Welcome to the first Forest Hills High School Key Club Newsletter! This newsletter includes various events, fundraisers, future ideas, requirements, Key Club international etc. from 2012-2013. This newsletter will inform you all about what the Forest Hills High School Key club is and does.
Key Club is a non-profit organization that helps communities around the world by doing community service projects and by raising money for those in need. Key club is a great way to get people to volunteer at fun events that they will enjoy going to.
I would like to dedicate this newsletter to the past Key Club officers for encouraging me to become an editor of the club, the Divisional 8A lieutenant governor-Carla Pacheco for guiding me through my Key Club experience, the adviser for giving me advice, the current officers for helping me in everything related to Key Club, all the Key Club members for making my role meaningful, and my family for influencing me to become the person I am today.

Club News!
The new officers for this year are President Sonam Sherpa, Vice President Sanket Aggrawal, Secretary Stephen Mnere, Treasurer Shreeya Tuladhar, and Editor/Web master Cindy Win. Check out our greetings in this newsletter! We are very happy to be officers of our key club in our school! We are trying our best to make improvements in our club! For the month of April, we fundraised for March of Dimes! We collected over $300 for this organization! We also did the March of Dimes Walk with our division. IT’S APRIL FOOLS THIS MONTH!

In April, our division did the March of Dimes walk! March of Dimes is a non-profit organization that helps premature babies. “ We help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies…For moms and babies everywhere In local communities across the country, we're helping moms take charge of their health, and supporting families when something goes wrong. The March of Dimes also acts globally: sharing best practices in perinatal health and helping improve birth outcomes where the needs are the most urgent.”

Originally, Key Club adopted as its motto, "We Build," the same motto as its parent organization, Kiwanis International. In 1976, the program changed its motto to, "Caring—Our Way of Life," to more clearly convey members’ reasons for helping others. Dues paid by every member fund Key Club, and its officers are high school leaders elected by the members at district and International conventions.

Key Club International, a service leadership program of Kiwanis International, is the oldest and largest service organization for high school students, and gives its members opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership skills. Started in California in the 1925, Key Club today thrives on more than 5,000 high school campuses with a total membership of 245,000 in 30 countries, including North America, the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently, Asia and Australia.
Key Club attributes its success to the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. In other words, as members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities.

TRICK-OR-TREAT: KEY CLUBBERS RAISE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR THE ELIMINATE PROJECT April 12, 2012 You’re awesome! Key Clubbers and other SLP members around the world have raised more than US$577,901 for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in 2011. Congratulations! Your support of The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus has saved or protected more than 321,056 mothers and their future babies. Start planning an end-of-school-year fundraiser, and help Key Clubbers raise US$1 million by the 2012 Key Club International Convention. 64th Leadership Training Conference
Leadership Training Conference (LTC) or DCON (District Convention) is a time where all the Key Clubs in the District specifically New York for us, meet up and acknowledge the work we've done the past year and marks the "end" and the start of the new Key Club year.
There are contests such as the scrapbook contest and video contest. The Main thing happening at LTC we elect our District Board (District Governor, Secretary, and Treasurer). We also retire the old district board and bring up the new board. You'll get to meet other Key Clubs and bond with people like from Rochester or Long Island. You'll also get trained as an officer, learn about the district/international projects, service ideas, and even skills like public speaking.
There are also fundraisers such as Penny Wars, the Eliminate Walk, and a board auction. More details on the fundraisers later on. There's even a dance on the Friday and Saturday nights. We stay there for 3 days and all meals are in the registration fee.

Our advisor for the year of 2012-2013 will be Mrs. Korsky! She is a guidance counselor at Forest Hills High School and she is known to be one of the best guidance counselors. She helps our key club with ideas about events and she helps many students from our school. She is very friendly and will do a lot of work for our key club to make it the best it can be. She was the treasurer of her Key Club when she was in high school.

Dear Key Club members, As you guys know, my name is Mrs. Korsky and I am your Key Club Advisor! I am very happy to be part of Key Club this year. We have done many new and successful events that I hope to continue for years to come. As an officer of my high school’s Key Club, I have always aspired to become an advisor. In fact, when I was a senior in high school I told my family that I wanted to become a guidance counselor and advise my school’s Key Club and that’s exactly what I did! I am very happy to say that I had an excellent first year as Key Club Advisor. I am proud to work with such a wonderful group of students who have the same aspirations as I do, which is to help others. I hope we continue to grow as a club and learn from each other as we continue to serve our school and the community.

With new service year in progress, I welcome you to Key Club. Hopefully you will love Key Club as other members and I do. My name is Sonam Sherpa, and I am your President for Service year 2012-2013. It has been an honor thus far to be a part and to serve the club. Key Club has remained to maintain its position as one of the most accomplished student-led organization in Forest Hills High School, and I will do my best to make this club the finest it can be. When most of you joined, you probably thought Key Club is committed only to community services. However, our club is a fun-and-family-oriented club; you have fun, and interact with many new people both inside the club and outside the club while doing the service. If you're willing to have fun and be committed to the club, you won't regret joining this club!

Hello, Hey, Hola, Bonjour, Ni Hao, and Namastay! My name is Sanket Aggarwal and I am vice president of Forest Hills Key Club. I am not an average seventeen year old. I plan to go to a great college and follow my dreams of becoming a heart surgeon. But there is a long road ahead of me before I fulfill my dreams!
I joined Key Club as a junior and I have done more than I expected. Being one of the first clubs I joined, Key Club helped me both gain and spread awareness for numerous causes. I have participated in walks, completed service projects, attended meetings and most importantly grown as an individual. Before joining key club, my life revolved around my needs, my concerns, and basically myself. But I have realized that there is more to life than solely “Sanket”. After attending the AIDS walk, I realized how many people took time out of their busy schedules to come and show their support for those suffering from this fatal disease. Walking approximately 6 miles on a weekend shows that one sincerely wants to contribute in finding a cure for this virus. By seeing all of those people on that day, they gained more confidence and determination to fight this disease. The AIDS walk is just one of the countless events that have changed me. Not only have I changed my attitude towards my community, but also I have attained great leadership skills by joining key club. Giving Power Point presentations every Wednesday about new events and utilizing various mechanisms to encourage members to participate have boosted my confidence and ameliorated my social skills.
In the 2012-2013 year, I aspire to give back to key club and my community. I would like to educate those who are like the “old Sanket”. I want others to also realize that there is a whole new world which is full of people, especially the disabled or needy, who could really use help. I plan to do this by recruiting more members and participating in soup kitchens, retirement homes, and much more. Moreover, I want to help students come out of their “shells” by introducing leadership opportunities - have students engage in public speaking and possibly become future presidents and give back to their community. I am sure that with a positive attitude and strong work ethic we as a team can make these goals into accomplishments!

Hello everyone!
My name is Stephen Mnere and I am the Secretary of the Forest Hills High School Key
Club.
I am currently 16 years old and will be going into my senior year at Forest Hills High School.
As of the 2012-2013 school year, I will be involved with Key Club for the second year in a row.
In addition to my Key Club membership, I plan on going into Circle K after graduating high
school. With no further introduction, I would like to welcome you all to the Key Club
Newsletter.
What's up Forest Hills High School Key Clubbers? First of all, I would like to take time out of this article to welcome all of you members to our Key Club family! Not only are you a part of our school's club, but also you are a member of a huge organization. Well, I'm Shreeya Tuladhar, your treasurer for the term, and with your help, we will do countless fundraisers and help organizations that need support. By doing all of the service projects, you will be changing someone's life- someone who was in need of your help. You will also begin to see a positive change in yourself; just like I did when I first joined Key Club.
As you already know, I'm Shreeya Tuladhar, your treasurer for the 2012-2013 term, and I'd love to get to know your name as well so as work together for the term. I'm a sixteen year old that never gets tired of talking. You'll probably notice my talkativeness in our meetings. Aside from talking, I absolutely enjoy giving back to our wonderful community and helping others in need. The satisfaction received from doing charitable work such as those done in key club, I cannot compare to any other happiness in the world, and I hope that each one of you will feel the same way as I do while we work together for various causes. I also love trying different and new things, especially food! I'm a huge fan of eating, and I love to cook, even though I'm a huge fail at it. Some things that I cannot imagine my life without, besides oxygen, water, and food, are my family, close friends, technology, and shopping!
To sum this article up, I am an average teenage girl who aspires to live life way above average, just like we all do. Key Club isn't just a part of my life, it's a priority and I hope by the end of this year, it is one of your priorities as well. My goal for this year is to make key club not only a service organization, but also a social period that you look forward to attending. I promise to try my best to hold fundraisers that you guys suggest, keep track of our money and make sure that our money is given to organizations on time. I hope you will try, just as much as I do, by participating in the events and collecting more money than we ever have. I know, together, we can make 2012-2013 Key Club service year better than ever and it is only possible if you are willing to work with me, so please give me a chance and get to know me. I'll make sure you don't regret it. I look forward to knowing each of you guys on a first name basis and having a blast together while making this club better than ever. Last but not the least, let's make experiences this year that we will remember and cherish forever, we can do this!
Meet the Editor/Web Designer!
Hey Key Club members! My name is Cindy Win. But you can call me Cindy Windy or Winnie! I am currently a junior at Forest Hills High School and I am the Key club editor/web designer. I joined Key Club my sophomore year and like most people, I thought Key Club was a club for making keys. But when I actually joined it, it was much more than that. Before I joined key club, I was active in other clubs and teams, but those clubs didn’t have a life changing impact on me like Key Club did. Due to my shyness, I wasn’t given as big of a role as I do in Key Club. As soon as I joined Key Club, I felt welcomed and many key club members spoke to me. I had an immense amount of fun in the events. There’s little effort from how much I gained from the events. I think everyone should join Key Club events, even if they do for an hour, because the events are life changing. I will always remember the AIDS walk because there were people, who went to the AIDS walk, even when they were disabled and had to limp the whole time. My past officers encouraged me to run for a position and I did.
When it was time for elections, I was wondering about how it would be like to be a leader of Key Club. I had a huge passion for the club and I wanted to do even more than I had done beforehand. Furthermore, just the thought of running for a position in Key Club made me smile. I was really ambivalent whether I should run for a leadership position or not. I wasn’t sure if I could run for a position because I was only a sophomore at that time and no one I knew was a leader at an early age so I was easily discouraged. I spoke to the President of Key Club and she encouraged me to run because she thought I was a responsible person and a dedicated member. In addition, the treasurer of the club told me to give it a chance because she knew how much I loved Key Club and she told me it would help boost my confidence. She told me not to worry about what others told me because she knew I would be a wonderful leader. After hearing all the reassuring comments from the previous leaders of Key Club, I felt confident that I could be a leader. The position that I really wanted to fill was Key Club editor and web designer because I love editing and improving people’s grammar. I was also interested in web designing because it was interesting to make a website that would appeal to people’s eyes. I had the experience of editing because I was an editor of the school’s medical club and I took classes for computer science that would help for web designing. After running for editor and web designer of Key Club, I heard the best news of my high school career thus far-I was elected as the editor and web designer.
When I was a leader, I had much more to do and it wasn’t a tedious task to do; it was actually fun to do design the website and to send emails and edit papers. I improved my public speaking skills and I made more friends. After a great half of the year of being a leader of Key Club, I decided I wanted to do even more than what I usually did. I didn’t want to follow after someone else’s orders and I wanted more responsibility. I decided I wanted to be the scrapbook committee head because I wanted to have a committee of my own and lead others to improve their writing and grammar as well. I hope to continue to be a leader and possibly one day the district editor of Key Club. I hope to socialize more and be a more responsible person. Key Club definitely made me happier.
I loved being involved in my club but I wanted to do more to help not only my school club but also Division 8A key club. I am currently the Scrapbook committee head and the Divisional Secretary. My role as the Scrapbook committee head is to guide all of the editors in Division 8A on how to make a scrapbook. I think scrapbooks are really important because they capture memories from key club and people can look back at these scrapbooks and remember how much fun they had! In addition, I’m Divisional Secretary and my role is to advertise key club and show off our pride! I have to record everything that is said during the meetings and events. In addition, I have to help Carla, our wonderful lieutenant governor, whenever she needs help. My goals are to have more key club members to come to meetings and events and to prove that Division 8A is the most dedicated division out there! Knowing how key club works, I hope to make many positive changes and create more exciting events! I hope to make everyone feel welcomed in Key Club and I hope no one will be left out. I hope to meet everyone in Key Club and I hope Forest Hills High School Key Club will be known as the pinnacle of all Key Clubs!

St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk

This was our first Key Club event in 2011. On Saturday, November 19th,
2011 starting at 9:00 am, many dedicated key clubbers went to Foley Square,
Manhattan to walk for the cause of the diseases that many patients of St. Jude’s
Hospital have. The walk was 3.1 miles but it was completely worth it because in
the end, many key clubbers felt proud that they are making a huge impact on
people’s lives. The walk was about 2 hours long, but many members enjoyed it
because they got to know each
other, make new friends, and
help others by giving their
support. A lot of their money
and support come from public
contributions and we were
proud to be part of it.

Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF

On November 23rd, 2011, we started the Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF fundraiser. UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) is a fundraising program that provides assistance to children and mothers in many countries. Our club wanted to do UNICEF because we knew it was a trust worthy program that would save children’s lives and mothers’ lives. In this fundraiser, we collected money in UNICEF Boxes and kindly asked people to donate money for mothers and children. It was a long and difficult task to raise over $200 in total, but our club managed to do it. We showed our passion for helping others and we explained how cents would be appreciated because only a few dollars could save a life. In addition, some key clubbers generously donated their own money for UNICEF because they wanted to help people in many countries.
Food Drive

On November 23, 2011 to December 2011, we held our Food Drive! Food Drive is "a campaign to collect foodstuffs for charity distribution." This year, we mostly collected canned foods (because they remain unspoiled for many months, unless the can is opened). We also accepted other kinds of food as well. It's surprising how much food we collected by the end of the Food Drive! I thank all the members who participated! We'd like to especially thank Chelsea Neela for donating the highest amount of canned food! We will be holding this event again this year! We hope to raise more food than previous year. Please join us in supporting this cause! We'll hand out the list of foods you can bring when this event begins!
Food Drive is the most effective way to help our community because there are many people out there who don't have same life style as us. Poverty hangs over their head, and hunger haunts them every day... Life is not easy for everyone as we think - many people die each year due to hunger issues. Key Club stands up and fights for the cause: "To end world hunger!" Since we cannot travel worldwide or statewide, we donate all the food we collected to our Local Salvation Army, which distributes those foods to poor and hungry people throughout the nation and world!
To be organized, we had everyone sign in on the sign-in sheet (leave their name and their OSIS #) when they donated food, so we could keep track how many food each person is donating and give them credit/hours accordingly!
Jingle Bell Arthritis Walk BY Cindy Win
On December 4, 2011, our key club attended the Jingle Bell Arthritis Walk. We met up at school so we could go to the place the walk took place in so no one would get lost and we would walk together as a club. We registered at 8:30-10 a.m. The walk was 1 mile long and it took about an hour to complete the walk.
We wanted to do this walk because it raised awareness for the Arthritis Foundation that helps people who have Arthritis. This walk was a great way for members to get the gist about what key club really was. Some people dressed up in holiday spirit by wearing themed costumes and jingle bells to their shoelaces. Attending this walk was a great way to spend the holiday and we all felt like we spent our time with family. There were thousands of walkers and runners who walked on pavements, pathways, and parks in the freezing weather but it didn’t matter to them because they knew it was for a good cause. We gave people with Arthritis hope and strength, which are important to fight Arthritis.
Arthritis is the nation’s most common cause of disability. Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. A joint is the area where two bones meet. So when people with Arthritis walked, they would always feel pain and stiffness. Our club definitely thought this was a serious disability and we couldn’t ignore people with Arthritis.
We connected and unified as a club during this event. We held signs to support those with Arthritis and we spread the word that people should help those with Arthritis. The officers appreciated all the hard work the Key Club members did so they created certificates as awards to those who came to the walk.
Winter Concert Beverage Sale

Did you know that Key Club does events that the members desire? If not, then now you know. For example, we held our annual Beverage Sale in December. If we go back, this event didn’t use to be an annual event, but rather was inconsistent pattern event. But last year, majority of the members suggested we do Beverage Sale again, thus it was made an annual event for our club! In order for it continue being an annual event, we will be doing one this year too! And I really want to see all of you there helping us!
Each year, we have different theme for our Beverage Sale (i.e. we support different cause each year) and the time/location/number of beverage sale aren't always the same. For 2010-2011 Beverage Sale, all the money raised through the fundraiser was sent to Japan's Relief, to support the Japanese people cope from the disaster of Tsunami. For 2011-2012, all the profits went to National Food Bank to fight against hunger in the United States and around the world! We will also be holding one this year, so you should be excited! Most likely this year's theme will be "Alex's Lemonade Stand" to fight against Childhood Cancer.
In 2011-2012, we held our beverage sale during the Winter Concert in front of the school auditorium! One of the benefits from participating in the Beverage Sale was that you could see the Winter Concert for FREE! We had a huge group, so we divided our group in two shifts. While one was watching the Winter Concert, the other group was doing the Beverage Sale… and vice versa. The event was really organized, and...
If you look through the pictures, you will see how fun the event was. We'd like to thank everyone who participated in the event and helped us make this event successful by bringing beverages and food, etc. We are proud to acclaim that we made more than $300!!! The event was THREE hours long.
Rose Sale

The Rose Sale is one of the most important events/fundraisers that our Key Club has every year because our club has always gotten the most amount of money from school kids. The Rose Sale took place at the Forest Hills High School cafeteria and it occurred in the beginning of February in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The officers contacted a florist shop to buy roses a week before the actual selling took place. They announced the event during our weekly Key Club meetings and they created forms for us to sign up to sell or deliver the flowers. By making forms, they proved they were organized.
We could either sell the roses or deliver them to classrooms. Both options were chaotic but worth it in the end because our club got to see happy faces when people got the roses or sent them. We set up a table in the middle of the cafeteria so everyone could conveniently come to buy roses and the place also attracted people that were on the lunch lines to buy roses. This was one of our strategies to raise more money for the cause. At the beginning of the period, many people would rush to the table and pay for the roses. It was a wonderful thing that many of the key clubbers participated in this event. Four to five people volunteered to collect the money and small cards from people who bought the roses. After a week had past, key clubbers volunteered to deliver the roses to the room number that the person, who bought the roses, specified on the small cards. The Rose Sale was a long process but we got through it with the cooperation from most of the Key Club members and with the thought that it would help those in need.
March Of Dimes BY SONAM SHERPA
Contact Information
March of Dimes was a walk to raise awareness and money to donate for the cure of
the millions of deaths of innocent premature babies. Although the event took place early in
the morning, the process of walking was for a great cause, so we didn’t mind having to wake
up early at all. In fact, we all found it to be very enjoyable and inspiring. Although not a lot of
members from the Forest Hills High School Key Club attended because of AP exams and
other stuff during that week of school, everyone who attended the event had a superb time.
We walked for one and a half hours and at the end of the walk, the volunteers gave us protein
shakes and snack bars to alleviate our hunger. In addition, the lovely weather refreshed us all,
and, we were very excited to do the walk. We didn’t find the walk be tiresome at all. I hope
that this event has motivated most of the Forest Hills High School Key Club to join more
events. This event, not only raised awareness and money for the cure of the deaths of
premature babies, but also allowed us to socialize and meet new people inside our own
division. We made new friends, had fun, and got our service hours all from one event, what
more could we want? So, yes, anyone who’s reading this article, come to the events! It’s always
fun!
Aside from the walk, we also did a fundraiser for this event. For the fundraiser, with
the members' efforts, we were able to collect over $300, which is an astounding
accomplishment for our club. This amount of money was greater than the Rose Sale, which
was usually the fundraiser that raised the most money. This showed our improvement in Key
Club. We handed out these cards where people would sign up their name, and donate at least
$1 for each card. We help make our community better through various means.
