is no precise definition, the Classic Car Club ofAmerica considers a car to be classic if aged

between 30 and 49 years, and modernclassics are defined as cars aged between15 and 25.

Aside from age, there also has to besome aesthetic appeal for a car to be considered a classic and appreciated as such.Whether this be the design, colour or timeless engineering, a classic beauty needs tohave a somewhat subtle envy factor.

So would a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle beconsidered a classic? Absolutely.

The Volkswagen Type 1, affectionatelythe Volkswagen Bug or Beetle, is renownedfor being one of the first rearengined carsever launched. With more than 21 millionmanufactured since its inception in 1938,the Beetle is the longestrunning andmostmanufactured car of a single design

platform worldwide and, as the years havepassed, various models have come andgone.

Despite this, the Beetle has most certainly stood the test of time given that the“new Beetle” was launched in 1998.

Placed fourth in an international pollfor the world’s most influential car of the20th century undertaken in 1999, the VWBeetle will go down in history as one of themost classic cars.

Despite being around for over 70 years,it never loses its appeal. As an ideal firstcollector car, the Beetle is a firm favouriteamong classic car enthusiasts.

How does one get their hands on aclassic VW Beetle? Well, there are varioussellers worldwide that you could purchaseone from and subsequently embark on arewarding restoration project.

Vehiclefirstaid kitessentials

DRIVERS should always do theirbest to be prepared to respond toany emergency. Even though youmay not be trained medical profes-sionals there are often small bits ofassistance one can provide withfirst-aidandaneffectiveand fast re-sponse to smaller emergencies.

Arrive Alive advises drivers totravel with a first-aid kit in vehiclesor have one at home.

Many of us could do with someadvice on what’s needed in such anemergency medical kit so ArriveAlive approached road-safety part-ner ER24 with questions aboutemergency preparedness — andthat emergency kit.

Afirst-aidkitshouldnotbeahas-sle to take with you on holiday orkeep in your vehicle.

A good size is usually somethingthat can fit comfortably into yourcubby hole or one size larger thatyou keep in the boot of your vehicle.

What would be the most impor-tant pieces of equipment and sup-plies in such an emergencymedicalkit?

Itemsto treatburnwounds, cuts, bruises, splinta fracture, bandaids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for in-sectbitesandstingsaswell asdisin-fectant. If you prefer to keep medi-cine inyour first-aidkit—headachetablets, anti-nausea and vomiting.

It is importantthatonlyarespon-sible adult make use of these medi-cations and that no prescriptionmedications are kept in the first-aidkit.

Also do not administer yourprescription medication to some-one else, even if you use the samemedication.

What would be the most impor-tant essentials to carry inamini-kit.

Bandages, band aids and anti-septicsolution.Sunblockwouldalso

be a good item to keep in your first-aid kit as well as after-sun lotion. The content of your first-aid kitlargelydependonwhereyouwill betravelling to andwhat ismost likelyto happen. If you are a regular out-doorsman you would know whathappened before and what youneeded.

What are themost commonmis-takes amateurs tend to make whentrying to perform first aid?

Be smart and keep the rightthings in your first-aidkit. Themostimportant things are a CPR mouth-piece should you need to performCPR,somethingtostopbleedingandsplint fractures.

This includes band aids, ban-dages, dressings, strapping, gauzeetc.

Probably the most important ofall is medical gloves. Protect your-self before you try and help others. This should be in every first-aid kit, regardless if you intend to use it onyour family or not.

Are there specific measures theamateur responder in an emergen-cy should rather avoid and leave tothe trained professionals?
